  • www.homebuildingandrepairs.com Visit our website to learn more about plumbing, home repairs and new house construction. This is a response to a question someone had about using a double wye fitting and not getting enough slope for waste drainage in a wet vent for project #1 and the first video in a series I plan on making for do it yourselfer's, architects, engineers and plumbers who want to learn more about plumbing drain pipe assembly and building codes.
The plumbing codes in most of this video can be found in the Uniform Plumbing Code Book. Others can be found in International Plumbing or Residential Building Code Books and this seems to be creating more issues that I will address in future videos.

The codes are specific that 1/4"/ft must be "in the direction of flow", which is impossible for a flat double wye, which would need 3 directions of flow. Normal fittings in horizontal applications are always in 2 directions of flow. For instance a long sweep 90 is 1/4"/ft downhill towards the drain, but ALSO 1/4"/ft uphill in a perpendicular direction. 2 different vectors. This is part of the reason waste easily crosses over the double wye & clogs when horizontal. They very frequently clog. It's bad plumbing.

Also regarding that chart at 706.3, it does not approve a horizontal double wye.

Do you have a better definition of the direction of flow?

Where does it say you can't use a double wye for horizontal to horizontal?

@@homebuildingandrepairs3122 I'm sorry I don't understand your question about direction of flow. I would think at this level which you're teaching that everyone would be able to plainly understand what that means. I apologize I don't see how it could be ambiguous

@@homebuildingandrepairs3122 The code prohibits horizontal double wyes with the 1/4"/ft requirement and the 'must follow manufacturer's directions' requirement. It says nothing about double wyes in section 706.3 as this video claims
