Wow, underrated channel. Great quality, no BS, no cheesy nonsense like so many other channels, fantastic photos and samples. I'm researching this lens to shoot my own shortfilm in September, and looks like I'm going to buy it after watching a whole bunch of reviews.
i need to add another comment cause i think its a very important point: this lens never has failed me even in close focus situations, i.e shooting wedding rings BUT i mostly shoot manual in these situations BECAUSE it focuses even closer in manual than with AF !
You are the best reviewer on youtube. I've seen a lot of people making videos about portrait lenses and photographing the model very close to bushes, very close to walls, etc.If you don't leave that space, there is no difference between the lenses, between them, or between them and a phone. It does not leave a distance in which to really see the capabilities of the lens to make bokeh. They are very pleasant RUclipsrs, but you don't understand much from their videos, you don't know the lens after watching. Every time I'm interested in something, I write what I'm interested in, and at the end I write your name. Always the same high quality of tests, specifications, etc. You are very good.
Whenever I'm considering a photography purchase I come here first, Pav. Your videos are always very honest and informative, plus I just enjoy your energy. Thanks for another great video on a compelling little lens.
I own this, brilliant little lens & with hardly any competition. This or its sister the 55mm f/1.8 always find a space in my travel bag, for indoor & night photography.
I own this lens, it's a gem. I'm often surprised by the image quality. I use a Pro-mist or Glimmer Glass on some of my lenses, but his lens produces such nice images with no filter.
I agree. 24mm f1.8, 28mm f1.8, 35mm f1.8, and 50mm f1.8 with AF/MF switches and declickable aperture rings would be awesome. They just need to update some existing models a bit.
i can't complain about this lens, amazing for photo and video, this is what i use on my a7IV in 4k60fps cropped in basically to 50mm FOV - i wish there was a real 50mm equivalent of this lens in sonys line up - lets say with the 2.5G primes build. Took some of my most favorite wedding pictures with this lens thoug i also shoot 50mm and 85mm. Always great to see how -enough- 1.8 is if you nail composition ;-) I also take a lot of boudoir video and portraits with it and recently it got pretty wet on a shower-shoot - no issues at all.
Excellent video! Loved all your shots and the high quality of the video. Watched a lot of videos on this lens before this, but your video seems to be the clincher. Will most probably go for this lens. Thank you so much! :)
Great video, really well presented! I'm curious what lens you were using while walking in the trees and talking @2:40. That lens has neat character, sort of smeared bokeh!
Great video as always Pav. Btw sigma 35mm 1.4 vs Sony 35mm 1.8 which one would be more reasonable for hybrid shooters? Or Samyang 35mm 1.4 II? Thank you
Thanks for this question Eric. I also have the same confusions. 😊 Planning to buy a 35mm lens for portrait. Sony 35mm f1.4 G Master is too costly for me.
I had the 35mm f1.8 for a couple of months but felt the images were not 'punchy' enough. I sold that and bought the F1.4 GM and was immediately blown away by the IQ and creamy bokeh. Overall i think the F1.8 is pretty good for the price but the GM is in another league of its own.
I don´t have the Sony 35mm 1.8, but I do like the 35mm focal length, so I have the much smaller and lighter Sony Carl Zeiss Sonnar 35mm 2.8 ZA, I also have the excellent Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical which have outstanding optical image quality and is built like a tank.
I really like your videos, they show the analysis in a practical way and they are beautiful. It is a pleasure to watch them. About the 35mm f/1.8 I was thinking about buying it, among other reasons, because of the reviews about its excellent focus, but with your video I was in doubt. From your experience, could you indicate which autofocus lenses you prefer or find most accurate (at any focal length). 3:15
thank you very much! The AF issues I have experienced with this lens are not common. Pretty much every DG DN Sigma is better. GM lenses too but they are seriously much more expensive. As I said in my video - it's not a problem. You just learn to deal with it and over come it in the real world
the AF is great on this lens! Shooting it since 2020 for weddings and portraits - i can ensure you i've had no issues at all and i've never missed a shot with it even in critical situations on weddings - (in contrast to the sony 85mm 1.8 which missed quite often when i wasn't as skilled)
Hi Pav, I always enjoy your videos! I own this 35 f1.8 lens and enjoy it but I am wondering if i would see a noticeable "real world" bump in photo quality if I 'upgraded' to a (used-, so slightly cheaper than full price) 35f1.4GM. Would it be worth the upgrade, in your opinion? From my research a lot photographers are a bit 'on the fence' between these two Sonys , the 351.8 and the 35GM. Thank you, Pav.
I think GM lens will always be better overall but you are right the differences will be very small. Possibly faster AF, if you are shooting fast moving objects and maybe less chromatic aberration. You also get a bigger and heavier lens with manual aperture control. This is a solid alternative. I personally do not use 35mm enough to justify GM lens. I also like shooting with 35mm from a gimbal, this one ticks all the boxes for me
@@PavSZ Thanks so much for your reply Pav and for talking me out of my G.A.S. moment, ha,ha. You have confirmed my inner thoughts that I would be buying a new lens just to have that GM label but not really gaining much more except lens weight in my camera bag and bit more bokeh over my 35 f1.8. I do appreciate your objectivity.
Hi , I bought a new 35mm FE but I noticed that when my Sonya74 is turned on it emits a slight but persistent noise (I tried to put on another lens but the noise isn't there) so could it be linked to the optics? Do you recommend I get it changed?
I didn't see this post, I also posted a question about samyang. I'm torn between this lens and the samyang v-af 35mm f1.8 cine lens for both photos and videos. The samyang may come with an animorphic adapter that you can purchase in the near future?
image quality it is. It can produce very cinematic looking footage for sure. Samynag is however dedicated cinema lens with T stop and matching to other lenses in the set optical quality
Samyang is a cine lens. It does decent photos, it has got tally lamp and electronic front element accessory connection. However it suffers from focus breathing. This is a primary photo lens, small, simple and it has got zero focus breathing. Only you can decide which one is right for you.
Pav, in the past couple of days, I've watching your reviews back and forth, bcoz I have a purchasing decision to make. I'm a Canon FF DSLR shooter and now want to upgrade to mirrorless for the purpose wedding and travel videography+photography, Primarily I need a camera and a 35mm lens, but I have plans to buy a 85mm and a 20/24mm. I'm undecided between 2 choices... the Sony a7iv and the lumix S5iix with their respective 35mm 1.8 lenses. Like you, I've only heard good things about Sony 35 1.8 from everyone. You've handled both and I've just came across your review of Lumix s 35 1.8. If I have to make the decision of choosing one system over another solely on the performance of the 35mm 1.8, which one should I buy? I'm aware of the prices, strength and weaknesses of both a7iv and s5iix. Thank you for reading this long comment. Looking forward to your opinion.
thank you for watching my videos. You summarised your question well at the end. A7IV and s5IIx have different traits and qualities. You can't just judge the whole system by one lens. I think both of these lenses are very similar optically with Lumix being a touch sharper overall, but that would only be visible if you compared images taken with both side by side. You get also more from Lumix camera when it comes to video.
@@PavSZ Haha, sure! I just meant that I had this lens and was impressed by it, but did not like the focal length. I wish there was an offering for a 28mm prime lens with these qualities. There are a dozen of 35 mm options available for Sony E mount, but no reasonable options in 28mm. Why is that? Am I the only one to favor 28mm? But wait: Viltrox to the rescue ...
Did you find the contrast a bit low between f1.8 and f2.5 on this lens? That's the biggest weakness on this lens. I have the Sony G 40mm f2.5, which is sharp and contrasty from wide open. It offers a punch that this 35 mm lacks. I have decided to keep the 40 instead of this 35.
This lens ought to be $450 not $750. Still tempting because this video provides sufficient evidence beyond a doubt that it can make incredible images and video.
I think about it the other way. 50mm is my go to focal length for everything and then when the space is limited and I want to get more in the frame, I reach out for 35
blurry? you mean you don't like shallow depth of field. In that case you should use any kit zoom lens and save yourself money. Zoom also be more versatile than a prime
Considering this lens for webcam use in an aps-c camera (zv-e10). I usually shoot with a Pentax K3 (also aps-c) and I consider the 35mm LTD as my "normal" lens - the equivalent of a 50mm on a FF camera so a 35mm is always my first recommendation for a first prime - and once you go primes then your world suddenly opens up, as does your wallet! 😢
Lightness and portability score high for me. No aperture ring is a bummer. I’m wondering how the Sigma 35mm f2 compares. We know the Sony has CA but it seems to be manageable and not so relevant in B&W. I’m also not shooting video.
For someone who doesn’t like 35mm, you really utilize that focal length very well. I love the sample shots.
Thank you very much!
I'm getting used to 35mm slowly
35mm is so hard to use
