  • I'm trying to fix both the grab handles on my Dodge Ram. The passenger side was broken completely, but the driver's side was still working. I purchased the repair kit from Geno's Garage: www.genosgarage.com/GRAB-HANDL...

    It's hard to explain but I used 22 gauge sheet metal, cut and bent it so it wrapped around the plastic. I then cut notches in the metal at an angle so when slid over the plastic, it gripped tight. I then placed hose clamps around the metal and gently heated the metal with a torch until the plastic started melting. I then tightened the hose clamps until flush with the plastic. Worked perfectly.
    Mine broke initially when a 5' 5" 400 lbs ogre working at the walmart tire center thought they were for pulling your entire body weight into the truck. Broke my dash also. Walmart paid to replace the dash and the pulls. My wife broke the passenger side the same way which is the one I fixed using the metal, heat and clamp method.

    I have an 04 ram I have this problem. I think it’s crazy that a huge American work truck like mine has these garbage grab handles. I had a 02 Tacoma I guarantee your not pulling those handles off

      I know, nuts right? This is what happens when accountants get to make decisions. I'm sure it saved them a few cents going with all plastic instead of at least reinforcing it. Although having a metal handle wrapped in the plastic this would never be an issue.

    After many failed attempts to fix mine using various materials, I was finally able to find some rubber grommets that fit over the shitty plastic pieces that have rectified the problem. I used some washers and hose clamps to strengthen it and had to use clamps to hold the handle in place while tightening the 10mm bolts in.

      Glad you found something that works. Unfortunately these things didn't work after it had already broken.

    @ Roosters Garage I think a dremel would do better what you're doing with a utility knife and file.

    • @TheRoostersGarage
      @TheRoostersGarage  7 лет назад

      It probably would. I have never purchased a dremel because it would get so little use. I probably should at least get one from HF for the $7 or whatever it costs.

    Best way to fix it is to use a soldering iron and melt the plastic back together. Also, you can embed some wire into the plastic with the soldering iron. Works great takes like 10 min and its free if you already have the soldering iron and some extra wire laying around.

      I tried the soldering iron to melt the plastic back together, and admittedly I'm not very good with the melting plastic technique and all I managed to do was burn a hole through and make a mess. I didn't have any extra plastic to fill in though, and that's probably where I screwed up.

    One of the 10 mm screws and insert or just spinning cannot get out any suggestions

      Pull while you are trying to loosen it. One of mine did the same thing and there was a section of the threads that was completely missing. By applying pressure while turning the bolt, it was able to grab fresh threads and come out. If that doesn't work, I think you'll have to drill it out.

    Good day in my brother truck the screws won’t come off they just turn and turn and can’t get un screw is like they are stripped!

      Oh no! Have you tried gently pulling while unscrewing? Sometimes this lets it get past the bad part and start cutting new threads.

    Another trick for temporary fix, maybe good for you? I took the 2 broken pieces & applied JB weld. Let set up for 24 hours & put back in truck. 5 minutes fix!.

    UPDATE: This did not end up working. I even tried a plastic welder from Harbor Freight. Didn't work either. Had to scrap the handle and will have to replace. I will use the aluminum repair kit on the new handle to keep this from happening.

      Rooster's Garage , How did it not work?

      Since my handle was already cracked, I knew from the start that it had little chance. The cracks became larger and with the stress of people continuing to use it, it finally came off again. The bottom of the shoulders were still mounted, but the 90 degree angle of the plastic just didn't give it much strength. The entire handle was poorly designed from the start.

    The disk is the weakest part hence why it broke. don't see the epoxy making it stronger.

      It didn't. It actually broke within weeks and had to be replaced.

      Kinda obvious. Why would they fix it when they figure people will buy a new part over and over? The cables inside the window regulators in Dakotas and Rams break very easy. It's a simple fix by the companies that supply the parts if they replaced a plastic part, that holds both ends of the cables in the window regulator, with a metal part. But instead they know people will keep buying new regulators. So same goes for the design of the pull bars and any other parts that they can get away with.

      Same with the plastic doors in the heater boxes. They break over time. It's the manufacturer's job to make their profit margins as high as possible and I get it. It's our job as consumers to go with the product with the least number of failures. I still have this truck and I'm still happy with it. 12 years old and I've just recently started replacing expensive parts.

      They are designed to break like that so that the side air bag can come out lol.

      @@Roller76 everything is cheaply made (plastic). Or you need a special tool🤬. I had a Kia Sportage that I needed a special tool to change the fuel filter!!! They make it harder and harder for us back yard mechanics! So frustrating.

    lol ahahahah. That shit does not do a dang thing. All the force is still on the same little plastic part.

    • @TheRoostersGarage
      @TheRoostersGarage  2 года назад

      Yep, and that's what I figured before I bought them, but I also thought my moving the force from the 90 degree angle to a straight part it might help some. Plastic just sucks, but plastic pull-out force is weak, and by sandwiching the plastic with metal I was hoping it might help. In the end, it was just metal surrounding the same part, and the same pull-out forces were still on the same little plastic. Had there been some fastener to go through the plastic and redirect some of the force, I think it would have worked better.

    Just painful to watch some people, fyi those are a fix only for new replacement A pillar trim not a broken piece actually says will not work for broken ones in the instructions

      I know they are only to fix new parts, and I think I might have mentioned that in my video, but I wanted to give it a go with the broken part. By the way, it didn't work.
