    I realize every person is unique, and no two people have the same experience. Having said that, I’ve been through TKR twice now. (Left-7/26/19, right-11/11/19) It’s brutal but totally worth it. The first fifteen days are purgatory. But if you keep your leg elevated (above the heart, if possible), and religiously ice it, you’ll get through it. Both times, I was driving within 3 weeks, which helps immensely with your state of mind. Write down when you take any meds and what exercises you’ve done, including how many reps. After all, you’ll have plenty of time on your hands for a little while. Do what your PT says, grit your teeth and get through it. Life on the other side is so much better than life pre-TKR.

      I'm 5 days out of my right knee,...I had same day surgery and during my first PT after surgery, my nerve block was still working and I was zooming around, thinking, huh, this is not so bad....ok, so then the next day at home and the nerve block wore off, and brutal would have been a good word for me..for the next 24 hours I felt like someone had a chainsaw on my leg, not that I'd know what one felt like but it's what I'd imagine it to be, I've got a high pain tolerance but this was on a whole other level...if someone came in my home that day and pointer a gun at me and pulled the trigger, that would have been just fine, it's Saturday now and this was last Wednesday and of course I'm still hurting but nothing like I was on Wednesday....you couldn't pay me all the money in the world to do that day over again. So glad to read that you made it through two of them successfully. I had my hip done four years ago and it was successful and I think I'm going to have to get the other one done as well, as osteoarthritis has wreeked havoc on my lower body joints... anyway, I'm done rambling 🤣..take care..

    Before I left for the hospital for my TKR I put a tape saying "CUT here" lol, it made everyone laugh and me feel better :) 72 yr old female, went home the next day and followed directions. It was hell for about 3 weeks and then at the 6 week mark, it was like someone flicked a switch and things just got way better. The hospital I had surgery in was in Simi Valley in California and I received excellent care from everyone. I will have my other knee in 6 months.

    I was so lucky to have what they call a "pain ball" that was filled with pain medication. The fiber optic wire was placed into a nerve above the knee and pain medication would continuously go into the knee to relieve pain. I was in the hospital for 2 1/2 days and I never felt pain with this device. It's a great invention!

      Psychologically, it bothers me to think about a foreign body in my knee. I can’t explain it. Possibly it feels like an invasion of my body as a whole; I’m a little depressed. I am a bodybuilder and I run for three or 4 miles a day and now all of a sudden I have to replace my knee. It hurts my ego a little.

      Linda Mastropietro how are you doing? Your knee maybe replaced because of over use as you were such an athletic person. But it may also be from vitamin and minerals deficiencies. Have a good look into B12 folate and vitamin D and get full thyroid and iron panel done . Hope it went well and your back to enjoying life

    I love these guys! Their videos present the info of knee replacement surgery and recovery in a clear step by step, A to Z method. Stressing pain relief measures and the importance of physical therapy and recuperation are so important and often overlooked. I’m at the four week point after surgery! My Bellin patient “Pre-SurgeryTeam” did exactly all of the steps that you mention. At the two week point I no longer needed the Walker and seldom use the cane. At four weeks back to typical yard work and home chores. Medications were baby aspirin, Celebrex and Oxycoden. You guys are great. I've watched every video of yours that I can find, even though I had my knee surgery a year ago. Wish I had found them before but still even after a year, they are informative. Physical therapy was very important to my doctor. I had my surgery on Wednesday and went home on Friday. I started outpatient PT on Monday 5 days a week for the first two weeks then 3 times a week for about 4 more weeks. No, was not fun, but I think that's why my knee is doing well. I still do my extensions and bends EVERY day. It still gets tight sometimes by the end of the day and swells a little. It still has weird pains and feelings from time to time but I'm thinking they are just healing pains sense my x-rays are good. And now I walk every day too, which I couldn't do before. I was walking with a cane. I'm 71 years old and did it last year so hopefully, it will outlast me.

    I’ve had 3 replacements. I can testify to what the docs say about physical therapy. The success of the arthroplasty is largely dependent on your PT. If you are willing to work hard you will, most likely, have a successful outcome. That includes not only the visits to the therapists but also doing the work at home. It hurts (a lot) but is so important.

    I had my left TKR 9 weeks ago, in 3 weeks I am having a TKR on my left knee. My surgeon said my knee was the worst knee he had ever seen, It was a mess. The only real pain I had was from the swelling on my lower leg. PT didn't even hurt. I used a walker for a week, then nothing after that.
    I walked/worked with my bad knee for almost 4 years before the TKR, with excruciating constant pain. Dr. said my pain tolerance was extremely high. I'm hoping that tolerance is still there.
    I'm looking forward to my next surgery!

    Had one done 15 years ago. Yes, very painful but you get thru it; Its not like you have a choice, well, except that my other knee has needed replacing for years and I "discovered" Tramadol (not classified as opioid at the time). That medication was life-changing for years, as quite frankly I've not wanted to go thru another replacement. I never used the full prescribed dose, but did get to the point it just wasn't helping enough, so I'm going in for the other knee soon. As stated before, "Its not like I have a choice" at this point.
    After many years of avoiding another TKR, I'll admit being more afraid than I was the first time (ignorance is bliss). And all these years of delaying to avoid the process and pain, I've built up my consternation to unnecessary levels. In the end, the lesson is to just get it done once you know you need it, so you don't waste years of the only life handicapped and in procrastination mode like I did.
    Best of luck to all, and thank you Docs for being here to get my head back in the game for my pending surgery.

    OMG! 3 weeks to go after I had to cancel because of bad Vertigo with vomiting. So ready to go again & I am nervous but have 3 torn meniscus (one already done 3 yrs ago) and arthritis not exactly end to warrant knee replacement yet. But, I am 69 & pain is very bad to the point of not being to walk but a few steps. If i had meniscus surgery, in a couple years would assume knee replacement would be due. So I decided for quality of life to just go ahead and get the knee replacements in both knees. I cannot do any of my normal day to day duties. I had the shots & P.T. and didn't help to any degree. Now I wonder if I made the right decision but doc says I'm pretty much bone on bone & I live by myself so need to be capable of doing things myself. The pain thing has me really nervous now & I just hope I don't get lazy on working the knee to keep it from not getting stiff. I watched all the videos & they were very helpful as far as what to expect! Thank You:-))

    Had my L knee replaced in Sept as outpatient. Left for home 5 hours after surgery started. Now 12 weeks post-op, and doing great! First week was difficult with a lot of swelling. Was told by surgeon to ice and elevate 3 times a day for 20 minutes. Rehab said do it every awake hour for 10 minutes. Week 2 was much better, and was walking week 3 normally. Follow exercises religiously and walk short periods of time, but frequently. Getting my R knee done at what will be 5 months after the first. I feel much more prepared for this one!

    Thañks for video. Learned to bend knee and get it going right away. Two back fusion this year have to wait before therapy. So im ready to jump right in getting done Monday. Had so many orthopedic surgeries. Tell staff in or this is like taking out the garbage for me chop chop do what you need to and get me knocked out. My knee surgeon tells the staff in pre op im a veteran and if they screw up ill let them know and that i could do all their jobs including his. In so much pain prior to surgery after i feel great. Except the backs and maybe this.but all my scopes on knees shoulders and elbow recovered well. Dont know why dr missed two complex meniscus root tears in may. Both medial and lateral. Ive had tears both places multiple times before but dont know if root ones. So im hoping all this bad pain since April will be long gone. Im never nervous bout surgeries when your over 100 its a walk in the park. Then right after the outpatient ones off to red lobster for a big lobster dinner. When nurses discharge you and say start with bland diet im like blah blah blah. I told dr that i go to red lobster he said no i said yes. So when the discharge nurse says liquid diet i say nope

    I had a left knee replacement in 2016. On 2/2/2022 I had a total knee replacement on the right leg. It was a robotic surgery. This time, was uniquely different. I get very sick after having being under general anesthesia. This time they did a nerve block on my right leg. I also had a spinal block. This was the best surgery. Woke up alert and not sick. I did come home the next day. Due to COVID, I was by myself. I went to my 2 week appointment and got my staples out. My husband went to his doctor while i was at mine. They tested him for COVID. Needless to say I had to push back my PT 2 weeks, but continued Pt at home. Even though my husband was negative, I got whatever my husband had. Still haven’t actually been at PT. I’m starting 3/9, and driving myself.

    Based on my recent experience, there is very real possibility that nursing staff caring for you once in a room may have been over-coached (or have their own ideas) about “the opioid crisis”. If you suspect or know pain meds are being rationed, or god forbid withheld, have a care partner advocate for you. I was “inches from hell” through most of the night and never fully “got ahead” of the pain.
    Once my situation became known and understood, the on-call doc did not respond for two hours (was out to dinner). A patient may be too worn out and in pain to assert themselves, as I was. I suppose my situation was not the norm, but I still strongly suggest having an advocate (family member or friend) present the first 6-8 hours if at all possible.

      Hi Bob C. Thanks for sharing your perspective. We definitely keep our team aware of the need for narcotics to get through the severe pain of tkr. We also have a pain team who does daily rounds and works directly with the nursing staff. We need to respect opiods but not fear them. They are necessary. All the best and thanks for watching.

      @@lisafeher2408 There are much stronger, more effective meds for pain than Ultram that will help get you thru the first few days. My situation was not about meds being ineffective, it was about caregivers being ineffective - no one seemed aware I had had major surgery and would need appropriate pain control. I know very well its a painful surgery (I had the other knee done 15 years ago), but my block wore off after only a few hours, and my nurse actually gave me a little lecture: "You don't want to take too many opioids". Tkr is so painful but is temporary and over time, if one works hard, uses ice all you can and pt, pt and more pt, the end result will be fantastic! My TKR was a week ago. I was kept overnight due to my sleep apnea. The next morning after doing the stairs I was exhausted, and in pain. I was actually crying, whereas prior to that I was as happy as a lark. At that point I was told I was cleared to go home and after a 2 minute explanation on the painkillers (which my sister, a former nurse, actually had to explain in detail to me, and explain what CPL meant) a wheelchair appeared at my bedside. My sister is older and has pain issues on-and-off. The door was manual, and we got stuck in the doorway trying to exit. Neither of us could move due to my pain, and her struggle with the door, which aggravated her back pain. We called for help several times but were completely ignored. Finally a couple waiting to be admitted helped us get through the door. They were shocked that the nurses and an intern mere feet from us, had completely ignored us. I’d had such a positive experience up to that point. I’d done everything right, brought everything I needed (including earplugs for overnight). I’m getting my other knee done in April. I guess I have to verify I receive sufficient pain control prior to doing the stairs, because I discovered afterwards that wasn’t the case. What else can I do to make things go more smoothly?

    • @joannehastings3696
      @joannehastings3696 9 месяцев назад

      P.S. I’ve already had both hips done (one during COVID) and was kept at least one day longer both times, because I live alone and have 17 stairs to negotiate to my apartment. What a difference an extra day would have made this time! That first day at home was very rough, even with my sister staying with me for several hours. Today I had my first physio and I must have pulled a muscle in my groin, because I couldn’t actually walk after I’d been home for a couple of hours. It’s bit of a setback; but tomorrow I should be back on top of things. The physio said I had very good ROM (but maybe I tried too hard to impress him, lol).

Im now at 125 degrees and close to 0. muscle has returned due to 3x a wk PT plus home exercises. I'm back to work and walking normally but with a little stiffness and occasional aches. I'd say I'm 85% to FULLY normal again. I don't know your story or health etc but I'm 213, 6'0 and normally healthy. not a health nut and not ill . not obese etc....What you put into the rehab is what you'll get out . My Dr said I'm WAY ahead of the curve and that was relieving to hear. I planned 9 wks to return to a physical workplace and I came back at week 6. Light duty for 3 weeks then back to normal. I can do yardwork, work on the vehicles. I steamed cleaned my carpets, .. You'll get through it just stay mentally strong and push it a little EVERY SINGLE DAY.. Best of luck

    I’m 10 days post op. I have been doing knee bend exercises but have only about 90 degree bend. My leg hasn’t been straight for about 5/6 years. The waiting list for surgery takes years here in Scotland. I haven’t even been sent to the physio yet. The pain is subsiding and I’m moving about the house quite well and am back to being independent. I can only lift my operated leg a little. I am trying hard but I’m 62 and it’s brutal and hard work. When will it be back to ‘fairly’ normal movement? I ask here and they just tell me if you work hard at the physio it should return eventually!

      Hi Coral. Sorry to hear about your struggles. So yes hang on it will get better. It is brutal though. Often it takes 8-12 weeks though. We have some videos with our physiotherapists that may be beneficial. Best of luck to you.

    Hey again. Just want to say I hope I did not scare anyone off of this procedure with my story about insufficient pain control at first, because Im three months out (as of today) and I have NO pain in my surgical knee when walking or wven going up AND down stairs! I actually thought something was wrong due to what feels like a lack of sensations in my knee, but its not that, its simply a lack of PAIN - something I cannot recall having “felt” since I was very young.
    Im only 60, but dealt with arthritic pain for YEARS. Yes, I was dealt a crappy hand with my first nurse, then some circumstances, but here’s the main thing:
    Yesterday at my final PT appt, I was asked to rate my worst pain since the last appt (scale of 1-10). “Overall its between 0 and 2, with the ‘2’ only happening during PT (forced stretching)”. Its a “0” unless I’ve been sitting or driving a long time, then stand up - then it’s a little stiff and mildly achy for a few steps. In the end, I couldn’t be happier. Just don’t let me near that *#@&! nurse who held back pain meds😡.
    If you’re life is more and more limited by knee pain and your doc says you’re ok’d for the procedure, DO IT!

    Had a TKR on my left knee 2 yrs ago and need my right knee done as well (bone on bone)...that first surgery & PT was hell, hence my hesitation to have my right knee replaced...I'm scared to go through it again but I do know I need to have it done😢.

    I’m a week in from my (R)TKR and when I was in the pre op room my surgeon walked in, said good morning and asked me what I was having done today? I answered, a TKR on my “left leg”.
    In no uncertain terms he made it crystal clear that my humor wasn’t funny and wouldn’t be well received by anyone else.
    I apologized.

    Docs, I'm anticipating having a total knee replacement this fall, 2021. I have no one at home to help me post-op. ( home will be totally prepared, food preps/cleaning/laundry before surgery)
    With that in mind, should i mandate a 2 day post-op hospital stay. Number two, how can I get home assistance the first 2 or 3 days recovering at home ?
    Number three, is walking really the best exercise post-op and/or is physical therapy mandatory ? Too many questions I know.

      Hi Walter. So one day may be enough. Everyone is different. Be prepared for sure. There are agencies where you can hire temporary help. You may or may not need it. And lastly we would strongly recommend Physio for best outcome but we understand it can be expensive in some places. It is money well spent even once a week and then do the rest on your own. Best of luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did

    Hiya I had a p. F.c knee replacement 10 months ago and now they found I have cement fragments at the side of my knee, what does that mean, and I'm going on a long haul flight in a few weeks will I still be able to go

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Dawn. It is hard to know exactly what they mean however sometimes small fragments of cement can break off. Unless they are large and mobile they often do not cause any pain. Sometimes they require removal. Depending on the severity of your pain, you would likely still be able to travel. Best to discuss with your treating surgeon though. Good luck.

    I have really benefited from your videos, thank you! I am just about 14 weeks post op btkr. I have a bend of over 125 on both knees, 0 extention, better endurance daily, walking better, BUT I have two concerns:
    1). I have extreme tension in both calves and feet, some neuropathy. Stretching does help.
    2.) My biggest concern is that I have so much trouble rising from a low(couch, toilet) seated position. The pain is in the center of my kneecap. I must use my arms to push up and I am beginning to think that this is it and that it won't get any better.
    In your experience is this something that can improve with time and if so, how and what can I do to improve this condition.

    • @TalkingWithDocs

      Hi Barbara. The neuropathy is hard to say but will often improve. Same for the knee cap pain but this sometimes persist. Focus on medial quad strengthening and if concerned get rechecked. Best of luck to you. Lots of time to improve still though. Thanks for watching and subscribing

      @@jacquia5897 I’m two weeks post surgery. PT is going well. My advice is to know up front what drugs you’ll be given and reactions you could have. I failed to ask and have had a lot of nasty side reactions. I think surgery went well but after talking to my internist today he told to expect another couple weeks of challenges...like night sweats🥴. Upset tummy....etc. very careful about what I can eat. Thankful I did exercises before surgery.

      @@terripomajzl1673 Glad to hear you're doing well. Makes me feel more at ease knowing it may not be all that bad. The way I see it is that I may feel alot of pain for 3 or 4 weeks but the way time seems to be flying by, I'll feel fine in a blink of an eye. I'm really excited to see my leg straight again. I've been really self conscious because both my legs are pretty bow due to the eating away of my cartilage. I'm hoping I don't have to wait too long to get the other knee done.

    Had a total knee replacement on 5/8/18 since then I developed a blister on my knee and one spot was bleeding that had stop but the blister still there been sweating a lot been taking stool softener but haven't had a bowel movements had to take off the compression socks due to my feet that turning my feet blueish I was released the 5/10/18 should I be concerned

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  6 лет назад +3

      Hi Lisa Ann Harding. First, if you are concerned you should definitely see your doctor. Blisters from swelling are not uncommon and can often weep clear fluid for quite some time. Ongoing bleeding is also not uncommon however if it continues it should be assessed by a physician. Bowel regularity is often an issue after joint replacement surgery when patients are taking narcotics. Compression stockings are beneficial but often are hard to tolerate for patients after surgery. Hope this helps.

    Thanks - I'm having surgery in two weeks and I haven't heard any of this from the surgeon or the surgeon's assistant. I already am wondering why I'm not getting more advance preparation or communication.
