As an Iron Hands fan, initially purely because of the old Forgeworld scheme, I remember being so excited for the first Heresy Iron Hands tutorial from a few years ago. Hadn't even occured to me that you might be painting this miniature! Well up for this.
Very happy to see you tackling this one! I might have to give this way a try. Can't wait for this guy to arrive in the post, what a time to be working on these grimy boys instead of the usual sea of purple. While I didn't use any Tamiya clears for my test models, I very much had the issue of losing all of the colour modulation after varnishing.
Shadrak "Smyth" Meduson is one of my favorites from the Heresy... Damn Jebez Aug and the Iron Fathers for their betrayal and abandoning him to Tybalt Marr. I guess the flesh is weak... I appreciate this type of contact... Nice work. HINT - NATHANIEL GARRO..
Loved the video! One small request: any chance you could move where you put the paint you’re using somewhere higher up on the screen? I have to watch with subtitles and the they always cover up the name of the paint 😅 Obviously not a huge deal, but maybe others would appreciate it, too. Cheers!
I don’t have any interest in Iron Hands, but I love this. I always learn something from your tutorials, and I appreciate how thoughtful and relaxing your approach to painting is. Thanks!
Was I in hibernation when this was released?? How on earth could I miss such an epic topic..! I desperately tried to emulate FW's scheme when I first got back into the hobby many (many) years ago, but gave up. This scheme has more than reactivated my circuits of iron and flesh - at long last I can sense the way forward with regards to the Horus Heresy, and hopefully renew my interest in the hobby. Thank you so much....
I've noticed you switching between the Infinity and Evolution a bit over the past months. I would be really interested in a more in depth look at the differences and what you look for in airbrushes for certain applications. Great stuff as always, really like the different take on the black armor.
4:07 the Metal Colours series - I agree completely. I absolutely love them but they’re so liquid that I only enjoy using them on larger surfaces. I still keep some of my “stickier” metallics like Leadbelcher for some of the finer work. Also, speaking of Metallic Colours Gold, why is it so green 😂
Your already know I'm a huge fan of your work and I template your formulas . I was wondering if you would do another request like you did with the warhounds (wish I loved and copied the exact formula); could u please do ashen circle? No one does them aside 1 individual and sadly he's stopped posting.
Stunning work as ever Henry - a gorgeous job on a gorgeous miniature. And his face looks like my neighbour David (allegiance unknown), so that’s a bonus 😂
Such an effective scheme! If I was to replicate it without any airbrush-related work and utensils - how would you tackle the light layers of Shyish Purple and DA Green? Mixing it down with Contrast or Lahmian Medium and feathering it in seems like a good idea, but maybe there are other ways people would be willing to suggest and/or share? Anyway thanks to CoP for another inspiring tutorial!
enjoyable video, thanks Have you looked at the Darkstar Molten Metals? Could be a few colors in there would reduce the need for mixing with the white metals, Blue Steel or Black Diamond maybe.
Hi Henry. How would you apply this scheme to a vehicle? In particular the contrast shading? I can understand the process on a mini but I’m a bit thrown in how to achieve the look on a larger canvas. I feel like it’s not about just hitting the shadows so would you just space it out and add variety to the base prior to the thinned black contrast?
@@cultofpaint That would be awesome. I’m just super happy to see so many iconic characters make it from page to table top. Long live Horus Heresy and Cult of Paint!
For those of us without an airbrush, is there a close approximate way to get the similar finish when using the contrast paints with a hairy brush? Maybe drybrushing thinned contrast paint?
The final completed mini looks much darker than in the armour steps previously. Did you add another layer of Templar at some point or is it different lighting?
I deliberately overexpose the painting footage to make sure everything can be seen clearly. Its a combo of more "normal" lighting and the other colours on the mini being complete that make him look a little darker. Its still just that one glaze of black templar.

He’s going to be the perfect base for my Warsmith conversion.
very much
Heresy is everywhere.
Around 10:15, 'badab black and devlan mud'...wow was that blast of the past. Can smell the pots now.
Really like your take on the armour itself not being black but dark metal with discolouration.
What a beast of a model and paintjob! Love your videos 🔥Would love to see you paint Ferrus Manus!

Incredible. The colour-shifting effect on the metals, that burnt steel. Awesome.
Awesome looking space marine! Love your style!
thanks Janet

I dont like the Garro sculpt. But i'd love to have a go at creating him one day.
I’m painting some Nemesis Destroyers soon and may be able to use some of this technique to make them more interesting

first time anyone has ever said that, but its a great point. I'll sort it out.
Between Horus Heresy and Legions Imperialis my whole year is heresy focused. So please, keep producing HH content!
I don’t have any interest in Iron Hands, but I love this. I always learn something from your tutorials, and I appreciate how thoughtful and relaxing your approach to painting is. Thanks!
Glad to hear it!
Really fun to watch you paint a character, would love to see more!
Amazing as always Henry. Love seeing the reimagining of so many older schemes with new materials. Loving shooting contrast myself, amazing stuff
cheers Chris
Every Heresy video that gets uploaded I have to fight against Henry's siren song, tempting me to start a new army.
dont fight it
Magnificent

@@Brother_Desultor it's a really fun scheme, and looks great on the tabletop
So good; love the development of your initial IH scheme which I have used quite a bit!

Great character model and fantastic paint job. Well done
Great work Henry! I could hear your barely contained glee at the upcoming TOW Chaos release :D
He looks aweseome!!!!!
Awesome model. One I’m definitely getting.
Such a nice painting job 👍
Another amazing video
Wow, nice job, really nice 👌
I like to do mine like "brushed Steel" Love your scheme - Iron hands has a lot of room for actual colours, just subtly (Also: Horus Heresy > All) ;)
4:07 the Metal Colours series - I agree completely. I absolutely love them but they’re so liquid that I only enjoy using them on larger surfaces. I still keep some of my “stickier” metallics like Leadbelcher for some of the finer work.

Does Dave have a keen interest in machinery? I'd keep an eye out just in case.
gorgeous

I think i'd try sponging all the armour layers.
@@cultofpaint Interesting idea; I'll definiteley give it a go.
28:40 happy to watch more Heresy content fore sure!
enjoyable video, thanks
Have you looked at the Darkstar Molten Metals? Could be a few colors in there would reduce the need for mixing with the white metals, Blue Steel or Black Diamond maybe.
I've got the full set. I like them, but the flake is a bit too much for the look I was going for.

pretty much exactly the same way i painted up the blood angels predator the other week.
@@cultofpaint haven’t gotten to that one yet. Thanks!
Btw this kills me...I love endryd harr and meduson . So I decided to do a black legion army using both:)
Another amazing guide! Thanks Henry
Great stuff as always, did you manage to get the other 3 new characters too? Would LOVE to see your take on Hibou Khan!
I'd like to do a character for each legion to add to the playlist, so maybe in time. I agree, hibou is a great looking mini.
@@cultofpaint That would be awesome. I’m just super happy to see so many iconic characters make it from page to table top. Long live Horus Heresy and Cult of Paint!
Cool
Gorgeous model. Just to clarify, did you also was the armour in the brown oil wash you use in your other marine videos? Thanks!
@@bonhommes4 thanks. Everything I did to the mini is in the video. So the oil washes on this are only the ones I show
Gun should've been white i was eagerly waiting to see how u did the Iron Hands white gun 😆.
How is the epic army coming along? I’d totally watch an update video and listen to some opinions after the first few games.
I dont think we'll ever really cover gaming here. I'll update the epic army once we get the Tallarn book i reckon.
I wanted to clap at landing the pupil perfectly
Any alternatives for dark templar? Like a heavily thinned corvus black or etc?
Like the hair honestly, at least it's not the 1000th bald or mohawked marine
Could you recommend a paint to mix with Exhaust Manifold for the same reason you mix your Burnt Iron with Iron Warriors?
Iron warriors is pretty close to be fair! Just needs a lot of brown in there too.
For those of us without an airbrush, is there a close approximate way to get the similar finish when using the contrast paints with a hairy brush? Maybe drybrushing thinned contrast paint?
I'd trying sponging it.
I would glaze a thinned down contrast paint and feather them out to get the fade. Make sure you wick off the excess moisture before applying.
How much are you able to say about the Cult paint range at the moment.. exciting news
Acrylic paints, dropper bottles, great colours,
@@cultofpaint sold. Looking forward to that, big up the team 🫡
Great paint job. I just dont get the pose!
Did you get Tybalt Marr and Little Horus too?
I'll probably leave Sons of horus stuff for Andy in case he fancies back to them at some point.

Does CoP ever do online classes for those of us in random places in the world?
not currently.
Functional you mean by boring, he's functional✌️👍, even your base is perfect for him❤
love the depth on the armor, wonder what it would look like with further pushed volumetric highlights
im sure it would look good.
Ffs Henry. Now I have to buy Shadrak.
worth it
Love this character, shame what happened to him in the books...
