Peyton Manning weighs in on Deshaun Watson & the Cleveland Browns 2024 season

The Cleveland Browns gave up a lot to trade for quarterback Deshaun Watson and they signed him to a massive contract, but a suspension and shoulder issues have kept them from getting much of a return on that investment.
Watson missed 11 games in 2022 because of the suspension, which stemmed from sexual assault allegations that were made after he requested a trade away from the Texans in 2021. Watson didn’t play at all for the Texans that season and he missed 11 more games last year because of right shoulder injuries.
Watson hasn’t looked like the same quarterback he was earlier in his career when he has been on the field for the Browns, but right guard Wyatt Teller doesn’t think that player is gone for good. In an interview with Tyler Dunne of Go Long, Teller said he’s “seen flashes of absolute greatness” from Watson and invoked the name of the league’s top quarterback while discussing what he thinks Watson remains capable of doing on the field.
“I would love to say he has glimpses of Patty Mahomes,” Teller said. “Patty Mahomes is a once-in-a-lifetime guy. I mean, he’s insane. And he has great outlets, he has great receivers, he has a great defense. He has all these different things around him to make him better. But he is the truth. I believe that Deshaun has that. I truly do. I’ve seen glimpses of it. Putting a whole game together, it’s tough. Putting a whole season together, putting a whole stretch together, it’s effinghard, man. I couldn’t imagine taking two years off of football and expecting to play at the same level I was playing at, 2020 and 2021. So he’s the helm of my team. I pray that he has an unbelievable season and honestly plays out of his mind - not to win a Super Bowl, but just for himself. I truly believe that he’s a great leader.”

Bull Bayless says you it's a new year and you can't project defense meanwhile in other segments he's referenced how good the division, or other teams will be based on how a unit performed the previous year.

4300 yards and 35 touchdowns would have put Deshaun at tied for 4th in the league with Josh Allen in yards and the 35 touchdowns would have put him at a close second in the league with Dak who had 36. So Tyvis saying that wouldn’t be some breakout type season for Deshaun or some huge numbers, actually it would be and depending on how well the team did, would probably get him the MVP. So that would be a huge year for Deshaun. Hopefully we see that.
In that division it will probably take that type of year for the Browns to win them the division and put them on the path to a Super Bowl. So there is a ton of pressure on Deshaun to have that type of year. Also the Browns defense put up those numbers playing a 26th ranked schedule. Playing the #1 ranked schedule is going to be a real challenge. Like Bull said, different year and a tougher challenge.
Interesting stats.-Patrick Mahomes- 4183 yards, 27 touchdowns and 14 interceptions last year. By the end of the season though the Chiefs defense was maybe the best in the league. Also Patrick is very clutch. When the Chiefs need it, he delivers and I have to say he is the best leader in the league. He is the whole package.
More interesting stats.- Jared Goff- 4575 yards, 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He killed it and should have been MVP. Lamar Jackson was the 15th ranked quarterback with 3678 yards, 24 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. How in the hell was he the MVP? Kind of proves Tyvis’s ( Sorry if I’m spelling your name wrong, no offense) that you can have underwhelming numbers at quarterback and win. You shouldn’t get the MVP but you can win, if the defense is stellar. After watching the Browns against the Texans in the playoff game, I’d say the Browns defense was overrated. Kind of like Lamar’s MVP!
This is what the negative Einstein's fail to realize about Deshaun. He's never had consistency with the Browns, and that will hurt your performance and I don't care how good you are. If ya don't believe me perhaps you'll believe Peyton? Yeah. Break out year Bishes. Bull doesn't wanna go by the facts. How unusual, no wait, it's not unusual. Gimme a break. Here's another point of view for you to consider: Bull's "role" might be to play Devil's Advocate. Think about it. If everyone sat there and agreed with every point and were "cumbaya" all over the place, would they ever get an audience?? Bull sometimes irritates me and makes me mad, but that might be his job. Keep the fire going and the fans fully engaged. If that's the case, it seems to be working. The show is growing in popularity, isn't it?

I don’t understand how we are OK with Watson just being an average QB, squeaking by, and relying on his defense to win games. That’s not what he was brought to Cleveland for. You don’t pay guaranteed money and give up multiple first round picks for mediocre play. If so, then why aggressively pursue him to begin with? We shouldn’t lower the quarterback’s expectations because the defense is performing.

I’m only here because of the Manning thumbnail. I paused 5 seconds in and I have no intention of watching this video. I didn’t realize it was THIS show. Haven’t watched this show in like 8 months. He had 100 Interceptions and 27 fumbles in his first 5 seasons. Only won 6 games in his 4th season. They stuck with him and Peyton strung out 12 consecutive double digit win seasons.
We make too many excuses for Watson. Flacco comes in and has awesome games week after week. He didn’t need an offseason and 12 games to ramp up, get in sync with his receivers and coaches, and learn the system.

To Tyvis point, look what we did last year... with our defense, with 5 diff QB's, with multiple injuries. And we still got a wildcard game.
The Browns were #13 in points allowed last year. If they didn't have a super fluff non-divion home schedule, it would have been a lot worse. This defense is not elite.

I side with tyvus. Browns fans have to set expectations prior to season.. what would success for team/DW4 be for you? For me if we win 11 games, make playoffs, win at least 1+ playoff games and DW4 is around the 10th best QB = I’m happy. We went from 1-31 to consistent playoff contender with stability at HC & GM, I’ll be proud to tell people I’m a browns fan. Happiness = expectations and people need to stop thinking that unless we dethrone chiefs and go to Super Bowl the world is ending.

They tried to go back to Baker. That is what yall fail to understand. The Browns did their job to try and get a better QB. Watson, no matter who you are at the time, was considered a better QB. When they failed they went back to Baker, but Baker took it personally and wanted out. THAT forced the Browns hand to get a deal done. Baker was never a problem. They are always trying to improve the team. Yall are upset that that includes the QB for some reason. You dont think they will replace Deshaun if they feel he isnt it?
They literally tried to smooth it over with Baker Mayfield, but his attitude didnt let it happen. The literal owner of the team tried to talk to him. A personal one on one meeting with the person who writes his checks. I dont downplay Baker's feelings. But at the same time this is a business and the Browns are trying to win. Baker still isn't considered a superstar QB. They want a superstar QB. No matter what, the Browns made the right decision to try and get better. QB is the NUMBER ONE factor on who wins a super bowl. Why are you as a NFL team satisfied with an above average QB? A fairly good QB with significant flaws. I hate revisionism.
