In 1992, DiC Entertainment created a pilot episode for their series Sonic The Hedgehog, known to fans as Sonic SatAM. This original pilot episode was reused and aired as a standard episode in the first season, but the original test pilot intro sequence was lost to time. Let's go over the details.

You got some of your facts wrong: Noisy Neighbors did the song for _every_ episode of *both* seasons. Michael Tavera only sang it for the premiere of the show during _ABC’s Saturday Morning Special_ where they previewed a cliffhangered digest version of the episode “Super Sonic”.
And I know for certain this is the fact because I recorded a few episodes during their first run (because I was shit about waking up in a timely manner to get downstairs to watch them) and all my recordings have the Noisy Neighbors version Tavera’s was never an official version. It was probably because Noisy Neighbors’ version wasn’t ready or they grabbed a demo recording for digest version of “Super Sonic”.

Yes and yet had to get a kid to voice him as a child only for _Sonic Underground_ to let him do young Sonic himself while Sam Vincent did all his singing.

@@ViewpointProd About that demostration, I think the rocky level shown is art for the scrapped Underground Caves level that came before Toxic Caves (then called Toxic Pools). The game originally had five levels in design documents.

Those early issues also seemed to be sort of a blend between SatAM and the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Scratch, Grounder, and Coconuts were all pretty regular characters for the first few years.
I really wish they'd bring back the old characters into the new canon tho. I miss Sally and the freedom fighters
I'm more fascinated by the storyboards' Sally for the stronger resemblance to the original "Ricky" design like what Sonic the Comic used.
Considering the Sally Acorn in the lost intro is pink, and that even when the pilot episode aired they had changed the intro-Sally to be brown, I think it's fairly safe to assume that barely anything changed between the pitch and the airing of the pilot episode, especially since the pilot episode is so vastly different from all other episodes in the series. I have never thought that it fits in, and I'm quite astonished that they didn't make a new pilot episode.
I agree. In hindsight, that pilot and this intro felt like they were trying to be a connection point between AoStE and SatAM, when such a connection was completely unnecessary.

A good bit of the inspiration for SatAM came from "Felix the Cat: The Movie"; some also came from an animated series called "The Raccoons". I challenge anyone who reads this to watch these, and SatAM, and see if they can find the similarities.

I have a version of the intro that uses an alternative shot of Robotropolis as the Destroyer goes past (the smoke is noticeably different). Far as I can tell, that version was only broadcast ONCE on Channel 4.

While true, I'd still take the absolutely legendary final intro. It's stayed alive in people's minds for three decades for a reason, after all.
This was produced by DiC. Some of the cartoons they created at the same time as Sonic the Hedgehog included Adventures Sonic the Hedgehog, the 1st seasons of Hurricanes and Double Dragon (for syndication), Madeline (for The Family Channel), All-New Dennis the Menace (for CBS). They also acquired the rerun rights to the Filmation Archie cartoons form the 60's and 70's when it was airing on The Family Channel.
According to Robby London, DIC originally made a deal to produce only the Saturday morning Sonic series for the ABC network, which was originally planned to air in the Fall of 1992. The cartoon was originally planned to be more light-hearted compared to the final product, as reflected by its pilot episode "Heads or Tails", early promotional material found in Fleetway's Sonic the Comic and the early issues of Sonic the Hedgehog comics by Archie, which were based on the Saturday morning Sonic cartoon. However, DIC also wanted to go further and produce additional episodes for weekday syndication as well, similar to what DIC has previously done with The Real Ghostbusters, but Mark Pedowitz, ABC's senior vice president of business affairs and contracts, expected Sonic to air exclusively on ABC and rejected the idea, telling London "If you guys want to do syndication, be our guest, go with God, but you won’t be on our network." ABC would not agree to the deal until London came with a proposition that DIC would produce a separate, vastly different Sonic show for syndication instead, the end result of which became Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Afterward, ABC was at first willing to air only a single half-hour episode as a prime-time special scheduled for March 1993 (which would become the episode "Heads or Tails") before ultimately delaying it and including it as part of the show which ABC picked up again for a full season, this time airing in the Fall of 1993, alongside Adventures airing in syndication at the same time. During that time, and as a result, the Saturday morning Sonic cartoon received a makeover and was made darker and more serious in order to differentiate itself from the syndicated Sonic cartoon. The show bible for the Saturday morning Sonic cartoon was written in February 1992 with the final revision made on March 10, 1993.
IDK why, but Sonic SatAM is way beyond nostalgia for me. I don't know what is about it that even brings a little bit of tears in my eyes, every time i see content about it. like there was something very sad hidden behind it or something like that. Does it feels like it for anybody else? or is it just me tripping here?

Makes me sad and obsessed too. Not sure why. I think it reminds me of when I frantically searched for more episodes not realizing it was cancelled. Then I started to find comics that featured the characters... There was still a lot of wonder and potential. Then, as I got older I realized how the property worked, and how mishandled it was. Satam represented some kind of peak in the potential of the series, as well as the peak of my childhood nostalgia, and nothing can touch it. The show runners took so little and made so much

Fun fact: Bunny Rabbot's last name literally WAS "Rabbot" even before she was changed; it was just originally pronounced "Ra-BOE." Kind of a Cajun-like pronunciation. However, she did indeed change the pronunciation to "RA-bott" by choice in order to embrace what she had become instead of being ashamed of it.
This was the best sonic cartoon & it's such a travesty it only went 2 seasons & ended on a cliffhanger

Micheal Tavera's version lives rent-free in my head for eternity as this is the song I remember when I was a kid. Another user claims it was only played once but I personally know this to be untrue, source? I was there. lol
I agree with the other commenter, the Noisy Neighbors version is the one used throughout the series on ABC. I never heard the demo version until the DVD collection came out.
I can only speak from the perspective of an overseas viewer, but in my corner of Europe we for sure had the Noisy Neighbors version throughout both seasons.
I used to have a lot of recordings on both VHS and audio cassettes.
Maybe someone who worked on the series may have the pilot episode on a screener vhs somewhere but can’t upload it due to legal issues.

I actually watched this episode a few days ago and it was really funny when tails knocked into a tree and he got so mad at the tree that he tried to punch it off and I only realized it was the pilot when I saw Sally and how she was in her comic form and not her cartoon form

I think the original intro was cut due to it being too lighthearted when the series went for a much darker tone. This is especially notable in the tonal shift between the main series and episode 7. The checker-wrecker ball was featured in the Archie comics, but only in the early issues.
Aside from episode 7, it should be noted that Robotnik never utilizes badniks-instead preferring roboticized Mobians and SWAT bots. The show evidently wanted a more realistic approach-especially since Robotnik's weaponry, excluding lasers, was predominantly missiles and explosives-all very realistic options.
It sounds VERY similar to It Doesn't Matter from Sonic Adventure.

@@MisterCVids It is the last great Sonic game aside from Sonic And The Black Knight objectively. Both have great gameplay and a great story. Sonic Colors has an okay Story. Sonic Lost World has an awful story, Sonic Forces has a corny story and Sonic Generations has the most half assed story of any 3D Sonic but, it does have great gameplay.
I agree with literally everything you just said. Unleashed was fantastic when it came to atmosphere and world building. And for a game from 2008, it's aged better visually than anything else from that generation. I pray every night before bed that the Xbox version gets a 4K patch eventually 🙏

I hated how the series ended with a cliff hanger. As far as I'm concerned, those glowing eyes behind Sniveley were Metal Sonic. The shape and shadow of part of the face looked just like Sonic.

@@morale.9330 Yes, it was stated in an interview years later, But It made no sense to me.
The shape of the eyes and the shadow of the front part of the face do not match. Naugus has small, sharp angular eyes. What you see in the finale were big and round. Also the part of the face you see in the shadow had a rounded upturned snout and a round nose. Naugus has no snout. His face is flat with a sharp, pointy nose.
@@Lindsay-nx5sv could be an animation blunder. I doubt it was Metal Sonic, because the SatA.M. showrunners didn't know about him, and the character wasn't well known yet, as not many had Sonic CD.
Yeah I thought it was obviously Metal sonic, but they wanted to have Naugus be the main villain. Have tails rise in the freedom fighter ranks and come of age. They wanted a love triangle situation too, this is was from an interview I saw. It's a good watch, they really cared about this show and that's what made it grouse

I doubt it especially since in early overseas Sonic media Ricky (the squirell animal friend) was also known as Sally Acorn (the animal friend inspiration is more obvious in the concept art with all of the Sonic 1 animals friends represented as part of the "freedom team" with their early overseas names in use (including Sally))

Unfortunately no. Sega has obliterated anything from this era from any canon. Same goes for the comic series. But to be honest I don't think even Sega knows what's canon anymore. It's a mess

As far as I see it, Sega doesn't have the moral right to decide what canon is anymore.
I think every cartoon is in a different continuity (meaning there are 5 continuities for cartoons) with Sonic Boom being the closest to being canon to a game (in fact I wouldn't be surprised if it is canon to the Sonic Boom games)

What 'current timeline'? The Sonic Boom cartoon isn't even like the Sonic Boom game, and Sonic Mania has nothing to do with them. There is no 'current timeline': just separated projects with their own continuity, like always.

@@MisterCVids There is a difference between being inconsistent and being nothing like the source material. Adaptations like Sonic the Comic, Sonic X and IDW borrowed a lot from the games, while the Dic cartoons were basically random original shows with Sonic characters thrown in.
@@ericselim254 and yet Sonic SATAM was one of the best sonic shows ever(if not THE best), despite being looser in adaptation, it gets Sonic and Robotnik right as characters and the general themes, that's what matters.
And IDW is pretty mediocre and lacking, despite borrowing things from the games(while throwing out other important elements like humans) it doesn't rise beyond pale imitation.
@@prufan Yeah right. SatAM turned Sonic into a complete joke, making him an absolute dumbass so that his Mary Sue girlfriend could bail him out of trouble and bust his balls all the time. And his demeanor and personality were so cringy and over the top that it felt like reading a bad fanfic.
As for SatAM getting Robotnik right. I don't know what games you have played, but the Robotnik from the official game was never all serious and shit as in SatAM.
SatAM has nothing on IDW in terms of characterizations and writing.
Honestly, adventures of is a better starting point than Satam.
