I am going into 2D animation as a career, and I will strive to make it, even if I have to start a studio myself. In college, it seems difficult to find classes that offer the necessary knowledge and skills to produce it. 3D animation is wonderful; truly, it is a technological marvel, and is superior in terms of consistency and realism. However, the beauty of 2D is that it is malleable and fluid, and I will take it over 3D any day. The problem is, there needs to be a platform for new shows and movies, either through traditional television or some online medium. Too many execs that don't want to take risks.

2D is dead for feature films only in North America. It is still used elsewhere in the world, such as Europe, UK and Japan. It is also used in North America for TV series, commercials, some games, and online.
This is because the industry in North America is ruled by Disney. Where it goes, the others follow.

You do know that there are way smaller, not well known studios that still make movies in 2D, right? Just because the big boys of animation have switched over doesn’t mean that every last trace of 2D animation has been killed off in studios that do movies and not just TV shows or commercials. 3D is probably less popular around the world because many other studios probably don’t have the budget for that and it’s hard to switch over and train your animators in a completely new program and with completely new things and features - especially since the animation standard has gone up tremendously, even in just the last 10 years. North America is the leader of 3D animation because that’s was it was made and used more which is why you’ll see it here more than anywhere else. Besides, not sure how anime characters would look in 3D unless they all looked like Peni Parker lmao.

Ender I agree with your comment, but I think she was more speaking about the way that now there is no longer 2D (with CG) and only 3D (Just CG.) I think it was largely that and the visual difference. CG used to be used in enhancements and in a way that would still look similar to the 2D.

Honestly just on the premise, Up seems more contemporary than The Princes and the Frog, to the context of the early to mid-late XX century it makes a lot of sense, as the princess story is, in general, about archiving a personal goal by bringing everything back to normal, and usually the conclusion of the story explicitly involves acquiring a better condition of material consumption capability (becoming a princess), versus Up, which is a story about coming in terms with death by having an fulfilling a dream. It probably is to be noted that at the end of Up they do also archive the goal of the princess story, but it is presented as a lateral reward.
Also the setting in Up is much more modern.

I wish more people would talk about Sponge Out of Water. It sold itself with the gimmick of the main Spongebob characters transforming from 2D to 3D when they travel above water, but people who were fans of Spongebob did not seem to mind that most of the film is still animated in 2D because the main Spongebob characters spend a bigger portion of Sponge Out of Water in the show's usual settings than they did in The Spongebob Squarepants Movie and later Sponge On the Run, and because the part where they travel above water happens later than you think to have less filler before the main Spongebob Squarepants characters find Burger Beard. I liked how good Sponge Out of Water was at mixing four different styles of animation in the same movie, and remembered to credit all four animation teams. Because of Spongebob, we got to have a majority-2D animated film be one of the highest grossing in the annual Top 10 for one more year.

I’m that kind of person that loves any kinds of animation: 3D CG, 2D Hand Drawn, Stop-Motion, etc.
I do have a preference for 2D Hand Drawn and i do want to see it more in movie theaters, but i love beautiful 3D CG movies as well. In fact, some of my favorite animated movies are in 3D: The Incredibles, Spider-Verse and Ratatouille.
I prefer 2D, but that doesn’t mean that i don’t enjoy 3D. I really dislike the hate that 3D animation gets. Both 2D and 3D have their strengths and weaknesses. 2D can do things that 3D can’t, but 3D can also do things that it’s impossible doing it in 2D.
In my opinion, 2D will never be forgotten and 3D is not overrated. Both mediums deserve respect and should co-exist.

      1. The "premade" asset takes more skill, time, and effort "premake" than just having to draw it.
      2. Lighting is actually harder in 3d
      3. Even though the computer fills in the keyframe transitions, you constantly have to tweak every single transition, because a computer CANNOT animate for you.
      4. What's passable is really dependent on who's watching it. I mean would Pixar start making SFMs just cause a large number of people watch them? NO.
      5. 2d animation takes WAAAY less time to make. Why do you think all the popular animation channels (James, Jaiden, etc) are able to make videos so fast, while Lucas the Spider videos, which are substantially shorter, take more time to make.
      6. 2D animators can get away with being lazy, as they don't have to draw every frame, or animate more than just a character's mouth. 3D on the other hand, even in cartoon-style, cannot do such things, as all characters are CONSTANTLY in motion, and every frame has to be rendered. Which takes even MORE time.

I mean, Princess Mononoke and Totoro are fucking gorgeous, people are so different and facial emotions are amazing, but in most cases like Free or K-ON-the animation is very boring and faces are boring too. Most animes are good for like, boobs and girly boys, also action and gore. It even seems to me that anime are the last animated movies that you would use to learn animation, it seems like they never even use the 12 principles of animation at all, IMHO.

@@pep-o-butt672 they do use the 12 principles of animation. Thats very basic. Its just that the way that those fundamentals are being expressed may be different but, I feel thats obvious. The thing about Japanese animation is that it evolved very differently from American animation, and the practices in place are used to save time on production, since there are many things that can go wrong amd deadlines are hellishly tight. You are right when you say that most TV anime are visually boring, but thats due to the sort of, "moving manga" aesthetic that has been in use since the 60s, mostly for manga adaptations of course. Saying most anime is for boys and have a lot of fanservice is blatantly incorrect and shows that you only really have a surface level knowledge of anime. There are many great animators and shows, movies, shorts, etc out there that you may not know about because they're extremely niche, especially to western audiences, that push animation to its limits. Its just a matter of getting deeper into it. Most modern anime sucks to be perfectly honest. The industry is in a state of stagnation at the moment. There's still good stuff, but its not popular. The best period for japanese animation I would say is the 80s. Also, I find it funny that you mentioned 2 Kyoto animation shows as visually boring, as Kyoto animation shows are generally very high quality animation wise. Their shows much better than most animated shows, even in America

Part of the reason that 3D CGI steamrolled hand drawn animation in the West is that 2D animated characters in feature films, especially human characters were lacking in detail. They had bar teeth, lacked distinctive secondary details like having more than one color on their skin or spots on their shirts, and there was at most, non-integrated shadows on the characters for certain scenes. There was almost no evolution in that regard from 1961 until 1991. The characters got slightly more detailed if you compare Beauty and the Beast to 101 Dalmatians. The Beast is an obvious exception to some of my points. But they're also a fair bit blander too, probably owing to the influence of animators from Filmation and other TV studios. The Soviets did pursue more detailed characters in that time period but did so mostly in short films. If there had been a business model in place for creating short and mid-length animated films then they might have experimented more and applied what they learned to the features. Does anybody else agree or do they think that 3D CG would have taken over anyways?

And maybe I can be an animator in Europe, maybe not Japan though. Or maybe for some video games. Well, who knows? but I hope 2D animation will stay alive. Heck, maybe I might make my own studio when I grow up.

The problem of 2D animation or 3D animation is not the dimension inself, Pixar have a better history and script developement than the Disney 2D animated films, also, 2D animation is cheaper than 3D animation, that is the reason why the Disney TV series still been animated in 2D.

I agree with what Lasseter said at the end. It is not how it looks, it is how it presents itself. If Snoopy with it´s simple and easy animation can be captive and engaging while a messy expensive movie like Titan EA only leaves the audience confused or mixed then it was the problem with story and presentation. Now it is easy to say a lot of 3D movie sucks but that is only becuse there are so many. Remember all the 2D movies that sucked? No? Becuse you focused on the one you loved.

    • @realar
      @realar 6 лет назад +1

Yes but principles don't equal the versatility of hand drawn animation, they are merely a part of it. Extra software is needed to remotely match the look of hand drawn animation but it will NEVER be replicated as easily.

    • @realar
      @realar 6 лет назад +2

Jugem16 No I'm resentful. Because the saturation of the medium took away my dream job in the mainstream. I can no longer be an inbetweener because of stupid convenience. Because they are too lazy to think in three dimensions in 2D. Richard Williams can do it, why can't they? I both am grateful but also hate CG at the same time because it made a new medium and made Pixar but it also ruined the industry and made people think traditional animation is just for kids. I'm utterly sick of it! If I make a film I'm only using pencils or stop motion, thank you very much.

i think the brilliance of toy story was that the toys looked REAL to kids (like myself at the time). i didnt like how the real life characters looked, especially Sid. He looked halfway between real life and inhuman and it freaked me out (altho all the scenes with him were freaky, so even Andy is a better example). but the toys were believable, and that was perfect for computer animation at the time. then with things like the incredibles and finding nemo, they felt better than real life in a way (such as Avatar), or like caricatures of real life that had charm (incredibles).
but gahd, i miss the absolutely captivating beauty of the little mermaid. maybe 2D isn't optimal for some scenes, but the same can be said for 3D. maybe the mix of both like tarzan is best. or anime idol shows using 3D for the dance/song scenes. idk.

Some studios use cgi for the effects in their anime (I mean like sparks or stylized smoke here, not garbage 3d models thrown in) and the results can be absolutely fucking spectacular
Look at your name., any high action shot from Fate/Zero/Stay Night UBW, or something like Ajin. One of the biggest shows this season was entirely 3d animated.
I personally love regular 2d animation but I'm not ever gonna deny the advantages of 3d, I just wish big name western animation studios would take a risk now and again (They can't be that out of cash, right?).

If I ever write my own animated film, I will definitely make sure it uses Traditional animation. I will make it the first Traditional animated film from...Illumination! Illumination! By the way, we still have Traditional animation on TV, so why not bring it back to film? Traditional and CGI were able to coexist before in the 2000s, so why not now? Even Traditional TV shows now still have the digital technology for more detailed backgrounds and shadows, and I still want to see Traditional animation on the big screen again.
I think having no Traditional films anymore caused the CGI TV animation budget to go down the toilet, which is why the Tangled and Big Hero 6 TV shows in 2017 couldn't afford the same CGI as the films when Madagascar and How To Train Your Dragon were CGI animated films whose following TV shows could afford the same CGI animation 5 years before 2017.
Having a not-so-famous voice cast be main characters in my film like Tara Strong or Samuel Vincent or Tom Kenny or Ashleigh Ball who were also in films as characters that they previously voiced in TV shows would also work because people who liked their voices on TV might like their voices in films and I want to learn how to stay in TV budget when making a big-screen film because that's what Nicholas Meyer did in Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan. G ratings and Traditional animation were not a death sentence 2 decades ago, so I need to make sure they still aren't now. The last film that was both of them with new characters (I'm not counting the 2011 Winnie the Pooh since they were in earlier films) was the 2009 The Princess and the Frog. Even though I don't know them very well, I still look up to Nicholas Meyer as a writer and director and Michelle Rodriguez as an actress. Nicholas Meyer because he stays in TV budget when making a TV series film. Michelle Rodriguez because on June 27, 2017, she threatened to quit Fast and Furious because The F8 of the Furious didn't give her and other female stars enough attention. September 26, 2017, 6:44pm

A Defender No, the look of the render is reflective of the technology of the time. How many vertices that can be used to develop a character depends on processing power, and their computers are changed rapidly. It is called planned obsolescence, and it is an evil created by business. Hand drawn animation had only a few changes to the craft in a long stretch of time. CG changes RAPIDLY.

Because anyone who can draw can grab some paper, pencils & paint and crack 2D animation and anyone who knows computers can get Blender or something and make 3D animated movies, mostly for free.
But that Paperman blend was special.

2D was never a dying art form. If you have an amazing story and great characters it doesn't make a difference. Thr technology we have now should support the 2D animation not surpass it. 2D has a beauty, a flow that CGI doesn't have and it comes off way more natural and smooth. And it's more freedom creatively. 2D is always the way to go.
