The show's third season (1995-96) was completely laid out before ABC swung the axe:
-The Freedom Fighters, now dubbed "Freedom Builders", would have begun the process of rebuilding Mobotropolis, with Rotor spearheading the construction effort. (Some of that was explored during the middle part of the Archie Comic, but this coincided with the soap opera elements coming into play, and it later became moot when "Eggman" swooped in and took over his counterpart's base of operations.) Sonic would discover that Victory Is Boring, but unbeknown to him, Snively is sneaking around Robotropolis and gathering intel on the Freedom Fighters. However, his stint as lead villain would prove short-lived, and in a moment of desperation he would free Naugus, Robotnik, and King Acorn from the Void. (The pair of sinister red eyes glaring at the viewer when the show closes belong to Naugus.) Naugus would immediately claim the villain crown: using the King as bait to lure Sally in, turning Robotnik into a Snively equivalent, and in turn downgrading Snively into essentially nothing. Snively was slated to defect to the Freedom Fighters, although he would plot to betray them at some point; Antoine would end up being the only one to notice - and ultimately stop - Snively's plans.
-The show would have eventually confirmed, as some fans had already speculated, that Mobius was Earth All Along, with the plot set millennia after a human-purging nuclear war which caused animals to become sapient. Robotnik and Snively were to be the last humans left alive, having been off-world on a space colony mission before the war struck. After betraying and killing the rest of their crew, they returned to Earth and, due to relativity, landed after the animals had already taken stewardship of the planet. Once again, the Archie comic would reused this concept but with aliens bombarding the Earth with Gene Bombs after Robotnik’s ancestor dissected their emissary. Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie also had the concept of Sonic and co. living in an Earth After the End, with that film’s version of Robotropolis being located near an abandoned New York City.
-Tails would have matured and played a much larger role in the Freedom Fighters, even showing a bit of a rebellious side and saving Knothole from a major disaster. His later relationship with Sonic would have been closer to the games.
-Dulcy would have come into her full powers. All Ben Hurst said about that was, You don’t want to see a dragon when she gets mad.
-Sally would be romanced by someone other than Sonic, though Sonic would come out on top in the end. The insufferable Geoffrey St. John (a faux-British skunk) was Sonic's rival for Sally's affections in the Archie storyline.
-Sonic would also undergo a major personality change.
-NICOLE's backstory would reveal that she was once a Mobian child who was downloaded into a computer by Robotnik. At some point NICOLE would be restored to her former self, becoming a member of the Freedom Fighters. This, too, was revisited in the Archie comic, with NICOLE turning into a Lynx as a pun on the Atari handheld.
-At some point, Knothole would "get crunched", whatever that meant.
-Knuckles was supposed to appear at the end of the season, and was going to be be promoted to a main character in the also-nonexistent fourth season.

In case you're wondering, one guy wanted to use Naugus a wizard from ealier in this series, but another guy wanted to use Knuckles instead. It was decided to use Naugus and that's what would've been done if the show got picked up, but you can still see Knuckles was what the storyboard artists and animators were under the impression we were getting, because just look and you can see the outline of Knuckles' snout and nose in front of his eyes.
Knuckles was planned to be in Season 3 one way or another though, so he would've shown up regardless.
Wonder how it would turn out with the Knuckles plot. Would he be evil or just misunderstood?

When I was young, I always thought this was their version of how we transitioned from Robotnik to Eggman. Basically kinda what they did in Archie but Snively becoming more like his Uncle and using the Alias “Eggman” to distance himself from his Uncle. And yeah, I also thought that those eyes were their interpretation of Metal Sonic as well.
Honesty this might be the truth you can honestly see the resemblance between Snivley and Eggman they explain they aren’t alone hence they create such weapons like Metal Sonic and Shadow not to mention how they save their same hatred for Sonic

I think most of us did before Ben Hurst flat out said that it's Naugus. Come on, who would look at those eyes and think they were the eyes of Naugus?
Metal Sonic wouldve been better. Maybe have it of been the Sonic 2 one, then Robotnik returns with the Sonic 3 one.

I used to think those red eyes belonged to Metal Sonic. You know what? That'd have been interesting,Snivley learning from his uncle's mistakes and deciding to fight fire with fire
I hated that they said it was Naugus. The shape of the eyes and the shadow of the front part of the face do not match. Naugus has small, sharp angular eyes. What you see in the finale were big and round. Also the part of the face you see in the shadow had a rounded upturned snout and a round nose. Naugus has no snout. His face is flat with a sharp, pointy nose.

Season 3 was going to be very dark. For an instance if you didn't hate Robotnik already get this. There was going to be an origin story with Nicole. It is revealed she was a super genius kid who Robontik came to knowing she would probably be a threat to his plans. He then lies to Nicole saying she was chosen for a "research project." but in reality he wanted to convert Nicole into a super program that he could use for his own gain. His means about doing so? An agonizingly painful transfer process that kills her biological body as her soul is moved to the computer. And the thing is he actually succeeds. Nicole upon realizing what has happened to her starts to enter an existential crisis and realizes she has to serve Robotnik. She with that knowledge is given two options. Destroy all life which would mean she would be alone for eternity or make everyone happy at the cost of their free will. Nicole in order to fight back against Robotnik's programming decides to suppress her personality completely and then she mind wipes Robotnik and manipulates him into giving her over to King Acorn. King Acorn then give Nicole fittingly to her best friend Sally who doesn't know that Nicole is her friend because her biological body is gone and she's now a computer. God this show can be depressing. But had they actually gone through with that backstory my god. This probably would explain why Nicole is so helpful towards Sally. Even as a spirit possessing a computer she still wishes for what's best for her friend even though Sally doesn't know it's her.

She also thought out billions of (though I'm probably remembering too high) possibilities to use her new power and all came to the same result: a hive mind with her as queen. That explains the "cost of free will" and why she suppressed her personality in to a basic harmless handheld computer from a globally threatening satellite or something like that.
Up until "The Void" caused it to aaccidentally surface due to miscommunication and possibly physical damage.

He would have remained second, or even third banana. Robotnik would have been resurrected in short order, but Nagus would have been the arch villain of season 3. And Knuckles would have come into it by the end.

Man, that really sucks that the cartoon ended on a cliffhanger this way, which is such a very sad shame. Sonic the Hedgehog SatAM needs to have it's third season like it was supposed to have. Even if it's because of lower ratings than Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, there's ABSOLUTELY NO REASON OR EXCUSE for the cartoon to end on a cliffhanger this way! It's no wonder why Sonic fans including myself are not happy about this.

Same, only difference was I thought Snively scanned Sonic’s data from when he destroyed Robotropolis and created Metal Sonic and those were his eyes at the end.

Naugus is a shape-shifter. He took on the form of King Acorn once in an earlier episode even.

Tails and Knuckles begin to fight against Naugus, while Robotnik decides to confront Snively. After a spectacular battle with his nephew, the latter is seriously injured and says Robonik to kill him by his uncle refuses and realizes that it was a very treacherous with him, and would kill him if it would be worse.
I can’t believe it ended with the cliffhanger in the end of season 2. There is a comic of Sonic SatAM Sea3on in the Sonic SatAM website.

It turns out that in fact Sonic is not dead, but only wounded. The characters are able to cure him, but he has a broken leg.
While Ben Hurst has confirmed that those eyes belong to Naugus, I still find it hard to believe because when I look up images of Naugus, his eyes do not resemble the shape of these red eyes. I think it would have been cooler if they went for a character who has not appeared in the show yet, like Knuckles or even Metal Sonic.
Well, the reason why those eyes don’t look like Naugus’s eyes is because it was originally supposed to be Knuckles, but then they decided to change it to Naugus.

Fact: The writer guy or whoever says they're supposed to be Naugus' eyes.
Fact: Naugus' eyes have always been portrayed and two separate eyeballs in any media I'm aware of.
Fact: They look like Knuckles' eyes.
Fact: Naugus sided with Sonic against Robotnik. Why would he side with Snively against Sonic?
Verdict: Who Knows
This is a super late reply.... but "look at Knuckles' eyes" is not a fact. It's a tip, advice, suggestion. It's also totally different shape than what we see here. In fact, Knuckles' eyes would have appeared a lot more similar to Naugus' actual eyes making it even harder to tell who they were.
Everyone's first thought should have been some form of an evil Sonic, as Sonic's eyes are the ONLY eyes in the entries series shaped anything like that. It's confirmed to be Naugus. Who is a shape-shifter. Think about that for.a second...
As for why he'd want to attack Sonic..... well Naugus hates Robotnik... but he's also evil.

This is just a hunch, but remember when Naugus impersonated Sally's father to escape the void? Maybe he was impersonating Sonic here, which would explain the eyes. The reason why, to either escape the Void, or something that Snively is plotting. Either way, we may never know, unless it's revealed in the fan made 3rd season.
Before it was revealed as Naugus, I had wondered if that was Knuckles, even though the eyes were glowing and didn't match.

Why we got two Sonic series in 1993:
According to Robby London, DiC originally made a deal to produce only the darker, more story-driven Sonic cartoon for ABC to air on Saturday mornings. However, DiC also wanted to go further and produce additional episodes for weekday syndication as well, similar to what DiC has previously done with The Real Ghostbusters, but Mark Pedowitz, the then-senior vice president of business affairs and contracts at ABC, who expected the Sonic cartoon to air exclusively on ABC, rejected the idea, saying that if DiC puts the show in syndication, then it won't be on their network. ABC wouldn't agree to the deal until London came with a proposition that DiC would produce a separate, vastly different Sonic show for syndication instead, the end result of which became Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.
I think it’s the eyes of either Knuckles or Shadow the Hedgehog. The eyes don’t look like the eyes of Naugus. His eyes wasn’t ‘the style’ like Sonic.

Why did you make Sonic Underground instead of a sequel series?

I have to agree, instead a third season of Sonic SatAM, DiC company made Sonic Underground which is the worst cartoon TV show of all time (don’t get me wrong) Sonic Underground is loved by some people but is a shit TV show because it don’t really have nothing interesting and special involved.
i wish SatAM could continue that unfinish story they left 1994 after it was cancelled and also Ben Hurst (who writes the Sonic SatAM iconic episodes) could have that idea to continue and making it real since he was involved in Sonic SatAM and in Sonic Underground if Sega let him (along the rest of the team) to finish that story once and for all (there is a reason why Samurai Jack return to finish the story) but sadly Sonic SatAM never got the opportunity to end correctly officially because we know what happen after Sonic Underground. in 2002 Ben Hurst return the idea of SatAM but it was ruin by Ken Penders, then Ben Hurst die in 2010, DiC company is death which is now WildBrain and Sonic SatAM story is now being ended correctly by a fan group call Sea3on and also a fan comic of Sonic SatAM Season 3 was made in 2009

Meanwhile Snively escapes in a spaceship swearing that return.
When I was a kid and saw this I actually thought it was Shadow the Hedgehog's eyes because I had also just played Sonic Adventure 2. Oh, how things change...

It looks like knuckles. Pay attention to the pointy nose and sharp lines in the face area. I mean most people don't even realize that they do continue in the comics so just doing some reading. ;)
The comics are not the same as the cartoon. They took on the same concept.
Knuckles WAS planned to appear in season 3. But, as infamous as it is, you can look at Sonic Underground and see that it was heavily based on SatAM from Robotnik's design to Robotnik having taken over to Sonic being a freedom fighter part of the resistance to the appearance of Robotnik's Robotropolis. Knuckles appears in Underground in a way probably very similar at least to how he would have in SatAM.
That said, he's not even and would not have been brought off the island to come to Sonic. They would have had them fight on first meeting by tricking Knuckles into thinking Sonic was after the emerald, based off of Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
These eyes belong to Sonic, shape-wise, but they glow red because, as confirmed officially, they are the eyes of Naugus. Consider the fact that Naugus is a shape shifter (proven as he once shape shifted into King Acorn in an earlier episode) and it becomes clear that Snively had released Naugus and that Naugus had shape-shifted into Sonic for some reason.
Season 3 ep 1 exists. The network thought the idea of robotized citizen patroling was too mature for children. I remember watching it, and thinking this kids can handle complexity

Snively was used in the sonic comics many years later even in the 2010s during the archie sonic comic run.
And here i almost thought it was Metal Sonic, but with it being Naugus it’s even worse!

At least we can agree pausing some Snively's face scenes are hilarious and can't be unseen.
Fun Fact: The episode’s director claimed that the eyes belonged Knuckles, which was a last minute addition. Until Ben Hurst confirmed when he planned for Season 3, he claimed them to be actually Naugus’ eyes. Considering that Naugus had played a part in Robotnik’s flashbacks, we could’ve definitely seen Naugus taking center stage.

I'm pretty sure this was snively's plan from the beginning he wanted Sonic and his team to defeat Robotnik so he wouldn't have to listen to him anymore and once Robotnik was gone snively would end up taking his place along with naugus since we see his eyes at the end of the episode

The one that comes to my mind is Mortal Kombat Conquest.
@@pooiyx Well, perhaps they weren't necessarily all from that era, but there are quite a few that end not so great. A few more I can think of are Spiderman-Man (1994), Class of the Titans, Superman: The Animated Series, Thundercats (2011) and Teen Titans (2003-06 - unless you include the Trouble In Tokyo movie, which I do).
Others simply ended where the plot was not completed - The Pirates of Dark Water, Dungeons & Dragons, She-Ra: Princess of Power, Captain N the Game Master, Jana of the Jungle and Wildfire. Now most of these are from pretty much the same era, part from one which was released in the 70's.
