Thanks very much for posting. I first encountered this, as a child along with many other great works, in the comic books named "Classics Illustrated", which introduced me to so much that I later read as books in adult hood
This is a great work of journalism and anthropology told with vivid detail and clever irony and with a tone of affection and dismay that puts the reader squarely in the vessel.
It took me two years to finish this, but well worth it it is. I say this as a retired commercial fisherman and merchant mariner, most time in Alaskan waters, but from Puget Sound to Attu Island, and to the Canadian border in the Arctic Ocean. A true classic and a significant history that is derving of ongoing memory as humanity moves forward or founders.
🎉🎉I didn’t want this tale to end🎉🎉. He’s got money in his pocket and entering 1836 Boston. He went on to be a great defender or the downtrodden and a leading abolitionist. He married Longfellow’s daughter Fascinating stuff. 🎉🎉. Enjoy this wonderful Time Machine
Thanks for that info; I'll learn more about him. Meanwhile, is it my pun head or was he winking at us when commenting on a cockfight with phrases like "Both cocks showed great pluck"?
I’d read this book many years ago - what a delight it is to listen to it here! Thank you! Dana’s telling of his adventure seems so fresh and immediate, that it feels like we are there on that voyage with him, even though it took place in a long ago historical era when Andrew Jackson was President of the USA and even before Victoria was queen of England. Historic parts of Boston would still be there and perhaps such a ship could be seen in a maritime museum like Mystic Seaport.
I'm glad you're enjoying it. Calling it fresh and immediate hits the nail on the head. It helps the Peter Joyce gives such a great reading performance.
Great yarn, very well read thank you. An illustration / painting of a brig would be an improvement. If you don't have one ask me, I can draw or paint a brig, been there done that as you can see on my (marine) website under 'Merchant Sail'. Brigs I know well having served time on what was at the time the world's oldest active square rigger having been built in 1858.
1:47:44 The flogging of two sailors. 1:50:16 "If you want to know what I flog you for I'll tell you. It's because I like to do it. It suits me! That's what I do it for." 1:50:40 "Don't call on Jesus Christ. He can't help you."
I DO HOPE THE LATTER OF THIS BOOK IS ABOUT THE ABUSE ONBOARD AS THE FIRST PART IS A SIMPLE TALE OF SHIP'S LIFE. NOTHING LIKE THE FILM STARRING ALAN LADD.

Even with “ carms “
What a wonderful experience, both for the crew, and for us readers/listeners... Remarkable days indeed...
I enjoyed this very much. Simply told by a talented author. The narration is excellent as well. Thank you so much.

Thank you. I love this book and he is an admirable man.
Cheers Peter
😊
Beautiful reading! Thank you❤
You're welcome. Glad you liked it.
A great story. The Hard Life on those ships is so far from my working-at-home life today…. Provides perspective on how good we’ve got it.
Brilliant 😊

Same here, in the summer when I was a boy, it was one of my favorites

*Thank you!!!*
Wonderful story, wonderfully presented! I enjoyed it immensely, and thanks to all involved for bringing this gem to us.
I'm glad you liked it. This is the sort of lost audiobook I am wanting to preserve and share.
Top notch reader! 👍 🚢
Dana experienced this as a 20 year old. I’d love to hear this book spoken by a very young man.
THANKS 😊
Thank you for the upload and sharing this great book!
Thanks for sharing this gem. Read this as a kid in the old "Classics Illustrated " long form comic books.
Those classics illustrated comics are very well done. It's surprising how much of the story they tell in only 48 pages.
Omg l had the whole Series thanks for bringing back that memory
I love the account of coming in by row boat onto the coast of California since I live here
👍 love books about sailing ships and expeditions especially mapping the arctic ocean
Amazing story!
Well read Sir....
Great 🎉story. Great narration. Lots of mispronunciations, but awesome nonetheless 🎉

Excellent. Thank you. Forget “Moby Dick”! Dana’s work contains the ocean’s brine, the force of a gale.

Once we get to Mexico, I'm going to jump ship and take my chances with the natives.

Surely a Brig has only 2 masts ;
The illustration shows a ship with 3 masts . .
You are correct. I just liked this painting so I used it. Happy sailing!

Great reading although I cringed at the Spanish pronunciation
Summation education.
