The Panther Cub is in a rare category of an analog delay that can be controlled by tap tempo. Inside is a 100% analog signal path that uses 8 bucket brigade chips to deliver up to a full second of warm and distinct repeats, not to mention the vintage voiced modulation which stays musical across the entire speed and depth range.
Inside, you'll find a new Roar switch to give you the choice of darker repeats that surround you with dreamy soundscapes or a brighter, more aggressive repeat with a penchant for self oscillation. The Panther Cub not only fits into an enclosure half the size of its mother but has been fine tuned to offer improved delay strength and definition across the board.
The soft touch tap tempo switch has a ratio control, allowing ¼,1/8 dotted 1/8 and triplets. JHS Pedals also includes a tap input/output jack for a remote tap switch or tap slaving.
On the other side is an EFX loop that uses a TRS splitter to incorporate other effects such as pitch shifters and other modulation into the wet signal only. A TRS splitter can also be used at the output for your stereo rig.
Of course, JHS Pedals builds the Panther Cub by hand in Kansas City, USA, which is wired for true bypass and designed to use a standard 9VDC adapter.
Fast forward seven years...still sounds amazing, and can be had on Reverb for under $200 USD...I paid $125 for mine. Amazing pedal for a great value.
I always enjoy Andy's videos...we have very similar musical tastes. It's nice to not just hear endless blues wanking with a fizzy amp. I can always tell from his demos if a pedal will do what I want it to do or not. He really does provide an awesome service to the internet guitar community. Thanks. : )
Andy makes this pedal really shine.
Came back to this demo as I am considering whether I like the OG or V2 Cub better and I forgot how good that intro was. Such a good demo!
Just picked one up this weekend. Been playing 30+ years and have owned pretty much all the boutique pedals out there. This is an astonishingly awesome analog delay. The tap temp makes it a monster pedal. Play this side by side with the ubiquitous MXR Carbon Copy and afterward, you'll be selling the muddy-in-comparison CC, guaranteed.
Wow, never thought I'd hear "Down at the Park" in a guitar gear demo. Awesome.
I just got this pedal and I love it
I believed till last moment that it can even be not that expensive. But it was too good to be true. 349$ my dear friends, is the price of this amazing piece of equipment
Finally back!
Sounds very pretty.
The Clash - Straight to Hell at 3:05
Excellent demo !
I would definitely buy this pedal. U2 so clean.
Dont waste your money, the visual sound dual tap delay does more, sounds better, and is cheaper.
ecmproductions11 Same manufacturer? How much is the one you suggest? thx.
no its by visual sound, and its $250. Although its bigger, its a better choice being that it's almost $100 cheaper.
ecmproductions11 The Dual Tap is hybrid analog/digital-the cub is completely analog! The effects loop is a really cool feature too.
I had a Visual Sound Dual Tap...it was a decent pedal but to say that it sounds better and does more...well the former is somewhat subjective but the latter is patently false.
The JHS is all analog...the only analog part of the Dual Tap is the tone shaping circuit...the repeats are digital. While it sounded good it doesn't sound/respond like an all analog delay does (if the analog delay sound isn't a priority, this probably won't matter). I also felt tonally it was a little one note. The JHS has a broader range of tones.
The Dual Tap and the JHS both have tap temp and modulation...the dual tap has a second delay line that can sync with the first when using the tap tempo. It also has a "trails" mode when bypassed (not sure if the JHS has this). The JHS has a single delay line but it also has separate knobs for the modulation speed and depth (the Dual Tap only has a single modulation knob that adjusts the level of the effect...if you don't like the degree of depth or speed, you're kind of stuck) an effects loop for adding different effects to the delayed signal AND it has expression pedal control over any of the parameters...so both boxes have the same number of additional features with the JHS possibly having one more.
this is the most awesome pedal!
One of the best Clash songs ever written.
Sounds great. I wish the roar switch was accessible from the outside though.
we made a slight revision to the enclosure in spring 2014... the Roar switch is now accessible from the outside of the case!
Awesome!
Andy owns!!! And plays without a pick like me!
Supa Puss was the best analog delay pedal of 2013 imo.
If I didn't already have a Way Huge Supa Puss, this would definitely be on my list!
Down in the Park 05:09? I didn't figure for a Numanoid.
Very cool.
what is the first song in this?
Well my Eventide can't handle the road no more. Getting this.
Nice Gary Numan riffage.
Down in The Park!
Awesome!
What is the first song?
This looks so good. Too bad I'm poor
be poor no more.
Down in the park lesson next!
Is there a chance that you're gonna do any "revisits" or anything of previous demos you've done? ( Such as a Blues Driver or that solid state Trainwreck style amp thing that the name escapes me for example... )
SOUL FOOD!
Straight to hell! Nice!
more gary numan here!
does the expression option work for the feedback control?
Does the Panther Cub do stereo?
Gary Numan @6min
Question:
When using the TRS output for sending a dry signal, does the "wet" signal include the original attack? Or delays only?
Would have been nice to hear it without the mod depth almost maxed out.
That first song sounds like a Coldplay track but I can't work out which one
Can you assign the expression pedal to the feedback knob?
The JHS website says "you can program an “expression control” to your favorite knob" but next it says "Assignable Expression (control Speed, Ratio, Mod Depth, Mod Speed"...
Not with the expression pedal. But the point of an effects loop on the repeats will normally work to control feedback level BUT no idea from anywhere whether this will work on the JHS like it works on the Diamond pedals.
fallenshallrise Thx for the confirmation.
the Expression Pedal cannot be assigned and used to control the Mix or the Feedback... doing so would compromise the 100% analog signal path. An Expression Pedal can be assigned to the Time, Ratio, Mod Speed, or Mod Depth. thanks!
JHS Pedals What about a volume pedal inserted into the repeats send/return? Will that control feedback on your pedal? The reason I ask is because I like that feature a lot and I have another pedal that has a similar loop that I use to either add effects to the repeats only or to control the feedback with a volume pedal.
fallenshallrise a volume pedal inserted into the EFX loop would only affect the volume of the repeats, not the setting of the FeedBack knob. On the Panther Cub, there is no way to control the settings of the Mix or Feedback knob via Expression pedal. -thanks!
What's the first song Andy is playing?
What song played in the beginning?? Or its just improvisation
DMSSS yes lol
What's the first song?
papernicolas3 improv
Where can we find a good quality TRS splitter?
search amazon for Hosa YPP118, it's ~$3 and just as good as anything, great quality.
just look for an insert cable, same thing
Thanks for the help guys!
Me Gusta :D
What brand is the Polyphonic octave pedal in line? a POG?
+Andy Gabrys Pretty sure it's a JHS too.
The POG is made by electro harmonix not JHS
Andy - Were you playing Paper Airplanes by MIA at 3:06?
Sort of. Paper Airplanes by MIA was sampled from Straight To Hell by the Clash, which is the song that Andy was actually playing.
its true yuuuuuuuuup
What's the main difference between this and my Deluxe Memory Boy anyone? They kinda do the same thing for a huge price difference.
there are tonal differences, feature set differences, and Panther Cub is smaller size. give one a try and let us know how you like it!
JHS Pedals
I could post a side by side demo if you send me one! Heh.
XenoZenoMusic go for it....
XenoZenoMusic ...meaning, if you grab a Panther Cub...shoot a demo! we get your same question over and over. they are quite a bit different pedals. we may actually do a demo like that shortly as well.
JHS Pedals please do!
EarthQuaker Devices Dispatch Master Reverb / Delay - much better !!! I answer
Completely different pedal, pointless comment.
this pedal IS NOT true bypass. when I switch it off it still oscillates into my clean signal. don't waste your money.
Well that's awesome! Do want it now.
already sent it back. it just kept going as it it never was switched off. cheap.
+Jess Hernandez you're actually wrong. It has a true bypass switch inside of the pedal. You either turn it on or turn it off. You must not know anything about this pedal. Do some homework and know your gear. You have the Internet at your fingertips, you should have just looked it up. Lazy.
+PedalHead I did plenty of hw on this over priced piece of junk. inside is only a "roar" switch and a switch to set the expression jack to tap or expression mode. you made that one up there is no true bypass switch inside the panther cub. lies.
Biased much?
1. You should read schematic before you label clones.
2. You should do you're own homework before you post a list you got from somewhere else on supposed rip-offs.
3. There are
Several delays with similar less
Quality in audio well over 350$
Isn't this just another one of their design rip-offs, where they steal someone else's design, put it in a new housing, and then charge more for the stolen idea? In this case, their $350 rip-off of the $200 EH Memory Boy.
They did the same thing with Devi Ever's Hyperion Fuzz- a $99 fuzz. They sell their rip of it (the Astro Mess) for $200.
Their owner likes to give interviews saying how he spend years trying to get the Supro sound, and then sells the very well know RunOffGroove Supreaux circuit.
Here's a popular list of the pedals they rip-off:
4 Wheeler Bass Fuzz - Zvex Wooly Mammoth
All American - Proco Rat w/ popular tone mod
Angry Charlie - MI Audio Crunch Box
Astro Mess - Devi Ever Hyperion
Bunrunner - Devi Ever Hyperion / Tone Bender
Charlie Brown - Brown Sound In A Box diy circuit from general guitar gadgets
Mini Foot - Bazz Fuss diy circuit
Morning Glory - Marshall blues breaker
Mr. Magic - Zvex Super Hard On
Sweet Tea - MI Audio Crunch Box
Deluxe Memory Man not Memory Boy.
The Cub has a DM-2 heritage, very different from a DMM. In addition, the DMB has less delay time and sounds terrible.
They're pretty open about where they get inspiration for a lot of their products. Besides they make quality gear. And people are buying them, so "calling them out" won't really change anything.
yawn.... yawn....
Tell me someone who manufactures pedals who hasn't ripped off someone else's designs?
this pedal is a rip off, it's true. sounds dope, but it's a biters pedal. either get a deluxe memory man or shell out for something ridiculous for 700 bucks or whatever. JHS has not got my respect.
jack benson Bummer bro. They make sweet stuff. I've never had a problem. Even when my Cub had problems in the modulation circuit, they were really helpful.
I'm sure they are really worried about whether or not they have your respect
