Funnily enough , I remembered that Finnigan upper cut , on the box in 79 , but in later years , when it didn't show on you tube videos , wondered if I'd imagined it . This recording proves I didn't
Terrific fight guile and well picked clean clever punches nicked it for Kevin reckon Tony was a better fighter for that experience. Bought a spare ticket outside wasnt going skint but well worth it.
Harry Gibbs’s , the Don Corleone of Britis Boxing Referee’s, he knew Finnigan was on the way out & the young buck would have his time in the sun , he was bang on with the result but it could have gone either way
As an American, I was always intrigued by Sibson's power. But often like many fighters with "power" his defense and "boxing skills" were not developed to the degree that they should have been. His career would have been more successful as well as more "intriguing" if he had been managed better. But I am sure that is preaching to the "choir"!
Sibson was a good fighter but had to work so his training suffered. Example. He would get up at 6.00am, go for a run and go home, rest and have breakfast and then go to work. After work the gym. If he had earned more money he could have been a full time boxer, which would have had its advantages.
Kevin Fineghan twice fought Marvin Hagler in hagler back yard in the late 70s ....each time it was the same result ..Hagler winning and Kevin badly cut ...but Finneghan was coming on strong in both fights ...so much so that after the first fight the public kinda demanded a rematch but once again cuts played a part ....Hagler cut everyone he fought ( well white fighters ) ...Minter , Finneghan , antuofermo and even Sibbo too ...
Sat with Sibson for a few hours one morning he told me and my mate great stories about Kevin, them 2 and minter were great friends,he said finnegan was a genius,he said one of his paintings was two warships firing cannons 1800s and in the smoke were the faces of Leonard, hagler,Duran, and hearns
I thought sibson won a close decision but harry gibbs favoured finnigan. Gibbs Wasnt happy with sibson for use of the head but finnigan was just as bad
Both finnigan brothers where warriors with massive hearts and good technique but the weak flesh around their eyes was a massive problem plusses they had both been in many bloody wars made it far worse
Good old 70's remember seeing this fight on the BBC. Sibson was robbed harry Gibb was Kate if the Crays in the 60's and was very much part of the gang.
I agree harry gibbs kept warning sibson about the head going in when finnigan was just as bad .gibbs favoured finnigan as fight was probably a draw or close sibson win .in my opinion
Kevin and his brother Chris finnegan were two of the bravest boxers we have ever had, they had heart and guts.....RIP Kevin & Chris Finnegan....
Kevin and Chris very tough men hearts of Lyons. Outside the ring gentlemen . Rip

No improvements would have made Sibson's career " more successful." Like every other middleweight, he couldn't live with Hagler.
@@markcynic808 Not including Ray Leonard of course.
@@stephenobrien5909
No, including Leonard.
@@markcynic808 Strange as he beat Hagler.
I knew most of the Finnegan family, used to drink with most of them ,all great characters 😊

Thats what the refs used to get Jerry quarry for as well
I believe Hagler said Finnegan was the toughest opponent he ever fought.

@@kevingriffiths9787yes I heard the same👍
Sibson two times European champ, never lost in the euro title fights. Also if super middle existed at the time he could have been World Champ.

I am glad Finnegan won. Even though Sibson should have got it. but he was taken liberty's with his head .harry could have took points off it for that.
Sibson
Two great warriors, Kevin was a cagey performer

As anyone seen the full fight? Did Finnegan deserve the decision?
I got the impression that Harry Gibbs had issues with Sibson and so was always going to give it to Finnegan.
