i agree with you the 2003 is also my favorite in the franchise. the beginning i thought was a decent prequel. i just thought they should of continued after the 2003 film with the Hewitt storyline and what happened with him. the cinematography in the 2003 remake is possibly my favorite in cinema history. combination of the look and how the shots were set up. the beginning i felt kept that same look as the 2003 which is one of the things i liked about that.

      @spinecraft1356 2 года назад +3

That's one of the things I didn't like. It's like they felt that all the minutia of the 2003 film needed an introduction. Like, what are the odds that Ermey's "sheriff" lost his teeth just 4 years earlier (entirely possible, I know, but who cares about that detail)? And wouldn't it have been creepier if he _really was_ the sheriff, like this sparsely populated county in central Texas is so provincial and inbred that this sadist is the appointed keeper of the law here? I also think it would have been more believable and interesting if the uncle (?) had lost his legs in either WWII or the Korean War. I know Ermey appeals to Leatherface to do the deed, but it doesn't even seem in alignment with Leatherface's character to deliberately harm his own kin like that. Just my two cents but I respect your opinion.

This is one of my favorite Texas Chainsaw movies. R Lee Ermey again steals the show, and Leatherface is good as well. I think there should be a movie based solely around R Lee Ermey/Sheriff Hoyt. The movie is brutal, graphic, and holds nothing back with gore. It's what I think a TCM movie should be: uncomfortable. In general, I like how they explain the origins for things in the remake. The one thing that doesn't make sense is Monty losing his legs. He was shot in one leg, so Hoyt and Leatherface decide to amputate BOTH of his legs, presumably to prevent infection or something. However, Leatherface amputates them using the chainsaw that he JUST USED to saw a guy in half. He doesn't clean it off or anything. That would cause more infection issues than anything. Besides that, I love The Beginning. It's my 3rd or 4th favorite movie behind the '74 and '03 movies and tied with TCM2.

Nice review man, I enjoyed this one maybe a little more than you but definitely not as much as 2003's remake. But I honestly think it's one of the greatest prequels you could get. People might hate me for saying this, but I prefer these 2 installments over the rest of the franchise. The original and Tcm 2 were good for the time but now they honestly just feel dated at this point. Especially when you compare them to the remake and The Beginning.

Now this is the 1st movie of the series that i watched! Juat finished (told these other comments before seeing it) and i gotta say that i'm impressed! I think they did a really good job with explaining how Leatherface got to be in a cannibal family, Sherrif Hoyth etc. I really love how they nailed the 60/70's atmosphere, you really feel that, and that the movie focuses more on Thomas than Leatherface.... How he got his first mask and acctually seeing him making it, some really strong amount of gore, carnage, and the characters were really likable, wven if they wwre definetly not the best i saw! Amd i liked that whole interaction between them, keeps thing simple like "Soldiers in Vietnam" and u think the acting is really amazing! But, as you said, it's just an origin story, but one that is VERY well done! I really need to see the remake, i hear a lot of positive feedback on it, but i think that, even if i didn't saw both, give the edge to the very original! Overall, pretty good movie that awnsers some questions and makes sense, some likeable characters but that's pretty much it! My main focus are this one, the remake and the original (and maybe Leatherface 2017)

  • @Horrormaster13

Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning is a mediocre Horror Movie. Don't get me wrong the Gore, the Kills and the overall Violence in that one is great. Even better than in the Remake. But the problem that this movie has is that its screenplay is completely lacking of substance.
The great R. Lee Ermey brings a solid performance and he gives some points to the film. The movie bored me through some time and that's a big problem. The characters are all clichés. I don't give a shit about anyone of the characters in this film.
The film really fails to capitalize on its prequel nature too. Leatherface is already a killer at the beginning of the film, Sheriff Hoyt doesn't take very long to start killing either, and the rest of the family just happily follows along. So, these people are just nuts or what?! And the ending of the movie is just terrible.
In a nutshell, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning is just OK for me.

I saw this movie on FX when I was just 13 years old and it honestly just…confused me. It didn’t scare me, it didn’t gross me out, it just confused me. The whole time I was asking myself “what exactly is the point here? What did I learn from this???” Because there’s nothing important that was explained. All we get is how leatherface got his chainsaw and first mask, how Uncle Monty lost his legs, how the “sheriff” got his clothes… that’s it. So what was the purpose of the movie aside from making money???

  • @darrenyoung3102

I did wonder how the sheriff lost his teeth, so the fact that it answered that worked for me, also how the uncle lost his legs, I absolutely did wonder how he had lost his legs from watchin the 2003 remake, so to have that shown in this movie was awsome. So I do think this movie was way better than I expected because it touched on even smaller details from the first.
My biggest thumbs up for this movie has to be the score , the music to this movie especially opening credits still makes my spine tingle, one of my favourite horror movie scores

Finally got around to watching it.....and it's a solid horror flick. Having good villains can really carry a movie and that's what R. Lee Ermey and Andrew Bryniarski did here. They were both awesome!
Definitely agree about it feeling a bit "rushed". It didn't feel so much like an origins story as much as it did just another rehash of the 1974 and 2003 versions where they skipped over a couple of decades and fast-forwarded right to their go-to formula - young adults getting lost in the Texas countryside and getting butchered by Leatherface.
Still had fun with it though.

Eric Hernandez me too, never made sense to me how leatherface got to the car before she did and how she didn’t see his big ass body in the backseat. Or hear his breathing or feel his presence. I like that they didn’t let any survivors like they usually do, but how they killed her was stupid.

This one is near and dear to my heart because I had the basic cable growing up and they would always play this on mtv so I loved watching it. It was so gory even for tv and I loved that so much. The 2003 remake is better but this one is sufficient in my opinion.

This one is my favourite in the whole series. It's dark, gritty and has seriously good kill scenes.
I also absolutely love the fact that instead of the characters being picked off one by one, they are all aware of the danger early on so the tension for them is there and builds more and more as they try to figure ways out of the situation, keeping the momentum building.
I also just feel the flow of the film really works, pacing was great and I felt genuinely interested in both the family and the protagonists.

Totally agree with you on this one Cody. It's ok. It's a good one for the gore hounds, and it's an ok movie. It was made at the time when movies like Saw and Hostel were good box office, which definately had an influence on this one. It's big positive is that you can watch this, and then watch the remake straight after and it's seamless.

The beginning was a big step down from the excellent remake they did. I loved the return of Sheriff Hoyt and the demented Sawyer family but it was a bit of a mess of a film and very forgettable. I don't understand the fandom of this instalment and wasn't aware it had any. Oh, well each to their own.

This was just put on Netflix here in Canada so I watched it again. Skipped through posts of it that were slow out angling, and was furious at the characters for making dumb decisions. But it wasnt bad. Good gore. I like the 2003 one better though. 6/10

  • @jonnymalcs8396

Personally, I really enjoyed this film. I LOVE the original but I also rate the remake and the prequel just as highly, albeit for slightly different reasons.
I don't understand the really poor reviews that the critics give this installment on the mainstream websites. To be honest, I don't think that they actually 'get' the TCM franchise.
What makes the franchise scary for me, is that there is the possibilty of this actually happening. I love the fact that these two films lay down the history of the Hewitt family in butchery and livestock, this makes MASSIVE sense to me.
I think the cinematorgraphy is solid and I love the fact that *spoiler* nobody survives this particular movie (it makes sense).
Leatherface is perfectly represented in the sense that he is brutish, driven and an immovable force. I also believe that when he is pictured wearing his latest mask (Eric), his character looks more disturbing that in any other movie in the francise.
I love this film because the characters enforce their virtues throughout without reward. This, for me, is the true horror of the potential of running into a family like the Hewitt / Sawyer / Slaughter.
