At least in terms of the animation, it really drives home just how ridiculously talented and driven Takayoshi Sato was. That man single-handedly produced some of the most memorable cutscenes in video game history (which arguably look better than what's shown here), using mid-90s workstations that he was only allowed to use overnight, and had to work solo because otherwise his senior would steal all the credit. True art from adversity, there.
Him working overnight and his seniors stealing his work had nothing to do with each other. The higher ups wanted him to teach the rest of the team how he animated so well, and he told them that he wouldn't do it if they didn't credit him properly. @Tenchigumi
The models look fine. The issue is that they have the barest amount of animation, especially with facial movements. But the models are designed to be realistic so it ends up looking uncanny.
The models are from Metahuman, a native Unreal Engine plugin for character creation. This is the reason people have outfits that don't really look like character designs, and everyone has the same hairstyles. The quality of the models, textures, and shaders is great on its own, it's just out of the box. A week in blender... Come on. That's when people move on from making the donut.
It's okay to enjoy the clusterfuck unironically. Let the garbage wash over you, and feel its freedom from logic or basic storytelling fundamentals carry you away...

I really do think it's the choose-your-own-adventure audience participation element that's holding this back. Like John says, there's talented people working on this, but they literally don't know what story they're writing because they're having to write a dozen different stories. They can't invest into any of the scenes as much as they need to be, because they don't know what scenes are even going to be played. The voice actors are recording hours upon hours of cut dialogue simply because it was part of a scene choice that didn't get picked. If they'd decided to just do a straightforward Silent Hill webseries the overall storytelling and production quality would have undoubtedly been significantly better.
I know, especially in the concluding parts here, a lot of thematic throughlines are actually being solidly followed up on here when they get the chance to happen, (the fear of your children becoming malevolent/something you don’t recognize, losing yourself to your vices, etc.), but you can tell exactly where the audience choices kick in because the plot seemingly has to stop and go constantly to account for arbitrary branching paths that, sometimes, actively ruin the pacing and/or cut a story thread short (the lesbians….) Silent Hill Ascension is simultaneously the best and worst recent Silent Hill entry in the modern era and it’s so dang fascinating if nothing else
I kinda want a version of this where they develop all the alternate paths and release it as a full on CYOA. It might not be *good* but it might be fun.
I think in order for this to have worked at all they needed to have a vast majority of the plan fully written out and mostly scripted and not labeled the chooses as literally "good bad or neutral"
There's a way to make it work but you REALLY need to come up with an airtight lore bible so you can anticipate even some of the most outlandish outcomes. The showrunner might not have had the experience necessary to do so.

Not sure if John ever internalized the fact that the show is broadcasted in 3 scenes of about 1-2 minutes per night, often with cliffhangers to encourage audience voting. A big reason for the series have two protagonists and two settings is so that there can be a break for voting when it switches. The restrictive format lead to a bunch of awkward repetition and weird cuts and transitions when viewed as a 30 minute episode.
I don't know which is worse: the possibility that the breakup was hard-written into the game, the possibility that the breakup was something people voted for (or a few people dumped a bunch of points for votes just to break them up), or the possibility that Olivia is never mentioned again.

Her casting call was listed as "3 to 6", which anybody who's spent ten minutes around children knows is actually a huge difference. She just got written as A Child and as a result is wrong for every possible age of child.

Such events are horrifying anywhere, but their frequency in the USA vs other countries may have been a point of concern in terms of reaction, the portrayal of the long-term impact, or even the story being accused of being political in a way that wouldn’t occur if it was removed from that specific context. Just a theory, potentially off-base, but would be interested in knowing if others have wondered the same or if there’s layers to the USA side of the plot that I’m missing.

They didn't even mention the "Silent Hill phenomenon" so it's not even part of the "new canon"... Eric describing the melting when he does and in the singular does make it sound like he meant Toby, which isn't the case since Toby survived the incident. Okay so the big reason I think this is in fact AI generated is the fact that the half of the plot that revolves around a mass shooting and has people pulling guns out all the time is in Norway. Like a human would have spotted that but the AI was just told to assemble two different Silent Hill plots and put one in Norway, one in America.
To be fair Norway, did have a massive mass shooting around 2011 where 77 people died plus this is rural town and there's still a hunting culture. Arguably Karl may have been convicted for negligence for teaching his kid how to shoot.

@@AceKuper I should clarify, it wasn't after the fact as in after the show was over, it was during the run of the show. The pre/post shows I was referring to happened every weekday at the start, then changed to Mon-Wed-Fri only. It was stated in one of those.
@@kamiamaya As far as i can find it was a throwaway mention on the Day 71 pre-show, according to Ascension wiki. It's still way deep into the show a long while Nils was introduced.

Okay so the big reason I think this is in fact AI generated is the fact that the half of the plot that revolves around a mass shooting and has people pulling guns out all the time is in Norway. Like a human would have spotted that but the AI was just told to assemble two different Silent Hill plots and put one in Norway, one in America.
To be fair Norway, did have a massive mass shooting around 2011 where 77 people died plus this is rural town and there's still a hunting culture. Arguably Karl may have been convicted for negligence for teaching his kid how to shoot.

But then again I audibly gasped with 100% genuine shock and excitement at 10:34 and 19:50 so either they're doing something right or John has brain washed me into caring about the gay subplot because it's the only compelling part of this game

Yeah, but they didn't say it was. Let me sum it up: Eric, Toby, and a bunch of other people worked at the Steel Mill. Toby was the firefighter but when an accident happened he was passed out drunk and couldn't help. Eric and Toby both survived the incident, but a lot of people died. Nora's brother Jeremy also worked there, he died in the fire, but has apparently gotten a couple of letters from him from beyond the grave.

I will have to ask what the deal with this series is, the creative director is a very good friend of mine. He has a good head on his shoulders and is a reliable insight into good storytelling, I expect the train that lead to this mess is a complicated one.
