"Forward assist" you mean the sniper button, if you hold it down it makes your rifle shoot more accurately. My favorite story that comes from the war in the middle east.
There's a theory to that. With the thumb removed from the grip, it may let the rifle recoil straighter back or some shit as the barrel axis wants to deflect off of the resistance of your shooting hand... especially if your stance is loose and goofy. Gotta imagine whoever thought that term up.
uhhhhhhhh, I may be new here, buuuuut, if you depress the forward assist while initiating the fire sequence and the bolt carrier group travels rearward, you induce a malfunction. A short stroke would be more like a "single shot" sniper rifle.

Not enough credit is given to the English “pre AR15” designs which included, straight stock, smaller caliber, locking bolt, gas operated. The English gave up on the development on US insistence for 7.62 x 51 as the NATO standard. But, give him his due, Stoner saw the potential and was a design genius.
It took an "AK Guy" to finally explain to me how the friggin' gas rings come into play on this gun. Never understood that. Never knew there was a port through the gas key. Thanks Brandon. These WBOK videos are great.
@@dbmail545 What are you talking about? Being able to own the gun doesn't bestow knowledge on a person. I can own a car. I know dick-all about how most of it actually works.
The AR was completely perfect, in every way, until they stopped using gun cotton (which had zero residue in the receiver) to ball powder (which gunks things up) and thus... Is the very reason Eugene stoner didn't want to sign off on the military version of the m platform.
When you consider that the military was coming from bolt guns, and the M1 Garand, it makes sense though. With either of those, if the round jams, you slap the bolt and ram it into battery and keep going. Originally the AR didn't have any way to force home a round that wouldn't go, but the military made Stoner put the malfunction exacerbator on the AR 15.
@@kuuryotwo5153 actually, no. SOP was to check to see if a round was chambered before action. With a non-reciprocating charging handle, some West Point graduate thought this would be useful. It is, despite being the source of so many other problems.
@@DD-hz3ts the attached charging handle can open and close a bolt... so you are halfway there on fixing problems. All the forward assist can do is force home problems
@@kuuryotwo5153 I get where you come from, but in that case they could have opted for an upper receiver with a side mounted charging handle or an AR-10 style charging handle. The forward assist is only there to ram it home which you don't want to do when your round won't chamber.

My uncle told me once that in Vietnam doing recon in the jungle the forward assist let you chamber a round without making a lot of noise. I don’t know how many times that was done if ever but that is what his team leader instructed the team when he was a green FNG.
To be fair, bolt handle, forward assist, you don't want to force the round in. Also that thumb sized cutout in the bolt carrier is also a forward assist.
That is military bureaucracy for you - AR-15 was never supposed to have or need the forward assist anyway, but Army specifically demanded it. Watch the Forgotten Weapons video for more detail.

i loved your COD ak video, id love to see more video game gun breakdowns or history. one thing i found interesting when i went back to play ps1 and ps2 games is there was a trend of certain weapons like tec9s and ingrams and SPASs, its pretty obvious how much it was connected to 80s guns used in movies for the longest time until the original CS really
Just want to note. During my years in the Marine Infantry, I never had one failure of any kind from my M16A2. I was issued one in bootcamp, weapons training, and fleet. None of them failed to fire at any time. I did have my M249SAW fail one time. Anytime I hear of anyone having a failure, it's because they were not cleaning it after every exercise or they were playing with it or adding performance accessories.
The m16a1 we had 77 81 were totally unreliable they fudged the numbers to prove which units were the best. Maybe the twenty round magazines were the problem so when I got out can you say mini 14
I once had a former armorer explain it to me like this: An AR rifle (M16 M4 whatever) is great for a military with a quartermaster and armorer to take care of the weapons for the soldiers and is an excellent battle rifle The AK pattern is simply put an indestructible block of metal that makes smaller chunks of metal go very fast which makes it ideal for militia forces or units that receive minimal training or support. Which complies well with Soviet doctrine. While on a deployment he said that he witnessed an Iraqi soldier taking an old sock in used motor oil and ran it through the barrel and chamber. He called it good enough and went on patrol.
Yes. Honestly, calling the AR "technically a piston gun" is just arguing semantics to try to either sound smarter than others, or trying to lie to yourself that the AR doesn't jam as often as it does compared to true piston guns. (Inb4 someone posts the InRange video of the AR surviving the mud test while the AKM fails - I already show it to AK simps who think it's objectively better).

Forward assist worked out great for Kyle!
Ian's title of the forward assist video described it perfectly: "A Solution Looking For A Problem."
Guess we gotta throw the G36, AUG, HK433, and every recip CH rifle in the trash too then
@@DD-hz3ts the attached charging handle can open and close a bolt... so you are halfway there on fixing problems.

None of them failed to fire at any time. I did have my M249SAW fail one time. Anytime I hear of anyone having a failure, it's because they were not cleaning it after every exercise or they were playing with it or adding performance accessories.

I once had a former armorer explain it to me like this:
An AR rifle (M16 M4 whatever) is great for a military with a quartermaster and armorer to take care of the weapons for the soldiers and is an excellent battle rifle
The AK pattern is simply put an indestructible block of metal that makes smaller chunks of metal go very fast which makes it ideal for militia forces or units that receive minimal training or support. Which complies well with Soviet doctrine. While on a deployment he said that he witnessed an Iraqi soldier taking an old sock in used motor oil and ran it through the barrel and chamber. He called it good enough and went on patrol.
Its an impulse "inside" the carrier "inside" the reciever...
Doesnt that make it Direct Impingement Impingement?
Redundancy being the point of a strong point.........🧐🤔🤔🤔

Also I could see that the forward assist could come in handy in a dirtier environment such as where we were fighting at the time because if the gun gets dirty it might not cycle all the way and the forward assist can help it finish the stroke. Not needed in most applications though, that's why a lot of newer designs dropped it
