Kim, sometimes people are jerks especially when they make comments. They are communicating through a computer screen but they don’t realize how much negative comments are damaging. You have done so much for Mr. Grant. You have loved him and cared about him. You should be proud of everything you have accomplished. You are an awesome schnauzer mom.

Kim, people who haven't lived through dementia don't understand it. They think the dog should be put down the minute they are diagnosed with this cruel disease. But you said it so well. Even with dementia, Mr Grant still had quality in his life for a long time with your great care, looking out the window and doing his hip hops. He was still there, somehow present inside all of that confusion. But you, who know him so well, understand that the disease progression reaches a point where quality of life is not there.. Kim, this is such a hard decision, but trust your gut, your heart is in the right place. You have done so much for Mr Grant and given him the best life possible. Know that your community is behind you and is holding you close in prayer & thought regardless of your very difficult decision..

Kim, I just wanted to share with you my experience with my last schnauzer. She went through the same dementia as Mr. Grant. She was 15, she would walk small circles until she would lay down exhausted. If I took her outside on a leash, she walked circles in the yard too. She lost control of her bowels and peeing. We started keeping her in our laundry room area, and put down a tarp on the floor because she would poop and continue walking in circles, tracking all through the poop and tracking it on the floor. We would have to bathe her, and then clean up the floor. I did not use diapers - I don't think I knew they existed for dogs. This was in 2015. She was still eating and drinking. I allowed this to go on about 4 months. My husband was an angel, because he was home and I was at work, and he had to deal with the cleaning up a lot. I finally came to the point that I felt she was not having any quality of life, living mostly in a laundry room, and walking in circles constantly until she had to just lay down. It was so hard, but I made the decision to let her go. I have felt guilt, wondering if I should have waited, but I know it was not going to get better. I miss her now, after 9 years she's still part of my heart and will be forever. Kim, do not feel any guilt for whatever decision you have to make. You have given Mr. Grant a wonderful home, and the best care he could get in his senior years. You are definitely a wonderful dog Mom! God Bless you.

My 15 year old schnauzer crossed the rainbow bridge in July. I should have let him go sooner but I selfishly held on.
I found this writing as we were in the end stage of his life.
A day too soon is better than a moment too late. As hard as it is, remember that animals do not think about death nor fear it, they live wholly in the 'now'. He will always be with you and a part of you, so he will never be truly 'gone

This is beautiful 😭 Thank you. Made me feel better about saying goodbye to my soul dog (an amazing schnauzer) over a year ago. As hard as it was, it was the right time. She had oral cancer that could no longer be helped and we did all we could. We never want to say goodbye. I didn’t want her to go not being able to breathe from it and I would have been without a car. One car literally broke down right after we said goodbye. ❤

    Hi Kim,
I’m so sorry to hear about Mr. Grant and dementia. It’s really hard and I empathize with you. Someone else commented that you have done so much for him.
This past year, our 14 year old black schnauzer, Linus, developed dementia. He would go to his water dish and drink large amounts of water, then immediately bark to be let outside. He would come right back in, lie down for about five minutes, then go back over to the water dish and the cycle would begin again. He would repeat this all evening. We started giving him medication, which calmed him down, allowed him to sleep, and broke the cycle for that evening.
Linus gradually got weaker as months passed and eventually he was diagnosed with a liver tumor. Everyone told us we would know when it was the right time to say goodbye.
We really, really miss Linus. He was one of a kind. The pain of losing him was only lessened when I got a card from his old vet saying “you did so much for him”.
It is very hard. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Kim, I’m so sorry Mr. Grant declined like he did and you had to say your goodbyes. I literally made the decision to make the appointment for my 15 yr old sheltie who we believe had a series of strokes. This morning I found her sitting in her own poop and this is a dog who used to never liked to even get her feet wet! Her pacing has gotten worse and she is no longer the same pup even from 5 month ago. IT BREAKS MY HEART! I’m so sorry for you and like many others who commented that they recently went through the same thing I hope we can find comfort knowing we gave our pets love and the best life ever!❤.

Kim, take comfort in knowing that you did so much to make Mr. Grant's life better. Several years ago I had a schnauzer who developed dementia. At the time, I had no idea this could happen with dogs. She behaved like Mr. Grant, wandering aimlessly around the house. She also developed a heart murmur, which eventually made her very weak and finally unable to eat. That was when I had to make that terrible decision that all dog lovers dread. But you are right, quality of life is important and we have the power to make these decisions for our pets. I appreciate that you are willing to share these experiences. As difficult as it is, it can help to put yourself in your pet's place and ask yourself if you would want to continue under those circumstances. You are a lovely person and your schnauzers are lucky to have you. Pat

I can't believe anyone could make negative comments, after seeing how much love you show all the boys every single day. I can hear the heartbreak in your voice just taking about how the end for him is close. Prayers for you and your family that you will be at peace with your decision as to when its time. You are so brave and giving and you look out for Mr Grant and for all of us and our pups. You could have taken the easy road and withheld all of this from us and just told us he passed one day. You could have put Mr Grant down as soon as you got the diagnosis. But you care so much about doing what is RIGHT by Mr Grant and what is helpful to all of us that you are willing to risk trolls and willing to work very hard providing Mr Grant doggie hospice. I never thought Mr Grant would last as long as he has since he was very old when you first rescued him. The people in his life before you would never have even gotten him past that initial cancerous toe. You have put so much love and money into nurturing and nursing Mr Grant and he got to see what it was like to have brothers and a caring human family. What else is there? Now he is incapable of experiencing that reality any longer. Whatever and whenever you decide to help him further, it will be in his best interest. He already doesn’t know where he is, who he is, or who he’s with anymore. I’m so sorry you’re having to deal with this terrible situation. I hope you find a way to find some comfort in knowing you went above and beyond for Mr Grant.. and for all of us. 💕

He knows in his little doggie soul that he is loved beyond measure by his family and all of us who tune in to your videos to watch the escapades of these wonderful little schnauzer boys. May you have peace with the knowledge that Mr. Grant has lived his best life ever basking in your tender love in the safety and security of your home and backyard. He will live forever in your heart and I have no doubt that Mr.Grant will be chasing butterflies across a wide windy field of daisies in a world where pain has no part whatsoever. May love surround you and hold you close.

I saw this after knowing what became of Mr. Grant. You made the right decision as heart breaking as it is. I cried as soon as I saw the end of the video and seeing him circle around. Poor baby. You gave him probably the best few years of his life. You said he was a rescue so I don't know what it was like for him before you got him. He is now at peace over rainbow's bridge. He's gone from your sight but not gone from your heart. You'll see him again in your dreams. I know my beloved little Ben shows up in my dreams. Sympathy and prayers.

It is great that you share your videos of the good times and the bad. We have a senior mini Schnauzer who is 15 now and have noticed significant change in his behaviour and personality. I’m glad you share Mr Grants story I have watched your videos since you brought him home. We have learned so much from you. Our boy was the sweetest affectionate dog and to see the change is hard. All ❤ from us

My schnauzer had doggie dimentia. Everything your saying is what happened with my dog. The clips you showed were very familiar. It was very hard to watch my little guy do that too. The vet mentioned to me when they stop doing five things they always enjoyed doing, which you mentioned too, it's probably getting closer. No matter what it's not an easy decision. You've made a loving home for Mr. Grant and all your pets. 🐶🐾😊🐈

Oh Kim this made me cry. Our girl Megan was just like Me Grant. Walking in circles, peeing in the house, being trapped in furniture. We thought it was because she was blind. Has Mr Grant gone blind? We had our baby put to sleep 2 years ago as we couldn’t bear to see her like this. You will know when the time is right. The vet should advise you as well. We had the vet come to the house as she hated the vets. Your video made me cry 😢. Sending the lots of hugs

Kim, my heart is breaking for you, your family and Mr Grant. My baby did circles at the end as well, after she had two seizures. I just couldn't let her go on like that, it was no quality of life. I KNOW how hard it is to make that decision. I'm sending you strength and love as you navigate through it.

Kim, I'm going to add another comment and it is a hard decision...when the vet called and told me I had to think of her quality of life...I couldn't stop crying I remember that day like it was yesterday. She was everything to Mr. I miss her so much but she had kidney disease, she wasn't eating, drinking slept alot. I Never felt more helpless..if I could've given her one of my kidneys I would've. She was my socialization, she's all I had. So I know your decision will be hard and heartbreaking...Mr Grant has had a good life with you...your a great Schnauzer mom...don't ever forget that and we are all here for you. Is there any medication that would help him with the Dementia? I'm so glad you shared this with us because I didn't even know dogs got Dementia...I sending you and Mr Grant a hug..🙏

My mother had dememtia and it was difficult to see her change. I had a mini dachshund that had it along with other health issues. Got her in 2006 and had to put her to sleep when she was 16. It was so difficult to do. I cried and cried. I loved her so much. My son-inlaw kept telling me I needed to take her in to put her to sleep but I just kept putting it off. I just didn't want to let go of her. When she stopped eating I knew I had no choice. It has been several years and I still miss her. I have 2 mini schnauzers now. I love them but they don't have the personality that she had. They have their own personalities and I love them. It is so hard no matter how our sweet companions leave us. I love Mr. Grant. I feel so sorry that he and you are having to go through this heartbreaking part of life.

Kim, you have been a blessing to Mr. Grant! As you have been to all of the guys! My wife and I have watched you care for the guys hundreds of times. Unfortunately we all have a termination date and our best friends Do as well. We too have lost two great danes over the years and it is hard. In the end when life is nothing more than maintenance of vital signs it is time to rest. May Mr. Grant leave behind fond memories and loving moments.

Thank you for this post on Mr Grant & his med.issues.
I have a 12 yr old mini schnauzer (rescued from a ohio breeder nearly 4 1/2 yrs ago) from the time we adopted
Bella she would not walk out the door for potty time but would walk inside. Never enjoyed being outside nor would Bella ever go for a walk.
In the past year we now carry
    Bella outside & back inside.
She spends all her time on sofa sleeping, doesn't spend time in her crate, would never play will dog toys or ball. Will not jump up nor down on sofa 13:01 (we think she has dimished eye sight). Bella does not seek out her water bowl, we know when she stands up Bella wants water. I always place some water in food bowl ever since our Maggie had bladder stones. We only use
    Distilled water for our furgal's.
    Bella seems to get terribly
Anxious in mornings when it is time to go out or when it is meal time. We've been thinking our gal is going thru doggie dementia this past year. Bella is in good health otherwise, bloodwork is always perfect.
I have 2 mini schnauzers & they take up alot of time during the day. Sending You, family & Mr. Grant well wishes.
