- As a creator and frequent watcher of camera reviews, I have been extremely frustrated by the amount of non-sense opinions on action cameras, especially this past year. Companies are paying creators/influencers left and right to promote their cameras and give a heavily biased opinion. I've seen this start to trickle to unpaid reviews because of people being so quick to jump on the hype train. I was honestly sick of that. This is a no bull shit review that compares the cameras head to head in the ways that I really use them.
This is an unfiltered, not sponsored, brutally truthful comparison of the GoPro Hero 13 Black vs. DJI Osmo Action 4.
At first glance if you look at specs, you may be wondering what the point of getting the GoPro 13 is over the GoPro 12 or the Action 4 and honestly initially I felt the same. GoPro freezes all the time when I dive so I ditched them and bought two action 4 and even dive without case, well thank you for he review, I am going action 5 lol
100% understand where you're coming from and I've definitely had freezing issues in the past, but with the GoPro 12, they fixed a lot of those issues in my experience. I had issues with the Action 4 battery charging and before that, Action 3 batteries were wonky so they definitely both have issues. But I definitely understand your frustrations and have felt them myself. I still think for my needs, especially with the hydrophobic coating on the glass, the GoPro 13 is the best option, but can't blame you for waiting for the Action 5 if you like it for diving specifically.
@@ConnorTrimble the action 5 has been great for its auto record when dive down, i don’t need to press that button hence save myself 1 or 2 button time on breath hold which is critical when spearfishing.
but i have found out action 5 is too much on HDR or dynamic range gimmick for its direct out image is overexposed for at least a stop. i had to -0.7 ev to compensate that. gopro is very good in direct sunlight still.
now my gopro is always on the very long stick just to capture dolphin, whales and sharks or kelp paddy. nothing else. still does the job tho.
Interesting review, but the key test will be the GoPro 13 vs the DJI Action 5.

@@lakesandfells based on how biased all of the reviews have been by influencers/creators pushing the Action 4 over the GoPro 12/13 I don’t think they’ll allow a totally unfiltered opinion like this one was.
Honestly huge respect to GoPro for letting me be transparent and also how the fixed issues after like connecting the DJI Mic IIs + underwater mode coming soon 🤌🏽

The interchangeable lens on the GoPro 13 and the Anamorphic lens really caught my attention.
100% the anamorphic looks crazy! It feels like GoPro is leaning heavy in to the cinematic look vs. just out of box, basic user friendly-ness DJI seems to like
Something worth pointing out is the GoPro tends to lean more yellow/warm with its white balance and DJI is extremely blue. Let me know your thoughts on the video. I'm clearly pretty sick of reviews being so heavily biased from other influencers. I'm a HUGEEE fan of DJI and own three of their drones. And even though the GoPro 13 didn't advance/progress as much as I'd like to have seen, it's still better than the Action 4. The gap is shrinking though and the door is wide open for DJI to catch up within 1-2 versions of cameras it honestly feels like.
On paper, Gopro does have alot more going for it, but actually using it yourself, the Gopro drives you nuts. The Gopro overheats, freezes, slow charing. These are just absolute dealbreakers for me, day to day usage, the Action 4 is just so much simpler. However, the DJI Mimo app isn't up to Google App Store regulations so thats kinda sus, but I just uninstalled it after updating the firmwares.

I have a very specific use case and before buying the GoPro Hero 13 I was wondering one thing: do you know if it has the ability to connect as a webcam via UVC? Most prior GoPros required special software to use it as a webcam on the computer. I was wondering if this one is plug and play because I would not be using it with a windows or mac PC and can't use the webcam software on it.

Hey, thanks for the review! One question: Is it possible to film/photograph underwater with the macro lens? e.g. in shallow water when snorkelling?
That would be an absolute game changer for me, as my mirrorless camera with underwater housing and macro attachment lens is not very travel-friendly.

You can ! I took it freediving. The focus distance gets pulled a bit farther out due to refraction, but it's way more crisp than the stock lens up close
Was going to tell you it isn't officially advertised/promoted to be used underwater, but you can and the guys at GoPro, AKA Abe have been testing and the initial results seem really solid. I haven't tested myself yet though.

The first thing i noticed was the details in the highlights/clouds as you ran at Kapiolani Park with action 4😮
100% but I think it’s because the Action 4 tends to under expose which you can adjust with GoPro but it’s definitely a personal preference thing.
Great comparison video. Seems like Action 4 and 5 is a bit more user friendly out of the box but GoPro can do more for professional users.

Hey Connor this video was amazing. I just wanted your opinion, I was able to find a deal for TWO Gopro hero 12's lightly used for $500 USD. Mainly looking to do motorcycle content, and having 2 angles peaked my interest and thought it was a good idea to pick them up, OR do you think its worth buying JUST the 13 brand-new?
The 12’s don’t have GPS unfortunately so I’d suggest the 13 if you ever want to project where you are, speed, etc.

Me too, I think the in-camera audio on the GoPro is more full sounding and prefer it over the Action 4
@@ConnorTrimble I actually bought the Osmo 4 but returned it the next day. I saw so many good reviews but was disappointed because it started to warm up after 4 minutes of just sitting there. I’ll look into the GoPro 13. Thanks for your video

Good summary👍, Gopro seems good but the upgrade is to small compared to Hero 12.
Thank you!! 100%, felt small at first for me, I even trashed it in an unboxing video. But there's lots of small improvements that make it so much better with the new labeling/organization, mounts, improved modes, GPS is back, connecting to DJI Mic IIs, and a new water mode coming soon.

You have not shown how the stabilization works in dense forest and in low light. In both of these cases the gopro performs worse.
I'm sure the surfer will go surfing in dense forest with low light in his next video.
Totally understand your sentiment, but I tested on roads and other conditions that I didn’t show and the GoPro stabilization was always better.
The HDR in tricky lighting conditions on the GoPro is better than the Action 4, but I didn’t do extensive testing here. I’m honestly waiting for the 5 to come out and then am going to take it to some water falls and more free diving comparisons.
I was pretty shocked with the low light though. The GoPro really isn’t bad and I’d argue might be better and with the 200mbps bit rate with GoPro labs you’d get wayyyyy more information and be able to déboisé it easier/better.

I've been using my GP11 'maxed out' in protune + GoPro labs setting bitrate max, shooting flat with low sharpness in 5.3k and then editing it afterwards and man its so incredible, nothing else comes close. IMO shooting out of the box with a GoPro is really leaving so much performance on the table!
100000% GoPro Labs with the cam maxed out is crazy.
Unfortunately when you max your camera out like we prefer to do, it CAN negatively impact the battery life and also the stability of the camera. GoPro puts the camera in the box at a safe place where it'll perform best for most average users which is why I did the testing how I did. But maxed out is the way to go and I think sacrificing some stability/battery life is worth it since I know how to deal with it easily with a hard reset.

Thanks for the comment. --> If you are really wanting to fine tune your GoPro I really like using GoPro Labs and I increased my bitrate to 200mbps (more info in the frame/higher quality) and decreased sensitivity for white balance and exposure. This was the shift in color/brightness isn't as jarring which I think is pretty incredible to be able to fine tune this. It's really useful if you fly FPV too.
I agree with a lot of your points, but every video I've seen testing the DJI Mic 2 with the Gopro 13 sounds like a bad quality phone call, maybe it will be improved later on . Let's see that Gopro labs video!
If you’re talking about the AirPods, I completely agree. But if you’re on a motorcycle with a helmet on for example, some audio is better than no audio.
I think the media mod kit with the shot gun mic is still the best and 1/3 the price of the DJI mics. That’s what I suggest getting if you’re going to be close to camera because you don’t have to charge it and the less pieces of gear to worry about, the better!

Thank you! I only had two days to film before traveling for a couple of weeks but I totally agree. I want to test in a dark shadowy environment like a waterfall.
But I will say, every dynamic range test I did and every stabilization test was won by GoPro and I didn’t show a lot of scenarios I tested it where it was more tricky light but boring scenes of roads, etc.
I want to test in the cold as well but that’s just not possible for unpaid videos at this time. That was a hugeeee area the Action 4 was incredible with. BUTTT I couldn’t even get my action 4 to charge to 100% over night a few times which was wack. So it isn’t as reliable and consistent and many make it out to be from my experience which I admit is limited, but still.

Now the Action 4 is $210. The fact they go toe to toe and the 13 Black cheapest price is over $300
100%, but the Action 5 didn't have a major leap in tech like anticipated. but you're right, I think DJI might even just drive down crazy prices until they run GoPro out of businesses over a few years and then once their competition is gone they can raise their prices again.... conspiracy on it though haha
How could sensor size be marketing? It really makes dji footage much better in low light conditions. I use gopro for mtb, and even in day time when I ride in forest the image may be quite noisy
If their sensor is bigger, why aren’t they able to get 6k out of it? Also 200 bit rate like the new GoPro 13…. It just feels like GoPro’s software engineers are getting way more out of their sensor some how. I hope this changes with the action 5 though!
@@ConnorTrimble They have fewer pixels on a bigger sensor. This makes each pixel more sensible to light, so it works much better in low light scenarios. Insta360 ace pro has the same sensor as DJI, combined with ai it's the best performing camera in low light scenarios. Though it's not perfect anyways
@@whekin yeah I understand in theory it should make it better in low light, but honestly even in mid-day conditions the grain was a lot worse in the shadows on the Action 4 which theoretically should be wrong. I was pretty disappointed when pixel peeping which is why I say it feels like a marketing gimmick. But I would NOT have said that until comparing files next to each other and is part of the reason I’m so shocked with the results of this video and am saying the GoPro 13 is absolutely better still.
*not by a whole lot, but it’s noticeably better in most scenarios. Especially if you’d use manual white balance, it’s not even close with the quality of the 5.3k > 4k files. Really hoping DJI steps it up with the 5, which I think they will 100% and possibly pass GoPro
Subject color is soo bad on dji!! The face was dark in the dji footage all the time despite being in well lit situation i don't understand how ppl are fanboying over dji soo much lol 😂
I feel the exact same way.
GoPro leans pretty heavy yellow/warm which you can see in clouds a lot, but it's such an easy fix with GoPro Labs to just slightly lean cooler and I think the GoPro 13 is top notch. Will do a video on that someday haha.
Amazing video, finally a comparison that doesn't scream "paid-content" and finally someone who talks about GoPro labs, it's refreshing after all the bs test comparing them in low light sitting on a desk to see someone actually use them like what they're intended for. 🙌

Apprecite the honest review. All the IG posts have been a bit annoying. I know there can be some advantages with DJI, but it was great seeing a detailed review.
100% so over the fake paid posts on RUclips and Instagram hyping the Action 4 so blindly. It's a great camera, especially underwater with auto white balance, but other than that, not really. Especially if you use GoPro Labs!
So gopro is good for land use and not underwater but Dji is good underwater and ok on land
GoPro is better with water drops, but not as good underwater. So GoPro for surfing, but now UW

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited to see what the Action 5 is going to be bringing
First video I’ve watched that favors GoPro. Starting to wonder if all the other videos are lying.
I think there's a few reasons there:
1.) People are being paid to say DJI is better and NOT saying it's an ad
2.) People who ride the hype train of these bigger creators just want to follow what's trendy and it's fun to knock the king off their perch
3.) The Action 4 is really solid, but the H13 had all of the small improvements the 12 was missing to make it undeniably better.
There's a huge issue with lack of transparency online with influencers/creators promoting products and I make my money as a commercial photographer/director/producer mainly using REDs, DJI drones and r5's with a GoPro as a back up cam. My career doesn't depend on making money and being a blow hard for which camera is trendy and I wanted to make an honest review.
I genuinely thought the Action 4 would stack up better, but from the plastic/glass quality being worse all the way through, GoPro had a lot more to offer, especially for a commercial/professional standard, particularly when trying to get cinematic shots and you need a lot of control. That's where my bias leans + in the water, but I don't try to hide that in the video, or at least I don't think I did.
But I hope this video helped you and if you have any questions, I'm happy to answer! Honestly just stoked to see the Action 5 and want to see it push GoPro or beat it and that's the best case scenario for consumers for the tech to keep pushing hard

Honestly I kind of hope it is so action cam tech is forced to keep pushing super hard. But DJI would have to add soooooo much on the software side to catch up, I can't see if happening in one generation. I think the Action 6 will be better and finally make the leap, but I don't think the Action 5 will.
