Yo, I did a video explaining the Death Skip in Brazilian Portuguese using the knowledge you show here. I put your video in the description and mentioned I learned from here and asked people - if someone ever comes across it - to check your channel + like this video. I hope it isn't a problem. I just did it to show to my older brother, since we used to play this a lot when we were kids, and he doesn't speak English (then I thought that some people may benefit from this as well). I used to fool around with this game for hours straight when I was a kid, can't wait to break it following this video (I had no internet back then, so I would just "Sword Brothers Spell" abuse into every room to trying to go out of bounds). I also have issues with Soul Steal on PSXE, I can do it just fine if there's one enemy on the screen, but if there's multiple it's really hard. Have you found out how to fix this?
Since making the video I have switched emus and am now using Bizhawk. I feel I can get it more consistently using that. I also make sure I do clean lifts in between button commands as not to add any extra directions that aren't necessary. So for instance, left to right to quarter circle to left to right. In between the lefts and rights, I completely lift my finger off the d-pad and move to the other. Seems to help. Sorry this is a bit wordy but I hope it helps ya out!
Why do people not use the screen frame cancel for death skip? You enter in and out for two screens on the first frame and he doesn’t appear and it doesn’t softlock if you fall
That is only for the PSP version and other rereleases of that version. That method will not work on the Playstation version.

yo aphotic! i've been struggling with the heart refresh glitch! i can get the screen transition correct, but it seems like i'll always fall thru the ceiling and into the clock room-- even as a bat, i get pushed out?! could it be i'm not turning into a bat fast enough, or maybe using heart refresh at the wrong pixel in the hallway?
maybe you can shine some light on this issue i'm having!
Yea you probably are taking too long to transform into the bat. Try to do it as soon as you see the screen turn black after leaving the screen! Let me know if this helps.
i figured it out! i was transforming between the hallway and the save room, when i should be transforming between the save room and the clock room! thanks for the quick response, aphotic! your video is helping so much. now, if only i can get consistent with the friggin wingsmash... CRY
I am trying to do this on retroarch with the PS1 emulator but its not working for me. I feel like I line up the white line perfectly but nothing seems to work. Is there a reason? Is there a specific version of this game I need to play on a specific emu?
Edit: wow I actually got it right after posting this
My suggestion would be to go to the SOTN speedrun.com leaderboard. I believe in the guide section, one of the sections at least, tells you how to setup your emulator. Sounds like your resolution isn't the proper one so even if you line up and it looks correct, if the resolution is not what its supposed to be, you will be on the wrong pixel even if it looks so. Try this out! GL!
when I go to buy with a librarian, there is no buffalo star or duplicator, do you know why this happens?? and how to solve??
You must clear the game first once to unlock duplicator and other items in the librarian's menu. On a 2nd time thru after clearing the game, you will see these items.
