Though where we diverge is my Pixel 3 ended-up getting mostly replaced by an iPhone as well. (I do still use both, but not to the extent I anticipated.)
I don’t mind some of the missing phone features because they are actually present on the iPad, such as multitasking in iPadOS feels more like how it does on Android, while there’s no option for multi-app views on iPhone. And I find some of the integration very useful.

I've been using Samsung for my entire life and got used to the android ecosystem. Recently when I got my new job in a bigger pool of people, I noticed that most of them preferred iOS. After watching this video, it made sense. However, as much as iPhones are always succeeding with how they make things more simple and easier, with good stability- android it making such good improvement these days that it makes harder for people like me to decide whether to try the iOS for a change. Know that if you do try iOS that you'll be giving up all the customizability that Samsung offers. Now me myself have been a user of Samsung products for years and recently have gone to an iPhone and can actually say, it's a lot nicer. Yes it doesn't have the customizability of a Samsung, but after switching I've realized that all that customizability is basically just a gimmick. The iPhone just seems to work perfectly for everything I want to do and on top of that the battery lasts way longer than the bigger battery devices that Samsung puts out like the s22 ultra. Oh yeh...and magsafe.... I don't think I can live without magsafe anymore. Yes for my previous Samsung and Android devices I got a magsafe case, but those cases usually just made the phone bulkier and heavier unless of course you shelled out money for the more expensive pitaka aramid fiber case. I have the 14 pro and the eSim thing is a bit of a let down because for years I've had a habit of switching to different Android devices quick and easy, and now it seems I'm stuck, but I guess if I'm stuck, then better to be stuck on a good device than one I'm never going to be satisfied with, which is basically how I've always been with all Android phones... I just never felt any satisfaction with them, like they were missing something. Oh and the accessories like the Apple Watch and the airpods pro 2s....they are great... The Apple watch series 7 with AOD on lasts me a whole lot longer than the Samsun watch ever did with AOD on. And the airpods.... God they are just so much more comfortable in my ear that I can wear them all day long and forget they're in there whereas the Samsung buds always irritated my ear canal after only an hour of use, same with the Pixel buds. Yeh just sharing with you my personal experience from switching to iPhone from Android.

    • @EpisodeAnon27

@Taz D Thank you for sharing your experiences with me. I had a friend who shifted from a Samsung Flip phone to iPhone 14 mini, so I took a look at it too. It felt good in the hand and is simple. Still, it wasn't as appealing enough for me. Not because it lacks customization or anything, but I do actually prefer the things that I can do with android phones. Plus, I have Samsung Tab S7+ with me, and it syncs the best with Samsung S21 Ultra too. I write a lot of notes with my phone, so I guess unless iPhones will have features like those, it's going to get hard for me to switch to any other phones at the moment. ( ´_ゝ`)

@@hobbitpsi As an avid user of both ios and android and flip flopped, currently using a Pixel 6A, this is what I try to answer when people talk about customizability. The vast majority of people never actually make the most of all the little toggles and features, and iPhone in recent years has made customizing easier too. The benefit of Apple is that everything just works. It's functional, and fluid, and you stop thinking about how you use it. Whereas I find that with Android you have to often think or wonder how to make something function. Apple just does it.
There's definitely a lot of good to Android, but the fluidity between an iPhone and Macbook and iWatch for productivity purposes makes it just so so good. I think they have ups and downs from when Android is sometimes a little more on top, and sometimes Apple is, just use what feels natural and best to you. No need to start wars between the two.

I’m much the same way. I used Android for a decade, largely to be able to tweak and tinker. I loved custom ROMs, and form factors like hardware keyboards, specialised camera buttons, larger screens, push notifications, etc.
After I started noticing I was hardly tinkering anymore, the hardware became more and more iPhone-like, and with iOS closing the gap in software features; I wondered if I was really getting anything from Android anymore. Especially as I was getting more and more annoyed with sporadic bugs (and updates which changed things for no real reason).
For instance, the very best swiping performance ime was 2012-2014 Google Keyboard. It was slowly downhill, but got faster after it became Gboard. Wherein they removed a lot of features (having more than 3 word options to pick between, for one), the accuracy went way down, and it started trying to be too smart for its own good.
Ultimately I ended up switching back to iOS (my first smartphone was an iPhone 3GS) in early 2021. Homescreen widgets and the app drawer were the final thing keeping me from doing so.
On one hand I’m a little sad losing that excitement of the new and shiny, but on the other hand it’s nice to just have a reliable tool that does what I needed to when I need it to with no fuss! I’m no longer fighting with my phone to get it to behave properly. No one claims to have called to no answer when my phone did nothing, anymore. Important email notifications aren’t missed anymore.
I suppose that’s just part of growing up. I don’t use beta software on my daily devices anymore either, whereas when I was a teen I couldn’t imagine holding-on to an older version, if a beta with New Features(!) was available. I value reliability and repeatability too much now.

@@kaitlyn__L Nice to see another long-time "flashaholic" here.
Like you, my first touch device was from Apple, the iPod Touch 2G. But that was 12 years ago. For the past 8 years I've been a committed Android user, and the sport of flashing custom ROMs became a niche side hobby for me.
While I still see the fecundity in Android, you're absolutely right about Android losing its past charm, and for me it was the software. IMO since android 12, it has lost all the things that made the OS previously so great, such as a mature and consistent user interface. Material design was clearly the more superior design language over whatever "language" Material You uses. Now that Google has decided to dumbify its interface, I might as well pick iOS instead as it's the more polished of the "dumbified" interfaces.
Nevertheless, I still flash custom ROMs to this day, but yeah it was never the same as it used to be. Nothing beats my first experience flashing CM12.1 on my very first Android device, the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0".
I definitely respect your choice of switching to an iPhone. Android still has its quirks such as missed notifications.
For me, the idea of "switching" is largely irrelevant, because I'd personally just use both ecosystems. I have like 4 main Android phones, two of which are daily drivers. If I invest in an iPhone it's just gonna be one of my two daily drivers, the other being an Android.
So yeah, why not have the best of both worlds. Have an iPhone for reliability and also an Android for the inner "tinkerer/flashaholic" within you.

Perhaps no coincidence then that eSIM-only has started out also in the US models - Another small obstacle to discourage thoughts of its user-base stepping outside the eco-system to go with the other existing small obstacles can't hurt in the near-term.

Yeah, e-sim sucks but for someone like me (who lost/got stolen 2 phones when blackout drunk) it could be beneficial. Then again some flagship Android phones have that option too. I am going with e-sim on my next phone, until then I will stick to drinking large amounts of alcohol from time to time at home. Losing your phone is hell.

@@jackwilson5542 the main thing is Android and iPhone have both supported it for a long time, if you actually felt it would benefit you. If I set a timer or put a password I will figure out a way around it or disable it once I’ve had enough torment. I have to consciously vote to not use my phone. You nailed it on the head there with the ending. I switched from Android to iPhone, currently with a 12 Pro and most likely going to grab a 14 Pro Max. Android drew me in because of it's many different customization features and form factors. They are fun to tinker with! But at the end of the day I realized I needed reliability. And unfortunately I wasn't getting that from the many devices I burned through. So I switched to the iPhone. I saw it was a useful tool for my business. And that it definitely is. It's so premium feeling, and reliable. All of the software issues and reliability issues I had with Android are no longer a problem. The camera is so dang good, and reliable. Video is unmatched. Apps are just so much better on this side of the pond. It just seems like everything works better for me. Yes I miss some of the openness/customization but honestly, it was a sacrifice I had to make. This isn't to say this is the right decision for everyone, some people don't need the level of consistency that I demand. But I don't regret my decision one bit. I'd like to play with a folding phone one day, but it probably won't be anytime soon

@@nttwashere for a long time I considered iPhones to be very boring and lacking when compared to some of my older galaxy phones, to me Samsung had a lot more to offer, recently Apple has closed that gap. I found that Apple had multiple devices that I could use with my iPhone to make things more convenient, example..apple tv , when I have to type in a password or something my phone automatically prompts me to use it to type by opening the keyboard. My Apple Watch unlocks my iPhone and MacBook for me. When I have safari or messages opened on my Mac I can jump over to my iPhone or iPad if I have to run to the bathroom to dump out and continue there, instead of bringing my Mac into the bathroom. These are all examples of how the Apple ecosystem makes things convenient. If all these Apple products weren’t available I’d probably still have a galaxy phone.

I bought a Note 20 Ultra at the end of 2020 which didn’t last more than 3 months before I went back to my iPhone XS and then at the end of 2021 I bought a Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra which lasted 6 months before I switched back to iPhone with the 13 Pro. It was fun to try some of the techy, nerdy things that you can do with android and I still reminisce about the Xiaomi at times but overall, the iPhone is so much more functional for the core functions that I need my phone to perform. I’ll probably get another android in the future just to try it out, I am a tech nerd after all, but I doubt it will ever get to the level of functionality and polish of iOS.

But I don’t like things like how iMessage is practically useless if your service isn’t good enough, or how Android apps get flat out dropped in support over iPhone as it doesn’t incentivize competition or compatibility across platforms, as someone who dailies an iPhone.

It's both. eSIM can also prevent people from switching to the iPhone or - like in your case kinda - preventing people from upgrading to the newer models. I would even argue that it's probably more of a problem for Apple instead of helping them locking people since Android manufacturers will DEFINITELY follow Apple soon and then it won't be an issue in the first place. Maybe not with the S23 but the S24 will 99% be eSim only.
