I do think the Terminators REALLY need an update. Cataphractii are supposed to be notably massive and the new models with the old Terminators does show their age.
@@PeteOfDarkness I feel like it's GW's choice how fast or slow they could make this happen. It's definitely possible to keep getting other armor Mk kits and one for Terminators if they decide to make it a priority at some point. But it's possible they want to avoid some cross sales competition with other of their kits for 40k? Idk. Just would love to have the Terminators soon and most definitely also the other armors.
My only concern is that as all the new MKIII and MKVI kits have the exact same leg and torso poses just a different "skin" that they will still all look the same. If you have 30 MKIII and 30 MKVI you only have 5 unique poses over all 60 minis. GW could at least have mirrored the MKIII compared to the MK VI.
As a Word Bearers player, my army is a diverse mix of conversions as it is; my oldest work may get retired as I replace them with newer stuff (my skills have improved dramatically over the last decade 😅) but I don't feel like I need to restart the army, and am continuing to build new units with old kits and mixing them in. Every unit is already a little different (or a lot different), here's another knob to turn!
Man I wish that you would have done a full no stress tutorial on the new mk3 for the three themes in this video. So satisfying seeing you tackle this kit and your thoughts. I know we have tutorials for the themes but so nice seeing this kit come to life. Could have watched this for an hour 😆
Personally, mk III and VI are some of my favourite designs. The mk III in particular looks brutal with that helmet look. The plates also give a very unsubtle look that fits well with space marines. Love the idea you showed with the White Scar of making the segments on the back of the legs metallic. Sets up the idea that most of the armour is front-facing.
Your recipe for painting Sons of Horus green was a game changer to me (though I use a lighter, more pale color for the highlight). I dunno why but it's such a hard color to do... I guess cause it's so easy to mess up. It can either be too green and look like Salamanders, too blue and look like Space Wolves, or too grey and look like Deathguard... There's this middle ground that is hard to hit, but once you do it's such an amazing scheme.
Whatever you end up deciding to do with your army- keeping it or adding to it, your work with the White Scars inspired me to begin a Heresy force of Scars and I use a lot of the stylization you chose for the box set. I am very grateful for you showing me that white doesn't have to be scary to paint, and ironically, I chose Skullcrusher Brass for their trim.
Whilst I'm currently committed to the Warmaster's legion, the metal back leg plates of the White Scar MKIII are unexpected and chef's kiss. Tempting...
as someone who just started heresy more this year, I started to upscale the older kits beforew these released and it really does help blend the old and new styles of kits.
The slight difference in size did bug me to begin with but when you see a whole group of the different armour marks together, it doesn't show too much. What I've done is to ensure that my Alpha Legion army only uses the original Mark III and IV kits, the new Mark VI kit is for my Raven Guard and these new boys will probably be for something new.
I've been a bit half-and-half on the new MKIII, but seeing them with a good paintjob and with some headswaps has definitely gotten me onboard with them a lot more. Excellent work as per usual!
Very much enjoyed this, and as an Iron Warriors collector I'm very excited for the new Mk3! For me, the plan is to use them for heavy support squads. I built all my line troops using the existing MkIII kit with the idea that when they released a new version that was compatible with the weapon upgrades I would do my "heavy marines" using those. Kind of isolate the scale creep to one element of the army.
I think the cataphractii terminators look pretty good next to those mk3/6, definitely holding up better than some other old models. Their scale is probably closer to being correct than the new 40k terminators would be, since those are scaled to be bigger than primaris marines.
For my most recent Heresy army, I had split up an Age of Darkness box to do Sons of Horus, and decided that I wanted to bulk out the troops with a box of MK4 to go with the beakies and Praetor, but didn't want them to look too small so I just put a little greenstuff blob in each torso joint, so on a shelf or the table they are not nearly as noticeable as being short. Not perfect but it cleans up nice. Now for my older armies of Iron Warriors where MK3 kits of yore abound pre me learning what Green stuff is, I don't know if I can deal with the difference. But man these kits are nice, so I might do it anyway because I love my Iron Warriors.
Lovely to see this style of EC scheme, though I've only followed one guy on instagram who does anything similar, it's great to see this both pop and blend in. In the final group shot I admired them all but noticed my eyes mostly going to the Iron Hand and the new Son of Horus. I know there were other old (and new) mk 3s there but the unapologetically chunky older helmet really suits that Iron Hand, but I can also see it's a bit big, or would be on the new kit even more so. Beyond that I'll join the chorus of fans saying the new kit's grown on me from what I've seen, and we'll see what some add on kits might bring, haha. They'll probably just do heads and shoulders, but some chest add ons might be nice (especially if we get new Maximus armour in the coming years, if the molds permit much converting in the first place)
The new helmets are growing on me. I like that it actually looks like someone’s head could look out of it. The eye skit on the old kit feels very high on the face. I do wonder if GW picked a divisive design to promote resin helmet upgrades though.
I think the design is based on a cartoon vision of the franchise. They're drawing from the cartoony card game art pieces from Visions of Heresy. I love that book. But it is not what I want to see realised in plastic. The FW resin sculpts were superior in everyway, except scale. I absolutely do not like the soft, round, and 'chonky' theme theyre going for now. It feel childish and cartoony.
@@jamesespinosa690totally agreed! They will do same with the Tartaros and Cataphractii also and then horus heresy for me is done and cashed in by games workshop.
Really, really love this scheme, excited for my Battlegroup to arrive in the mail. I used the same art as inspiration, wish my end product had looked this good! Can't wait to paint up a bunch of MKIII veterans and breachers!
Very tempted to buy the box set, I already have a old resin mk2 & 3 iron warrior force from the old fw kits, cost me an arm and a leg too . Not sure wether to update my iron warriors far better painted now or star a new legion quite like ultramarines or do Luna wolves in there bone white .
I’ve only recently gotten back into the hobby, around August last year and that’s where I picked up the AoD set and chose SoH after being inspired by DornsArrow and his scheme. This new kit I originally really disliked after picking up and working on some original MK III plastic. However, this video has given me a new perspective. The heresy inherently would have many variations of the common armour amongst the legions due to supply chain issues, constant attrition etc. I think having some of each would make for a great looking force! Great video and thanks for all the amazing tips along the way.
This might be the first time I've liked the vents on the backpacks. Something about the chunkier look works better for me The helmets seem like a decent enough redesign, though the reduced size and the spike seem a bit off. Overall, I'm really happy to see the mkIII updated.(Though, if I'm being honest, I was really hoping to see MkII instead or even mkIV) Might try one of the old mkIII helmets on the new body to see if that's actually my biggest gripe with the overall kit
Can you do one of the most Battle damaged marine I've seen like really fuck it up like his beem a war for a decade or two. Iwould like to see you take on it
Having just built my infantry to my army, I really, really wish GW made it clearer those are GUIDING TABS and not gate nubs. Shaving them off makes to some increased posing options, but I had zero idea otherwise that was their intention. Cheers for pointing it out, lovely paintwork.
I'm actually quite surprised by the amount of dislike this new kit has, as a regular gw critic myself. (Current chaos raptors are a hideous mess compared to the previous iteration for example) I think the new Mk3 looks absolutely phenomenal. Design updates give the world a chance to expand a bit more also in retrospect, attributing different armour styles to different sections of the galaxy and whatnot.
I have armor autism too. My only cannon explanation is going to be make my old figs Dark Angels, and have them be smaller as they represent the Calibanite Knights who were to old to fully become marines.
Finally got my hands on these today, quite supprised by how mini they are, i think the heads sit quite low down making them shorter than other similarly sized marines.
I quite like this rendition of the MKIII, I won't ever be using the helms (and from the sounds of it many others won't be either) but overall I'm keen to get these kits into my next legion project. My current Iron Warriors though will stick with the old school smaller MK3 as they are almost finished as an army project.
personally, I love mixing armor marks in squads, so when I add these to my units it doesn't really have an effect because some are larger, some are smaller but together they look good
I think it’s a bit weird how much people seem to cling to the old design. Love this new kit, only thing is the spikes on the helmets, but easy enough to fix. Not sure what to use them for, really tempting to get the box and do a whole new legion. But I think I’ll wait and work out what to use the mk3 for in my world eaters
Love the change tbh, learnt their lesson with primaris and didn’t update everything with a whole new type of unit and instead they were willing to be way more aggressive with the design change and that’s great for me
Lovely chunky boys, they dropped right when I thought about starting Iron Warriors army (got Kratos, some Rhinos and pair of Predators). Terminators being bit small are not a problem because I want to run mine as Iron Tyrants. I think older versions of those marks (III & IV) could be used to mix and match (and also "truscale") into Heresy patterns? Or Inductii (aren't those scrub Marines?)
Yo if your going to do pre Primarch legions, could you consider doing a Dusk Raider? That's what the Death Guard were before Morty renamed them and they were really cool.
I know people have large existing armies, but these would interested me a lot more if GW had unified the scale with modern 40k Marines. Just rip the plaster off and make all Marines Primaris scale.
What colour would you recommend for the backs of the legs on the Ultramarines? Black is a bit rare for their usual colour schemes, and white or gold might look too much..
Looking good! In regards to having the different scales in the army, I see no problem with it at all. I'm taller than my mate. People are different sizes, the space marines would be the same
Honestly, in person (in regards to MkVI compared to the old models) and on video with the examples provided here, the differences don't look bad and wouldn't look weird on a table top between 2 different armies. That being said, I wouldn't want to mix old and new MkIII in the same army. I do agree that the differences are too much in those regards.
I was concerned when the mk3 first came out about the helmet, but its since grown on me as time has gone by. I was definitely concerned that the helmet looked alittle too much like mk2 and was wondering how gw would differentiate them for a mk2 update. Recently i realized they technically already did a partial update in the form of the gunners on the new spartan/ land raider proteus. If that armor does turn out to be the updated version then i think the armor pieces will look different enough to add variety to ur hh army
I like the new more true scale proportions, but I feel like they made some mistakes on some parts. Heads seem too small, as do the vambraces. And the shoulder pads seem very oversized.
If the old stuff is resin, would it be fairly easy to snap off the lower part of the body (if they're seperate like they used to be) and build it up slightly so they don't look so squat?
The Emperor's Children scheme is a beaut! After using the Tamiya white for the pre-highlight how do you clean it from the airbrush? Do you use normal airbrush cleaner or do you need a different one since it's an alcohol based paint?
I’ve had 3 3-6k armies all fully painted since I started in 2016. I’m just starting a new army and I don’t think I’ll use the old range at all. It’ll be all mk6 plus legion specific units. Contemptors and other dreads hold their own and Cataphractii just scrape over the line with a bit of creative basing. I’m admittedly a bit of a grognard who doesn’t like change but I think we have to accept the future has arrived. If the trade off is between little to no Heresy support from GW or new kits and consigning the old kits to the past, I know which I would rather to keep the game alive.
I love the new era of Heresy, ive been playing it since just before Betrayal of Calth. I think the new models are a much better scale and vibe. Clip off the spike and im chilling.
I am impressed by how well the 2 part MKVI studded shoulder pads look in the 360's in this video. Normally I am pretty good at filling in gaps, but these have giving me a hard time. Any tips? Or do you have any content here or on Patreon where you go into how you managed to get them this clean?
@@cultofpaint Sanding is key, but having a hard time sanding around the studs. Would definitely be interested in content focused on prepping models (especially hard to reach areas). Might be better suited for Patreon instead of RUclips.
I really like this kit, but I'm not sure what I want to do with it, I think I'm going to buy it for conversions and one offs. I'm hoping they come out with some compatible plastic melee arms soon because I think that's the missing ingredient for some of the conversions in my head.
I don't mind the changes. Different Forgeworlds in the galaxy produced variations on all the war materiel, so it's perhaps explainable. I'm so deep into 40k, I can't start 30k without abandoning projects. I'd love a Devastator Squad of these guys, perhaps even something else. But for me, it's just gonna have to wait. Thank you for the demonstration.
@@DocFubar89 the illustrators seem like they've always put their own spin on everything as well, like they've never truly nailed down anything. GW seems to leave it open to interpretation. The lore can be that way as well. One of my favorite characters is Perturabo, and no one seems to agree on exactly who he is. The whole franchise is like this, probably by design.
@@cultofpaint haha! And here I'm having to listen to Valrak call him the Iron Loser nearly every stream. I'm glad someone else agrees with me 😅👍"Iron Within!"
I don't mind them, but the helmets just throw me - hopefully they'll be bringing some legion-specific head upgrades, and if they do then fingers crossed for a 'classic' MkIII head release, but I'm not holding my breath
imho i the old marines are superior (everything before HH 2.0) because you can mix all basic mk however you want and they will be in correct scale. the fact that you will have to cut the torso in order to change it is straight on a downgrade, besides the custom legion torsos are thinner. now we also have basic troops bigger with different esthetic than the older characters or elite units. GW created a problem which literally nobody asked for... sadly such is modern GW and we are more limited than we were ever before. you can still fix everything by hand but doing an army is not worth it. the only thing i like in hh 2.0 are the tanks but we all know that we need all BASIC units in ALL mk before they release something else... still prefer the forge world sculpts because GW are constantly adding unecessary details or changes
I think the strap across the top of the shoulder pad is too small, It looks like mark 2 armor to me. I'm thinking about using the backpacks, shoulder pads and the helmets for my primaris marines. Vulkan lives!!!
These new Mark 3 should be listed as Mark 2 or atleast a in-between variant of Mark 3(or 2) armor before they fully nailed the classic Mark 3 Iron Armor style. The new helms also don’t look as strong for a frontal assault compared to the older style.
the new mk3 are definitely one of the most lean and proportionate space marine models out there, even next to the new mk6 theyre still so high quality looking, love em
I already rescaled all of my MkIII and MKIV marines, so they'll look just fine alongside mine - but I really don't like the helmets, they look like they belong on MkII armor. They'll be great for Badab stuff also.
Liking or disliking a plastic toys kit is not a matter of objective truth, personally I don't mind the shift and I like the new kit as equally as the old one. I say agree to disagree, these are plastic toys, it's not worth getting mad over.
I really like the design changes. The moment I saw that Fafnir Ran model I was ready to move on from the old mk3 styles. I've got several old plastic mk3 boxes that I could never commit to. The only thing I'd change about the new ones is the boots. The older boots were more distinctive and effective at making the armor look heavy. The rest of the new design looks better both stylistically and proportionally.
They look beautiful. But I can not accept that they make monopose models AND doubled sprues. I'm fine to get two of the same sprues in a box (because they want to save money in the mold making) if it is a completely old school modular kit. But if you decide to make monopose troops then you got to invest in individual sprues. Won't buy any of those new 40 troops especially for the high prices.
Am I the only one who likes the old version more? The new one is great in terms of proportions but there is just something wrong with it! It is wierdly smooth and the helmet is not as scary looking as MK3 from the old one. I think if you take backpack, helmet, old shoulders, old bolter it would look better, but this is still no mk2!
@@cultofpaint I just do not understand why? Mk3 has a style. Look at MK3 plague marines from 40k and many use them in heresy after clean-up. Why did they make them so smooth like they became less industrial and more....eldar like? Dunno

I know people have large existing armies, but these would interested me a lot more if GW had unified the scale with modern 40k Marines. Just rip the plaster off and make all Marines Primaris scale.
Honestly I like this inbetween scale a lot better than primaris scale.
What colour would you recommend for the backs of the legs on the Ultramarines? Black is a bit rare for their usual colour schemes, and white or gold might look too much..
If you think they need it then i'd go silver or black, I think both would work well. But perhaps leaving it all blue would suit their look better.
Looking good! In regards to having the different scales in the army, I see no problem with it at all. I'm taller than my mate. People are different sizes, the space marines would be the same
That’s a brilliant scheme. Mind sharing how you did the silver on the EC and the black on the EC/WS?
black is in this video. The silver is in the white scars video in the Heresy Playlist
Alguien tiene una foto donde aparezca la mk3 al lado de un marine primaris? Es para comprar tamaños
love the white scars scheme!!! What is that metal you used on the back of the legs?
exhaust manifold. It's all in the main video for them in the playlist
If that armor does turn out to be the updated version then i think the armor pieces will look different enough to add variety to ur hh army
yeah i think so. Was one of the reasons i was so surprised they went with mk3 not mk2
im not complaining, love me some mk3 beefcakes, though my wallets not happy haha
Thankfully, i never went to far beyond the age of darkness heresy box so my army will be almost all the new stuff.
I like the new more true scale proportions, but I feel like they made some mistakes on some parts. Heads seem too small, as do the vambraces. And the shoulder pads seem very oversized.
I think its the smaller head that makes the pads look huge
@@cultofpaint Yeah you might be on to something. It's way less an issue when you stuck on the older heads in my opinion.
If the old stuff is resin, would it be fairly easy to snap off the lower part of the body (if they're seperate like they used to be) and build it up slightly so they don't look so squat?
absolutely
The Emperor's Children scheme is a beaut! After using the Tamiya white for the pre-highlight how do you clean it from the airbrush? Do you use normal airbrush cleaner or do you need a different one since it's an alcohol based paint?
i use a drop of isopropyl alcohol, then normal cleaner.
How did you make the bases? What paint/basing material/pigment did you use?

Hey dude. How did you achieve that lovely black metal finish on the iron hand mk3 marine in the intro?
full tutorial in the heresy playlist
Yep.... had a good gawp at these in the display case at Warhammer World, this week.
I concur... they are absolutely bootiful little fellas 😗👌
Agreed
Hey this is great! I was just wondering if it would still look the same for the EC if I didn’t use an airbrush?
@@Sanguinius_lives_forever not the same, but you could still make it look great.
Thanks! I was just wondering because I didn’t have an airbrush, should probably get one soon😅
I'm way late to the party, but just put the old MKIII helmet on the new sculpts and you'll barely notice the difference when they're on the table.
I think I covered it in the imperial fists one. But either way its thick glue, smoosh, extra thin glue, sanding sponge.
and it took quite a while to do that whole box's worth. But worth it!
@@cultofpaint Sanding is key, but having a hard time sanding around the studs. Would definitely be interested in content focused on prepping models (especially hard to reach areas). Might be better suited for Patreon instead of RUclips.
@@cultofpaint re watched the Imperial Fist video. No info on the shoulder pad. Good video non the less!
I really like this kit, but I'm not sure what I want to do with it, I think I'm going to buy it for conversions and one offs. I'm hoping they come out with some compatible plastic melee arms soon because I think that's the missing ingredient for some of the conversions in my head.
Yeah some melee arms would be great.
That was kind of the thought I had. Like maybe there's some variations on the basic pattern
He is one of the greatest Primarchs ever that's who he is!
Lovely
My oh My.... I wanted to paint these as Thousand Sons but any of these look so damn good.
When are we going to see ad mech or dark mech from you. Really use your corrosion skills
I'll do some admech when they next get an update.
I think the strap across the top of the shoulder pad is too small,
It looks like mark 2 armor to me.
Not a big fan of the new Mk3 but head swaps help a lot. Best Space Marines ever made are Gravis marines ;)
SHOTS FIRED!
the new mk3 are definitely one of the most lean and proportionate space marine models out there, even next to the new mk6 theyre still so high quality looking, love em
"I was thinking of shifting this army on... because the cataphractii(ny) look shite against correctly scaled new armour marks!" 😂😂😂
Love everything about these new kits except the heads. They only seem appropriate for certain legions IMO.
Hope its not hard to get MkIII Tactical Squads.... US GW distributors wont let you preorder them.
Lucked out got three boxes of MKIII Tactical Squads . The MKIII tactical Sergeant helmet looks good on the Praetor with power axe model
The new MKIII and MKVI models have better symmetry and proportion then the old.
Is this kit on scale with Primaris Marines from 40k?
no. They really look like different ranges. Primaris still a fair bit bigger.
@@cultofpaint Great video, do you happen to have a scale comparison next to the Custodian Guard model(s)?
I already rescaled all of my MkIII and MKIV marines, so they'll look just fine alongside mine - but I really don't like the helmets, they look like they belong on MkII armor. They'll be great for Badab stuff also.
I like everything but the helmets lol
Liking or disliking a plastic toys kit is not a matter of objective truth, personally I don't mind the shift and I like the new kit as equally as the old one. I say agree to disagree, these are plastic toys, it's not worth getting mad over.
With that kind of reasonable thinking I don't think you will enjoy RUclips comment sections...
They are not plastic toys tho to a lot of people?
You are objectively wrong.
I'm still more of a fan of the old Resin MK3 marines to be honest but again these aren't bad.
I think they’re lovely, but I don’t think I’ll be adding the new Mk3s to my Mk4.
Sell me all 3 boxes then please hahaha😂
They look beautiful. But I can not accept that they make monopose models AND doubled sprues. I'm fine to get two of the same sprues in a box (because they want to save money in the mold making) if it is a completely old school modular kit. But if you decide to make monopose troops then you got to invest in individual sprues. Won't buy any of those new 40 troops especially for the high prices.
The only downside I see to this kit is the lack of chainswords.
yep!
Still think the original MK3 looks WAAAYYYY better than the new one.
No Vitaliy, you are most definitely not the only one.
@@cultofpaint I just do not understand why? Mk3 has a style. Look at MK3 plague marines from 40k and many use them in heresy after clean-up. Why did they make them so smooth like they became less industrial and more....eldar like? Dunno
The Horace Heresy...
Im just not super sold on the new design. Im trying so hard to like it, but I feel like the push for the new scale is part of t he reason why.
