    It's shocking to hear that in the UK the wait-list is five years, that's really dangerous. I don't think my trans brother would still have been around if we had that much of a wait-list in my country, I realize now how privileged we are for only having to wait one or two years. Speaking as a parent of a child who rates somewhere between trans and gender fluid (that is his presently preferred description), I really appreciated your understanding of what it means to a sensitive parent to come out to them: "Oh crap, my child's life is going to be harder." Kisses to your mother too!

      I’m don’t want to come across as insensitive. I ask this because I would like to learn and understand. But just gender fluid mean that they don’t identify as either gender? Or is it that they change there gender depending on how feminine or masculine that they feel?
      I hope my question makes sense.
      Also I want to just say you’re amazing for supporting your child, some parents just say oh they will grow out of it ect. ❤️

    • @craftsecond
      @craftsecond 2 года назад +54

      @@Leanne_w In my child's case, he is Assigned Female At Birth (afab) but leans much more male. However, he sometimes prefers to wear a skirt and midriff baring shirt. He presents his gender pronouns as he/they/she, and so we have made the switch to using male pronouns by default. In my child's case, it would probably be more accurate to say he is happy to identity as any gender, but changes his presentation according to how he is feeling.
      I don't think your question sounds insensitive at all; believe me, I've learned a lot and am still learning a lot on the topic! I suspect that the term "gender fluid" can mean a lot of different things to the people who feel it applies to them, so I (especially as a cis-het-male) certainly wouldn't presume to speak for the whole community! I can just answer for my child, who has more than once simply said "Gender is stupid." With a dose of knowing irony.

    • @belenmusic4097
      @belenmusic4097 2 года назад +10

      @@Leanne_w I am not the original commenter but I'm genderfluid I think and if im not im still educated so I can answer! This isn't insensitive btw, questions are much better than being ignorant. A genderfluid person is someone who's gender shifts over time, some days you may feel like a woman, sometimes like a man, sometimes in between, sometimes more than one gender at once and sometimes nothing. It just means your gender is fluid and changes. Sometimes it changes all the time, could be every few hours, and sometimes it changes slowly over weeks or longer. The intensity of the change is also different for everyone. Hope this helps :)

    A wait list of 5 years?! Holy crap! That’s way too long. This is a serious issue. For many people, transitioning will save their life.
    Edit: I so appreciate how understanding and loving your family seems. The concern for lea’s mental health and the understanding that she needed these surgeries done for her health - as well as the effort put in to help her get there - is so wonderful and helps restore my faith in humanity.

      There’s huge wait times for a lot of things, it took over 2 years just to get an autism diagnosis for me, my parents ended up buying a private session and I got my diagnosis that day!! A while later the NHS gave us the diagnosis, but it took so long and would have been so much more helpful to have it sooner!!
      I dread for the time I could potentially get top/bottom surgery, it would take so long.

      UK has a major issue with wait times. I am in end stage kidney failure and cannot get treatment for my mental health for over 2 years as the waiting times are massive.

      At least they have healthcare, in the US you wouldn’t get shit. Just a bunch of idiots saying “we don’t want to pay for that, it’s your responsibility if you have health problems!”. I honestly am not sure how the US can be labeled as a country, it doesn’t do anything to take care of its citizens and the police legally do not have to help you, so essentially they are just legal thugs for the government. When school shooting happen every other week People cling to guns for “protection “ even though the high access to guns (especially semi automatics) is what allows school shooting to exist in the first place. Plus now we women have even less rights than we did 50 years ago. I fucking hate my country, but I can’t leave because I can’t afford to move. I wish there was a way that I could be fucking deported so that I could fucking leave this shithole.

While there are plenty of things that are problems in legal and physical care of trans people in the United States, the community is strong and the educated are overall excepting. I hope that no one has to go through the things that we have gone through and I hope that we can improve the world around us. Thanks for sharing. I fortunately have a very positive and excepting experience but not everyone does and it further solidifies the need for change. Hope you are feeling happy. Ahhh she looks so beautiful!!! I can also relate to the notion of a personality change once you come out. Much of it is because we've spent so long fighting ourselves that once we stop we are happier and it exudes. Definitely going to watch the surgery videos (I'm a Healthcare worker) sorry not sorry

      I relate to this so damn hard and I also live in a country with good health care that is actually more accessible than the NHS but barely helpful for binary trans people and absolutely ridiculous for nonbinary people like me.
      I could only get shit paid by insurance if I fought everyone for years.

    I love how you both explained your mom's reaction. That's exactly how I felt when my teenager started questioning their gender identity. I don't care and I love them no matter what. But my very first thought was how much more difficult and complicated their life is going to be. Especially in the country where I live and in our culture and our family, people are very "traditional" and "conservative" and half of my family is very transphobic and homophobic. It breaks my heart to know that my child has to go up against that.

    Being non binary myself, the way she talks about how she realised she was trans, and how she thought of hiding it hit quite deep, because for the past few years I was thinking exactly that, "oh, I'll just pretend everything is normal, and none of this is real" but it does not go away. Just recently I was like, I do have to tell people, and even though I am starting to talk about it to some friends and people who are also either lgbt themselves or very very accepting, where I live being trans and non binary really is very dangerous (it's never easy, but living in Latin America makes it so that most people won't be accepting, and unaliving trans people is quite common even). It's very scary, and I am just proud and happy for Leah, that she can have the surgeries she needs to feel more comfortable.

    Obviously not the same thing but I've in the last few years come out to everyone as bi. That whole "do I want to be with her or be her" was exactly what helped me realise I was bi. There were a few times I asked myself the same question and knowing other people question the same thing I had such a wave of relief that I can't even explain

    23:56 Absolutely. I think a lot of trans people at the moment are being pressured into surgery so that they ‘pass’ and it just isn’t right. You are valid as you are, you are valid as how you want to be. If you want surgery, that’s amazing and all the best! If not, also amazing and all the best! You are no less your preferred gender just because you do or don’t want certain surgeries :) I know I’m a couple months late but I hope Leah is continuing to heal well!

    Sadly the wait list times are mostly due to a large increase in many young people recently who believe they are trans. It's okay to be trans but it's also okay to be a more feminine male or a more masculine female.

    • @Ellbat
      @Ellbat  2 года назад +2

      The waitlists have always been this horrendous unfortunately, it’s largely due to understaffing. It’s the same for mental health services, it’s just incredibly understaffed.
      I’m not sure what being a more feminine man or masculine woman has to do with being trans? Gender presentation doesn’t equal gender identity :)

    • @julesdj913
      @julesdj913 2 года назад +1

      @@EllbatThank you for the reply. I agree that understaffing is an issue. There are also record numbers of people that are now detransitioning because they thought they were trans at a young age and later discovered that they weren't. That's why I said it contributed to longer wait times given you have more people seeking treatment for gender dysphoria than you did in past decades. Sometimes these individuals later discover it was other issues in their lives that needed treatment. This may have been because they didn't see themselves represented in how people were expressing their gender, given their biological sex.

    being trans it's so incredible to see things like this. I'm a trans man and good god do trans women have so much bravery, y'all got the more invasive surgeries and switching to the more generally oppressed section of the population, it just makes me really hopeful that i can do it too. Leah you look so beautiful, before and after.

    Being non binary afab, I too burried it. I remember choosing my favourite colour as purple and asking for things like my little pony and barbies and stuff so I could be "good" and play the feminine role I thought I was supposed to. Also probably autistic and did the same for masking. It took me about 20 years to actually tell my family, and around 15 to find the words. I wish I was able to be out earlier, still working on pronouns from the family.
