  • How does a semi-automatic pistol eject empty cases?
The extractor grabs the rim of the cartridge when the catridge is chambered. When the pistol is fired, the extractor moves rearwards with the slide and pulls the empty case out of the chamber.
On the opposite side is the ejector, which is mounted on the frame of the pistol. It stops the movement of the case and the case is pushed through a side opening of the slide called ejection port.

So essentially it's a hook and a punch utilizing the recoil force to eject the casing? No spring or other extra force to eject it.
