KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Movie Review | Owen Teague | Freya Allan

  • It's yet another "Planet of the Apes" movie, whether we needed it or not. "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" takes place many generation after the events of 2017's deeply moving "War for the Planet of the Apes." But while it features some impressive special effects and thrilling moments of action, it never really justifies its existence or lengthy running time. Directed by Wes Ball, who made "The Maze Runner" trilogy. Written by Josh Friedman. Starring Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon and William H. Macy. In theaters now.

I disagree. The twisting of the words of their Jesus (Cesar). I think it’s extremely timing. It was a joy to watch in theaters and while a spectacle of technology I enjoyed the story. Really was taken by the ending and can’t wait to see what’s next. Is anyone as good as Cesar? No not as of yet but I’m willing to give this arc a chance. Oddly one of the praises yall gave was for the female lead and I thought she was a bit of a weak link.

I loved this one. I loved how the underlying theme is present in the first scene with the eggs. I love the moral dilemma and even more how it plays out. I really didn't know where this was going. I thought it was charting brand new territory until the end, and then I leaned over and whispered to my wife how it relates to the first set of movies. This is not an issue though. It is very well done, and is a major improvement. Somewhere in the middle, they cross a bridge, and I saw the "forbidden zone" scarecrows from the original 1968 movie, and then I heard the music from the original score - all I could do was smile. The effects are seamless and so realistic, I was fully immersed. The story is great. I wasn't expecting it to be this good, and I can't wait to see the next one.

This director Wes Ball was given the task of following an amazing trilogy one of the best , maybe ever. Making this movie now under the guide lines of Disney and wanting to also pay homage to the OG films which the original, being older than Star Wars, I thought he did an amazing job, having just watched every POTA movie, this is based in a never seen before timeline it does get into aspects of religious like / political figures and how their words can be twisted to ones own benefit. That is just as much as the films before have said, Im glad this one didn't try to beat us over the head with the way of water, or every other Disney films agenda these days. That being said, this is the first there is more to build off of, and more character growth to see, I personally cant wait.

I really enjoyed it. It's a little too long but there's not much I would cut. It doesn't need to be made except to make money, but there's a compelling story, a wide range of well-developed characters, everyone has a story-arc, and the craft on display and the clarity of the action set-pieces is incredible - I cannot think of many summer blockbusters of the past 20 years where I would be able to say all of that. And the central message about knowledge, how it's ignored, or distorted with tragic consequences, is extremely timely. It's not perfect, sure, and Alonso's point about the technology still working after all that time did stretch credibility, but for what could have been just a lazy cash-grab, this is a film with a lot on its mind and it has a lot of love for its characters.

    • @TheycallmeMrWonka
      @TheycallmeMrWonka Месяц назад +1

They don't HAVE to exist for other reasons but the good ones do exist for reasons more than just trying to entertain on a basic level. I mean, you could put the most basic movie out time and again but without people actually caring and trying to create something original to it, or with a different look, acting, sets or writing, whatever else, it won't ever be something people care about at all or remember. It's all just disposable entertainment. I think that's the difference. I haven't seen this film so I'm not giving an opinion on it but I do understand that coming at it from the lowest expectations of having things happen on a screen = entertaining is not going to mean something interesting, original or with writing that's good has been created. Doesn't have to be the best thing either but you should have some expectation that they are trying to create a memorable movie for you (on different levels).

  • @martymascarin486

Just caught it. As you both point out, there are enough thrilling action sequences and production values to certainly entertain the popcorn crowd. But the story simply doesn't make much sense. What places Freya Allan's Mae in the vicinity of Noah and his clan in the first place? It turns out she's on a mission of her own but where the heck did she come from, given the end game here??? And how is that the item she's seeking would be at her targeted location? And what's with the virus that rendered humans silent/mute whatever, when a batch of free speakers turn up? That's just for starters. But as you say, the CGI is very impressive in conveying emotion and the scenic details are staggering. What's the motivation behind Proximus Caesar harnessing other apes while scooping up (and knocking off???) humans? Are they slaves to do what exactly? Beyond Kevin Durand's menacing, bestial, chilling scene-chewing rendition of 'What a wonderful day!" there ain't much else goin' on. I'll stop now to avoid spoilers but.....geez! Very considerate of the studios to trot out "classic brands" for the benefit of current generations, boasting superior special effects and production values but lacking the stark, jolting, emotional impact that came with the ending of Charlton Heston's 1968 opus.

@@BreakfastAllDay It is what is believed to have brought about the speciation of the Bonobos w/ the formation of the Congo River isolating the two groups. W/ the common chimps on the north side being omnivores, warring, etc. generally more like us. While the Bonobos on the south are frugivores and most often characterized as more of the “make love (literally) not war” variety.
I had hoped that while Koba in the previous trilogy had been an interesting nature v nurture twist on that view, the series would continue to include their uniqueness in Ape dynamics which has been limited to Chimps/Orangutans/Gorillas.
BTW, have you seen the recent news of an Orangutan being observed to use a medicinal plant to treat a facial wound ?!? Wild !!
Although upon typing this & after just one viewing during which it hadn’t occurred to me, maybe that has played a part in the separation of the Eagle clan & Proxima’s group. And/or given the apparently smaller population of Bonobos they have been bred out of the population over successive generations. 🤷‍♂️
As for this film, to each their own I guess as I loved it. While War is a fine conclusion to that trilogy, for me it truly offered nothing new or unexpected except for the donkeys I suppose. Dawn though I thought was great, exploring a small window of diplomacy between the species & the hawks fulfilling their own prophecies. “Why do we need this” was asked when Rise came out & that series of films wasn’t a waste of time.
And further re differing tastes, I enjoyed this far more than the overly long 2 parter retelling of Dune which (visual quality aside) added very little w/ it’s extra time and actually subtracted quite a bit (so far). After P1 was 🤷‍♂️ I decided to reserve judgment until P2. The first 1/3rd-1/2 of which I was quite engaged by but by the end of P2 I found myself feeling much the same, maybe getting to Messiah / Children or the streaming series will justify it. But as for the current iteration so far I just don’t get what ppl were so engaged by. 🤷‍♂️ Particularly those that are already familiar w/ the narrative in its other forms beyond maybe being a vehicle to bring in new ppl to that fandom which is essentially no different than what you’re accusing this film of in my view.
W/ Noa gaining the knowledge he does in this (astronomical, technological, current & historical ape & human dynamics), I think the Apes series can still have interesting things to say, ideas & plot to mine in the many more than a 1000 years left in the timeline and am encouraged that the makers seem to have a sense of what direction they want to go.
So maybe this version will just end up a cash grab but I’m willing to go on the ride to find out based on what was presented in Kingdom (particularly the exploration of venerated words & legacy). In my view there more to chew on here than the threads that some of the original films hang 1h30m+ on (the original excepted of course).

Kind of a strange last remark. You didn’t like it not for the merit of the product, but that you didn’t think they should have done it to begin with.
For one, the movie itself, for what it is (a big budget CGI Planet of the Apes movie) was really well done. Story was solid (in a Save the Cat, the Heroes journey sort of way, it ticked off all the boxes) the production, sound and effects design were outstanding, and the “acting” was solid (inside all of that mo cap magic). The script and writing was well done. All-in-all it was a solidly entertaining IMAX experience.
But the reason “why this movie” is because the Caesar story ends with telling us how the world began. Now this will show us how the world plays out.
It’s exactly what they did back in the Charleston Heston days and thereafter and the TV shows.
So basically, this is what Hollywood does. And you as a movie critic is confused about this? Have you and moviemaking in Hollywood just met?
“They already had a Bond movie, I don’t see why they are doing another one.”
What a silly review take away.

So how many movies are we away from Charlton Heston showing up?
Sometimes all a movie has to do to justify its existence is be entertaining and have strong storytelling. There is nothing wrong with a 'cash grab" if it's a well-done cash grab.
Not every movie needs to have some DEEP MEANING or have something "profound" to say about something
As for the original franchise from the late 1960s and into the 1970s, I am a big fan of the original movie, which I think is a true science-fiction classic, but I didn't like any of its sequels, regardless of what they might have been about, or had to say.
As for the Andy Selkis trilogy, I am a big fan of the 1st and 3rd movies but didn't particularly like the 2nd one.
I have yet to see this new one.

As for the reason why this movie exists, here's 1 possible theory (given without having yet seen the new movie).Perhaps the reason is nothing more then trying to take the franchise in a new direction that fits better with the Charlton Heston original movie. As much as. I liked the original Heston movie, and the 1st and 3rd Selkis movies, the Selkis movies never really seems to have fit the
Heston original movie (for multiple reasons). I have always wondered how the humans of the Selkis movies became the humans of the Heston movie. I for one would be interested in gaining some insight into that, if a new franchise supplied some.

@@BreakfastAllDay Sorry to correct you, but Jar Jar wasnt the first CGI character. Steve Williams was an effects artist at ILM, the company that did the effects for Terminator 2, and he said that Robert Patrick was the first actor ever, to be used for very early motion capture. Williams wrote the code for the CGI, that made the T1000 possible. He also wrote the code for the effects in The Abyss, and Jurassic Park. These three films, especially Terminator 2, became instrumental in ushering in revolutionary CGI technology. Williams even has his own documentary that came out recently, called Jurassic Punk, which verifies everything Ive outlined. However, most of Terminator 2 had Robert Patrick playing the T1000 with no CGI used. Jar Jar was the first 100% CGI character, from the beginning to the end of a film, to use motion capture, so this might be what you meant.

@@peterlenham3180 While I haven’t seen Spaz’s doc, “sorry to correct you” but I think you’re confusing some of the terminology here.
As far as I recall, they FILMED Robert Patrick w/ reference lines marked on his body & used that to key frame animate the CGI T1000. Literally on top of the actor / as reference to animate & then composited that into the film (specifically for the scene of him walking through the fire).
That’s not the same as motion CAPTURE which records only the motion of the actor based on markers (the suits w/ the ping pong balls) as digital data to which they can then apply to a CGI character model. I believe the first time this was done in a film was in the Total Recall security scan scene where they mapped a skeletal figure to the motion capture markers.
For The Abyss water tentacle & T1000 facial animation they would digitally scan the actors static facial expressions & animate the transitions. This would not really be what we consider today as performance capture but is closer than the T1000 walking as it’s a direct digital capture.
While Jar Jar was definitely the first CGI character on which they used motion capture ultimately as far as I’m aware it was only one of a myriad of techniques they used as they were figuring out how to pull off the character for the film. All of the head & facial performance is key frame animated & the original plan was to do only that & use Ahmed Best’s body that was filmed on set.
Two Towers Gollum was the first time WETA was able to apply real time motion capture to a CGI character model on screen as it was being captured.

If big studios are going to continue inundating the public with these glorified cartoons masquerading as live-action productions, I'd rather have a three-hour Jar Jar Binks movie than another apestravaganza. Come to think of it, Jar Jar looked more tactile than any of these characters do.
