One of the best alternate history animated maps I have ever seen. my only critique is I doubt that the eastern Romans could get a colony in the new world, besides that nit pick I'd say everything made sense!
Here is a fun fact being Japan almost became Christian in the 1600s when there was a Christian Samurai rebellion because of the harsh taxes that cannot be paid by the people so in turn many began converting to Christianity and rebelled against the Japanese Shogun.
I'll focus on this one single part in particular and it's that Rhomania only begins to support Syria and Yemen in their civil wars in the year 2014. I believe that in this timeline, Rhomania would've had more of an iron hand in the Middle East region, they would've had a powerful political and economic influence in the region that when something bad happens, Rhomania would've been quick to intervene and sent their soldiers in. Do note also that they're a former colonial power that only recently decolonized in the mid 1950s, they've got that juicy industrial base from all that, they can easily be able to have a more aggressive foreign policy than the Turks of our own timeline, and they're not just gonna let their colonial influence in the region slip from their thumb
I see your point there and I gotta say you are right. Im having some plans to rework the modern period after the Napoleonic Wars but im not certain I'll do it
This was very interesting, I’m surprised however that the Greeks/Romans didn’t relocate rebelling populations, such as the Bulgarians and Serbs, north of the Danube, in real life population relocation was a very common and used tactic by the Byzantines, I’m surprised it wasn’t used at all
great video! however, there's a few things i would change; 3:51 I think that the mongol invasions wouldve happened earlier because the mongols were already present in the area and even if they didnt try tro invade the empire, ogedei had already an invasion of europe planned since 1234. Then the invasion would probably end in 1241 with his death and nothing much would happen afterwards as the mongol empire wasnt that strong after that. 7:27 With the collapse of the Ilkhanate in 1335, the Byzantines would probably have organized an invasion of persia as soon as they possibly could. 8:35 As teh Serbian Empire collapsed in 1371, I think the Byzantines would have invaded it right away. 13:26 Since the Safavids started rising in 1501 and were strong enough to take out all of their local enemies in under 20 years, and the byzantine empire was in civil war and would later be invaded by multiple european powers, the fact the safavids weren't even mentioned is kind of concerning. 15:39 You were way too generous in my opinion with how easily the byzantines defeated the hungarians. I dont think they could have won 2 wars one after the other like that, and once again, I don't get how the Safavids didn't try an invasion. Also, the byzantines were given land that isn't even hungarian so I think other parties would be involved in this war. 16:17 How could the byzantines sustain a colony in venezuela for so long even though in 1579, the area around venezuela had already been occupied by the spanish? 17:14 I dont think its realistic that the safavids could be distracted fighting in their eastern border as them and the Mughal Empire (dominant empire in india at this time) were in good terms + the natural boundaries of the empire would have likely repelled a big invasion like it happened. 21:26 The byzantines cold probably notve invaded sicily like that, austria would definetly be a larger threat as theyve shown us in our timeline during the great turkish war. 22:08 Same thing, also the rise of the Hotaks is just completely ignored. 23:46 The revolutionary events happened way to early 24:15 Napoleon didn't land in egypt? 25:46 I'm surprised that during the 1848 revolutions didn't spread onto the balkans, egypt or anatolia, as from what you've showed me, I thought that they didn't have the best treatment inside the empire. 26:55 Why didn"t the empire grab a seat in the Berlin Conference (strugle for africa)? 27:31 How did the russian revolution happen like that if Russia was winning the war?
Okay so im actually gonna need this for my remastered video because you actually spotted a lot of things that actually don't make sense 😆 The only one I can explain is that the Russians in WW1 weren't really winning, its sorta like OTL here, and the poor living conditions led to the Revolution. Although thank you for the rest as I'll need to pay attention to those in my video
This is the alternative history that I wish for it to be reality. Imagine a world where the United States and the Eastern Roman Empire co-exist. The only difference is that there would be no Turkey and maybe a few other regional differences.
I have an Idea for the perfect image of Hellas. Athens: The Capital Byzantium: Europe's Largest City Izmir: The Center of Greco-Turkish Relations Cyprus and Crete: The symbols of Resistance
I feel like by the time it is 1500 they would have taken creynica, egypt, levant and expanded even futher to Africa , Mauritania and mesopotamia by 1600 and should focus on colonizing all of The Raj and pacific islands and then take phillipines and then buy alaska from the russians and try conquering canada from british empire
This is what Greece should have been like but the lands which I think Greece should have been if we are to be a bit more humble, then I think all the lands of Western Anatolia with Attaleia in the south some miles east of that a vertical line the whole way up to the black sea And on the European side all the lands from central Balkan Mountains and downwards as a great natural barrier and a pretty straight horizontal line from the central Balkan mountains the whole way to Epidamnos on the Nova Epirote coast. All these lands are much of the essence of Greece and I think those are the lands that Greece today should have had.
I think its chances were lost after the battle of Myriokephalon (which was the point of divergence in the video) and after 1204. Manzikert was the beginning of the fall of Byzantine Anatolia, but it could have been reversed during the 12th century
Alr dude great quality but there is seriously no way the same things like Bolshevikism, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Austria Hungary, and all that jazz would still happen. Even if Rhomania remained isolated, the butterfly effect is enough to change everything.
9:45 Although I am a big fan of Byzantium, I strongly doubt that they could defeat Tamerlane. In my imagination, the best that could come out is a more difficult battle at Ankara, where Tamerlane wins but suffers significant losses, after which he reaches Ionia and Bithynia, realizing that with his remaining strength and undermined health he cannot take coastal fortresses, after which he concludes a favorable peace with the Greeks.
@@ponticgreekmapper1335 Thank you for making this video! I can point in some more places, but, to be fair, I like what you are created. Just try to make it a little more brilliant.

So I have a few questions 1. is the fake "North macedonia" not around in this timeline? 2. Who is Byzantium top 3 best allies and top 3 worst enemies 3. Lets say somehow Britain still gets their filthy hands on the parthenon marbles, how would byzantium go about it 4. What's is their global firepower ranking exactly? 5. And lastly would the Golden dawn (Χρυσή αυγή) still be around?
1. Nope, as you can see in the map the region is part of Byzantium 2. Hmm, good allies of Byzantium are Egypt, Kurdistan and Armenia. Serbia is also a good ally. Israel, Iran and Azerbaijan are its worst enemies 3. They don't get their hands on it, but even if they did Byzantium would put much more focus on retaking them 4. As mentioned in NATO they are the second strongest military power. Globally I would say maybe 5th-6th strongest military power. 5. Nope
@@ponticgreekmapper1335 Ha! Funny how with the Golden dawn you just say nope.. but seriously all the members of that thing should have been put 6 feet under a long time ago
@@ponticgreekmapper1335he Italian bros will be good allies maybe even WWII would have turned out so extremely different if this happened. Hitler would probably shit his pants trying to face this nation and Italy may never have tried anything against Greece perhaps they would even have allied with Greece. And the Roman connection between the two countries Italy and Greece would have been even stronger Moussilini would never have claimed to be a greater successor of Rome if Rome in the east literally was still alive, if he did anything then it would be to ally with Hellas I don’t think he would try go on war against a Greece like this one. Meme jokes for you who created this video/Αστεία meme για το δημιουργό που έκανε το βίντεο (Σύγνωμη αν νομίζεις πως το κάνω χυδαία και το πέρνεις ως προσβολή): Bulgaria, Hungary, and HRE/Austria after being repelled many times: I didn't hear no bell. Rhomania in most civil wars: Have the strength to conquer the Balkans, Asia Minor, and the Middle-East. Rhomania in contemporary era: No, Egypt is taken by the British. Rhomania then: Being encircled and besieged by Turks, Bulgarians, and other rebel factions. Also Rhomania four centuries later: Restore the Empire in an Ottoman style fashion. Rhomania then: Does everything in her power to control South Italy and the Middle-East. Rhomania in the 19th-20th century: Gives them away due to being lost causes. Assyria/Lebanon/Kurdistan/Egypt/Palestine/Israel then: Being controlled by an Orthodox Christian power for centuries. Them now: Muslim states (like how?). Great effort for the video. Wish the majority of the video to actually exist in a realistic scenario. Too bad it's a fanfic scenario.
Thanks for feedback, I will try to explain as many of these as possible. Well first of all im gonna begin with the thing that Rhomania took the Balkans, Asia Minor and the M.East in periods it wasn't in a civil war, in fact its opponents were in many occasions. Rhomania lost Egypt because the British were much stronger in all aspects. Well regarding the next one, the Ottomans also managed to expand from a small beylik to a massive Empire in 2 centuries by having a good administration and military. So it was possible for an Empire which still had strenghten and possibilities. In the 19th and 20th centuries the Empire was slowly collapsing, nationalism was rising etc. They were unable to stop revolts at this point. Ok regarding the next one, these states are muslim because Byzantium didn't try to assimilate them a lot. There are bigger Orthodox societies in all of them, for example Assyrian is half Christian half Muslim, but is governed by muslims. Israel is Jewish as today. I know its not greatly realistic, I tried my best, afterall it was hard to think many minor details in such a video (And now don't worry I don't take this offensively, I like feeback regarding unrealistic parts of the video.
@@ponticgreekmapper1335 The british were pretty useless in land combat. They would decisively lose against the Romans because of Roman home advantage, Roman fighting style being more adaptable and flexible (Kolokotronis would tell his men to lay down when the enemy fired a volley, so the bullets went past them) that british. Another thing is that the Romans in this era arent the ottomans. They were fully industrialised were as the ottomans were against this (because of religion).
@@gamingdealer9514 Maybe but they had a stronger navy, so I expect them to be able to blockade Byzantine ports and Byzantine Egypt and cut off supplies there, or bombard Byzantine coastal forts, making an victory easier
Screenshot from google maps, then in a new layer I was drawing the coastline and the borders and then I was making the entire area inside the coastline white
You’re missing the point. Both Byzantium and Rome fell not because of a particular battle but because of internal political contradictions that prevented them from mustering the internal resources to surmount crises. The far smaller Roman Republic that crushed Carthage was stronger than the huge empire that lost to Alaric.
@@ndmmt-wu7kz That is true. However Byzantium here manaxes to slowly fix some internal issues (such as replacing the mercenary-based army with a "national" one by the 13th century) which strenghtened its position over time. Having won the battle which allowed it to restore Anatolia and hold the Empire all together, it could manage to slowly move into reforms. I know its a bit of an ideal scenario though

Amazing Alternate History Video @ponticgreekmapper1335! This has me questioning more about Rhomania's reputation and relationships with the rest of the world or mainly central Europe. I'm not sure if Rhomania (Byzantine) is a member of the European Union as there was no mention of it most likely because of political mishaps (perhaps not wanting to be caught in a debt crisis like OTL Greece) but can play a major role in trade for a non-EU country. In Africa, I believed that the relationship between Byzantine and Ethiopia would be much bigger and stronger for both countries in trade/military alliance purposes as both majority religions are Christian Orthodox (Byzantine would probably help play a part in keeping Ethiopia from being colonized and independent during the Scramble for Africa and help fight the Italians in East Africa Campaign during WW2.). In the Middle East, the United States would probably have a smaller influence than in our timeline as Arabia (All Unified Arabia Peninsula countries except Yemen) would work more positively with Byzantine as with the rest of the middle eastern countries except Iraq, falling under the influence of Iran so, Probably no 9/11, Iraq Invasion, or war in Afghanistan? Then again, the Islamic State Insurgency exists in this timeline just without Iraq and probably backed by Iran with more or less Islamic Republic. As for the relationship between the US and Byzantine, it would be both good and tense at times as it's interesting to see the 2 Western powers having different viewpoints and ideologies as the US supports Israel as a Western-backed country (More to gain influence and some oil) while Byzantine still recognizes Palestine as a country as well. Unlike OTL Turkey which is a NATO member for strategic purposes, Byzantine is a main pillar and founder of NATO and has more to say than just the US which can lead to a feud between the 2 of them as both are powers in their different regions.
Hmm, you are analyzing some interesting concepts here. I will mostly stand on your mention of the Islamists. No, the Jihadists got little to no foreign support, they were just fighting on their own but easily managed to rise due to their successful campaigns and support from specific regions. The US-Byzantine relations were good during the Cold War but started to deteriote as USA has a more "progressive" western view unlike the Byzantine "Conservative" views in social issues, while also geopolitical differences exist (such as hostility in their interests in the M.East and the decent Byzantine-Russian relations) Byzantine influence in North Africa (Egypt, Sudan and Abyssinia) is strong due to their presence in Egypt for a long period of time, the Greek community of Alexandria and the Byzantine support to Abyssinia.
@@ponticgreekmapper1335 Awesome! Would love to read/watch the relationship between Europe and Byzantine as well but that covers all my questions. Thank you! Edit: Side note I also assume that the Relationship between Ukraine and Byzantine is more or less positive.
I am a history buff by nature, I really like (love probably more appropriate) this kind of "what-if" genre, but, as I am not 20 years old any more, the teeny tiny descriptions are very hard to see ! that is my only issue (so, when I is this style of "what-if's" I tend to shy-away from them as I have start/stop & squint [do plan on getting a "page magnifier" you don't hold it, just place on "page"] to be able to read & follow the narrative, I love is what-if/alt-history genre & eat it up like candy... help a brother out... home-boy... thanx🙏🙂🖖V3
Bravo ! Beau Travail ! You also added the Emperors. I just find maybe a simple independence of Bulgaria and Yugoslavia, same for the Middle East, the Byzantines would not have dropped the case like that I think, especially given their presence of several centuries in the region . Even if he is an ally of the Americans, it seems strange to me. But I quibble, great job!
Well nationalism had rised a lot in the Balkans, and obviously as Byzantium was hit by the stock market crash they were unable to keep the Balkans under control. At this point they also begun realizing that they were no longer an Empire
@@ponticgreekmapper1335 I think that given the stock market crash, Balkan independence would have led to wars and that would have raised nationalism in Byzantium.
16:21 ok, how? Shouldn't Byzantium industrialize first, or gain some sort of access to the Atlantic? The only way I see Byzantium colonizing is in the Indian Ocean. Dominating Sinai and then parts of Africa, India and possibly Madagascar, Sri Lanka or a part of Indonesia or Australia.
They had the naval strenght to go colonizing mode unlike the Ottomans who didn't have experienced sailors for such an operation. If they had good ties with the Spanish (at least for that period) they would be able to cross the Gibraltar and go in the Americas. Then afterwards some wars begun with the Spanish which took over the colony
Is it realistic to Hellenize the Levant? It's the second richest region after Constantinople and I don't see why Hellenizing them won't help the empire in the long run
@@MissionControlTet I consider a Hellenization to be impossible. We are talking about people with a completely different civilization and culture. Although, Christianisation is possible. If I ever continue my 3rd remastered and final mega version of this scenario, I will consider Christianisation of the Levant (mostly Syria) as a possible scenario
@@ponticgreekmapper1335 I see. That and the whole imperialism thing and being a none-stereotypical American. That and also the fact that God speaks to me at times.
@@ponticgreekmapper1335 that makes no sense. That land provides taxable population, soldiers, ports and trade markets while also providing fishing spots and resources. It also is their last remaining land in Italy and the Romans would never abandon their goal of reclaiming Rome.
Great video , but i think there wont be rise of the islamic state in this timeline due to Iraq and arab areas being christianized due to assimilation of these area into the eastern roman empire
Wouldn't it all be Greek Speaking by the 20th century if they maintain control for so long? There would be no Bulgarians or Serbs. They would be integrated into the Greek identity and would be speaking Greek. I can see the Croats lingering since they are Catholic and wouldn't easily integrate, but if they are not turn into a vassal, either integration or genocide would still happen.
The Byzantine Empire wasn't largely concerned in assimilating into the Greek culture, which is why the Arabs still maintained Islam for the most part, and the Slavs in the Balkans kept their own identities. Although you make a valid point that there would have been greater assimilation
@@ponticgreekmapper1335 I do not think that the Byzantines would allow the Arabs to remain Muslims They may allow them to keep their language and culture, but they will force them to forcibly convert to Orthodox Christianity.

great video! however, there's a few things i would change;
3:51 I think that the mongol invasions wouldve happened earlier because the mongols were already present in the area and even if they didnt try tro invade the empire, ogedei had already an invasion of europe planned since 1234.
23:46 The revolutionary events happened way to early
24:15 Napoleon didn't land in egypt?
25:46 I'm surprised that during the 1848 revolutions didn't spread onto the balkans, egypt or anatolia, as from what you've showed me, I thought that they didn't have the best treatment inside the empire.
26:55 Why didn"t the empire grab a seat in the Berlin Conference (strugle for africa)?
27:31 How did the russian revolution happen like that if Russia was winning the war?
Okay so im actually gonna need this for my remastered video because you actually spotted a lot of things that actually don't make sense 😆
The only one I can explain is that the Russians in WW1 weren't really winning, its sorta like OTL here, and the poor living conditions led to the Revolution.

This is what Greece should have been like but the lands which I think Greece should have been if we are to be a bit more humble, then I think all the lands of Western Anatolia with Attaleia in the south some miles east of that a vertical line the whole way up to the black sea
And on the European side all the lands from central Balkan Mountains and downwards as a great natural barrier and a pretty straight horizontal line from the central Balkan mountains the whole way to Epidamnos on the Nova Epirote coast. Alr dude great quality but there is seriously no way the same things like Bolshevikism, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Austria Hungary, and all that jazz would still happen. Even if Rhomania remained isolated, the butterfly effect is enough to change everything.
Well yes I know but I tried to follow historical accuracy in global geopolitics.
if the Byzantine Empire wants to truly define itself as successors of Rome then it must conquer Italy, no Italy, No Rome and no Romans
You sound like those catholics in 800s and so on and doesn't cgange the fact that the roman empire lasted the longest more 1480 years
9:45 Although I am a big fan of Byzantium, I strongly doubt that they could defeat Tamerlane.
I see, you make a fair point, I didn't think of it like that at the moment. Thanks for the feedback!

Meme jokes for you who created this video/Αστεία meme για το δημιουργό που έκανε το βίντεο (Σύγνωμη αν νομίζεις πως το κάνω χυδαία και το πέρνεις ως προσβολή):
Bulgaria, Hungary, and HRE/Austria after being repelled many times: I didn't hear no bell.
I know its not greatly realistic, I tried my best, afterall it was hard to think many minor details in such a video
(And now don't worry I don't take this offensively, I like feeback regarding unrealistic parts of the video.

The US-Byzantine relations were good during the Cold War but started to deteriote as USA has a more "progressive" western view unlike the Byzantine "Conservative" views in social issues, while also geopolitical differences exist (such as hostility in their interests in the M.East and the decent Byzantine-Russian relations)
Byzantine influence in North Africa (Egypt, Sudan and Abyssinia) is strong due to their presence in Egypt for a long period of time, the Greek community of Alexandria and the Byzantine support to Abyssinia.
@@ponticgreekmapper1335 Awesome! Would love to read/watch the relationship between Europe and Byzantine as well but that covers all my questions. Thank you!

They had the naval strenght to go colonizing mode unlike the Ottomans who didn't have experienced sailors for such an operation.
