Camerata Academica des Mozarteums Salzburg, dir. Sándor Végh (1990)
"On 14 July 1773, Leopold and W.A. Mozart set out on their third journey to Vienna. In his luggage Wolfgang had a commission for a composition for Salzburg, a musical finale for the end of the academic year at Salzburg University in August 1773. Mozart had received this commission from Judas Thaddeus von Antretter, the son of Johann Ernst von Antretter, the chancellor of the province of Salzburg. The result was the Serenade in D major, K. 185 (167a) for 2 oboes, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, and strings: the Antretter Serenade.
Musical finales were performed at the closing celebrations of the academic year of the 'logicians' and the 'physicians.' First, the reigning prince was serenaded, then the professors of the alma mater paridiana. For the parade of the entrance and exit of the students a march was played. In the Antretter Serenade this is the march K. 189 (167b).
The origins of this work can be traced extremely accurately through two letters written by Leopold Mozart. At the end of his letter dated 21 July 1773, Leopold Mozart wrote from Vienna: 'I must close now, because it is time to write a few lines to young Mr. v. Andretter and sent him the first part of the academic festival music.' Then, in a letter dated 12 August 1773, also from Vienna, he states: 'We are glad that the academic festival music proved a success'. Thus, the composition must have been completed at the beginning of August and first performed a few days later under the direction of the court minstrel, Joseph Nikolaus Meißner, but in the absence of the composer. For this reason, Leopold Mozart's letter closes with: 'Wolfgang will express his thanks to Herr Meißner.'
The 'Antretter Serenade' is the first example in Mozart's creative work of the multi-movement type of serenade which later became the rule. The allegro introduction with its two themes is followed by a two-movement concertino for solo violin in the third-related key of F major. The second movement with its rondo structure and its switching from solo episode to tutti refrain is similar to the last movement of a concerto, and one may suppose that, after it, there was an interval -- perhaps for a short speech, before the music continued with the minuet & trio, in which solo flute and viola go 'colla parte'. Both in the sequence of the movements and in its expression, the andante grazioso forms the nucleus of the serenade, whilst the subsequent minuet with its two trios -- in the first one the violin again has a solo function -- return to the rondo-like style. The final movement begins with a soulful adagio and ends in the 6/8 time of allegro assai with the cheerful serenity appropriate to a serenade." - Gerhard Walterskirchen - Видеоклипы
I rember those serenades and divertimenti when I was young and discoering Mozart and the clasical music. Now I am 67 years old and find much pleasure in hearing this again. Just like the old days.
Had the same experience. Just a year ago, when my experience with Mozart was only beginning, I was obsessed with his orchestral serenades. Now I look back and smile.
Amazing!
@@simonkawasaki4229 I wonder if that is a common experience for those first discovering Mozart, it was for me, his serenades, divertimenti and dances.
@@thomasmcgorry2176 I guess it's a common feature of all humans' brains and not only with classical music or especially Mozart. We often look with smile back on things we liked.
Mozart's "Antretter" is so beautiful - both in tender & power. Simply a wonderful captivating musical treasure. Sublime & heartfelt.

Now I wonder why I beloved maestro Vegh Sandor adored the great Mozart so much !!! Tepper Michael.
although I love any McKerras releases such as this serenade, maybe it is the sound but this is beautiful and vibrant and this Camerata orchestra is just so pleasing. got to love this version also.
All is well, the second movement is heavenly!
Imafungi123 : never heard a Mozart second movement of any of his works that wasn’t sublime in beauty...
I have uploaded this serenade with score now ruclips.net/video/CecAx36rZLU/видео.html
Sandor Vegh plays a very good sounding and well conducted orchestra with a clear and straight sound. I love his CDs of Mozart serenades. Thanks for uploading of K 185.
He doesn't play it he conducts it. It is a very fine chamber orchestra which I think he founded. What is a clear and straight sound? Vegh was a fine violinist and founded an excellent string quartet which played and recorded the great Mozart quartets. He was a great interpreter of Mozart, whose music he loved.
¡Grande, Mozart!
♫♪ Mozart... as good as always!! ♪♫

I don’t think there is anyone with his sensitivity connecting with Mozart a pleasure for the Ear and senses. Thanks for the posting

So beautifu,a masterpiece!!!🎼🎶🎶 When wrote this Serenade Mozart he was only 17 years old...
Wow
I've never been able to comprehend fully just how a child was able to do what he did. Genes, history and environment of course contributed but his genius somehow reached beyond that.
@@roberthill799 At 17, a musician is not a child. Mozart had already spent 3 years in Italy with his teacher (his father), and had three operas performed. He knew what he was doing.
Linda!!! buen sonido de la orquesta!!!
Mozart’s music must quench the dryness of my soul.

Early works are very innovative as well, many modern listeners fail to realise it. It also contains a contrast of affects.
The painting in the video is 'The New Town Market in Dresden' by Canaletto (Bernardo Bellotto).
Wiped out by allied bombing in Feb. of 1945.
Thanks, I was wondering. I'd never have guessed Canaletto! It reminds me of the Freyung in Vienna, about the same time.
Música de Deus, maravilhoso este Mozart
EN LA PELICULA AMADEUS SALIERI LA CALIFICA COMO LA MISMA VOZ DE DIOS
I particularly like Adagio-Allegro assai. Haters say Mozart's music is too happy, but I think this is more true of these early works - and I for one can't get enough of it. Same with the more upbeat of Bach's inventions / goldberg variations / overtures (pure joy!!!)
The Andante is not particularly happy.
Amadeus- beautiful as always.

Is Végh the solo violinist as well?
omg you're so right Imafungi123
That's an interesting way of putting it, but as a conductor myself I don't agree. It is not usual and not correct to refer to a conductor as playing an orchestra. It is vastly different from an instrument. The conductor guides the orchestra , he does not play it.
Oh lawdy lawd that’s good
L ' Assoluto.
waths up with the final march? that is not part of the serenade.
It says K189, so the final march is an addendum.
+Vivaldi_rocks Indeed, sometimes the performers would enter and/or leave with a March. If there wasn't one in the score, plenty were around for the borrowing. It would be considered authentic to use K189 for both entry and exit march.
+656520 As it says up above in the description, K189 was played as the students marched in and out of the ceremonies.
@@AML2000 Er, no. First it had to be played for the Prince-Archbishop in his summer residence across the river. Then the band had to march back to the university and play the whole thing again for the professors. It was an honour, from the graduating students.
@@anne-louiseluccarini4530 I was referring to what is written in the description by the original poster: "Musical finales were performed at the closing celebrations of the academic year of the 'logicians' and the 'physicians.' First, the reigning prince was serenaded, then the professors of the alma mater paridiana. For the parade of the entrance and exit of the students a march was played. In the Antretter Serenade this is the march K. 189 (167b)." As you can see, the march has a different K number to the serenade that was played at the archbishop's residence, which is K 185. I personally make no guarantee either way!

The early serenades were what REALLY cemented my love for Mozart, this piece being among the many examples. However, they can be REALLY boring pieces if led by a boring director. Sandor Vegh is quite literally the OPPOSITE of boring!! Just the right amount of "kick"!
I cannot stand Claude Debussy for some reason.
Villie Stephanov : Claire de Lune a nice tune...other than that...
I get the impression that you're antediluvian.
Fine. Now why would you post that under a work of Mozart's?
Please consider, that a condutor "plays" an orchestra, the orchestra is his "instrument".
Xylophilia
Yeah well maybe, but except for modern conductors.
I agree that the conductor's instrument is the orchestra, but good instruments are made of good materials! If the musicians are not good I would like to see if the best conductors would take a sound like this!
mica de salzburgo ?
When Mozart wrote this, there were no conductors. The leader (concertmaster) led from his place among the first violins.
@@anne-louiseluccarini4530 That may be so, but today it's different.
