  • This is a repair video on a Toro Recycler with electric start that just started barely running while cutting the lawn one day. It began revving up and down. This shows how to remove the carburetor and gas tank. Some small trash in the tank and carburetor cleaned that also replaced the rubber seat where the needle allows fuel to flow. Did a reassembly adding fresh fuel that has corrected this Electric Start Toro!

    Great video. Followed this step by step today and my mower started on the first pull after I was done. Thank you for taking the time to make and post this.

    Unlike most gas cans with ‘safety valves’, this one is EASY to operate ruclips.net/user/postUgkx6IImIpPboNrtVJSROnpF9EnyBzRrJKP_ with one hand. Nudge the tab and press the thumb button (all with your thumb) and you’re filling your tank. I bought this to use with a pressure washer that needs frequent refilling and it’s been a blessing compared to most of the ‘safety cans’ being sold. ergonomic and easy to handle.

    You can try just removing and cleaning the carburetor bowl first, before you take off the entire carburetor. I found the bowl and its bolt to be quite dirty after a couple years of disuse. After a good brushing of the accumulated lacquer and cleaning the hole out in the 1/2" retaining bolt, my Toro started right up.

      Really not looking forward to opening it up & repairing...
      Hopefully with your approach, that's all my Toro needs to get going again. 😅

    You just saved me $400! I have same mower. 2 days ago I was using it to chop up/bag leaves. It was working fine, I stopped it to empty the bag. When I restarted, it was revving up and down 4 or 5 times and would die. I checked gas and cleaned air filter, restarted and same thing. I was about to get in my truck to go to Home Depot to buy the Honda push mower (because I have 6" of fallen leaves to deal with). Something told me to check you tube and your video was the 2nd one I saw. I didn't have an overhaul kit, but I did remove and clean the carburetor (It was pretty dirty). Put it back together and it runs great again. Problem now is it's raining (alot). The leaves will have to wait until after Christmas. Thanks much for posting this.

    Nice touch including the socket sizes. Useful. Each year I end up with a couple of used lawn mowers that people have given up on and discarded that are more or less just carb makeover/replacement away from having a full second life. I just got a nice hand me down Toro like this one in your video, and this was a good refresher video for me. Great job on the video. Plenty for me to use on here. I'll save it for future reference.

    Put an inline fuel filter on. It doesn’t take too much dirt to clog up the jet. Most ride on
    mowers have the filter, I am surprised push mowers are not factory equipped with a filter.
    The Honda engines have a filter in the gas line that connects to the tank. It is in the fuel line and you can’t see it. I am surprised Briggs never did that.
    Very nice instructional video by the way!

    • @mountainbikekayak
      @mountainbikekayak  6 лет назад +2

      Hello Al Gorel! Thanks very much , yes agree with you Honda seems to be the only one they have fuel cut offs and a filter. The lawn mower type Kohler engines and Briggs and Stratton do not. Add a inline fuel filter and use non ethanol gas as well certainly would help!

    Nevermind. I figured it out...once I cleaned then off and realized they were different. The shallow one is an S2 square bit and the deeper one is a standard Phillips.

    Your first screw your took off the carburetor is a mixture screw and has holes in it that need to be cleaned thoroughly. it’s the number one problem in most mowers that causes start then stop, or low idle issues.

    be very careful with those autochoke carbs the little piece that holds the vane can snap really easily.... what I have run into with a mower running like this can also be a slightly sheared flywheel key.... get job.

    ... look for the obvious: small holes in a small brass 'jet' at the bottom of the gasoline bowl. The bowl and the jet plug should be physically cleaned and then flushed with solvent. You want any debris removed completely. Then reassemble and use only CLEAN, fresh fuel. A mower is not a car!

    Hi mountainbikekayak. I have the exact lawn mower model with electric start. I'm having the same exact thing happening now. The problem I have is the label for my lawn mower is missing due to mishap while cleaning with a pressure washer. I need to get the carburetor rebuild kit but I don't know the model of the Briggs & Stratton engine. If you could give me the numbers to that engine or the rebuild kit. I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance. AW.

    • @markymark8665

      For Briggs and Stratton, the engine model number is stamped on the engine block. If memory serves its near the muffler but I’m not certain. I had to find mine to order some parts.

    I drained all the fuel and gave my carb a good cleaning an now it's reving way too high....I don't see a throttle adjusting screw on this style carb...where is that??? anyone know ??

    • @mountainbikekayak
      @mountainbikekayak  5 лет назад

      Hello David thanks for viewing! One thing to check is to make sure the linkage is moving freely the butterfly is opening/ and no springs or the linkage are catching up under the cover. There is no screw adjustment on these newer type engines the speed is controlled by that fan on the flywheel which also should be moving freely as well. These carburetors can be bought new aftermarket type ones on Amazon or Ebay for under $12.00 as well. Have bought many of these and they work just fine if that carburetor is just sticking open.

    First of all, many thanks for posting this great video! My Toro had the same symptoms and was able to follow the video to access the carburetor. However, I was concerned about the gaskets needing to be replaced so went to Amazon and found not only the gaskets but the entire carburetor for about $12! The only glitch I ran into was a small spring that I wasn't sure where it came off from and could not locate it in the RUclips. I took a chance and hooked it to where I thought it might go and now the Toro works like new!

      Hello James thanks for viewing! These carburetors you can find new aftermarket ones on Ebay and or Amazon. The last spare I bought was just under $8.00 which is cheaper to replace than getting a rebuilt kit. Have used a number of them and they work just fine.
