      Okay 4 had problems but at least it didn't recycle old enemies.
      Okay Origins wasn't great but hey it's the first attempt by anybody who isn't Team Silent.
      Okay Homecoming was pretty terrible but at least the idea of a veteran coming back to Silent Hill is potentially really good, and some of the monsters are neat, if a bit more over the top than usual.
      Okay Downpour has an even more incoherent story and VASTLY worse monster design, but at least it was more ambitious in trying something new and had REALLY cool otherworld transitions.

  • @Broken-Banana
    @Broken-Banana Год назад +11

    Feel free to correct me on this if I’m wrong, but I’ve heard Pat say it a couple times now and I’m pretty sure I’m not. “Pyramid Head” is in fact, the character’s actual name. James initially calls him “red pyramid thing” in the apartments when he’s still not sure what he is, but at the end of the game after learning the truth of everything and acknowledging Pyramid Head and where he came from, you can interact with his body where James will comment, “Pyramid Head won’t move anymore.” Meaning that was his intended name as early as his original debut and the name “red pyramid thing” was more an in-universe placeholder as James doesn’t know his actual name yet. It kind of reminds me of in an rpg when you talk to a character but they haven’t introduced themselves yet, so the game just calls them, “Intelligent looking boy” or something. Unless of course the japanese name is different, I don’t know.

    • @fluidthought42

      Red Pyramid Thing is what the creature is referred to as in the code, and even within other bits of SH2.

    • @Broken-Banana
      @Broken-Banana Год назад +2

      @@fluidthought42 The problem with citing names from the game files is that most of the time they’re made early in development before the story and characters are finalized. A lot of games refer to characters internally by different names for this reason.
      As for what’s in the game, I think he’s given three potential names, Pyramid Head, Red Devil and Red Pyramid Thing. I’m pretty sure Red Pyramid Thing is used the most so I get where the thought comes from, but I never read it as literal, more that he was so mysterious and unknowable that the characters could only describe him by appearance to others. That’s why I personally think Pyramid Head makes the most sense, it’s the only time someone who actually knows what he is addresses him.
      Of course, it’s Silent Hill and everything’s intentionally vague so we can never be 100% sure. Who knows if he was even meant to have a definitive name back then and they just stuck with Pyramid Head after the fact.

    I cant speak for Origins, but PERSONALLY I think the Boogeyman from downpour is the closest we got to a adequate successor to Pyramid Head, I think they did alot of interesting and unique things with him, that would've been better if the game wasn't, y'know...an unreal engine trashfire to play. And Im not opposed to having iterations on "The Trauma Monster" like Woolie said.
    To me its kinda like the "Stalkers" from the resident evil series, Mr. X, Nemesis, Jack Baker, Lady D.
    Its COOL to have this sorta rival character in games, its why people like Vergil, Zero, and Shadow, to have silent hill take that concept and turn it in on itself and make the monster YOUR manifestation is honestly a great design motif, and for a series founded in psychological horror I dont see any better way TO do that kinda thing.

    Every Moonscorched contestant from Fear & Hunger 2 is a better Pyramid Head than any of the off-brand Pyramid Heads from Silent Hill, because even if directly recreating it was not his intention, Miro Haverinen understands the purpose of that kind of monster better than any of the teams who worked on the later Silent Hill games. It is the darkest and most unkind reflection of a character's loathing and self-doubt, manifested in a form based on their understanding of the world around them. James saw a painting of a Civil War-era executioner, and compared it to the role he played in Mary's final days, and the image of that seeks to torment him physically in the way his own self-loathing tortures him mentally. The Moonscorched versions of the contestants similarly evoke themes related to the worst aspects of their human forms: Olivia's wheelchair, and how she feels it inconveniences both her and those around her; O'saa's obsession with knowledge and control; Karin's pride and sense of duty as a reporter. The key is that in order to be effective, the monster needs to be tailor-made to the character it haunts.

    I don't know how these post-Team Silent developers trying to recreate Pyramid Head can expect anything but failure when none of them are trying to solve the specific problem that the Team Silent solved by creating Pyramid Head, which is create a big spooky fucking persecutor who serves the story of James Sunderland (spoilers) specifically by reenacting the source of his guilt over and over again by killing literal escort quest/analogue to his wife, Maria.
    Instead they keep working in this ass-backwards way where they write the main character's backstory so that a Pyramid-Head-copy-paste can exist. Every single game with a Pyramid Head copy (or just literally Pyramid Head again) has a secretly-I-killed-someone main character backstory with incredibly varied levels of making any god damn sense. It turns out, to make good psychological horror you need to actually write solid characters.

  • @alucardx60
    @alucardx60 Год назад +4

    Honestly I don't even believe the scenes are actually prerendered. I think they're done IN ENGINE. What engine? Why? I dunno. But I suspect that's how they get cameo characters in, they're basically create-a-characters in any other game. This may be why the animations are so off sometimes. I once saw in b-roll footage in an interview they did that a character was 45 degrees out of place while closing a door in an otherwise fully rendered scene. I could even go one step further in my speculation that I wouldn't be surprised if they're using AI to assist with either the animation or maybe part of the writing. That's just how off kilter everything is in the worst possible way. Like, scenes where they should have TOTAL CONTROL of the actors still have a bunch of weirdness in how character move and talk.
    We may never get any confirmation on any of this but that's what it feels like watching it. The best form this could've taken was an Until Dawn type game with twitch integration but I don't think they were ever capable of putting in the work that would require.
    Oh, one final note. The way Genvid talks about affecting the "canon" of Silent Hill makes a lot more sense when you realize that all there other projects are based on much looser, comic booky IPs. The Walking Dead previously, and a planned DC comics and Borderlands projects. So they're kinda carrying over language from those over to SH.

    Ironically, if he got a spin off game where he smashed up Silent Hill in a sort of DMC/Bayonetta vein whilst having an existential crisis over the nature of his being, it would probably be more in keeping with the series than either Shadow the Hedgehog or Book of Memories are to their respective franchises.
