excellent. thank you.
At 21:45, Ms. Penneys demonstrates one of the most crucial, yet subtle physical issues that causes tension and prohibits the hand from remaining flexible. Watch as she shows how the hand may “collapse” at the big knuckles when things get difficult. The proper attack should always begin with the “pyramid” shape of the palm/finger mechanism by keeping the big knuckles high and supported. I always tell my students that the collapsed version is the “claw.” It will always work against you. If you keep the knuckles high and keep the hand from collapsing, the natural shape will always assist you in accessing the keys, as long as you focus primarily on the action of the finger as opposed to using anything above those knuckles in playing. I have to say when I saw her do this I actually applauded. I was so happy to see someone mentioning this as an issue with pianists who have trouble with technique, but aren’t quite sure what’s wrong. Thank you, Ms. Penneys! I almost want to visit you and play Op. 111 for you to see how it can be made better… Jeez, she really is fantastic.
Flexibility is key! Thanks for your comment!!
I am thankful to have spent a few years studying with a student of Vengerova and Lhevinne. All of this discussion is wonderful and very practical.
