Awesome van setup! I've worked hospital Security 5150 patient watches in the past 10 years. I've noticed more vanlifers and car dwellers. Why pay for hotel rooms. When there are showers inside the hospital for staff.👍 I'm 9 months into my vanlife & loving it.
Another great example of the fact that there are so many ways to do the nomad life! If one possesses a “can do attitude” the open road and a “life worth living” await you! Thank you Rich & Brian!!
A thing I was impressed with is he mounted the fire extinguisher and in a location that has easy access to driver, passenger, and if he is in cargo area, easy access from that area. Thank you for including the other safety item, CO detector/alarm. Appreciate info on surgical tech vs nurse. Thanks for going over how much insulation was installed. What was on floor? Nice build.
I love how these videos really shed light to the fact that there are plenty of normal, intelligent and hardworking people who live this way. Less is more and more time is a blessing
I can't imagine having to learn every new surgeon's preferences and manners. This guy is awesome! Great ideas in his van also. Funny thing is that my son has been talking about wanting to do a uhaul build eventually. 😅
People WAKE up and start living !! I asked my boss whether I could work rooster (used to work full time as a truck driver) month on - month off. I fully expected him to tell me to bugger off, low and behold he agreed to (ask you shall receive :) it and now I have every 2nd month off doing motorcycle road trips ( I am a biker). The point is, just like the chap in this video I only work 6 month of the year. Best thing I have ever done - work is overrated, start living.
What a wonderful soul he has, I love his sense of humor. Great build. I love seeing the diversity of these builds. Thank you. Much love and many blessings
Some hospitals will allow a trailer in the parking lot as long as they are not too close to regular parking. Security gets to know you and you can pull it up to a side door or closer to the front at night and use the hospital bathrooms. Some even a shower. Then move it back in the am. Before the next shift and patients need to park.
I am way to afraid to burn any type of Propane heater. I know people do but it scares me. I am only part time however so I just get a site with hookups and plug in a space heater. I like his recent upgrades.
Such an inspiration! I’m a pharmacist and plan on doing contract work as well while traveling in a van/rv. God willing, it will happen within the next 2 years. I’m soooooo looking forward to it. God bless and happy travels 😊
I had a Van and now switched to a small Travel trailer, and an SUV, both have pluses and minuses, I liked the van because it was more stealth and extremely easy to just park and sleep anywhere. But I like the camper for more room and built in AC and heat and Fridge and stove and microwave. I definitely miss the stealthy aspect though.
I think that's the best set up because you have all the amenities of a small apartment that you can move around just about anywhere and you can unhitch your SUV and get around with out a problem.
You can also be a TRAVELING CNA Which is about a 6 week training program & cost around $1200 bucks .. Then you go from nursing home to nursing home OR you could move up & be a HOSP CNA .. & go from Hosp to Hosp! There is a little bit more training I think BUT MOSTLY TO MOVE INTO A HOSP ITS ABOUT EXPERIENCE !!
Hmmm Connecticut + Navy + Mystic stickers on the wall = Groton, SubBase. 😉. I was born on that base 69 years ago and lived the first 45 years in Mystic and Groton. Great guy living his best life. Thank you for spot lighting such great people Bob!
Go Navy! I feel your need to change environments. Retired Navy, sea going rating (MM conventional steam plants) 5 year sea/2~3 year shore. Although stuck in a stick build, I always have the itch. Seems some posts are confused between CO and CO2. 🤷🏼♂️ 🙋🏼
Rich, it's great that your job works so well for you in your van life. I worked for several months at a hospital in New Hampshire as a central sterilization tech-my most hated job ever! 😵💫Who knew there is a gazillion surgical instruments?!?
Travel nurse for Almost 20 years. I worked only 6 mos a year. Spent most of my work life in Alaska and been all over Alaska. Nursing has gotten so bad now…I now have quit. I stopped when CVid hit. The last thing I needed was to get sick so far away from home and family. Housing is typically not paid by companies any longer. They don’t want the responsibility due to so many contracts getting broken. Housing and “tax free subsidies” are actually your pay package….they are just not taxable. And, living in a van does not allow a tax free subsidy allowance. You get the allowance but it is taxed. You have to be duplicating living expenses…meaning sticks and bricks. Id be careful with that ! I’d be a surgical tech over a nurse if I could, honestly!
There are so many different niches you can go into with nursing, and you can always move up with a bit of education. Surg techs don’t have that opportunity, as you know.
That's a PERFECT gig setup, and although nursing offers more options, it also comes with more stress ... If only I could do life over, it would definitely be without a mortgage and the forever expenses that go along with homeownership 😕
Great interview. It makes sense nurse techs can be contract employees too. A couple relatives are nurse techs so I knew exactly what he does for living. Love in Sarasota 🥰🥰🥰
Having solar really is a game changer. We've been in our 30 ft shuttle bus for 2 in a half years and over that time we've been able to build an awesome solar set up. We can use anything we want and it will even power an air conditioner for 6 to 8 hours. Unfortunately almost as soon as we moved into our bus I startimg getting really sick and between July of 2021 and November of 2022 I've had 3 major abdominal surgeries and I've been recovering. Traveling is something that won't be a reality for us for at least another year. We're fortunate that we have an acre of land with a well that we park on. We have free unlimited power and water and a low mortgage payment for the land that will be paid off in November this year. The solar and the well has made it possible for us to live comfortably and that's been very important since I've been so sick. I totally get what he's saying about winter. I grew up in Boston and lived in Ohio for several years and now I live in Southern Nevada. I definitely don't miss the snow. He definitely has a great situation with his job. What a great set up.
Different people need different things. People showing everything they carried helped me figure out what I needed to carry. There are a 1,000 RUclips videos giving reviews on refrigerators and panels.
Cool!! I will be starting a 13 week gig in April. I love traveling. I worked 12 years at the same place and the burnout is horrible!! Moving around it's much easier!! I do MRI and I agree with him.. be a nurse.
You can get a 2 year RN degree in the Illinois community college system. Then work for a hospital that lets you take 6 years to get your bsn. You'll get great experience for travel nursing while working!!!
Great video. I like your builds functionality. I also like how you did it in stages. It must be nice having a career that’s so adaptable. Do Hawaii. So worth it!! You could even rent a van there. I will check out your channel. 😊
Spot on Ritch your sorted! Life is for living. I d love to be Snowbird traveller, but living in Ireland choice generally is straight down or sideways rain. Been trying for ages to get USA 6 mth / year set up to travel round your amazing national parks, but can't figure out how to do it on budget re van minivan insurance. No way can afford to hire for that long. In meantime I ve done whole coast of Ireland, this sounds extensive until you realize how small this country is. This year will do more of uk, great places to see there too ( always with waterproof jacket to hand) All the very best, and thanks once again for great interview and tour to Bobs sidekick, gently becoming more of the host. Shared transition that I hope blesses you both Much love to all x
I always wondered how it would be to live in a U-haul. Where did his head room go & is this a "lost recording " because he said, "...January 2022...?" I hope he's always able to get the scheduled hours he desires. Good video as always.
@Marissa Alonzo No, my reference was to him not being able to stand. In U-hauls it designed for that so people can move boxes or whatever without any difficulties.
awesome interview with a veteran ! Bob's knowledge & experience with living on wheels has inspired me as well ! Bob & I differ on world views & politics .. but have in common views on living on wheels ! I do enjoy that aspect Bob shares ! Everyone has their own opinion / respect is a two way street .. I am not a troll & don't speak animosity & have no axe to grind ! But sure enjoy the freedom living on wheels offers ! Nothing better than a Soul who's new residence is within Christ while in the midst of human life ! That's being Blessed !
We have visiting nurses that camp at our campground in FL at times but that van would never be allowed. They usually have one of those tab type small campers. Great idea to stay in a hospital parking lot! Showers are at the hospital. You have it made! Excellent choice!!
Checking with the indigenous people may have alternative options for living cheaper and helping others with your stay . Thank you for sharing your journey 💞
The certificates are extremely fast paced programs as far as I know. Most people in my area do the non degree path. My coworker did it while we worked together. I used to help her study a bit 😁 so many instruments, so little time 😂
One of my travel jobs I got paid a certain amount each day for a hotel and per deim for food. I saved all that since my grocery bill is about $20 a week. Anyway that is how I paid for my one van just by saving all that money.
Great video! I would love to see traveling teachers, as a special education teacher that loves to travel, and I know there’s a shortage, so maybe there’s something out there?
If there is a shortage I'm sure you could make it work. Just be a temp/sub wherever you choose to go, if there us a shortage than you should always be needed
CO2 monitors should be placed closer to the floor dude! Love his vibe and his ambition. Some day, he will need to find a central location to have a home base and then blast off onto the branches that he has built for himself. When you get to a retirement age you will want a home base paid for, nothing big. Then just keep traveling within the branches to make extra money during your retirement. Just saying...

Rich, it's great that your job works so well for you in your van life. I worked for several months at a hospital in New Hampshire as a central sterilization tech-my most hated job ever! 😵💫Who knew there is a gazillion surgical instruments?!?
Brian put it succinctly: Rich has "figured it out". Thanks for a very informative video.
Thanks for the video! Great job Rich on your rig, and Brian Gifford on the video. Have a great day!
Great idea Rich about a small Toy Hauler, my similar thoughts also!, only for dirt bike, shower set up, toilet, kitchen sink, & cooking facilities!
What method of installation is used for the foam padding? Screws, glue, Velcro?
Thank the Navy for that awesome training you can use once you've served. My Navy training was mostly useless once I got out.

Pool noodles for toilet seat. Cheap and comfortable

YES, pool noodles work great & easily replaceable for a dollar on sale in fall 🖖🏻😉👍🏻
Thank you, sir, for your service in Navy.
Great video on thinking outside the box to work and live affordably. Nice rig, and work and fun life style, Rich. Thanks.
Thoroughly enjoyed the vid. Just a good example of a guy doing life a simpler way. And thanks for mentioning Bob W for his influence & ideas. GBY

You can get a surgical tech certificate in 9 months or a degree in 2 years. This is a great interview. Thanks for posting it.

Thank you for the video. Blessings to you.
He is absolutely right about becoming a nurse. One more year of education buys you MANY more options.
That’s called a circulating nurse in Uk
Really great questions, but I’m curious what he does for Healthcare Insurance when he’s not working for those 3 months. Thanks so much!
Probably has something thru the company he works for. Typically traveling nurses/techs contract with a company who finds the jobs for them.
One of my travel jobs I got paid a certain amount each day for a hotel and per deim for food. I saved all that since my grocery bill is about $20 a week. Anyway that is how I paid for my one van just by saving all that money.

I so wish I had been a nurse instead of a science teacher. So yes, great advice.
As a burned out RN who recently quit my job and moved into a van, at this point I so wish I had been a science teacher or a lot of other things. The co2 sensor should be closer to the floor. Co2 Gas is heavier than air:) keep safe and many miles.
You are absolutely correct in that carbon dioxide (co2) is heavier than air, however the interior safety sensor is for carbon monoxide (co) which is slightly lighter than air.
