      Yeah that would be pretty intriguing maybe the USA fully takes part in it instead of Liberia being controlled by the American colonial society essentially becoming the first true colony in Africa this might lead either more American colonialism or something else because a large part of the reason the USA didn’t want to colonize and add territories like that much is because of the hypocrisy around it if Liberia were to become independent in this timeline I would suppose it would likely become a second USA the United States of Africa

    I actually think the key to this scenario lies in that "flavorless" period. The reason Japan's modernization was so successful was due to the developments of the Edo period. The stability and peace brought a bunch of population growth and importantly, huge economic developments. Before Commodore Perry was even born innovative financial techniques were developing in Japan with a rapidly commercializing economy. Many of the Zaibatsu that were key figures of Japanese industrialization got their start here. Furthermore, literacy became even more widespread than it had been in the past. For Ethiopia to have a Japan situation, it would need similar developments in the period before the 1800s imo

    • @信衞門
      @信衞門 10 месяцев назад +39

      Exactly. If I recall, late Edo Period Japan had around 75% of males were literate, which is astonishing given the medieval technology. This was only possible because of the 200+ years of peace.

    • @matthiuskoenig3378
      @matthiuskoenig3378 7 месяцев назад +41

      @@信衞門 they were not a medieval society they were a renaissance one. the europeans had given them european style printing presses before the the Edo period. and they had chinese style printing presses since the 700s AD. resulting in domestic hybrid styles during the edo period. considering they had over 1000 years of printing tech, and hundreds of years of knowledge of western printers, Edo period Japan can hardly be called medieval.

I could imagine some ethiopian campaign up the nile to threaten egypt itself. It probably would push a bit, then get bogged down in sudan. Eating up more british troops in the process.
    but more importantly, if they take djibouti and somali land, they could cut the red sea. Which would put a lot of pressure on the british. Ww1 was close enough that these changes alone could turn it towards a central powers win.

      @@sino_diogenes theyd put a bit more pressure on the ottomans, but they would still be a minor power and they wouldnt add much. The central powers already had the red sea cut by britain. • @abdiabdi3225
      @abdiabdi3225 10 месяцев назад +1

      You're forgetting the dervishes already fighting for central powers and against Ethiopia this would lead to a weird situation in which the Ethiopians try to help the Somalis against Europeans which would never be accepted in Ethiopia (in our timeline they literally overthrow a guy for being to nice to them) if they fought against them it would only cause a much more widespread revolt from the Somalis a war which might take a lot Ethiopia's energy and may even make an independent Somalia possible in the late 1910s.

    • @roiduc9985
      @roiduc9985 10 месяцев назад +1

      Taking Djibouti/Somaliland would not mean cutting Red Sea access - they don't have the naval power to enforce the blockade, Ethiopia would simply control the shore without being able to do much given the Entente's naval supremacy in this space

    • @zombiedalekweck2243
      @zombiedalekweck2243 10 месяцев назад +1

      For all the other reasons said, Ethiopia joining the Central Powers wouldn't change much.
      Not only was Germany already encouraging the Dervish to gain independence and fight the Ethiopians and the Italians, but they NEED British materials in order to fund their industry. Ethiopia simply doesn't have those resources to fuel their industry. Ditching their only real trade partner for them is basically death. Germany couldn't supply Ethiopia as the French, British, and Italian navies in the region would simply destroy whatever small fleet the Ethiopians (Likely bought ships off the British, Italian ships that were captured in the earlier war and a couple Ethiopian built gunboats.) had and use the Aden Protectorate as a port instead.
      The Ethiopian economy would likely collapse, and they'd quickly be defeated from there.

If we speculate more I would predict Ethiopia with a standard of living similar to Chile and much more global influence, but couldn't imagine those effects in the most important prospect, the rastafari and reggae.

    Honestly, if we wanted Ethiopia to modernize, it would’ve been best to start with Aksum. That was the one time they completely dominated trade on the Red Sea, was allied w/ Rome, had influence over the Arabian Peninsula, & was even considered a superpower.
    It would be better to start with Aksum winning the Persian-Aksumite War instead of losing. Then, they’d likely still have territory in the Middle East, influence in the Red Sea, &, most importantly, wouldn’t be landlocked anymore. Then, go from there. I think that would improve their chances BY ALOT!!!!! By starting from the very very beginning. Changing things there… in the nation that shaped Ethiopia’s entire identity. Without those Oromos having invaded Ethiopia and putting it into that 100 dark age that you mentioned, yeah, Ethiopia today would be a whole lot better. Even today, the Oromos have recently seized control over Ethiopia and are currently running it into the ground with their blatant ethnic chauevenism. Their bigotry threatens to destabilize the country, especially with the massacres that they commit, and if any real progress is to be made, than either all ethnicities should have a proportional say in government, or it should be returned to Amhara guidance, as, with the exceptions of the tyrannical last emperor and the much more tyrannical Communist regime that replaced him, Ethiopia was free from INTERNAL strife under Amhara rule, and unlike the Oromo, they do NOT practice such revolting practices such as female genital mutilation nor underage marriages, and have a moral imperative to help end those practices in areas under their control, and for these purposes, they should admitably get over their historical greviances with the Tigrayens and ally with them for these endeavors, as well as invest in the Afar Region in order to convince them to agree to these reforms as well. The Oromos should be expelled from the city province of Harar, which should than be given back to its native people, the Harai, who should also be aided in increasing their birthrates in order to reverse the damage that the last emperor did against them. The Dir and the Isaac must be aided against the hostile Somali tribes, the rest of them except for them, by convincing America to directly intervene for Somalialand’s recognition as a free country, which would also be greatly beneficial to The West due to its location along The Red Sea.

      We need to invest on quality education more than anything. We need to stop using foreign languages to teach scientific subjects in all higher education centers. Amharic needs to be reformed and become the sole official language.

    I've been wondering about a situation like this for a very long time now, and I have to say great video on it!
    But I am curious. What if the Congo managed to do something similar on their own, or together with modern-Ethiopia's rise?
    Or what if the Kingdom of Aksum never falls? Or at the very least, the core of Ethiopia stays in the Tigrayan Ethiopian Highlands; and not the southern lowlands where Addis Ababa resides today? Just a thought. Oh, and speaking of video ideas, what about that South Suda-
    But non-the-less great video, and keep up the amazing work! You are officially my favorite man from the land of the VOC!

      Wtf. Aksum was centered around Eritrea (Biher-Tigrinya & Tigre speaking groups) and Northern Ethiopia (Tigray). Yet you people say it's closest to Amhara and Tigrayans are outsiders. That is like if you said Italians are the least related to the Romans.
      Amharic for an example is the least similar to Ge'ez, in comparison to the groups I mentioned earlier. A language that the Aksumites spoke. I'm not even Tigrayan and I found your comment silly.

      @@keshi5541 That is the problem with the Amhara elite. Their ambition has no limit. Geez is the formal written form of Tigrinya and Tigrait. Amharic is 90% Tigrinya adopted by many tribes that were administered by Tigrayans. The tribes could not pronounce glottal sounds (constants and vowels like ዓ፣ ሓ ፡ ኸ etc) and they omitted certain constants from many words and alter it from the original . sometimes they kept the written word the same but still mispronounce the constants . eg. the word for world in Amharic is spelled the same way as in Tigrinya but pronounced differently: ዓለም but pronounce it like ኣለም in Amharic፡ similarly for sun - ጸሓይ but pronounced like ጸሃይ ፡it is obvious the people who invented the Geez alphabets are Tigrinya speakers. no one creates alphabet they cannot pronounce. examples of omission of constants are like በጊዕ በግ sheep ፡ ላሕሚ ላም cow፡ ሰኣለ : ሳለ to draw ሰዓለ ፡ ሳለ cough because of the omission, both the words for draw and cough in Amharic ሳለ are the same but not in Tigrinya - the original words ሰኣለ ሰዓለ ;

      @@delnadea3916 I've noticed there is some similarity with Amharic and Tigrinya with some alterations (not all the time though). I figured it's possibly due to cushitic influence from Afar and Agaw languages placed on Amharic??

      We could ask the same first point about Germany. Austria invited the Russian intervention on itself through their overwhelmingly heavy handed response to the regrettable assassination. Germany had no legitimate cause to join Austria's offensive war as the Triple Alliance was supposed to be a defensive one.

    In this scenario, it's possible that Ethiopia conquered the Horn of Africa in WWII.
    1) Ethiopia win the Second Italo-Ethiopian war and conquers Eritrea and Somalia. About the question "would Mussolini be stupid enough..." Yes, he was, ask to the Greeks. XD
    2) When France become Vichy, Ethiopia could conquer Djibouti with the justification to prevent a axis-collaborationist colony. Allied thumbs up.
    3) Ethiopia would be an important ally in Africa, specially in terms of supplies to North African front. If the Suez canal had fallen, UK would have been in danger. With that in mind, it isn't so crazy UK sold British Somaliland to keep Ethiopia in the war, is similar to Churchill's offer to give Northern Ireland in return of Ireland entered in the war.
    After decolonization, Ethiopia could leader Eastern African Union, it's its natural sphere of influence. I think the depth of this union depends of the experience of Ethiopia with integrate the Horn of Africa.

      Bro, Ethiopia won the second because Ethiopia never surrendered and their was countined resistance by every single person in Ethiopia from the poorest farmers to the richest nobles. It ended in 1944 with Italy being destroyed by the British, Ethiopians, Belgium, and Free French kicking the Italians completely out of East Africa.

  • @LCCWPresents

    The thing is, Ethiopia kind of did a hybrid of what Thailand and Japan did. Ethiopia modernized it’s military(short of becoming an industrial power) and used diplomatic leverage to stay alive (they used their east orthodox ties to get weapons from imperial Russia to fight Italy in the 1890s). They became a de facto British ally in fighting a revolt in modern South Sudan and absorbed all the regions in east Africa that only the Italians wanted. Their diplomatic influence with the British is why after the Ethiopian military was initially overrun, Ethiopia was able to get British aid kicking out ocupping forces (while still doing most of the work themselves).
