- Pretty self explanatory video, make sure you check my prior one below that shows a simple diagnosis. I was 100% sure this mower was hydrolocked and was prepared to swap another block onto it.

I live on an island off north carolina. my entire house was flooded a long with my belongings. I found a Toro push mower on the side of the road and this video was exactly what was wrong with it and now I have a push mower again. thank you so much for this video
hurricane Matthew
wow man that sucks bigtime... sorry to hear that, I hope your insurance covered what was lost
hanksranger nope I live in a flood zone insurance would only cover if my upstairs flooded. so lost everything downstairs garage ex.. but could have been worse it's all good now
POLO tv .
Briggs are darn good engines, always have been.
for sure, these particular briggs are actually my fav of their motors. Simple, cheap parts, reliable, and the design has been around for decades in some form or another.
I've picked up several push mowers that people over fill and think that the mower is in bad shape , but good for my resaleing .
Thanks for the great video, learning here.
you make working on shit look easy
Vulgora You can do it too man, it aint too bad
carb stuff slows me down
Tipped my mower over the Wrong way and left it there too long and it became hydro locked. I removed spark plug and can pull the cord freely and it turns the blade. Put the spark plug back in and it’s hydro locked again. Next tried draining all gas and oil out along with removing spark plug. It’s all back together and still hydrolocked. It’s abt 13 yrs old and no maintenance prior till now so oil was really black. Has ran like a dream all this time until I messed it up. What are my next steps?
Leave it with the cylinder facing down and propped up that may help it doesn’t take much to do it
Good video Hank♥
Ok, I have a Murray Model 225111X99A, SN 7535032431BB244. 2004 I believe. I don't have the motor info handy (the mower is at another location as I write this) but the engine is a 4.75 HP B & S. The problem appears to be gas delivery through the pickup tube to the tank. One of the bolts holding the gas tank and carb onto the engine seems to be locked, so I was trying to remove the carb off the top of the tank. The Philips screws came out easily, but something inside the tank appears to be keeping the carb from pulling off after I remove those carb-to-tank screws. The carb comes up about .3 inch and then hard stops. I don't think the linkage to the governor is the problem. Is there some sort of large foot (filter?) in the tank on the end of the pickup tube? Ideas on how I get just the carb pulled off? I hate to have to drill out the bolt mentioned above.
Thats almost as oily as my 97 Neon :P
I have a mower that it shoots thick white smoke whenever it runs, and always has a layer of oil on the piston. The cylinder is fine, is it the rings?
Sounds like rings to me could be the PCV system in the motor is plugged up
Hank's Small Engine Repair the pcv always blows off the carburettor so i will try and clean it. Thanks
yup check that whole system, that pcv line goes into a cover on the side of the block I believe, pull that off and you will have access to the valve springs, may be some debris in there or something Ive never had that particular issue before
Hi i finally see the same lawnmower i have and i hope u can help me with my problem. After i changed my carburator to a new one, changed diagram, changed sparkplug, changed air filter, new blade and also new putting new oil. Now im thinking i have just like new lawnmower but now when i start the lawnmower im getting really high RPM. Can anyone help me what to do next. Thanks
+scorpiontube712 You need to connect the butterfly valve, there is a spring that should attach from the butterfly valve to the front of the gas tank, see if you can google some pics of it for how it connects
+hanksranger theres only one spring that connect there and its already connected by following the old one
There are 2 styles.. ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/mr2cycle/2012-05-05_215258_10t_gov.jpg
or this one...

+hanksranger yeah mine was the first picture with 1 spring. I stalled a new spring and got connected like it showed on that picture. Another thing i was thinking is that I probably received a wrong spring!!! Thanks for quick respond
My troy bilt push mower Sony got compresesion and got rust in valve case why want it start
A key question, how much oil goes I. the average push mower.
+kevin mccarthy typically Briggs take 20oz hondas are less
How do you know if it's too much compression or if it's hydro locked?
+The Broyos Gaming it will be really obvious very hard to pull. Best way to know for sure is to take the spark plug out and pull it thru. They aren't really going to have too much compression unless there is fluid such as gas or oil involved.
How to drain oil on toro lawn mower
Thank you!
+titoortiz No problem buddy!
I filter all the old gas i get in my machines, and then i always put it in my gokart (old 3hp briggs)
what kind of oil do you use fir that lawn mower?
Any brand sae 30
I have a Murray 4.75, with the same problem you had with the pulley. There seems to be no oil in the combustion chamber, on the spark plug itself, or coming out of the exhaust. What can I check next. Thanks in advance!
+Raul De Anda is it just not starting what exactly is the issue?
+hanksranger... it started shaking on me, I turned it off, I took off the boot off of the spark plug, and when putting it back in, it wouldn't let me pull it with ease anymore. it was working fine before that. this was just today.
+Raul De Anda Check your blade, might be bent if its a fast shake. If not try cleaning the carb and replacing the gasket, 9 times out of 10 a mower not running right is carb related
Nice vid! but at 1:01 you mentioned that "Fluid does not compress like air does." I know what you meant but technically speaking air it a fluid. I think a better word might have been Liquid. Anyways, I have a 1978 subaru brat and I can remember before I rebuilt the engine and all its accessories that the electronic fuel pump ran off a switch off the dashboard and if I forgot to turn it off at the end of each day the pump would overpower the float needle and fill one or more cylinders with gasoline and hydrolock it. I can remember pulling the plugs and watch it shoot gasoline everywhere.
yeah buddy!!!!
👍👍
That's not the fuel line. The fuel line is internal from the tank straight to the carb. That's the crankcase ventilation
Pretty sure I said it was a pcv line. If not that was what I meant.
8 million videos on when the starter rope will NOT pull out or recoil. However,, have yet to find one about when the starter rope pulls with little or no resistance, recoils fine, but does not engage or start the mower. Shaft not locked up spins ridiculously free, and sounds like someone popping their hand over their mouth.
+Pudangizmo you either have a valve that has let go or rings are worn out excessively. If that recoil is working as it should and your crank is spinning like that the recoil is not the issue.
Thank you, Sir. You're videos are so helpful, just count find anything, anywhere, that dealt with my particular situation. Please continue your broadcasts, and thanks again!
Glad you enjoy them!
“MurRAY” Lol
Lolz
Hank's Garage lol
Probably should have cleaned the exhaust to
No point easier to just let it burn it all off doesn't hurt anything.
the engine is very bad
Must need a time-out.
