    If close to a blast site, and somehow still alive, rush to shelter and stay there for at least 48h.
    ~ 70% of all radioactive particles will decay after 24h.
    The SAS survival handbook of John Wiseman has a small chapter on this topic.

    This is all quite accurate. I was a British Army NBC instructor during the 80s, which was a 3 day course within our unit. The emphasis then was all about chemical warfare, barely touched on Biological , and very vague about Nuclear war and how to survive . I think that the consensus was that West Germany would be wasted and we'd all be dead anyway. We all wore the dark green Mk2 NBC suits on exercise unless it rained, as chemical strikes wouldn't be viable when it rained, it was all very theoretical. We all washed our suits in the washing machine as the charcoal impregnation made everything black and it made them more comfy. Apparently there were Mk3 suits, which were apparently DPM pattern, kept in the stores for when the balloon went up.

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  7 лет назад +12

      Thanks for all the info.
      Normally the MK3 suit is the green one and the MK4 is the DPM one, they did MK4 suits in desert and woodland 95 pattern, I have two MK3 (one still sealed) and one MK4 in woodland.
      I guess washing the suits in the washing machine destroyed the chemical protection the charcoal offered.
      The Soviets had really uncomfortable thick rubber suits but they are actually a lot better for protection, basically it's like wearing heavy waterproofs but nothing can get through the suit.
      I've made an improvised CBRN suit now using fishing waders, chemical gloves and a raincoat, a lot more comfortable than the Soviet suits but it's totally waterproof which should make it function well.

    • @DavidFraser007
      @DavidFraser007 7 лет назад +8

      Yes, you're right, it's been a long time, 30 years. During training we used an earlier version that was olive green and grey with a detachable hood, it quite flawed in design, guess that was the Mk2. There was a general issue booklet called Survive and Fight. There were also velcro patches that could determine different types of chemical agent.

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  7 лет назад +10

      Yeah I have an old survive to fight somewhere that came with an NBC suit.
      I quite like the MK3 and 4 suits for being comfortable (relatively) but it's a shame they expire, saying that they do have a water resistant coating on, so better than nothing.

    • @thatguy5608
      @thatguy5608 7 лет назад +1

      tizio scemo depends on what megaton bomb hit your city, with current technology probably not, with the shock wave and the 100mph winds from a firestorm would be bad. As for your other question, no. Most nuclear weapons vaporise everything in a 3km radius from a 1megaton bomb, and current bombs are much higher. If by some miracle you did survive you'd be quickly killed by the intense radiation which would cause mass cell death and radiation sickness would get you

    • @adrianomattia5625
      @adrianomattia5625 7 лет назад

  • @flipierfatalbina4757

    I feel like the best way to "prepare for nuclear war" is to try to prevent it through mass organizing. Build up communities of people on any and all working class issues, which would then end up with the conclusion that nuclear war is to be avoided at all costs. The individual material prepping is the same as in this video, but instead of it being individuals or families and friends all fending for themselves, you have communities of survivors who understand that they have the common interest in cooperating. Humans have literally always survived better as a team, and the larger this "team" is, the more likely you're able to fend off the government or whatever. It could also always turn out that you do end up preventing a nuclear war if you do this mass organizing. I mean, if thousands of people march on the nearest nuclear missile silos and pull everyone in their out into the street, I think that might send a message to both sides.

  • @Filiplego1

    So how much time does gamma radiation stay on the surface?
    And also, if I made a underground bunker would that be safe?
    And also nice video!

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  7 лет назад +5

      The Gamma radiation only spreads out when the bomb first detonates, it's why people are blinded who look at the bombs, and yes underground bunkers are far safer than being above ground, assuming you have filtered air coming in.

  • @lucariolps277
    @lucariolps277 6 лет назад +5

    In Switzerland here, although I don't know all the policies. First, because of cold war paranoia from our government, we have enough nuclear bunkers to house 115% of the population. Those bunkers vary in size. Like bunkers beneath hospitals are rated for stronger bombs from a closer distance. The normal bunkers in residential buildings are rated for a 12 megaton bomb from a distance of 750 meters. All bunkers have a filter system to filter out the radiation. After the bombs fall the ABC troops and civil protection would go from bunker to bunker to bring a lot of the population to either the ABC centers. Those are outside of the city's. Or they would bring them to the mountain fortresses. We got 5 of those. All stocked up but only one maned at the moment. The federal reserves (water, gas, food, oil, medical equipment and medicine, etc) would last for 2 to 3 months if they are rationed properly. Plus if you life near a nuclear reactor like Muhlenberg you have iod pills at home just for those situations. Plus we would get a warning 30 minutes in advance if the missiles are detected. We still test our air raid sirens yearly.

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  6 лет назад +1

      I guess the Swiss would survive the best in a nuclear apocalypse more than any other nation in Europe, you probably wouldn't even be directly targeted anyway.

    • @lucariolps277
      @lucariolps277 6 лет назад

      Weaponsandstuff93 even if we were directly targeted, I don't think they would use large hydrogen bombs. Only smaller tactical bombs.

  • @kanmeridoc1784

    while doing research on nukes, I discovered some interesting things to consider. The largest nuclear bomb ever dropped, the Tsar Bomba, actually had less fallout than a much smaller American bomb dropped in the same time frame for testing purposes. It seems the amount of fallout is determined by how the bomb is detonated. If detonated as an air burst there are very few radioactive particles created, the blast actually makes a pocket and never touches the ground. Mass damage from the shockwave to buildings and areas around it, but not so much to the ground. If dropped on the ground and detonated there is a massive amount of fallout created, due to the blast blowing dirt off the ground and irradiating the dust. This seems to be common knowledge, so I don't feel like I need to explain too much of it. What I found interesting however, is that the bit of radiation released by the Tsar Bomba went immediately into the atmosphere and was suspended there for quite awhile. It seemed to have little to no effect on anything. Similarly, if a nuke is dropped onto the ground most of it's particles are also suspended in the atmosphere for a long period of time, but they would probably spread out in a radius as well. Doing more research, I discovered that the consensus on the shelf life for radioactive fallout is roughly 2 weeks. After that the particles have fizzled out and are safe unless there's an ongoing leak of radiation in the area, such as a reactor that melted down. So here's what I'm wanting someone to consider: would it be possible that if the world went into full scale nuclear war, would radiation actually be an issue in any areas except right around where the bombs dropped? If the alpha particles were floating up in the atmosphere for long enough, is it possible that the radiation could die down before it even reaches earth? Obviously there would be localized pockets, and contaminated air streams, but for academics would not the majority of particulates be in a suspended state in the upper atmosphere?

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  6 лет назад +6

      That would assume every nuclear bomb would be airburst which would never be the case in a nuclear war, ground-bursting is useful against armoured targets such as bunkers, missile silos etc.

    • @kanmeridoc1784
      @kanmeridoc1784 6 лет назад +2

      ah yeah, forgot about bunker busters. I was thinking in terms of maximal surface damage in that scenario. Also just stumbled onto strontium 80 and cesium 137. These two long term materials weren't mentioned in my previous research. Hopefully it's never something to worry about.

    If you are in a big city you might be riding the subway/tube and survive the blast. Which may have tunnels that lead to the suburbs where it might be safe enough to be on the surface for a little while heading out further to the countryside.

      The issue is that nuclear bombs cause firestorms, at which point everyone suffocates even if they are in deep bunkers as all the oxygen is sucked into the blast.

    So your advice in the event of a nuclear war is to, live in the middle of nowhere, be well armed, and not downwind of any possible missile target? My first thoughts were, can we get 65,000,000 people on the Isles of Scilly, and how will we fare during the predicted Nuclear Winter?
    I think that we have two choices,
    1) Not to bother with a nuclear war at all, or,
    2) Line the main runway of Brize Norton RAF Station, hold hands and sing, "We'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when."

      maremacd depends, the nuclear catastrophe in Chernobyl has deemed it unsafe for about 20,000 years. If it was a world wide nuclear war, the human race would die out due to nuclear winter which would last about ten years, then a nuclear summer which would snowball because ice caps would melt (they hold a lot of methane a greenhouse gas much higher than CO2) and that would cause mass evaporation of the oceans (water vapour is also a greenhouse gas) and our planet would be like Venus. Hope that helps.

    For people who don't have a gas mask with canister-type filters, what ratings do you recommend for commercial/industrial filters (P100, P95)? What do you think of the commercial/industrial and inexpensive 3M half-piece respirators with the flat round filters?

    • @Weaponsandstuff93

      +KevJYT Mentioned quite a few times that 3m masks are very good, the rectangular shape filter models are better as they can fit ABEK-P filters. As for masks P100 is preferable but I always go by the P3 rating, P3 being close to 100% particulate protection.

Also should I use churches to stay in to protect myself against radiation? Why did you not talk about beta or gamma btw and how long do you think that would last? Thanks.

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  6 лет назад

      Because Alpha is the only radiation source that will be around after the bombs have gone off because it's what Fallout is, beta and gamma from what I've researched only happen as the bomb explodes.

    • @tummywubs5071

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  7 лет назад

      The Soeks one I use in the video is pretty good, I was sent it for free but I think they retail around £120, acts as both a Geiger and Docimetre so you can see current radiation levels and accumulative dose, picks up alpha, beta and gamma radiation.
      If you want to get something retro, the old US civil defense Geiger counters with the alpha prove and speaker unit is really cool, sadly they seem to end up costing more than modern Geiger counters over here but sometimes on American eBay they sell for about $40 with reasonable shipping.

    • @willhughes5885
      @willhughes5885 7 лет назад

      I was looking for something retro actually ahah because like you said they are really cool, I don't have £120 to throw away like that and plus to be fair to that Soeks one it may be good but it doesn't look £120s worth if you get me! Out of impulse I decided to buy a GP-4 gas mask tonight they looked so cool and it was cheap so I thought why not eh! But anyway I will check out the US Geiger counters. US shipping aint that bad anymore so I should be fine. Thank you.

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  7 лет назад +1

      Bear in mind the Soeks one is actually very cheap, most handheld Geigers of its type are around £150-300 normally, often with very primitive screens.
      Make sure if you get a CD-V counter you try and find one with the alpha probe, otherwise it's useless against alpha radiation.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD_V-700
      There's a fairly decent wiki article on them.

    • @willhughes5885
      @willhughes5885 7 лет назад

      Oh right, I have never looked much into Geiger counters although have always wanted one, there is a CD V 700 on ebay for $100 + $70 shipping so that would be £130, I am tempted to do that as it is functional and would make a good display. Thanks for the info!

    how would you get a gas mask in a country were no one sells gas masks? I live in malta btw. I checked Amazon but there are only overpriced s10s and gp5's. Idk if ebay uk ships here. any suggestions? also are gp7 filters safe?

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  7 лет назад

      Go on eBay and look for sellers that ship worldwide, eBay should calculate the postage amount based on your location automatically.
      I'd recommend avoiding Soviet masks because of how expensive it will be to get filters, if Malta is bad for getting masks I would advise going the industrial mask route, that way you're not buying a gas mask but a work related respirator.
      Also, GP-7 filters are probably not safe, they were made in the same factories that made all the other asbestos filled filters.

    • @bigturn1051
      @bigturn1051 7 лет назад

      I checked ebay (uk) and the shipping prices altogether are not TOO bad but since malta is a small country. is surrounded by sea (fallout) and is rising in popularity (hence terrorism) I would like to prep in about 7 years

    I both liked and hated this video. Nuclear war is extremely terrifying. It is highly unlikely, but IF it happened, there’s nothing at all good about it. It’s not a matter of surviving it (because you really won’t), it’s about how long you survive after the initial attack. Radiation, civil unrest, government crackdown, starvation, radiation sickness, etc. in any case, you’re doomed.

    Threads is a pretty good film, not seen The War Game, will check that out, i have a feeling where i am i'd be fucked, would defo have been fucked years ago as i live near RAF Daws Hill that has a nuclear bunker and was also a U.S air force base too, so may be very close to a direct hit - however that's all closed down now so who knows.
    If i had the grounds to make one i would defo build a fall out shelter though.

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  7 лет назад

      Yeah in some ways though I guess a direct hit is the fastest way to die in those scenarios, the real unlucky ones are the people who survive the blast but suffer from the radiation sickness, cancers, and burns from the blast and fallout, only to die within a few weeks anyway.
      I'd actually wonder how easy it would be to convert a basement into a survival bunker, obviously, it wouldn't be anywhere near as good as an actual bunker, but if a house had the correct foundations you'd probably have very good levels of protection.
