New imaging sensor with better low light, depth and altitude sensor, OLED displays, dual Mic 2 support, more battery life, better thermals, and... built in memory.
Thank you for a detailed comparison. It seems all these cameras cannot get rid of the fish eye look even on dewarp. The left and right side always stretch more than the centre. This is probably because of the small lens and focal length. I have the Action 3 and will keep it for now.
Potato Jet git 203 minutes (over 3.5h) at 4K in 4:3 with two DJI Mic 2s connected, AND he connected to the camera several times in that period via DJI Mimo over wifi so that couldn't have helped. Seems like the camera is very efficient.
Thanks for the review. I have a veery old action camera, Gopro hero3+ I was considering to buy the hero 13 black but in the end I just ordered the Dji action5 pro, hope I won’t regret buying it :)
I’ll be interested in the comparison in low light with the Ace Pro 2 when it comes out. Totally agree, though, that the GoPro in good light looks better and definitely more cinematic. Could ND filters on the Osmo equal some of that out?
Wonderful review and fair comparison. The spec boost is incredible. The only thing i see that I dislike is how it overexposes in sunlight and skintones are strange and flattened. I think it's a Chinese preference. My Xiaomi 14 does the same for portraits. Is there a permanent EV compensation or custom video mode you can setup?
Would recommend to test action cameras in action filming setting (50/60 fps and higher), in which they suppose to be used. Even thou you "only" runing or hiking. It is still action (at least some sort of it). Thanks for the comprehensive review!
Great review again! I don't see the point in the OLED display being colour accurate in case of an action camera. You cannot do much about the colours when you shoot. You just frame the shot and go. Visibility is another thing.
The main advantage to the OLED is the viewing angles, brightness, and contrast. It makes it easier to use and I guess color accuracy can be useful if you're messing with the white balance in the settings. But yeah, not 100% necessary just a perk.
FYI. The 4 hours of battery life comes from the settings of 1080P at 24fps in a 77 degree room. Not ideal if you ask me so I’m not sure who the hell would be using that for an action camera. Still impressive cam though. Looking forward to seeing the Ace Pro 2 in comparison. That low light test is awesome for the Action 5 pro
Hi. I'm new to your contet. I am in a huge dilemma about getting rid of the Gopro cameras I've been using for my travel vlogging. I now own the hero 12, and I hate the guts of me for falling again into Gopro's net. The major problem I face with the Gopro is the horrible blury and shaky footage anytime I need to use the camera for indoors, low light situations, or at night. All because, of course, you can't have the stabilization mode on in low light. Or worse when I vlog outside in the heat and my Gopro keeps overheating on me and then I must go down to 1080p instead of 4k and then again the footage is blury and shaky. Finally, should I buy the new dji 5 Pro and stop using the Gopro? Please reply to that. Much appreciated.
My action 5 gets here today and looking to choose between Kingston 256GB Canvas Go Plus microSDXC Card | Up to 170MB/s or lexar 256GB Professional 1066x micro SD Card w/ SD Adapter
The Action5 runs very smoothly, the battery lasts forever in direct comparison... But... the quality of the videos is simply not that good, to put it mildly. In a direct comparison to the Hero13 you can see clear differences. Highlights are often shown worse than on the Hero13 and in general the whole thing looks very flat and often even like a fog. Whether this is due to the low bitrate and whether it will improve with an update, nobody can say at the moment. But what I can tell you... don't believe everything that influencers say or compare. I have a video of the Hero13 4k60fps on my channel and it looks simply brilliant and better than anything else I have seen on the action cam market in 2023/24.
The HDR looks super forced trying to save the blue sky outside the trees creating a weird fringe around every tree. Can the HDR be turned off to maintain a natural contrast?
I'm likely going to go with the Action 5 Pro. My hero 11 black just stopped working (still under a year and I have the receipt) so I'll get that replaced but I just picked up the dji mic 2 set and in my specific need I have two people I need to record audio from. I seen you mention you can connect the 2 dji mics to the action 5 pro but does it allow to record locally on the mics internal storage? I want to get that 32bit float audio recording. Also have you ever used the usb-c to 3.5mm cable on these cameras?
The 4 hour claim is at 20° recording in 1080p24fps with both front and rear screen and all WiFi/bt disabled. So it’s 100% just a chipset encoding efficiency boost for lower quality streams it seems
Go pro, stil best image quality. The only downside is night filming AND battery. I use GoPro 7Black and never had a issue with overheating but to be honest Im filming skiing, biking and motorcycling. Batteries as I said are disaster you’ll need bunch of them if you want to be sure that you’re going to capture everything on a day trip.
I am new to this with action cameras, so choosing between these is really hard. I mainly shoot action footage at night, going for rides in cars, on bikes or just shooting cinematic night footage of my own car at different locations at night. I know now that the DJI is the superior option in terms of price/performance at night, but I'm a bit confused as there seems to be many mentioning low bit rate. What is that, and does it affect footage quality that much? Also, should I go for it regardless, just basing off what I will record? I of course will record in daylight too, I'll just take more photos and videos in lower light settings for those "Need for Speed"-vibes.
DJI recently released a firmware update that allows you to adjust the bitrate from normal to “high”. To be honest though it doesn’t really make a difference in the image quality. It seems like people just like complaining about a spec. But the option is there now if you want to shoot high bit rate at the expense of overheating and eating up more battery!
@@ChaseTheSummit oh okay, so in reality the bitrate plays such a small role that it is essentially just a specification and nothing more, atleast compared to the alternative cameras out there?
@@aswedishkid2492 there’s a difference between bitrates but you need a very trained eye and the right footage (imagine fast moving trees) to notice it. In reality just look at the footage. Which one looks best to you?
@@ChaseTheSummit that's what I can't decide, I mean for realistic footage I'd go for the DJI but the Gopro is more cinematic, but for quality there really is no clear difference tbh, atleast not on youtube which of course could be misleading due to compression during upload or such
Returned the DJI Action 5. Really bad image quality. They may fix the bitrate later, but I’m not waiting around for it. I’ll stick to my Pocket 3 for now.
Would there be a good reason to own both Action 5 and Ace Pro 2? I have an old Go Pro 8 but tired of it and over the firmware issues. I guess if I went skiing I would opt for GP13 but for diving Action 5. For dash cam Ace Pro 2 I always wonder would anyone own all 3 action cameras if money wasn’t an issue? And would they end up drifting towards using 1 camera only after 3 months of usage?
It's a tough one. I have the AcePro and took it to some city tours. Honestly, the feature to continue a recording and record into one continuous file beats all other aspects. I need to admit that the DJI's night mode outperforms the pure video on the Insta360. Very impressive. The internal memory is a smart move, aswell.
@@AthifKhan Insta is competing with DJI now, they'll release in early to mid October most likely, the camera has already been registered, they release in november last year because they had a last minute issue with lenses that forced them to postpone
I had understood this camera doesn't have GPS, how are you overlaying a route in the video? Also the audio sounded way better using the Action 5 Pro internal mic than when you tested it with the DJI Mic 2. Another thing worth mentioning, I live in Las Vegas and tried using my GoPro 360 to do videos on my mountain bike, out on the trails, as well as in my garage at 9pm working on my project 4Runner, the GoPro overheated both times only twenty minutes in, and I actually found I was simply unable to use it for anything I wanted in this city, because it would always power off. I mention this since you said cameras will likely not overheat in realistic situations, but that may simply not be true.
1.) As mentioned in the video you can pull in GPS data from other platforms like Garmin (from Garmin watches), or Apple Health (apple watch, or any 3rd party option like COROS, Suunto, Polar whatever.) You can also pull in any GPX or FIT file from a third party service like strava, bike computers, or simply using a GPS tracking app on your phone. Essentially you use a separate device to record your GPS data (as well as heart rate, cycling power, etc...) and then you import that into the DJI Mimo app where it sync's the time data so that the overlays are reflecting the real time data in the video. 2.) Your overheating experience was with the GoPro 360 camera as you mentioned. I was talking about the cameras in this video specifically. If the GoPro 13, Insta360 Ace Pro, or DJI Action 5 get any sort of airflow... even a slight breeze it's enough to cool them and allow them to continue to run without overheating.
This was before the high bitrate firmware. To be honest though the image looks the same in high bitrate. There's some slight differences in fast moving scenery but that's about it.
I'm still using my old GoPro Hero 7 Black. The battery life sucks and the image quality is only acceptable in bright light. I think it's time to upgrade to the Action 5 Pro!

@@Diggin4LifeMetalDetecting I think if he sends the camera back after testing (I don't know if that is the case), then it can be considered non-sponsored.
@@ChaseTheSummit But if they don't like your review and decide to not send you a DJI Action 6 to do a Day 1 review, would that affect you paying your bills?
5 pro.. sure buy it 😊
What an upgrade! Feels like you're paying extra $50 for the built-in memory.
Great review. I love that gopro has an alternate firmware for bigger file sizes so they don't split. Anyone know if osmo added this?
Good review. Is it possible to have the front screen completely blank when recording? Without the recording timer.
it's so clear the OA5 Pro is the winner but waiting for the Ace Pro 2. but the color is better the ACE PRO. the OA5 Pro is orange. 😅
The four hours claim has a footnote on the website - at 1080p/30.
Information I wish I had before launch day lol. I would imagine in 1080P it would hit those numbers.
I shoot in 1080p all the time. I'd render 4K into 1080 anyway.
Potato Jet got 200 minutes w/ 4k in 4x3
Potato Jet git 203 minutes (over 3.5h) at 4K in 4:3 with two DJI Mic 2s connected, AND he connected to the camera several times in that period via DJI Mimo over wifi so that couldn't have helped. Seems like the camera is very efficient.
@@FilipRadelic ...with or without stabilization?
Thanks for the review. I have a veery old action camera, Gopro hero3+ I was considering to buy the hero 13 black but in the end I just ordered the Dji action5 pro, hope I won’t regret buying it :)
I wait the ace pro 2
I’ll be interested in the comparison in low light with the Ace Pro 2 when it comes out. Totally agree, though, that the GoPro in good light looks better and definitely more cinematic. Could ND filters on the Osmo equal some of that out?
Imo, GO Pro does best in super well light daylight, Ace Pro takes the cake in low light. And DJI is probably most reliable out of the 3
Wonderful review and fair comparison.
Great review ! I purchased the first Action1, i dont use it that often as i would like i guess the Action 5 would be a huge leap ?
Would recommend to test action cameras in action filming setting (50/60 fps and higher), in which they suppose to be used. Even thou you "only" runing or hiking. It is still action (at least some sort of it).
Thanks for the comprehensive review!
Love the video Dave! Can you do another video going more into the garmin overlays / data overlays? maybe a comparison to insta 360?
Nicely done. I ordered an Action 5 on day one.
Excellent comparison. Let's hope Gopro updates the sensor to compete in low light.
Just put my order in on that action 5 . Great upgrade from GP Hero 5 blk. Reason why I don’t buy cameras every yr.
Great video, exactly the detail I needed, thanks bro
Aw snap can’t wait for a comparison with the Ace Pro 2
Great review again! I don't see the point in the OLED display being colour accurate in case of an action camera. You cannot do much about the colours when you shoot. You just frame the shot and go. Visibility is another thing.
The main advantage to the OLED is the viewing angles, brightness, and contrast. It makes it easier to use and I guess color accuracy can be useful if you're messing with the white balance in the settings. But yeah, not 100% necessary just a perk.
That was good explanation, really helpful!
I think I'm gonna buy dji action 5
Loved the video! Great comparison of the cameras
That low light test is awesome for the Action 5 pro
might have to make this my new head camera, one question though, can the recording timer be turned off in the settings?
Thanks for the review!
Does the Action 5 require Wifi, Bluetooth, and Location to be turned on in order to use the camera?
Wowwww night mode fantastic and no over heat amazing
Good stuff bro!!
I just bought my dji action 5 my first action camera
Haha! That piece of "low light" performance delivers! And that ultrawide lens bended images, from center to edges.. Hey DJI, go for Leica! 😊
Great review! Thank you.
Did you update your ace pro there's a latest firmware update better night time footage.
wait for the ace pro 2 before making a purchase of anything, hero 13 is out of the question, gopro is now fully behind dji and insta
@@bingbong6127 Don't think Ace Pro 2 would be out by the end of year.
@@AthifKhan Insta is competing with DJI now, they'll release in early to mid October most likely, the camera has already been registered, they release in november last year because they had a last minute issue with lenses that forced them to postpone
9:06 thank you. No one else mention this and for sports people we want overlays
@@ChaseTheSummit Thanks for the info! Yea never going GoPro again.. but think I am sold on the Action 5.
Awesome video. Can you test how much better the battery live is with the new battery in the OA4?
I’ll see what I can do!
Thanks man This video is awesome
Where’s all the shadows on the dji!??? Was this before the high bitrate firmware update? Did you have GoPro set to high bitrate?
This was before the high bitrate firmware. To be honest though the image looks the same in high bitrate. There's some slight differences in fast moving scenery but that's about it.
Thanks for the review, very good. Do you know if the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro connects with the DJI Mic 1? Or just Mic 2?
I believe both are supported.
@@ChaseTheSummit Ah cool, nice one Chase, thank you.
Wow so nice. You had explained features extensively and easy way. Thanks
Dynamic range and color reproduction looks good in GoPro Hero 13.
I'm still using my old GoPro Hero 7 Black. The battery life sucks and the image quality is only acceptable in bright light. I think it's time to upgrade to the Action 5 Pro!
That’s crazy I love GoPro but the 13 didn’t have much improvement & decided to wait to go for DJI action 5 pro! The DJI already has more improvements than the GoPro 13 which is insane lol
Action 5 PRO vs Ace Pro 2 it will be next month. The ball is in Insta's court now. Will it be Ace? Deuce, or OUT!
wow, looking good this action cam!
we need the ace pro 2 review when you get it!!!
dji action 5 pro sound 10 times better than the rest!
great comparison! does it support filters from osmo action 4?
Yep!
thats weird because the price of the Action 5 Pro here is the same as the Action 4 i bought last year lol. gonna pick the Action 5 Pro as a main while the Action 4 becomes the backup.
hero 13 has great dynamic range and color but dji is so good at low light but ace pro is king of low light.
Did you really see the video? low loght of OA5PRO much much better
