I had both hips replaced due to years of hip arthritis when I was in my early 60s. Mine are Birmingham-style protheses since I have healthy bones. Six weeks between surgeries. Each took a few hours and after showing I could walk and navigate steps with crutches (for safety) I was on the way home. I was not allowed to drive for a time, and was required to have someone with me for the first 24 hours after surgery. The drugs are really good, no pain. I was given exercises to perform at home. After about a week the crutches were replaced with a cane for a few more weeks. Once I could comfortably walk a certain distance the cane was gone. It has been a life-altering experience. I run half marathons now.
Your videos are invaluable to orthopedic patients who need honest information from professionals about the risks and rewards of hip replacement surgery. Thank you for providing these videos to the online community.
Thanks Danno. We feel the same way and trying to do a small part to provide useful, credible information about orthopedic surgery to hopefully help patients make decisions and have a successful journey through whatever their problem is.
@@TalkingWithDocs All their videos are spot on and truthful. I had mine done 4 months ago. Was walking without Walker in 2 weeks. Returned to work after 3 and I drive a semi locally. I was doing my normal mountain bike riding routine within a month. First week was hard. I didnt get any physical therapy. Didnt need it. The physical therapist at the hospital showed me what to do as far as walking stairs. I have stairs in my home so I'd walk stairs several times a day and do leg lifts. The more I'd walk as the days progressed the better my hip would feel. I was completely off pain meds by like day 9 but still take a small dose of meloxicam because my other hip is bad too but not as near as bad as right hip was so am trying to buy some time.
I scheduled my hip replacement today. I have watched several videos about "before and after" things to do. You guys are FANTASTIC. I am retired and not very active. I HOPE that lowers the probability of a disjointed hip after my surgery. Thank you so much for your videos.
You guys got me through a total knee replacement 18 months ago and now I’m getting ready for hip replacement in October. Thank you for your service and sharing your experience and expertise. All the best to you both
When I was in the hospital on day 1 during PT there was a lady who had just had a knee replacement who did not have a home plan in place. I felt bad for her. The staff tried to encourage her that they would find a place. I spent 3 months planning and preparing because of the information in your video along with the literature the hospital provided me during my pre op 2 weeks prior to surgery. We all had the added challenge this year of the electric company turning the power off during wind events. i had been home from the hospital 3 days and the power was out for 3 days. I had planned! M new y motto is " plan for the worst, hope for the best". Prepare before your surgery! All business were closed during the outage and again, the information on this site helped me to " shelter in place" and do a bit of PT at home by candle light. Another power outage is scheduled for the next 2 days, so again. I can do this because of these supportive videos. Thanks, you have no idea!!
Hi susan. Power outages is a situation that we do not discuss in our videos! Sounds like you have been a lot but came through very well. Ongoing good luck in your recovery. Thanks for watching
Having my second hip replacement this month. Did well with right hip 4 years ago. Your advice coincides with my surgeon. Thanks for your time & good advice.
Thanks Docs. Had a total hip replacement 5 weeks ago and I found the information in your video very useful. I am 59 and have had to slow myself down a bit, because I'm too eager to get on with life. I fully take the message about being cautious to avoid dislocation in the early days and by being patient you end up with a better long term result. Kind regards Mark
Hi Christopher. Thanks for the kind words from across the pond. Hopefully you are doing well. We worked hard to try and make the content useful, appropriate and not super boring. Glad you enjoyed it. Good luck in your recovery. And thanks for watching.
Both of you as highly trained specialists create a feeling of ease. I experienced my first right side replacement at 54 years old. Now I am waiting for my left on the 27th of April. Surgery and technology have come a long way since 2012. Plus it helps to have a daughter and son-in law as PMN&R Specialist. They keep asking about the pre-hab. Excited to get the anterior approach this time. I want to golf by late August.... Keep these videos coming!!!!! 🙂
You two are so informative (and entertaining!) Thank you for putting my mind at ease by answering so many of my concerns and questions about my upcoming hip replacement surgery. You are providing a great service to the public!!!!
Hi Gordon. Congrats! You are well on your way. Glad we could help in any way possible. It is an operation that really changes lives. Best of luck to you. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.
Had the surgery yesterday, now reading this again. It’s really helpful. You guys are so serious here, glad to see you’ve evolved into funster surgeons!
Hi Jennifer. Congrats! Yes at the beginning It took a lot more energy to stay focused and on topic. Now it is more natural! Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
I'm a 71 yr old widow that lives independently, just had a THR yesterday 7/23 @ 10:30a , was discharged same day @ 4:00p. Had a session of PT before discharge and, 1 in-home PT visit ordered. So far ,so good. I see Drive- thru surgery in the future 😂
Hi Brenda. Hopefully we can help reduce your fear. Getting a new hip is a big deal so some hesitation is totally understandable. Try to do what you can to be as prepared as you can. Good luck and thanks for watching. Keep us posted
I just so enjoy your videos, having been through both surgeries. You handle this whole thing so well. I guess I am lucky, as both hips and knee were easy, although knee was painful. I have no pain at all from any metal parts. I rarely every swell, which makes my doctor very happy and I heal fast. Your Patients are lucky to have you two, as you both have a great outlook on it all.
I have a young friend, 18 years old with Down syndrome, that is scheduled for a total hip replacement. I have shared your link with his mom to help them prepare. He is non verbal and quite developmental delayed so the more information they have the better. Thank you for these videos❤️
I don’t know if you docs read our comments, but I just love you guys! I’m 71 year old female fixing to have hip replacement and I wish I could have one of you guys as my surgeon. Y’all just seem like you would be so much fun going through this process. But alas, I live in Texas and I do have a good Dr. Keep up the informative videos.
You two doctors are excellent communicators. You are informative and your humor keeps a stressful listener at ease. Thank you both for taking time out of your busy schedules to make these interesting videos.
These two need to tell patients things that won’t cause dislocations!!!! Like sleeping on sides. And PT that causes any lateral movement. Probably the best therapy walking. Sleeping on a recliner first 3 days helped me.
Thankyou both so much, had hip replacement 10 days ago and was looking for some advice Your video was perfect and answered every question that l had Thankyou so much and all the best from Scotland 🌺
Hi Velvet181. Glad to hear you are on the mend and through the first 10 days. Very happy to have helped in any way. Continued good luck. Thanks for watching our channel and for subscribing if you did.
Well docs i have seen my surgeon. My date is dec 4. I have preop very soon with the class as well. Im nervous but tired of all this preparation. I have a support person. And the church is helping me. Im going to rehab because im alone. I have to take care of that mess. They are not as easy and efficient as you. Hope to talk to you all. By the way thanks for being here for me ❤❤❤
Just got my right hip done yesterday and Im 23 years old so this is tough to accept but it is what it is and its all moving forward and getting better from here. Gotta get my left one done also in a couple months!
I watched your video a while ago and now I am post operative by 6 weeks. Thanks for all the advice you give, it was very refreshing to hear. I still have minor discomfort but am doing everyday things and without any walking aid.
Glad to hear it Colin. So glad we could help get you through your surgery. All the best going forward. Slow and steady wins the race. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing if you did.
I am 6 week after hip doing well walking with can and even with out it. Went to get up grap my kane but lost my balance and fell between chair and coffee table. My husband helped me got up with my husband help I landed on my knees. It was hard to get up because my body strength was week yet, but got up and my hip feels good thank god.
I an scheduled for surgery in 2 days. When told I needed it and the date was set was the worst day of my life so far. I wasstuneduje I had walked into a brick wall. I was not here mentally for several days and y til I read the notes from my surgeon and the 40 page "After Visit Summary" my surgeon gave me I had begun to understand what to expect. Finding your Podcasts on U-tube helped me to understand what I read and the messages on a clinic podcast telling what to expect at my hospital and surgery day was more understandable after I listened to your podcasts. I am nervous but not scared like I was in the beginning. My worst fear is that something will happen to again postpone or cancel my surgery because I had a dental problem come up just 3 weeks before the first surgery date so my surgeon moved it up by 3 days to fit in the dental work 3 weeks before surgery and at my pre-surgeryphysical I had to take very strong antibiotics 4 times a day for a week to clear up a Urine Infection. I was surprised by the showering for 5 days before, nightly and then just before going in on surgery day. And the antibiotic I have to use to not carry an infection in my nasal cavity. So many precautions to be clear of infection and be safe for the surgery. I could have been floored by all the precautions but my 12 step group has helped immensely by giving me again the mental tools to cope with everything I need to do to be ready for the surgery. Sime of these precautions you have not said anything about in your podcasts but have covered many I was scared about so I could cope with the rest. I am still very nervous about the surgery but so much better than the scary fear I has at the first when I was given the first surgery date.
I can't cross my legs now. That won't pose a problem for me. Lateral is new to me. I knew about anterior and posterior so, I gotta look this up. You are great. I LOVE your "Mr. Carell, Steve if we may" video (he was seated crossing his legs so his surgery must have been a success)
🇬🇧🇬🇧I’m two and half weeks after my THR. Thank you so much for your videos. So helpful. Especially the bit about the leg being swollen. I was a bit worried about that as my leg is quite swollen. But I have had 11 layers of stitches on the muscle. The pain the first week was unbearable but now a lot lot better. I’m on crutches now and getting through it. Thanks from the UK 🇬🇧 x
Quess what drs because of you i have planned my after care. I know since i am a social worker in health care we are the worse patients. Thank you again. I keep listening . I see my surgeon in 2 weeks. Thanks. ❤
Here is another expression of appreciation to both of you for making these videos . I was originally booked to stay an extra night at the hospital . I'll have to talk to the surgeon about the possibilities after surgery . pww
Thank you so much Docs,I had my third knee replacement on the 8th Dec 21 and on the 10th March 22 I'm having a hip replacement. So I'm so grateful for your advice As I'm not sure what to expect after the hip. So thank you again.
Had THR a month ago and I'm still dealing with pain (definitely that different kind of pain though) and I'm not as mobile as I thought I'd be a month later. But, I was down for almost a year before surgery. Literally could not hardly walk, period. Because of my age I had an extremely hard time finding an orthopedic surgeon to do the surgery. My muscles have definitely depleted so I'm going to have a ways to go to get built back up.
I was also down for a year and going around my apartment in an office chair, sounds like our situations were so similar. My physical therapist showed me how to walk upright taking longer strides and not walking and small fearful steps.I'm 16 days post-op and it's still very tight and sore at the top of my thigh and I'm really sick of ice packs. The exercises help.
the "anterior" approach to hip replacement which I just had at Cedar Sinai in LA (Marina Del Rey - DrTiberi - WOW!) i am amazed at the way. Truly remarkable.
I love watching you two! Great information and entertaining! I am having total left hip replacement in 3 weeks! Your videos have been so helpful! Thank you so much!! God bless you both!❤️❤️ Wish you were my surgeon!
Excellent discussion. You answered many questions that I had not thought of. I am 74, have a hip replacement coming up, and am trying to be prepared and informed.
If knees and hips both need replacing which one do you recommend be replaced first? Love your videos. Thank you for taking the time to make for the general public.
If you have a complication-free anterior approach procedure you can go home the next day. No movement restrictions. No special equipment, short use of pain meds. Very quick recovery.
That's great! What kind of job did you go back to & driving so soon ?? I just had TRH W/ bursectomy & reattached tendonds to my right buttocks. Words can't describe the pain / pain levels post op. All went well. Going to be long recovery process 👍
Wow. This was great. You two work well together and present an easy to understand video(s). I'm going to watch your other videos on hip replacements later. Thanks for sharing/posting! Cheers!
I got my anterior THR yesterday at noon. I have burning pain at top of thigh and swelling. PT guy was proud of me for sitting on the edge of the bed finally without feeling like I was going to pass out, but I couldn't use the walker but a couple steps without feeling woozy. I want out of this hospital because I'm pretty stressed. Addendum: I did 6 stairs and walked a short distance in walker. I got teary watching your videos, not to be mushy.Friend coming 6:30 to pick me up.
Hi El. Congratulations on being done! Glad we could help in any way. Go slowly and do your best. Each day will typically get better. The burning can be related to nerve pain from traction during the anterior approach. Best to watch it carefully and inform your surgeon sooner rather than later. Thanks for watching and for subscribing if you did.
What would your suggestion be for bowling and swing hard in golf? Im a 41 old male that had a skiing accident and needed a hip replacement. Im 2 weeks out of surgery and went very well and each day is getting better. I guess at my age should I expect to have long term limitations or will things slowly get back to normal? I appreciate all your videos!
Just had my hip replacement..... 1 month in now. Give yourself plenty of time. Use your pain meds .... maybe invest in a rental or purchased portable toilet to place close to your bed.... used a "strap" to get my leg onto the bed. Eat light. Practice walking every day .... with a cane, crutches, whatever works for you.... make sure that someone is with you when you are new to trying to do your walking ... I'm doing so much better now 1 month in.... and I'm not crying anymore!!!!!
Flying, I was stuck in Philippines after my partial hip replacement, hard an motorbike accident there. I had 2 pillows made for me, one 5" and one 4" I sat on those in the wheelchair and on the plane ride at 7 weeks, wanted to get back to USA. Dometic flight was 2 hours in Philippines, and then I took international flight and got the seats that lay down, and flew from Manila to Seoul which was 5 hours, and then to USA which was 14 hours. I was careful and used a walker/wheelchair the whole trip
@@TalkingWithDocs I am still on cruthes after 10 weeks, I saw my US othro 2 weeks ago when I got back to USA, and we are doing agressive PT. He did xray looks like the thing in my femur is too small, and the thing in my hip is too large. I had a partial hip replacement. After a few more weeks if don't get much improvement he will redo my surgery. I can't my right leg, same side as broken hig, or lift it very much. This is what happens when you get stuck in a 3rd world country, it hasn't been fun so far. Also they found a blood clot in my hip when I got back to USA, so I am on meds for that, they think the clot is older and not travel induced.
@@TalkingWithDocs Latest Update: Hardware failure from Philippines implant (imagine that). Got blood clots from knee to upper pelvis had surgery to remove those, and they put a filter near my heart to catch any clots, I did have small clot in my lung. Week after clot surgery I had my total hip replacment redone in the USA. 6 weeks later I am now using 2 canes down from walker/crutches.
Hi Dr. Zalzal, It's been just over 5 months now since my THR. The pain is gone from the ball and socket joint which you replaced which is awesome! I've been doing my exercises 3 times a day for the last 5 months. I was wondering why I'm still feeling tightness just under the incision still? Did you have to sew the 2 ligaments and the 4 rotator muscles back onto the head of the femur and that's why it's still feeling tight?
Doug Hart Hi Doug. Glad to hear you are doing well. The muscles are sewn back together but the main reason you still feel tight is regular post operative recovery. Soft tissues respond to the incision and surgery in a variable way. This will usually soften up over time but can take up to 2 years. Exercise and time is usually the answer. All the best and thanks for watching
Thank you so much for this information. You clarified the 3 month rule for me. I’m 3 weeks out from Total Hip Replacement on Right Hip (Anterior). My wound looking a little questionable, seeing NP tomorrow. I was in Special Care Unit for 2 1/2 days bc it was a difficult surgery (the surgeon spoke with me post op, but I was loopy and retained nothing except he had to use cement bc my bones are soft) . My BP also went too low. Pre Op had hgb of 13.5, post op 9.2. Got 2 units of blood in hospital. Pretty sure my healing is being thwarted by Beta Thalassemia Major ......my hgb this past Monday was 9.7, so I just got 2 units today. I’m hoping with more frequent transfusions I will heal quicker. I’m using cane. I’m not sure what they had me on whilst in hospital, but have only taken Tylenol for pain relief since. They had me on Celebrex(until today) to avoid bone growth around device (I think), baby aspirin to avoid clots (I only take one but supposed to take 2 - nosebleed scared me) sometimes being a lifelong patient makes you so protective of your body, you decide to take control (I know there are risks in this thinking), Prilosec ( protect stomach) and bactrim bc of wound- think for me, personally, this is going to be a long road. This started 5 years ago with a fall. Ughhh, pins in, pins out, pandemic delay, and here I am. Your videos have helped me in past also. Thank you. Greetings from NY/NJ . Oh, one more thing- part of my recovery was spent in hotel with accessible suite....one of my best decisions bc the shower was a dream and life was easier. I wish I could’ve afforded to stay more than 5 days!! So many success stories and I feel like a lagger...but trying. You guys cheer me up. 🖖🏽
Hi Linda. I broke my hip in a fall while on vacation. I was transferred to a trauma unit and had to wait 2 days to be operated on. I’m an Advanced practice RN I had to fly home with a pump implanted into my femur. I wrote my story above. I wish you a speedy and full recovery. I’m 7 weeks out and started feeling better at 5 weeks.
@@TalkingWithDocs I subscribed. I occasionally feel a 'clicking' feeling in my groin area. I'm 7 weeks out & doing well. Minimal pain, although they sent me home from Memphis with an indwelling F1 femoral block with a pump. As an L&D nurse for 40 yrs I'm very familiar with this pump as its the same one used for epidurals during labor. I flew home with all this 'stuff'. The catheter came out accidentally but pain was minimal.
@@NYCgirl927 holy moly!!! You flew in the midst of all this?? That had to be brutal!! So you have pins now? I can’t find your post...can you put my name on it, so it will bring me to it?
hey dudes, sup? i just had full left hip surgery. im 49 years old and finally after the covid pushed everything back 1.5 years i have no more pain.. well now there's a new pain, but that is self induced. thanik you.
This was so informative. I have surgery 8/16/19, and am teting to gather as much clinical information as possible. The last question...when can I go back to work was what I was wanting confirmation of, and is in line with my consult. Thank you both.
Hi J Kimberly Walker. Usually patients go back to work around 3 months if they are able to stay off work that long. It simply allows them to recover and adjust to their new hip. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
This needs updating. Most people go home the same day as the surgery. I had someone take me and bring me home. She also stayed with me for two nights with another person just hanging around "in case" of a problem during the first three days.
Hi Kitty. We would agree. Most of our patients now go home same day or next day. Thanks for sharing your experience. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
I guess at this point after having a posterior removal 14 years ago, this one, at two days old, is painful but peaked the last 24 hours........ I think.I may have become the next expert. Post OPP Every time you sit down or get up or out of car or bed keep your knees together. And listen to these guys.
Talking With Docs And one more thing that I did differently this time. I loaded up on magnesium because I didn’t forget that the pain reducing medication shut my pooper down for a few days. It wasn’t BIG OLE DEAL..this time. I’m a DC. Had the operation on Monday. Took the rest of the week off and was back in the office on the following Monday. The little portable stair stepper I picked up at the second hand store did the most good. But, $165,000 is amazing to me. Alaska Regional Hospital. Wasilla AK. Checked in at 6am and walked out at 3:30 pm.
Thanks Docs! Since I've left the hospital, I've had numbness on the top and outside of my right thigh. It's been 11 days now with no change. Is this a concern?
Doctors, I have one simple question, I'm going to have hip surgery in 3 weeks, I'm scared because I'm going to have to go through this alone, and I'm 66 years old, do you think as long as the surgery goes well, that I will be ok to go home, considering I done things to my apt.that will help me through my recovery. What do you recommend? Go home or rehab? Thank you if you can answer I will be grateful.
Very good video and information. 👍I have extreme pain from spinal stenosis in my left leg (for 9 years) and four spinal surgeries that did not stop any leg pain. Discovered my left hip needs replacement, so having that done in a few weeks. The nerve pain makes it feel as if my knee and ankle are broken so I have no idea what sort of pain will be lessened by the hip replacement. Also I despise the opiate pain meds as they give me diarrhea that is worse than pain. but I have never felt any pain relief (just wacky brain function) from a dozen different pain meds including morphine. I can only hope the hip replacement helps so I can walk and reach my feet without as much pain. Even Mayo Clinic would not help me with the spinal stenosis. I have four lumbar vertebrae fused with rods and screws. I've been watching hip replacement surgeries on YT. Great praise for the doctors and staff that perform this surgery. Amazing work and skill. Thanks for your video. I was hoping to start a new job in February but sounds like I'm going to have to turn that down because I would need to drive. Darn. 🤕
Hi rizzle. You are welcome for the video. Good luck to you as you get ready for your surgery. Sounds like you have a few things going on so your course post-operatively may be different than average. Just press on slowly and good luck to you. Keep us posted and thanks for watching.
You guy's are great .Your very informative and very easy to listen to,I love your banter between the two of you.I live in Westchester county New York and had my hip replacement done 2 weeks ago. Each day feeling better, main thing to keep in mind is not to rush getting back to normal.I have a question for you please I drive a truck for a living locally having to get in and out 20 -25 times a day would you recommend that find a different occupation. I am 65 and was planning to retire next April ,I don't think I'm going to be able to do that. Your opinion please Thank you, Jack Garland
Hi John. Thanks so much. You will likely be able to go back to work but everyone is different. Start slowly and see how it goes. If modifications are an option that may be easier though. Best of luck. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Hi Lynn. You are welcome. We have a video on that. It depends on the type of surgery and the type of dressing. You should watch it. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
HI Doctors Your RUclips videos are outstanding. So I am 63 years old, have osteorthritis throughout my body and Osteoporosis in my spine and hips. I had three level ACDF surgery 1.5 years ago and because of the Osteoporosis they had to do "spine fusion" and not disc replacement which is the more modern approach to this. I continue to get Prolia injections and have seen a little improvement in my hips. I am having hip issues, trouble walking, pain in my thighs and hip xrays confirm "severe osteoarthritis" and a bone on bone situation. Both hips are bad. I have always stayed in shape, exercise regularly and weigh 108 pounds. I am wondering if due to Osteoporosis I am limited in the procedure type you could use similar to how I was limited in my ACDF back surgery? I am also wondering if due to this, my recovery would be longer. In addition, would there be any longer term limitations. After the ACDF back surgery, I now can't lift more than 8 pounds, I can no longer go on rides at Disney, go on small boats, swim without a face mask, etc. I would appreciate your insights. Thank you for the great educational service that you are providing for us. Susan
Ok guys great video. I have just had a hip fixation done with just screws how long do you think I will be off work? I am a builder & self employed so I am not getting paid for being off . How long can I jump on my bike & cycle any info will be greatly appreciated thank you. Kind regards UK England
At the 4.56 mark in the video you hit the nail right on the head. In my case, I was supposed to have a THR on the right hip in May but it was postponed because of a pesky skin infection which covered the incision area with sores and variable eschers. I was put on very powerful oral pain killers (including Palexia) and told I had to wait. Yep, I waited until just last Wednesday. I've now had the surgery. Posterior entry. Let me tell you that my pain has been terrible. The worst thing is that the gamut of oral painkillers does virtually nothing to help me. My surgeon has put me on Lignocaine Nerve Pain patches and frequent doses of Endone which, in reality, don't help much. I am supposed to start personal rehab in the home tomorrow but I don't think it will get very far. Honestly, when I think back I wish the surgeon had put me into a deep coma for a few months before the surgery. At this very moment my right leg, especially the front of the upper thigh, feels terrible. I hurt, I hurt badly!
Hi tripsadelica. Thanks for the feedback. Any joint replacement is a significant undertaking and will take time but the vast majority of people do very well in the long run. Hang in there and keep working hard.
My hr is in 2wks. Not sure if I'm going to a rehab after surgery yet, but I'd like to schedule my physical therapy now. Is three weeks to long a wait after my surgery, to begin my phys ther???
So here we are exactly one year later. Bilateral knee replacements doing fantastic and still off cigarettes! No one is more suprised than I. Stress the pre-op PT it made all the difference! Dr Vivek Sahai calls me his rockstar! Wish I could say all news was good, undergoing a Catherization and possibltTAVR procedure in the next week.....then this fall I am scheduled to have DBS surgery to treat my. Severe Essential Tremor! Keep up the dialogue!
Hi from England my wife fell and fractured her right hip whilst on holiday in Sweden. The Swedish hospital have replaced her hip joint and now after 5 days the hospital want to discharge her. She can walk with a frame shower toilet and sit in a high chair but has yet to try stairs. Our insurance are arranging the repatriation probably by ambulance and plane. Do you think it is too soon to fly? What precautions would you take for the journey?
Hi John. Sometimes there are no other choices. Careful not to bend too much at the hip. Usually blood thinners after surgery. Sorry this happened and best of luck
Thank you docs for the video. My physiotherapist told me that I can cross my non-surgical leg over the surgical leg, not vise versa. Would you please reply to my basic query? It should be mentioned here that I had undergone femoral head fracture surgery three months back.
thank you so much for your videos have being follow up with the ur video and its a great one, every one with total hip replacement should fellow up this videos. A year ago, my mum had her right hip replaced but as at now the left hip which does not have any issue has started swollen and hurting her and can't walk again even with the walker. Please I need help. my mum is 66years of age. Thanks
Really finding your videos informative . I’m 72 hours post op from THR. I’m home , can walk unaided on crutches . Can get up and down from chairs ( higher ones) and have managed to walk unaided on one crutch . My mobility has improved from doing the rehab from my physio . I’m hoping for recovery to be sooner than later . Could I ask you if you think I’m going ok after 72 hours ? I’m 49 male . Thanks
Hi phil. Glad the videos have helped. Sounds like you are doing amazing. Keep up the good work. I'm sure your surgeon would be very happy. Best of luck to you and keep us posted. Thanks for watching and for subscribing if you did.
Amazing progress Phil. You are a lot younger than myself. I am 72 year old female. This is start of week 3, after hip replacement. I am still on 2 crutches. Out to walk as often as possible. I did 700 steps this morning. 700 again in pm. It's slow steady progress. Really a bit of uphill, to be honest.
Hi Murphy. The total hip precautions are usually for 6-12 weeks but patients with total hips should forever avoid extreme range of motion. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
I just had six days total in a Thai hospital after full hip op. Day of op - just bed obviously. 2nd day after op - just bed again. Day 3 - start on walker
Interesting. Very much exactly what I'm being told. Today is 26 October 2021, my left hip was replaced on the 18th. Procedure was posterior incision, not lateral. As To time in hospital? In the OR @09:44...was waking up at about two PM, and my designated driver was taking me "home" (I chose a hotel for a few nights, personal option) at about 3:30 - 4:00! No overnight. (Kaiser, Southern California). My experience might be unique, it might be "typical". Minimal to no pain from the incision, for those of you looking at having this done. I have some muscle weakness, from a bit of atrophy...and mild neuropathy in the feet, but that was there prior. Again, just one week in and it's better than I expected. BTW, yes I drive, it is the left hip...
Hello and thank you for the information. I have to go to get the stiches out it will be 3 weeks since the surgery. My question is how do I sit in a car seat. Is it safe because it can be a bit low
Hi kath. You are very welcome. Usually it is ok. Just go slowly. The main risk would be leaning far foward which would increase the amount of flexion at the hip. Best of luck and congrats on being well on the way to recovery. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing if you did.
great vid gentlemen. my question to the both of you is, are there any braces a person could wear after surgery to limit movement and minimize the risk of dislocation?
Hi kenneth. That is a good question. Ideally the hip should be stable enough to not need a brace. We talk a lot about dislocation but thankfully it is very rare. Just do what you are told. Be careful. Get the muscles strong. And enjoy your new hip! Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.
I had two hip replacement surgeries one in March the second one in April no help I just did what the doctor and nurse said ,pain medicine, back to work In June no problem, doing great now
Thank you guys I just had hip surgery a week in a couple days ago and you're the first video I found that was straight up what to do when to do it and how to do it and how long the thank you guys very much amen
Had my THR done this week. The evening after the surgery sucked. I am 3 days in and things are going great. Thanks for all the advice.
Wow
Having a pre op mid next month. Thanks for the videos and your sharing is giving me confidence that everything will be ok.

Agreed!
I scheduled my hip replacement today. I have watched several videos about "before and after" things to do. You guys are FANTASTIC. I am retired and not very active. I HOPE that lowers the probability of a disjointed hip after my surgery. Thank you so much for your videos.
Hi John. Thanks so much for the positive feedback. Good luck with your surgery and your recovery. Thanks so much for watching.
the risk of disjointing are probably quite low because you will be in so much pain every time you move you wont want to move!
Scheduled for surgery in two weeks and have been very nervous . Very thankful to you both for the time you took to make these videos.

Hi Mark. Thanks for the kind words. Glad to hear you are doing well and we wish you all the best with your new hips. Thanks for watching.
Had THR on October 22nd (2 weeks ago) - this is best content i've seen. Thanks from the U.K fellas
Awesome Greg. All the best
Just had my left hip, anterior entry. Walking with no problems at 9 days. I feel alive again.
You two are so informative (and entertaining!) Thank you for putting my mind at ease by answering so many of my concerns and questions about my upcoming hip replacement surgery. You are providing a great service to the public!!!!
Why thank you Olivia. All the best with your upcoming hip replacement

I was just informed I will have to have a total hip replacement and I am scared. Thanks for answering all the questions I had! Great video!
These two need to tell patients things that won’t cause dislocations!!!! Like sleeping on sides. And PT that causes any lateral movement. Probably the best therapy walking. Sleeping on a recliner first 3 days helped me.

Carell, Steve if we may" video (he was seated crossing his legs so his surgery must have been a success)
thank you for the great advice and humorous delivery of the information!

Hi Gypsy Dover. Well the hardest month is typically over! Good luck to you and thanks for watching.

Thank you! Already on 4th post-op day I got my operated leg on the bed easier!
You are very welcome. Nice El!
What would your suggestion be for bowling and swing hard in golf? Im a 41 old male that had a skiing accident and needed a hip replacement.

Is the risk if infection only in the first few weeks or can it be anytime ?

Darn. 🤕

Your opinion please
Thank you,
Jack Garland
Hi John. Thanks so much. You will likely be able to go back to work but everyone is different. Start slowly and see how it goes. If modifications are an option that may be easier though. Best of luck. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Can you have pain in one groin area, that can be caused from hip arthritis or arthritis in your lower back?
Do y’all have a video yet on what to do in preparation pre/post-op for hip labral repair?
No we do not but we can add it to the list for sure. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Thanks a lot
I really feel much better . These type of videos are helpful
Excellent information - thank you - please explain how many days after surgery can I get into a shower? Will I get a waterproof dressing on my wound?
Hi Lynn. You are welcome. We have a video on that. It depends on the type of surgery and the type of dressing. You should watch it. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
HI Doctors
Your RUclips videos are outstanding.
Susan
Thank you so much for the clarifying so many issues. So helpful.
Glad you found this video useful.
Thank you Doctors for this video. I learned a lot.
Hi J Scott. You are very welcome. Glad to help.
Dr
Vivek Sahai calls me his rockstar! Wish I could say all news was good, undergoing a Catherization and possibltTAVR procedure in the next week.....then this fall I am scheduled to have DBS surgery to treat my. Severe Essential Tremor! Keep up the dialogue!
Congrats In The Kitchen With Bubby! Best of luck with your upcoming procedures. Thanks for watching.
Do you recommend prophylactic antibiotics for dental procedures ar other invasive things after THR?
It’s a moving target but we are moving away from this recommendation in light of recent research
@@TalkingWithDocs as of today, my doctor is still recommending it for two years. Upstate NY.
Thank you docs for the video. My physiotherapist told me that I can cross my non-surgical leg over the surgical leg, not vise versa. Would you please reply to my basic query? It should be mentioned here that I had undergone femoral head fracture surgery three months back.
Yes that would be ok. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Thank you, very helpful. However, what do you call a "low chair"? How low is low?
Hi Alpha. Low enough that you have to bend beyond 90 degrees. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
@@TalkingWithDocs Thank you for your answer. Sorry for one more question... Does it also apply if you're operated on with the anterior approach?
so water skiing is going to be out this summer
Likely yes. Maybe next summer too 😁. Thanks for watching and subscribing
thank you so much for your videos have being follow up with the ur video and its a great one, every one with total hip replacement should fellow up this videos.
A year ago, my mum had her right hip replaced but as at now the left hip which does not have any issue has started swollen and hurting her and can't walk again even with the walker. Please I need help. my mum is 66years of age.
Thanks
Hi David. Best advice is to get an X-ray and go from there. Good luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Hi Docs. How long must I use my crutch for? I had my hip replacement about 8 weeks ago. Thank you
Hi Dawn. Every surgeon is different but usually 2-3 months. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Very interesting video docs as always! Good to know about hip replacement if I ever need to have one in the future. Thanks love you guys! 😊
You will be ready Alida! Thanks for watching and subscribing
Great video Docs very interesting and informative. Thank you sooo much!
So welcome Darlene. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Hi Doc’s thanks for your videos. With the literal or posterior approaches are there any lifetime restrictions or precautions.
Nice Berkcam. All the best. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Thank you for telling your story Captain D. All the best. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
I had two hip replacement surgeries one in March the second one in April no help I just did what the doctor and nurse said ,pain medicine, back to work In June no problem, doing great now
That is awesome Paul. Congrats. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
@@TalkingWithDocs thanks ,no problem
Might I ask did you the direct anterior approach?
I’m having posterior hip replacement right side. How to heal well.
The doctor with orange cap - I love your wit :)
Thanks so much Manoj. We do our best to be helpful but somewhat entertaining. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Thank you guys I just had hip surgery a week in a couple days ago and you're the first video I found that was straight up what to do when to do it and how to do it and how long the thank you guys very much amen
That's awesome. Best of luck
Thanks guys I’m getting ready to have this surgery.
Ok Mark. You’ve got this! Thanks for watching and subscribing
