Among hitting catchers, he was amazing. However, Piazza wasn't a very good defensive player. His one weakness throughout his career was throwing runners out at second. Every time someone tried to steal against Piazza, it was almost a guarantee that he wasn't going to get them.
Anyone care to guess what would have gone down if Clemens had to bat against someone like Nolan Ryan or Seaver after hitting one of their player in the head? It wouldn't be pretty.
Remember the game when Clemens threw the piece of the broken bat towards Piazza. I did not understand what is the problem of Clemens then, I still don't understand it today.
Steroids can make you very angry. Also b s. When Clemens said he thought it was the bull. If that were true why throw the " ball" at piazza rather than to 1st base.
Dodger's worst trades ever were a tie between Mike Piazza and Pedro Martinez. They came up together in 1992 with the Dodgers and then proceeded to have long and productive careers with other teams. Had we kept them, we could have won a WS or two in the Nineties.
Estes missed him on purpose. He admitted it years later. The Mets crushed Clemens in that game. In fact Estes actually hit a Home Run off of Clemens in that game.
There's a reason Mike Piazza is in the hall of fame. He was a humble player that played by the rules, clemmons is not in the hall because he was the exact opposite of Mike Piazza. On a side note I would've loved to see Mike Piazza catch for Randy Johnson.
Piazza: why did you throw the bat at me? Clemens: “I thought it was the ball” Media: why did you take steroids? Clemens: well... I thought it was the ball
Piazza has owned Clemens, but in Game 2 of 00 WS it was a different story. In that game Clemens threw 8 IP 2 Hits 0 R. The only time they came close to scoring was Lenny Harris almost hit a HR, but it just turned. Anyone who doesn't believe me can look it up.
