I finally got around to clicking on one of your notifications, and wow!!!!! I just added to the cart. 😂 Thank you, my man!!!!! ❤❤✌️ Keep doing your thing! You are a happy soul!
I know it supports a projector, but any word if that HDMI (or USB-C) supports an external touchscreen monitor? All those options. All those settings. All those screens full of club and ball data (which look amazing, btw). All from a touch screen that's sitting on the floor? They really should have made it detachable so you could mount it on a wall, lay it on a table, have your buddy caddy/control while you swing, etc. I'd be willing to bet it's just a bog-standard 10" (android?) tablet under the hood.
I was hoping for an outdoor version on the Square Golf launch monitor, got the R10 just wanted a camera version for accurate club path... 4.3k in the UK for the R50, Mevo+ is looking more likely now
Don't get the Mevo+. I have it and I regret it. By the time you add the pro package with fusion tracking and face impact to match one of the 3 camera LMs out there then you have $3500+ in it. Next setup is a pain. Everytime you want to use it you need to check alignment, calibrate it, and test the lighting with a practice swing. This wouldn't be so bad except the Mevo+ doesn't connect to a network and allow you to see it on the network so that you can connect your devices to it. Instead it works like a hotspot on wifi. So you have to connect to it, run FSGolf on an iPad or PC, run through the calibration procedure & testing, disconnect from the Mevo+, connect to the internet, launch your simulator of choice, E6, GSPro, Awesome Golf, check out your license, disconnect from the network, connect to the Mevo+ and then finally you can start playing. About 15 minutes once you get the procedure down. On top of that Mevo+ is horrible with putting so just forget about putting. It also misses at least 50% of short chips under 10 -15 feet because they don't get enough height to be detected as a hit. This really takes you out of the golf game and becomes super annoying after awhile. On top of that, every time Flightscope comes out with an update to the firmware or software that adds something useful to the package they charge you a minimum of $500.00 for the upgrade. Not worth it. Get one of the 3 camera LMs or the new square or this R50. Save yourself time and money and get a better overall experience in less room.
My brother is a lefty and I'm a righty. If we take this to the range, are we able to just lift and place it on both sides (could get tedious I guess)... Or do you have to configure each time? And does home tee hero allow for different dexterity in one round/game? I can't think of a portable monitor that would work for this unless you had a 'behind the golfer' monitor and a hitting mat with the tee/hitting area in the center vs left/right side of the mat.
I was hoping at that price, they would have dynamic loft and strike location. I guess you can use strike tape or spray for strike location, but not having dynamic loft is a meh.
This may be a generic launch monitor projection question but does the projector have to be mounted to align to the center of the screen, and if so how does one place it so that the projector is not in the follow through path? I have a 9' ceiling, 12'8" of width, and 14' of depth so it seems like the projector could be in the way. Thanks.
As I'm currently well endowed with a lauch monitor and have reached the point where I hate hitting balls and only play golf courses, I'm wondering if the 43,000 stipulated courses at St-Georges de Beauce and Beauceville in Quebec Canada are part of the inventory. This is the only condition that will allow me to acquire the Garmin R-50 Thank You for the answer Alain Jacob
I would love to build a golf simulator and already have a gaming pc, but this looks like a really interesting product and the price seems really reasonable, I wonder if itll drive the price of other launch monitors down
Great Video! I have watched a lot of really famous golf instructors talk about getting the low point of the swing ahead of the ball to get the effortless power. I know trackman and Mevo+ with pro-package, as well as others, can show where the low point is relative to the ball. I would like to confirm, does the R50 show where the low point in the swing was relative to the ball? I really wonder why the R50 wouldn't be able to know that, based on how it works, if it does not. I might buy the R50 if it does, otherwise I think I have to buy the Mevo+ with pro-package. Thank You!
Also, I'd like to know what the power/charging options are. Can you charge/power it via USB-C battery pack with the appropriate Wattage capability or does it need AC power to charge and/or run not on the built in battery

Do you know whether the R50 will be geolocked? If I buy it in the U.S. (or from a U.S. based company), will it work in Europe? Or would I have to pay extra to get it unlocked for use in Europe.
Do you need to install “sticker dots” on your clubs like the Foresight Quad and GC3 launch monitors in order to catch information, swing speed, smash factor, etc.?
Does it connect to the Garmin club sensors (CT10s) so that it will automatically switch clubs? I hate that the R10 doesn't do that. It's really annoying to have to manually change the clubs on the monitor when you switch clubs

@ what is the process to switch from lefty to righty during simulator round play. With the Bushnell (running on internal battery) you move the unit and tap the screen to switch from right handed to left handed player. What is the process when using the Garmin.
I am guessing you will you at least need a Garmin Golf subscription, but its only $99 a year. Interested to see if they allow you to use the device without the simulated courses but still allow you to see the on screen metrics while using Awesome Golf or something else on your ipad/computer for the sim portion. I have the R30 and it works OK but the accuracy is pretty bad hitting into an outdoor net, it's very finicky about distance to the ball/net. This thing is pretty far out of my price range unfortunately at the momemt but I would buy it in a heartbeat if I had the dough.
Any idea if you’ll be able to drive this via computer rather than having to lean over constantly to use the touchscreen? I’m more likely to use GSPro than the built-in software, but wonder how the “Computer Experience” is.
Can you find out if the new Home Tee Hero simulator supports putting since the R50 can measure putts? I am specifically wondering how well the R50 works for putting and chipping since my Mevo+ misses a lot of chips and doesn''t work all that well for putting. I am thinking of selling the Mevo+ and getting the R50 but kind of sucks if we have to pay for third party E6 or others just to have putting simulated.
@ yeah I saw that elsewhere now you are apparently correct I thought it MIGHT do something like 1080p low considering it could run Garmin’s own sim but apparently not
I honestly dont have a good answer for that, short of picking it up and moving it after each shot. Which you can do, but for alignment purposes, its not ideal. This is one of the main sticking points with all optical systems.
When I go to Garmin's list of 43,000 golf clubs, it says contour and update. First of all, what does that mean? How can we be sure that this one is playable at home using the Garmin R-50?
Still going to need a gaming pc if you play the big boy softwares like GSpro. 4k ultra I'm sure is well beyond the chipset in this device. Also where's the protection cage?
Thank you for your review. I’ve just finished watching four other reviews and yours is the best. Question: as none of the reviews shows how to align the device, which is ultra critical for d-plane info, how do you align it?
@@stephenrose4582Correct. It has limits on how far either direction though. Default is parallel to front of device. Manual actually calls it out. I think Garmin actually released a video of their own showing it as well.
I recognize that some people will want the builtin simulator but I have no interest. If I want to use 3rd party I still need an additional computer or tablet. I'd be concerned about the ability for any substantial upgrade to the quality of the builtin simulator software especially as far as graphics goes. I imagine Garmin has included just enough processor and graphics capabilities to handle the needs of the simulator software as shipped. I would be interested in a a high end launch monitor which integrates with the Garmin ecosystem. If the launch monitor capability turns out to be as good as initial impressions hopefully they will release a version at a lower price point which doesn't include the builtin simulator.
Are there any subscription fees? I can't stand that about many of the latest launch monitors. Paying to enable connection, then paying for the 3rd-party software is hard to swallow.
I see it has the slo-mo impact camera but does the R50 measure strike point / impact location (heel/toe mm etc) and represent it graphically similar to a GC4 or Mevo+? Cheers
Great Preview! I'm curious about the native resolution out of the R50 (should you get a 1080 or 4K Projector) -- but you mentioned you still need a PC to run GS Pro. I'm assuming that means you'll still need all the same PC hardware to run third-party apps in 4K. Correct?
Yes. If you want to run GSPro you'll still need all the same stuff you'd need on any other device. As for resolution straight out of the R50, I had it hooked up to my 4k TV and it looked excellent. Better than I expected it to, tbh.
@@breakingeighty I contacted Garmin, and was told the resolution of the signal out of the HDMI port is the same as the screen on the unit - 800 x 1280.
@@SteveC-42 Thanks for this, and good to know! I would have expected it to be higher based on how it looks. Will make sure to mention in full review, and do a little more testing.
Do you know if they have plans to allow you to play local courses on the simulator? I use a Garmin watch to track my rounds and I think it would be very cool if you could play practice rounds on the simulator for courses that are local to the golfer using it.
Yes, with Home Tee Hero there's 42k courses built in - so chances are, it's got your home course. I was able to play my home track Pumpkin Ridge, and it works great.
Will it run GS Pro at the ultra setting ? That would be great, but I’m betting it will not have the graphics capabilities to accommodate the ultra setting.
@ Good to know. So far I haven’t heard anyone mention this. Obviously, that detracts from the main benefit of this unit as being completely self-contained.
@@williammurray7268yeah this is what I wanted to see after seeing the release. If it ran 3rd parties from the device, even on lite, I’d be very interested.
How does launch monitor know you are hitting a shot down the line vs slightly to the right, or left, if there is no aiming point in a screen in front of you?
My main question that I feel rarely gets answered is does it work on the course? If it is not perfectly flat and level. I only ever see them reviewed outdoors at the range
I am very interested in the subscription fees, if any. BLP is $3500 for club and ball data with $500 subscription. This will be a slam dunk choice for many if Garmin has no or low subscription fees.
@@Evan_Rodgers yeah, but I think this thing is pretty pointless without HTH. Their whole selling point is the built in screen, which is rendered totally useless if you're not using Garmin. Idk, they need to remove the dumb screen and chop the price in half.
So many tech questions that I assume only Garmin control/can answers. I assume this is an android system running their app and that can run HTH, resolution seems low 800x1200 on their spec, is that precise ? I wonder If you can you set custom resolutions to match screen sizes on the HDMI output. How much disk space for courses / if custom app will be possible Mirror touchscreen on a tablet or PC possible though wifi (maybe they will add on their app)? if you can have a usb-c monitor and see the same display/control it. if connecting a gaming controller in the usb-c allow you to move position on screen. if pairing controller Bluetooth/wifi will be possible in future. if you can charge the R50 though USB-C port with a 65w/100w charging block if connecting a usb-c to RJ-45 adaptor for network work, all of those are already possible on a tablet/phone most of the time. I assume it's just a question of if they will allow it.
That is a game changer for me. Being able to not have a net or impact screen and still get the complete sim experience at home. Whilst not having to dedicate a whole room to keep the family happy is such an awesome option. Would love to see some testing of this setup.
If it runs GSPro onboard then it's an interesting innovation. That said, we'd want to know it's graphics capability so that we know how long the built in computer will last. If it doesn't run those apps onboard then meh. Even if it does run it onboard it'd likely be much better to just connect to an external iPad or laptop both of which can be upgraded separately from the launch monitor.
@@btconnergaming IMHO that's a big miss. Honestly just boxing the guts of a touch-screen laptop running windows with a LM would have been better. I understand that they want to control the experience and keep costs down but without GSPro, E6, or a better sim ...at the price point they're at... it will unfortunately fail. Either that or they need to invest to get HTH up to par with GSPro or Foresight in order to win at the walled garden approach. If it were me I'd be in negotiations with GSPro to adapt a version to run natively on the box....but my guess is that would be cost prohibitive.
@@KayakFishingAddict I doubt they could even do that. I'm assuming the cpu and gpu inside this thing is way too weak for something like gspro or even a better version of HTH. But I agree, I don't think this is gonna do well. I would pay $2,000 for it without the screen.
If the name of my golf club is in the Home Tee Hero list, I can automatically play my course at home. I want to be sure before I pay 7762 $ Canadian taxes included. Thank you for taking the time to reply
Cool product…but I think gspro is a far superior golf software. Yes, you can use gspro with the R50, but in order to use 3rd party software, you have to use a projector and a computer. That kind of defeats the purpose for me. I think for some this is an incredible golf monitor, but I think I’ll stick with my Mevo plus with the pro package and club face that allows for right and left hand golfing seamlessly.
I would like to game the home tee hero that can chip and putt with good graphics just to try. I am curious if this would look good on a projected screen. It looks good on the TV, but thinking a GSPro at 1080p or 4K.
I would assume the accuracy is pretty much the same tech that's on the BLP....so you are essentially paying $2900 over a BLP just to strap an ipad to the top? Not sure why people are thinking this is such a huge value proposition? Its not even like you are saving on the annual subscription...you are still paying that to simulate on this device.
Random idea for an episode...a "how to" build your own simulator with this Garmin, ie, the turf, the screen you hit into, how does the screen and Garmin "talk" to each other. Kind of a simulator build for dummies.
Ok, and then obviously is it better than the quad as that’s a bold statement… can’t wait to see the data comparisons as I’m literally about to purchase a quad or gc3 … then this came and has thrown me
@@brendanlawlor2253 To be totally honest, I actually have never used a Quad extensively. So I'm not going to make any statements on which is better there - especially when it comes to accuracy, as I haven't yet done any tests to really dig into that. Those are coming soon though! But compared to GC3, even without the Sim aspect, I just love the screen and the user experience so much more than I do on the GC3. That said FSX Play is my favorite sim software.
Very cool and innovative but I wonder who it's really for - the budget conscious golfer who wants to hit indoors with minimal set up isn't going to spend $5k on a LM&PC and golfers with a $5k budget or slightly more are probably more hardcore and want a more "realistic" simulation using e6, gsPro, etc in which case this is just a very expensive connector. Buying lightly used for $3-4k might be a more enticing path. I still think it'll do well with all the hype.
I think they missed their opportunity due to the fact that the built in PC won't allow for GS Pro / E6 Integration from within as I understand. You'll still need an external pc for those.
@leosgolf this is also my understanding - if it can simulate HTH then it should have the hardware to run gsPro at least on 1080p. For me, that's the biggest miss, although that seems like a software issue or maybe some other legal reason.
..... If you can't afford a gaming PC you sure can't afford this. I can build a PC that will run GSpro in 4k for under $2500. Beyond that, I'd like to know if GSpro actually supports this because, as of right now anyway, you have to use a connector found online to use the R10 in GSpro. Also, Special balls needed?
Eh, idk. Only thing the built in screen can run is the Garmin app. All the 3rd party software requires another device. So the built in screen becomes pointless. I feel like the screen also exists to make it streamlined and mobile, but the size totally defeats that. Thing is a monster and way too large. This really looks like a $2,500 launch monitor that's only $5k because of this "all in one" aspect. I just haven't seen anyone asking for this. Would love to see them make one without the built in screen, that'd be much more appealing to the masses, cause I would pay $2,000 to $2,500 for it.
It's fantastic, no doubt. But as with all the launch monitors out there, it just depends on your needs and what you're looking for. Will dive into that a bit more in the full review. But yes, it's very, very good.
Man, I gotta start a RUclips channel so Garmin will send me stuff like this out of the blue lol. I’m gonna have to talk the wife into delaying the kitchen remodel in lieu of a golf studio 😂
@@bowl816 I’ve debated it for the past year+ on whether to build one, but I already have year around golf and my club has two courses that are less than 15 minutes from my house. It’s been hard to prioritize. But if Garmin wants to send me one for free, that might be the kick in the pants I need 😂
lol this vid alone has me ready to dump my gc3 and then upgrade to the Garmin IF it can run gs pro well and is accurate seems like a NO BRAINER in this price point
What they could have done is made it the size of the bushnell with the option to mount an iPad on its built in mount and have the app reside in the iPad.
The problem with that is what I run into with using my I pad with both the MLM2 and Mevo+, you need to make sure they are both fully charged. Sounds simple, but you wouldn't believe the number of times I get to the range all set up only to find out one of them is about to run out of battery. This would eliminate that issue.

When I go to Garmin's list of 43,000 golf clubs, it says contour and update. First of all, what does that mean?
How can we be sure that this one is playable at home
using the Garmin R-50?
There's an alignment mode. You set two balls in the specified area, and then setup to your target path. Overall, works well.
@ Thank you for your quick response. So that I correctly understand, you align the two balls in the direction to your target line?
@@stephenrose4582Correct. It has limits on how far either direction though. Default is parallel to front of device. Manual actually calls it out. I think Garmin actually released a video of their own showing it as well.
Does this work with TGC 2019? Can’t find anything saying yes or no.
Also, does it list any space requirements needed/recommended?
No I dont believe it works with TGC2019 at this point - at least not officially.
Any plans to update review of voice caddy sc4 pro?
Yeah for all the hype (which I think is valid), it's still definitely a little bit of a niche product. Not everyone will want the built in stuff.
Does the R50 allow you to record your swing using a second camera (similar to the way the Mevo+ does)?
I dont believe so.
Are there any subscription fees? I can't stand that about many of the latest launch monitors. Paying to enable connection, then paying for the 3rd-party software is hard to swallow.
It's $99/year to use Home Tee Hero, but there's no subscription necessary on the Garmin end to use third party software like GSPro or E6.
@@breakingeighty Speaking of E6, does it come with some free E6 courses, like the R10, and I think most competitors as well?
@@SalsaDan It comes with 5 e6 Connect mobile courses. So not much when compared to some other products.
i want a side by side comparison chart next to GC3, eye mini. to see all the data points measured and cost use on GSpro
Does it have 4k resolution?
So we had the R10 and now the R50… Anything planned for a price in between like R30 ? 😂
An r30 with no screen/built in software for 2/3k would be nice.
I was thinking the same when I saw the price.
Yes exactly!! No screen and can only display via hdmi or something for $2000... ill buy tomorrow
I see it has the slo-mo impact camera but does the R50 measure strike point / impact location (heel/toe mm etc) and represent it graphically similar to a GC4 or Mevo+? Cheers
No, at this point it doesn't have a specfic impact detection feature.
@@breakingeightyThis would be a great addition at this price point and would make this an out and out purchase
okay i understand you don't need a phone or ipad to use this thing, but *can* you connect one if you wanted it to be less bending over and tapping?
@ wow! That alone is huge for me. I may have found the unit to invest my money in. Thanks for the great content.
Will it run GS Pro at the ultra setting ? That would be great, but I’m betting it will not have the graphics capabilities to accommodate the ultra setting.
If you're running GSpro, you'll still need an external PC like any other launch monitor. The internal simulator is just for Home Tee Hero.
Camera integration possible?
How does launch monitor know you are hitting a shot down the line vs slightly to the right, or left, if there is no aiming point in a screen in front of you?
There's an easy alignment process you can setup to dial that in.
@@breakingeighty thanks!
My main question that I feel rarely gets answered is does it work on the course? If it is not perfectly flat and level. I only ever see them reviewed outdoors at the range
Thats because they arent meant to be used on the course. Youd have to be crazy to carry this thing out on the course and set it up for every shot ha.
@ haha yeah it is massive!
No dynamic loft?
I am very interested in the subscription fees, if any. BLP is $3500 for club and ball data with $500 subscription. This will be a slam dunk choice for many if Garmin has no or low subscription fees.
$100 a year
@@btconnergaming and that’s only if you want home tee hero. There’s no cost for GSPro connector.
How much disk space for courses / if custom app will be possible
Mirror touchscreen on a tablet or PC possible though wifi (maybe they will add on their app)?
if you can have a usb-c monitor and see the same display/control it.
if connecting a gaming controller in the usb-c allow you to move position on screen. if pairing controller Bluetooth/wifi will be possible in future.
if you can charge the R50 though USB-C port with a 65w/100w charging block
if connecting a usb-c to RJ-45 adaptor for network work, all of those are already possible on a tablet/phone most of the time. I assume it's just a question of if they will allow it.
Now that I was reading some reddit, better one, can you just bluetooth pair a mouse and put it a on stand so you don't have to bend over ?
By chance, is there a Discount Code?
Does it work with putting?
Hello! Did you happen to find out? I’d like to know also, thank you!
@@chezchezchezchez I didn't get a response here, but I think I saw in the video, or another video, where is does work with putting.
Will it work with practice/hollow golf balls?
I dont know the official answer to this, but I tested out a few shots with foam balls, and it seemed to register pretty accurately.
That is a game changer for me. Being able to not have a net or impact screen and still get the complete sim experience at home. Whilst not having to dedicate a whole room to keep the family happy is such an awesome option. Would love to see some testing of this setup.
Can it run GSPro without a gaming PC?
No, you’ll still need a gaming PC.
The only thing it can run on the built in screen is Garmin's stuff. All 3rd party software requires an iPad or PC.
@@btconnergaming Huge disappointment if this never changes ... simply not worth the money. May as well buy separate components
I'm interested in how it does with putting. I know, I know, "don't putt in simulators......" But I want the full experience.
It does putting. I'm not sure how WELL it does it. I'll test more, but I wouldnt go in expecting that aspect of it to be anything super amazing.
If the name of my golf club is in the Home Tee Hero list, I can automatically play my course at home. I want to be sure before I pay 7762 $ Canadian taxes included.
Thank you for taking the time to reply
GC Quad and Trackman test indoors now please :D !
Hook Me up with your Garmin guy… everyone needs there own golf range/course
GC3 dethroned?
I would assume the accuracy is pretty much the same tech that's on the BLP....so you are essentially paying $2900 over a BLP just to strap an ipad to the top? Not sure why people are thinking this is such a huge value proposition? Its not even like you are saving on the annual subscription...you are still paying that to simulate on this device.
Isn't the subscription on the BLP way more than $100 per year?
@@SalsaDan its $299 a year
Random idea for an episode...a "how to" build your own simulator with this Garmin, ie, the turf, the screen you hit into, how does the screen and Garmin "talk" to each other. Kind of a simulator build for dummies.
Believe me, I've thought about the best way to do different versions of that video for years. I just need a place to actually do the build ha.
Is it better than gc3
Short answer, yes. Will need to do more accuracy tests to see how it compares from that end.
That’s great, subscribed so will await the review comparison before purchasing :)
Can you use a wireless mouse with it?
I don't believe so. But if I learn otherwise, I'll update this.
@breakingeighty Thank you I appreciate all the work you do on your channel.
Probably the most important question is what data is measured and what is estimated.
As I understand it, its all measured.
How about taking it on the plane with you? I mean its pretty big and heavy and probably has a massive battery...
$5000 would buy me a lot of golf lessons … yeah basically i want it 😂
This is easily the best launch monitor on the market. Garmin scored an albatross with this one.
And you've had one for how long and tested how many shots?
It's fantastic, no doubt. But as with all the launch monitors out there, it just depends on your needs and what you're looking for. Will dive into that a bit more in the full review. But yes, it's very, very good.
@@McRipsyou literally know nothing about me or what I know. Keep yapping chuckles.

lol this vid alone has me ready to dump my gc3 and then upgrade to the Garmin IF it can run gs pro well and is accurate seems like a NO BRAINER in this price point
This is cool.
Take it to the course and play a round on the sim and in real life and compare!
@ sort of like you’d need to make sure the r50 is charged before going to the range
