Lindsey Buckingham is effectively playing two completely different guitar lines here plus singing. He's legitimately probably the most underrated guitarist ever. Phenomenal talent.
Rolling Stone has him in the top 100 of all time.
💯
A GOAT. Probably the most underrated ever
@@hughdalton7622 and they probably have Kurt Cobain ahead of him 🙄😅
@@hughdalton7622 That's kind of the point. Hes at 100th. Below Steve Jones, Lou Reid, Robbie Krieger, etc... Buckingham can play dozens of styles, has a truly distinctive original sound, can play multiple lines at once (something of which only a small handful of players are capable), was the primary writer and responsible for most of the musical arrangement for Fleetwood Mac, is responsible for dozens of hits without compromising musical integrity, etc... I could go on and on. There are people on that list above him who can barely even play basic chords. He should be up with Al DiMeola and Joe Bonamassa. Most. Underrated. Guitarist. Ever.
*Lindsey always plays without a pick and uses each finger. His guitar playing is really quite amazing, yet often goes unrecognized.*
What do you expect with that blond with the mysterious voice and boobs standing next to him.
And he is using plastic strings on this song.. ♠W.G.
Yeah it’s called finger style. This song is pretty fundamental but he plays everything so clean. I can only play about 90 seconds before my arms are shot. Crazy stamina.
@@wgdavis5353 Yeah nylon stings, very common on finger style songs.
Underrated musician
It is absolutely all Lindsey Buckingham… he is one of my Guitar Gods
By the way, I was never a fan of the official studio version of this song, even though I love Fleetwood Mac overall. This stripped down, “just-Lindsey and his guitar” version is what made me even like the song at all.
Lindsey Buckingham and Mark Knopfler, the kings of finger picking
Yes. Just Lindsey playing live with no-one else. And let's not forget that he is self taught guitarist with a VERY unique finger-picking style. Not sure anyone can copy what he is doing there.
I think it's because he played the banjo before he started playing guitar.
@@MusicMissionary He started on a Mickey Mouse guitar age 7, listening to his brothers Elvis records. His parents saw he had talent and upgraded his guitar at age 8. When he moved on to listening to folk he incorporated banjo riffs into his guitar playing but mostly a Travis picking style. He didn't pick up a banjo until he was 16. The guitar has always been first though he plays a variety of string instruments - as well as keyboards and percussion.
@@caps689 I was wondering about percussion. I never knew him as a drummer, but one of the skills of percussion is to have the left hand and right hand working completely independent of one another, which kind of works toward the type of talent shown here.
The song is pretty difficult to learn on it's own..but once you get it, it's almost impossible to play it the way he does, as his picking style is unique to himself alone, and he adds so much of himself to the song it's impossible to mimic, even by skilled guitarists. He's kinda like Blind Willie Johnson...you can hear the notes he's playing , but you will never be able to mimic the style.
As a guitar player myself, I’ll say this is known as being one of the more difficult finger style acoustic pieces to play. On its own it’s difficult to do - you’ve got 1 guitar balancing rhythm, lead licks, and also keeping the bass line. So really, it’s doing what would typically be done by 2 guitars and a bass. It’s a hard one to play because your mind has to be balancing all 3 parts together. It’s hard to play slow, let alone at this BPM. I’m still trying to learn it. But then singing WHILE doing all that? He’s on another level.
This sums it all up very well.
Yup, it's one guitar.
Pure talent to also sing in that style while your hands/fingers are going at light speed.
He's definitely the only person playing, an absolute legend!
It's called picking and he's the best ever to do it no pick just fingers and if you want to hear him picking at his best listen to Gold Dust Woman.
Lindsey Buckingham is one fantastic Guitarist. Very underrated!
This is a mind-blowing performance, no question.
Lindsey Buckingham ❤️ The most underrated guitar player ever.
Pure talent.
You should check out the official video/single version of "Big Love."
This is a live, acoustic version...very different from the released single.
You will appreciate both.
Lindsey Buckingham is one of the best.
Agree. This is great, but so is the regular version. Also, the man is a genius.
I agree the official video is so much better
It is very different, but it's the better version in a lot of opinions. Not that the original isn't great, but it is amazing to see him do this
They discuss in this reaction that they had already checked out the official video/single, at least part of it. So, they did have that for context.
YES...the house on the hill is Kimberly Crest Mansion here in Redlands, Ca.
Lindsey is an amazing guitarist, songwriter, vocalist, performer and I sorely miss seeing him with Fleetwood Mac 😔
I love Stevie Nicks, and I love Christine McVie, but Lindsey Buckingham is the genius behind Fleetwood Mac’s music. He produces and creates the sound behind their songs, and adds his incredible guitar and vocal work. And his own songs are just as good! Thank you Brad and Lex for letting Lindsey get some shine!!
Fleetwood Mac's massive success in the late 70s and 80s was due in no small part to Buckingham's leadership in the studio. His guitar virtuosity, songwriting, and production skills made his former bandmates very rich. It's a shame how after 40+ years of great music, greed broke "the chain."
Agreed!
Apart from Peter Green, Buckingham was the glueof the band for the duration of existence.
Perfectly said
One man. One guitar. I could give you a list of mind-blowing songs like this.
Please do.
I’ve seen him perform this song live and it leaves you breathless. Just incredible.
Lindsey is the most underrated rock guitarist ever!!!!! Whenever he is thrown out of Fleetwood mac, they always have to get two guitarists to recreate his sound live! He is simply amazing and Fleetwood mac are always at their best when he plays with them.
Look at his right thumb...it never stops moving! That's why it sounds like he is not the only one playing guitar (but he is the only one!)
Probably the best version you could have reacted to. Just amazing guitarist!
Lindsey had the musical drive that kept Fleetwood Mac together during their rocky times where everyone was falling apart and wanting to go their separate ways!
Super legendary! Lindsey went his own way with his own style and a awesome voice to complement his playing.
He's also playing a nylon string classical guitar, rather than a steel string acoustic normally used in popular music (nylon string classical guitars are usually used in orchestras and classical music only.) FM was a very gifted band - they had three members who had solo hits - Lindsey, Stevie, and Christine McVie. LB wrote this and the full band studio version was a big hit but the solo live version just kicks ass! Thanks for another great reaction :)
One of the greatest ever, singer / songwriter/ producer and virtuoso guitar player.
Legend.
It's only him playing! He is one of the most underrated guitar players in the rock genre.
Brad & Lex, you’ll love their “You Make Loving Fun” (studio version) and "Silver Spring" from the 1997 concert 'The Dance' !!!
That Silver Spring performance is fantastic!
Silver Springs for sure but not You Make Loving Fun. The Dance version Of You Make Loving Fun is subpar for Fleetwood Mac. I would stick with either the studio version or the promo version that came out to promote the Rumours album (the video where Mick is wearing a turbin sort of thing).
@@fundies2 yes, You Make Loving Fun, studio version. I'll clarify.
A master class in finger picking. There have been times when he was either forced out or voluntarily left the group and they needed 2 guitarists to replace what he does by himself. If I remember correctly this was supposed to be on a solo album he wanted to record but he was encouraged to record a Fleetwood Mac album that became Tango in the Night. Those who know understand how great a guitarist Lindsay Buckingham is and this performance shows it in spades!
I've seen the Mac twice 70's and 90's. You'd think my attention would be on Stevie or Christine, but no, Lindsey is such a phenominal guitarist I couldn't take my eyes off him. Always finger picks, and often two melodies at once. 1974 Mick Fleetwood heard his playing, and immediately went to hire him for the band.
He’s a musical genius.
Like Prince.
Lindsey Buckingham is unique as he plays with no pick. You did choose the correct version, meaning Lindsey solo without the band. This is his song, and the album cut is very different, not bad, but this has so much passion and soul. You can feel the built up with the final climax at the close of the song. (like sex) I was fortunate to see Lindsey in 2006 in an acoustic setting, he opened the show with this song.
The version you guys listened to is generally regarded by fans as the best version of this song that he has done. Beautiful execution, perfect vocals, lots of soul and passion. It's one of my favorites of all time.
Lindsey's fingerpicking style is legendary. 😮
Thats probably the greatest reaction ever....Lex's face lol....
This is why is takes 2 people to replace him. Legend
This performance is from the live recording called "The Dance". The whole show is amazing and Lindsay is a phenomenal talent.
Absolutely! When they perform 'Go your own way' from this concert it blows me AND my neighbours away! :)
wow finally someone reacted to this song and especially this live performance 😍😍😍😍 I love it.
THIS is why Fleetwood Mac AND Stevie Nicks were so good ... Lindsey arranged, directed, played the guitar, sang lead and background vocals and rewrote and/or embellished Stevie's to make them palatable/desirable to everyone. Without him, that band would have been easily forgotten, and I say that, NOT forgetting how much Christine McVie and Mick Fleetwood contributed to the group. The band was floundering until Lindsey came ... and insisted that Stevie come along as part of the deal. You need to listen to more of the songs where Lindsey and/or Christine McVie are featured.
First time I've seen Lex speechless! Great reaction.
You have got to hear the acoustic live performance of Say Goodbye...the guitar is incredible.
Shut us Down is also incredible live.
Brad hit the nail. Lindsey Buckingham singing-playing skills are almost incredible (also he is also a great songwriter and producer). That's why Fleetwood Mac get two singers-leading guitarists each time the man quits the band. And the effect is never the same.
Believe me it is just him. I sounds like 3 guitars lines harmonized together perfectly. This man is easily and truly one of the most underrated guitarists ever.
I'm an old folkie from the 60s-70s...I love acoustic as well. It folks me up! 😉♥
INCREDIBLE guitar skills!!!
Totally crushing on this guy for decades. What a talent.
He's one of the best guitarists ever!
When I started playing guitar Lindsey was the man that I looked at as the man I wanted to play like.
The man is a phenomenal talent, who from all appearances has an ego to match it.
Unless you play fingerpicking guitar you can't fully appreciate his skill and to sing with that emotion on top of that is just mind blowing.
When they replaced him in Fleetwood Mac they had to get two guitarists because no one can play like him. Definitely underrated
No it's because it's hard to find one guy who can play AND sing as well as him.
He's playing the lead and the rhythm at the same time AND singing... Insane. When he was fired from Fleetwood Mac (stupidly) they had to replace him with two guitarists. Genius.
He has continued as a solo artist post Fleetwood Mac and has been underrated in that respect in my opinion. He has a number of solo albums including one from last year. He still tours also.
This version is soooo much better than the poppy studio one the band released. This one has feeling, it's intense, and really shows off how fucking amazing Lindsey is on the guitar. No one plays like him, especially not using a pick. You can see him perform this live in front of a small college class, and he puts just as much effort and emotion into it as he does here. I know it's been said a million times, but he's truly the most underrated guitarist in rock music. Plus his singing, while not spectacular, always fits the song. He's fearless when it comes to expressing himself. You can never get enough of live Fleetwood Mac/Buckingham live performances.
Lindsey played that guitar the way virtuosos play the piano with each hand playing a different pattern/line. To do that on a guitar is next level stuff. Totally leveled up on that one.
This song is so good if I don’t play it at least once a week my energy ain’t the same
His fingerpicking is fantastic. Love the sound of the nylon strings.
It is just him. He’s in a rare class of acoustic guitar players. He and Stevie came to Fleetwood Mac together. They were the finishing touch. Then all hell broke loose. And many snow storms. 🙂🙂🙂
Lindsey was famous for playing a guitar more like a banjo, playing two different lines at the same time. Amazing, just amazing. Lindsey Buckingham and Roy Clark two most underrated guitar masters of all time.
I can't say enough about Lindsey's performance with this song. Not only is it difficult to play and sing, he's playing finger style. He is a master of the guitar. Thank you for watching and appreciating.
Pure musical talent, that's all you can say about Lindsay.
So glad you're watching this. An amazing performance from a great musician.
It looked like Lindsey's singing, hands and fingers are all independent from each other! That was so amazing to watch him and wonder if by the end of his song, did he have blisters on his fingers?!
This video clip is from "The Dance" DVD -- great concert!
Hello from New England..He is the only one playing..Linsey Buckingham is one of the best guitarist in Rock..I love this song.. Peace from the Northeast..
I saw the title and had to hurry up and watch this. So excited you guys are doing this reaction.
Big respect to Brad and Lex for not being afraid to experiment with different types of music. They’re daring to be different and that’s a good thing ❤❤❤❤. Lindsey Buckingham is simply amazing on the guitar 🎸.
This is how I play guitar and sing at work Christmas parties. I'm famous for my Big Love renditions.
that whole live concert live 1997 on I think was mtv or vh1 can't remember but they played all there greatest hits live they were at there peak and prime best live concert every song was played at its a best get the dvd or find whole concert live its a must watch.most times studio org video is best but sometimes live versions are best were they give it there all give you goose bumps and just wow amazing.this is one my favorites also Lindsey riping it slaying it so fast amazing he is .but all the songs they did that concert you have to watch landslide chain rhanna etc all there songs perfection. I was 2 years grad out high school it was magical and up there with live performance I seen led zeppelin Van Halen etc Ill never forget that concert.
He's an amazing finger picker, very fast ... he can sound like 2 guitars. And he's a good composer and at least decent singer. Fleetwood Mac was LOADED with talent. He's also one of the many star musicians in rock who can't read music. So if you're letting yourself get hung up on musical notation and theory ... maybe that's not your path. Try just relentlessly experimenting on your instrument, being patient, and letting your neural network figure it out. That IS a well-worn path to success.
I've seen this in person. It's jawdropping.
I will never forget how I just stopped what I was doing when I first heard him playing that solo on “I’m so Afraid.”
He is a phenomenal guitarist. This video was off "The Dance" Dvd it's an excellent watch.
100 percent agree with all the comments below. Lindsey is an incredible guitarist. Great reaction.
His wind down instrument is the banjo that's a hybrid banjo roll he's doing here on guitar amazing performance
That is from the concert "The Dance". Phenomenal album, was them reuniting after years apart.
Dude, your smile said it all. Twice in the past when Lindsey Buckingham parted with Fleetwood Mac they hired two guitarist to take his place.
This is the definitive version of this song! It gives me chills every time I hear and see this and after the events of today (Christy McVie passed today), I am super emotional about hearing this. It’s great to see your reaction to this. It’s how I feel every single got dam time.
My son is 16. He loves 70's and 80's rock/metal (Van Halen, Metallica, Black Sabbath, etc. I told him one day, "Hey, it's probably not really your cup of tea but check out Lindsey Buckingham 'Big Love'". We listened to it together and his eyebrows definitely perked up and he was like, "Dang..."
All right! I've recommended this one to at least half a dozen RUclipsrs I watch, and you are the first to do it. It's awesome, isn't it? I wish I could play like that. This is the best version I've seen/heard.
Mick Fleetwood added this great married musical duo, Buckingham Nicks, to Fleetwood Mac and took his already epic band into the musical stratosphere.
Stevie and Lindsey were never married…
@@imweakfordeaky thanks, you must be a hit at those parties you don’t get invited to. If there’s a parade in need of a little rain, I’ll call you up to take the piss. Peace
Lindsey...the legend. So awesome, thanks for doing this reaction.
Bleed to love her is another great song of his
Yes, it’s great!
Brokenhearted + Extremely Talented + Loneliness + Guitar = Epic Results
Lindsey can play with such intensity because his hands are cramping. Seriously, he is plucking the strings in a classical fashion with his thumb playing the 2 or 3 top strings in rhythm and his other fingers play melody/ It would likely not vary much as he is also using muscle memory to keep it up. He is a great guitarist.
It’s echo and reverb put over acoustic. He’s by no means one of the best guitarists, but he’s very underrated and he wrote too. Love FM
Lindsey had a song called Trouble that is still one of my favorites. 😃
It's amazing to see and hear Lindsey live! Grateful 😊
Watch the original music video and song for this one with whole group (late '80s) , less acoustics, it's pop-rock with some synths.
This is a great version and very impressive as well. Brad/Lex, this is bluegrass style (fast country music usually with banjo and mandolins) . Also flamenco (Spanish music) guitar finger picking and fast arpeggios.
So no more confuse it with blues (much slower and soulful) , ok? lol
Each member of Fleetwood Mac is a very talented musician on their own. And together, they're an amazing group from all perspectives.
The look of bewilderment on both your faces said it all. Lol. If you can find it check the demo of Stevie Nicks "sisters of the moon" Fleetwood Mac was overflowing with talent
Lex's "Ooooh Ahh" gave me a laugh.
He is doing it all! I don't think there's anyone else who can do this!!!
There’s absolutely nobody else playing and he’s utterly incredible
Lindsey's technique makes it sound like two guitars are playing, but it's only him, he's a guitar genius.
ive seen Lindsey 4 times as a solo artist. He plays that song EXACTLY alike every time he plays it.
He blows my mind every time.
Thank you for checking this out, I mentioned this to you guys a few months back so very happy you got to hear this incredible SOLO performance!
Excellent ! Now must react to the studio version" official music video" of Big Love .Same song- but completely different song. All band members... You'll be presently surprised. Thanks guys great reaction !👍
The album version of Big Love is probably as solo as this version or at least 95%. The song as well as the album started out as a Lindsey solo before he got persuaded by Mick (going bankrupt as usual) to turn it into an FM album. Lindsey credits: vocals, guitars, bass guitar, Fairlight CMI, synthesizer, drum programming, songwriter, arranger, engineer, producer. John and Mick are the only others credited on the song but how much they're on it or buried under how many layers is the question since Lindsey did bass and drum programming.
That's right , I remember now . Lindsey had a lot of good solo stuff/ songs that I think just became Fleetwood Mac on the Fleetwood Mac albums...; ) 👍
I got to see him play this live and it was unbelievable. Never seen anything like that before or since.
Strongly recommend “So afraid“ from the same live performance.
Yes that's Lindsey playing alone. The original studio version has the whole band. This live version he's playing alone. You gotta check him out doing "Never Going Back Again"
Y'all should check out jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan. He sometimes plays 2 guitars or a guitar & keyboard at the same time. He doesn't have any hit singles (or any lyrics to figure out 😂), so you don't have to do a reaction video. Just watch him on your own time.
I'll 2nd that. Stanley Jordan is a superb musician.
