How a good documentary should be. This is way more compelling and powerful that a sugar coated bland story like most shows and entertainment are today where the story is a cookie cutter of thousands of other stories

The government is truly evil. I could only imagine what those men heard and felt and saw when that nuke went off. To be able to stand a few miles away from a radiated bomb and feel the force, feel the searing heat and it being as bright as the sun to see your skeleton through your hands and body...... Plus re-living that event over and over and over in dreams and waking up from PTSD....Those men were used as guinea pigs by the very Government and Military :(

I can't imagine Russian vets who are probably killed if they spoke just one word like these men did. I like to really take into consideration on what they say because tomorrow is never promised.

My father was one of the men. He severed in the military from 1944 to 1958. He was active in the South Pacific Islands during WWII and he did two tours in Korea. Between WWII and Korea he was involved in the testing. I remember him telling me back around 2000 bits and pieces from when he was involved. At the age of 90 when he was dyeing of Leukemia he told me everything . What he saw, how it felt and what is was truly like being the government's guinea pig. He father five children. All of us children that he fathered has some form of birth defect and illness, including cancers early in life. I am the last child born of the family and I had stage II prostate cancer at the age of 38. Now I am 50 and I have chronic illnesses that the doctors can't explain. All of my siblings have had the same issues that I have with some form of caner and illness that can't be explained. We are all healthy and active. The doctors say it is genetic. Sure it is.
Do the carnivore diet with grass fed beef. it'll all clear up in like 1-2 years.

I think it's because movie is...well..just a movie and our brain isn't build to process this kind of devastation. I think that's why there was such a disorientation like he said. I mean, imagine a flash light so bright you can see all your blood vessels and bones in your hand. And after this experience, you have to feel extreme heat and shock wave...and after you finally stand up you have this giant psychedelic mushroom cloud raising into the sky while people around you loosing their shit. And as a cherry on the top you get the real horror, the silent killer, the invisible killer, the radiation and something in your body is telling you "get the fuck outta here, it's not good for you at all, I can feel it".
I think that worst part psychically was all the panic around you and you seeing it and hearing it. If there were two people, I think you wouldn't feel such a horror as seeing thousand boys shitting their pants and calling for their mothers..either way. I believe human race doesn't need atomic bomb. Atomic energy, yes..not bombs or rays or whatever that could be used to destroy.

My grandfather was part of the Manhattan project. The army took him from his job at Du Pont where he was working on a way to store nuclear waste in glass and made him a part of the military research. All those years... he never told anyone. He died rather suddenly from a very aggressive cancer that had come out of nowhere. Or so the family thought. The family hired a lawyer based on this type of cancer. One discovery led to another and the govt ended up telling the family in a redacted but rather lengthy report, about my grandfathers service to the country. He was a kind man w a soft smile and a bellowing laugh. I miss him.

I didn't give a damn before but Christ almighty I don't think it's possible to forget what I just watched. The editing here is tremendous, but what these men experienced... I don't want anyone else to EVER have to experience that. I cannot put into words how this video made me feel. I suspect my grandfather was one of these men, although he never spoke about it. He died of massively metastasized lymphoma at the age of 68, he had cancer in every part of his body. He was never deployed but I'll be damned if the trauma wasn't obvious. This doesn't just make me sad, it makes me furious. All I feel right now is pure rage, rage against the corrupt, devious, dishonest, and destructive organization that is our "government". Tyrants - we are ruled by tyrants. The day of reckoning is coming for these snakes, they will burn in the fires stoked by the hatred they have cultivated within us. The only enemy we have as a people are the individuals responsible for this sort of tyranny. There's never been a better time to reinvent the guillotine...

It sounded like strong words, I got the impression that it would be the last thing to do is go to Canada and that he'd rather do that over experiencing another nuclear test. But above all, what these humans went through was the very polar opposite of humane, to hear the story of a General being freaked out was enough to tell me how wrong they had it back then, as in nobody seemed to of known how horrific it would of been besides maybe the most very top people, it's saddening. Those survivors deserve the utmost respect, honour and recognition of bravery considering what we now understand about radioactive materials & explosions.

I was a Military Intelligence Specialist in the USAF from 1969 to 1975, working in the Strategic Air Command, doing targeting and codes work...and this moved me. In just one of the B-52s I did targeting for, there were FOUR 9Mt weapons...hundreds of times more powerful than the bombs these men experienced. The fact that these men were denied any disability benefits from VA sickens me.
My Dad witnessed 6 Atomic/hydrogen bomb test, at the Marshall Islands, when he was in the Marine Corp.
He has had numerous health issues. The United States government does nothing for these men! It’s a crime, shame on us.

About 15 years ago, there was a deacon at my church who told me about this. He would come over to my place and we would talk. He told me about this experience when he was in the Pacific Islands. He said one time they lined them all up and had all of the men put sheets around their backs and over their heads, turn away from where the blast would be and place their hands over their eyes. He told me that when the blast went off, he could see the bones in his fingers, just like these men described. After the blast was over, all of the sheets were collected. They had imprints of the men on them!
He also told me that the upper brass and their wives would fly overhead to watch the big show, while they were down below getting zapped.
Don died in the early 2000s after having health problems.

My God, I have never seen a bunch of people in more pain. I want to give each of them a hug.
I admire the courage it took for them to relive the experience in order to break the silence that has held them captive for decades! In the beginning, it was heartbreaking to see how they appeared to be locked in a distant/inner world, but overcame that state to describe the horrors of the event they (not having any idea of the harmful effects) unwittingly participated in. Often, one of them faltered in the telling and momentarily retreated to his safe inner space. These are truths we, as fellow humans, need to know. We may differ in opinions, skills, education, interests, politics, religious affiliations, and ethnic/cultural backgrounds, but we are all, by design, HUMAN BEINGS.
You can see it in their eyes……they’ve all been traumatized. Just with regards to the culture of secrecy that surrounded them. Not being able to talk to each other, or anyone else about what they witnessed.

My late grandmother who was on the neighboring atoll named Rongelap, told me that she saw the light while playing outside with other local kids. Then came the nuclear fallout which affected the whole community forever. She had shared her stories many times with media. I’ve been to Enewetak on Runit island where the Nuclear waste is stored. I was about to join the army and he told me about being a lab rat, “they told us all to get in the trench and keep our heads down and never talk about it, it was really something.” That’s a lot coming from my grandpa, he never had much to say and when it was a bad experience he would skim, the worse it was the more skimming.

My great uncle was one of them. He passed away years ago, but I still remember what he said.
He was deaf to an explosion blowing out his ear drum. Still, he was the most talkative and loving man. He would joke around about anything, but if you ever brought up war or the past he would be in stunned silence.
I remember I went to go visit him for a week one time as a child. I asked him about his experience. All he could tell me was, “he’s never seen so much evil in this world”. I had never heard him sound so upset. To date, it is still profound to me just because how out of character it was for him.
Much love to him and anybody who has a family member apart of this.
Most real veterans are like that about war. PTSD is common among wartime veterans.
I knew a guy when I was a kid, he went through this. He lived in Riverside CA. He is passed now, He had a hard time with life because of these tests.

I am also a vet, and have a lot of friends who are very sick from burning shit and whatever else while overseas. I agree, we were and are nothing but test subjects. I saw another interview where several men said it was “ungodly” and just so intense like “it was never supposed to exist on earth”. I can’t imagine having to live your life (or lose it) having to experience such an evil creation tested on you like you’re a lab rat. You’re sent out to defend the very government who did that to you. Just disgraceful. And so horribly saddening.
After 23 years of working on nuclear weapons in the USAF I've often wondered what effects of this has caused to my health. No, no exposure to weapons blasts, but long term exposure to ionizing radiation. Even more concerning is the exposure to all the weird chemicals used in cleaning all the parts and components; plus the test and handling gear.
THIS SHOULD BE SHOWN IN EVERY SCHOOL FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL GENERATION WHO HAS NO CONCEPT OF SUCH THINGS BEFORE THEY JOIN THE MILITARY

As a OIF/OEF Veteran, when I hear these men describe seeing the bones lost it. Nightmares are always remembered so vividly. We all have our own nightmares.

My Dad, John Roddy, also suffered from watching those tests. He was an artillery colonel, who had fought in two wars. Dad died young from an unusual blood disease, probably caused by the atomic blasts. Thanks for bringing this to light.
One of the things I noticed of all of these men.. when you look closely... they have signs of aging on one side of their face over the other... and I have no doubt in my mind that their "aged" side is the one they faced to the explosion first... It really is a travesty that they were commanded to face such a destrucive force without informed consent.
And despite my distaste for such destruction..
I can ONLY show my reverence and utmost respect to these men that were forced to witness the worst of humankind.

And to think, these men continued to live in & stand behind the very same country that committed these unspeakable acts against them. These poor men. You can still see the raw emotions on their faces; a small measure of the ongoing impact of the singular experience that they had to bear alone. Their sacrifice went above and beyond the line of duty.
In addition to these men's words and memories, the ambient soundtrack of this production is downright chilling.
Probably one of the most important videos I've ever watched. These men are so brave for sharing these intensely traumatic and difficult stories. Let's hope it was not in vain.

I learned of this in school, got to see old footage of commanders far far behind a line of men, watching their bones show through their hands. I always thought to myself that these people were in awe of this device as the harbinger of death, all the while I was being taught the "awesome" power of the device that saved the world from war... I'm surprised more people don't know about this, it's horrific.

14,000 men?!?! The government needs to compensate these men. The VA needs to get them whatever they need. I have the highest respect for our Military, but there needs to care for men like these when they experience these horrors. Just like there needs to be care for the Troops coming home from war. These men need to be treated like war heroes, just like the men and women that serve overseas. Our Vets deserve the best care possible.
But unfortunately, we will never git the kind of care we deserve & we should git all the care possible to us

foley15136 my Dad needs/ed hearing aids. He witnessed 6 of these test. Since it was top secret, it was not on his discharge paper. We went to the VA, spent all day going from office to office. When we went to the last office the Agent Orange vets, the personnel behind the counter said, “there is no such thing as Atomic Veterans.” My Dad is a gentle person. But, after walking around all day, being pushed aside, he lost it. He didn’t raise his voice or cuss, he said “How dare you accuse me of lying.” We left and notified our local rep. He did nothing.
PS He never did get the hearing aids, the law was changed in the early 2000’s if you earn more than a certain amount, you are not eligible to get hearing aids.
Truly sorry guys for what you've gone thru. But thank you for your service, 100%.
My Grandpa served in Vietnam. He was around agent orange/worked with it during his service. He ended up getting horrible cancer/issues later in life far surpassing simple cigarette smoking. He died from his cancer earlier than he would have without it. The government denied a vet who was proud of his service any compensation or recognition! If your doing something that makes your soldiers sick the least you can do is acknowledge their issues and help them.
The look on the faces of those great men says it all to me.... OMG

There were several movies and documentaries that I had seen before seeing Oppenheimer:
This, Barefoot Gen, Vice's "What A Nuclear Bomb Feels Like", Pica Don, and White Light, Black Rain. When I saw Oppenheimer, I immediately had chills and held my breath when the bomb exploded because I already knew the damage these weapons do to humans.
This is heart breaking. That they couldn't even seek treatment or talk about what they experienced until 1994 is just inhumane.

Operation Dominic, 1962, Johnson Atoll. Ships company and our Marine squadron participated in 36 atmospheric detonations. I’m 78 now, battled heart disease for past 22 years. No way of knowing if my illness was from the exposure, but have a wonderful family and life. Simper Fi folks….

My uncle Andy was a part of something similar. I don't know exactly where he was, as he died before I was born. But my grandmother has recently been telling a lot of family stories and secrets. She said he talked about many of the same things these men described. The lights, the colors, the huge plumes of smoke. The sound that roared in his ears for days and days afterwards. I hope to god in my lifetime, we never have to see another bomb tested near people, or heaven forbid dropped on any country. It was indeed, l was just stunned into silence. The looks on their faces, eye's that have seen something, they should never have witnessed. l will not forget them, and l do give a damn. To hear their words, it was simply chilling. l am not even an American, and as l type this, l have goose bumps. That's how much these Soldier's effected me. l could also feel, the abandonment they are feeling. l will never forget this.

I had an uncle that I never got to meet. Uncle Rene was a Naval Officer on one of those boats exposed to the bomb. He was dying and our family drove from California to Louisiana so my mom could see him in the hospital. They-gov told his wife to take him home to die. We kids were not allowed to go to the hospital. One of my mom’s sisters took him to Lourdes/ France..he was not cured, but was no longer was in pain. I grew up having drop drills from first grade to 5th grade. The kids today don’t know squat of what will happen if the war in the Ukraine goes “hot”. Pass the stories down, it’s more important than you think. My prayers for you and your families.
