    Follow along as Julian Baumgartner of Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration in Chicago works to conserve and restore this icon of Ave Maria. This piece was likely created in a workshop that specialized in religious icons for churches and was the product of several craftspeople and artists with no one claiming ownership or signing the work. These icons appeared commonly throughout Europe and were often lost during war or the closure or relocation of a church.
    This piece came in with very little provenance other than that the original owner was an antiques dealer who traveled extensively throughout Europe in the 50's and 60's collecting pieces for sale back in the USA. This was one that the dealer held on to.
    Covered in years of grime and linseed oil with extensive losses and instability this icon was at high risk for further losses if not complete destruction. The process of conserving and restoring the piece was delicate and tedious but the end result reveals how it might have looked to parishioners when it was first revealed.
    This version of the video contains no narration and showcases just the ambient sounds of the restoration. There is a narrated version here: • The Restoration of Ave...

      There is a show called "Fake or Fortune" which focuses more on the provenance of artworks but usually has a segment with the restoration process. You could also have a look at the channel of the British Museum, they have some detailed restoration videos, too. Look out for anything with Irving Finkel if you are into art history, he is pure comedy gold.

      k a y l e e that would be a yes and it takes a lot to study arts conservator and restoration cause holy damn they have a lot to take in and they have to be good at arts, their hands have to be firm yet gentle and huge amount of petience due to the lengthy restorations plus how old the pieces they will be conserving and what type of piece, some restorers focus on arts or sculptures, furniture or historical artifacts such as Sistine chapel or al hambra, actually the ones I’ve worked with did all but also there are whom focus on certain part of arts, props up to them honestly.

    Absolutely outstanding work, yet again. However, the one thing I wish you would put in the description, its how old the pieces that you work on are. Even an estimated age. “Estimated to have been painted in 1650-1660” etc. As one of the most fascinating thing about watching you work, is seeing the finished product resembling how it once would of looked to those people that lived long ago in a different age. Its almost like time travelling in a way!

    • @dawert2667
      @dawert2667 5 лет назад +206

      Google is only going to be able to provide information for famous and well-documented works. A work like this, with an extremely common title like “Ave Maria,” and one that is also evidently poorly documented, isn’t going to get you any specific answers. This painting seems to have been done in the medieval time period, considering the less realistic, religious content based, and idolistic nature of the piece. Google isn’t omnipotent; the information on the database has to come from someone, so if no one had ever taken the time to document this piece and put it on the internet, google won’t help you.

      Its fresco over wood, so not exactly the most stable of materials. Humidity and temperature can do a lot to degrade them over time, plus candles and incense cover them in soot.
      My dad had a similar one custom made for our family back in Romania in the mid 80s, dont ask how many paychecks it cost lol. The base did break off when we moved to America, despite careful packing. We glued it back on, and some of the fresco has chipped or fallen over the years.

      This is one where the piece only has significant value to the restorer. This is unnamed religious folk art. It looks 19th century Mexican in origin and used as a home altar than put in a barn. I would expect to pay a couple hundred bucks for this at an antique shop in Mexico.

    It's a good detail that the restorer doesn't paint trying to imitate the original painting, it gives elegance to the painting knowing where it has been restored.
