Classic devaluing narcissistic behavior. He begins his period of devaluing Maddy and rewriting history/the narrative of his relationship with her and how loyal she was in order to idealize Cassie. The funny thing is that while he sets Cassie up to give to him and be his perfect thing to control, she makes it too easy in his mind. With Maddy, the game for him is being able to take and he likes that power dynamic more. Someone who fights back until he can successfully break them. He doesn't really like it 'easy'. He gets off on the fight, for the possession he thinks he owns to fight back just a little/thinking they are finally free until he can shut it down and let them know who is in control. The whole Russian roulette scene is him setting up a situation for Maddy to try and hold her own until he can take any power she might have gained from again.
