A celebrated Serbian war hero, Milunka Savić is one of the world's most decorated female combatants who fought in both Balkan Wars and WWI. She is known for cutting off her hair and changing her appearance to look like a man in order to take her brother’s place in the army.

after the war she became a poor cleaning lady for the rest of her life. she was also forgotten by most historians in her lifetime. only after her death she started to get the respect she earned.

She was offered foreign pensions, but she refused and stayed in Serbia. We can thank the stinky communists for her dissaperance during that time, since here in Serbia at that time, when Yugoslavia was formed, there were no separations in the name of "unity and brotherhood", therefore anyhing and everything that Serbs achieved, wouldn't be celebrated, so that our neighbours wouldn't envy us.

Milunka Savić was a Serbian war heroine who fought in the Balkan Wars and in World War I. She is the most-decorated female combatant in the recorded history of warfare. In 1912, her brother received call-up papers for mobilization for the First Balkan War. She chose to go in his place-cutting her hair and donning men's clothes and joining the Serbian army. She quickly saw combat and received her first medal and was promoted to corporal in the Battle of Bregalnica. Engaged in battle, she sustained wounds and it was only then, when recovering from her injuries in hospital, that her true sex was revealed, much to the surprise of the attending physicians. Savic was called before her commanding officer. They didn't want to punish her, because she had proven a valuable and highly competent soldier. The military deployment that had resulted in her sex being revealed had been her tenth. But neither was it suitable for a young woman to be in combat. She was offered a transfer to the Nursing division. Savic stood at attention and insisted she only wanted to fight for her country as a combatant. The officer said he'd think it over and give her his answer the next day. Still standing at attention, Savic responded, "I will wait." It is said he only made her stand an hour before agreeing to send her back to the infantry. In 1914, in the early days of World War I, Savić was awarded her first Karađorđe Star with Swords after the Battle of Kolubara. She received her second Karađorđe Star (with Swords) after the Battle of the Crna Bend in 1916 when she captured 23 Bulgarian soldiers single-handedly. She was awarded the French Légion d’Honneur (Legion of Honour) twice, as well as the Russian Cross of St. George, the British medal of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael, and the Serbian Miloš Obilić medal. She was the sole female recipient of the French Croix de Guerre 1914-1918 with the gold palm attribute for service in World War I.

So I know the Preussens and other German knights went to Serbia, but I am Saxonian lol it is not exactly a joy for me, because Saxons play only an early part of German history. We were irrelevant after 13th century, and most Saxons in WW1 fought mostly on the western front (Somme, Verdun, Christmas truce). I have a lot of respect for Serbians, I dated a Serbian woman who told me about Serbia WW1 and August von Mackensen was already my "idol" because he was the "last hussar" and my ancestor was part of his unit. It's funny because my mother's idol is Falkenhayn ,he helped conquer Romania 1916, but the German high command of WW1 were never friends 😂 Mackensen was very successful, but Falkenhayn was not, so that is my name given from her LOL. Pop history has, sadly, oversimplified things too much in many areas. And considering the breadth of human history you can't even blame schools for having to truncate it down, but sadly it leaves far too many assuming that things were ironclad and universal. So, if you wanted to write a movie about it, you'd probably get a big "Uh-huh, sure, a woman fighting in the trenches in WWI... yeah, BS." wheras with Wonder Woman it's explicitly (superhero) fantasy so on paper Suspension of Disbelief works, whereas with Miss Savic it's real and also does not match the average person's knowledge of what happened.
And to be honest, even the stuff that is within the 'popular consensus' gets vastly oversimplified and genericized to the point where it's not even the most interesting parts of it.

Respect and eternal glory to the Serb hero Milunka Savić, the most decorated woman in the history of warfare! She is famous for saving enemy lives during the hardest battles her elite "Iron regiment" fought against them. Lady of the dark for example single handedly imprisonated 23 enemy soldiers. Highly skilled bomber and shooter. Combination of humanity, bravery, capability and patriotism made her a person who always did what was good, what was right completely disregarding her life in the process. Serbia bows to you, dear Milunka! Вечна ти слава и хвала, хероино српска! Живела Србија! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤❤❤🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸

It reminds me of a heroine also from my country, Brazil, called Maria Quitéria de Jesus, she was the first woman to enter the armed forces in 1822 against the Portuguese, using her brother-in-law's name and pretending to be a man, her identity was revealed, but Major Silva e Castro did not allow her to leave the troops because of her facility with weapons handling and discipline in battle, Maria Quitéria had no schooling, but was experienced in hunting and fishing, as well as in the management of weapons.
Unlike the girls of her time, she was independent and contradicted society's standards.
After adopting her real name, Maria Quitéria changed her male uniform for skirts and accessories. Her courage in joining a male environment caught the attention of other women, who joined the troops and formed a group commanded by Quitéria.
With the defeat of the Portuguese troops, in July 1823, Maria Quitéria was promoted to cadet and recognized as a heroine of Independence. Dom Pedro I gave her the title of “Knight of the Imperial Order of the Cruzeiro”.

For 15 years she worked most menial jobs. She refused proposal of French government to move to France and receive French military pension. Instead in Yugoslavia she lived poorly and proudly. New nations were born in Serbian national bodies, that never existed before. If you look closer at the percentage of the victims of Goli Otok you will see that a huge amount were Serbs. Almost all.
