It’s worth noting that Alan Joyce was not actually the one who commissioned the acquisition of Qantas’ first A380’s. That was actually done by Geoff Dixon. For the purpose of Comedy, I implied that it was actually Alan Joyce 🙂
I can remember spending many a Sunday afternoon in the international terminal bar. Back in the day the pubs weren't open on Sunday's, so a gang of us would regularly make the trek from Dandenong to enjoy a pleasant sunday afternoon.
I remember flying from Essendon to Canberra in a TAA Vickers Viscount in 1967. It was amazing and memorable! Then another highlight of my flying was a flight to Auckland NZ on a Qantas B707 from the not so old Tullamarine Airport and back on a B747-300 ! And another one.. a DC9 flight to Sydney with the great Ansett Airlines!
3 years on and even with a new APAC CEO, Melbourne AIrport is still doing an insane amount of work all at once. Redevelopment of T1 Security and Retail, Taxiway Zulu, Third Runway, Drop and Pick-up Zone Redevelopment, Duty Free Expansion in Arrivals Hall, T3 Baggage Hall Extension (w/ landside connection to T4), New T2 Baggage Building (w/ new associated systems) and T2 Amenities Upgrade. It would be interesting to do an update video in a few years just to document how much has changed in that time
Great video man! I believe Qantas received their A380 from 2008 and what you're referring to in 2005 was an Airbus test flight for the A380, as you said was the first Australian airport to be ready for the behemoth.
Great video about Melbourne Tullamarine airport. One thing you did not mention was the hugely popular Astrojet space centre and cinema that opened with the airport in 1970. In fact Melbourne airport might have been the first airport in the world to feature a cinema! Aircraft, space equipment and models were displayed and showcased (it may have even been sponsored by Alitalia airlines as one of the original international airlines to serve the airport). It was very popular in the school holidays, and just in general as Tullamarine airport was a destination itself for an outing back in the 1970s even for those that were not travelling, as many would drive there to spend the day plane spotting on the observation deck, before eating at the restaurant, exploring the astrojet complex, and then seeing a movie at the cinema. The movies shown there would be first run blockbusters - most famously the film ‘Airport’ from 1970 starring Dean Martin had an extended run there. It was located close to Terminal 2, at the junctions of Centre Road and Departure Drive. After closing in the late 1970’s or early 1980’s, it became an Ansett training base (RIP Ansett 🤣), before I think getting demolished completely as part of the airports recent renovations. BTW your videos are interesting, informative and well explained. Can I put in a request for you to make a video on Amsterdam Airport Schiphol next? 🙂✈️
Great video. Worked there for 12 years, operated the aerobridges that you show in the video. You have captured the history well. Only minor correction was in chapter 3, you are pointing to the incorrect new terminal. Concourse E (which the arrow points to) was already established. It was councourse G which is the lowest one on the video :) Keep up the good work :)
Really informative video, Melbourne Airport will clearly keep moving forward and it’s great to see they are considering the wider environment. I live under the Heathrow flight path so find these videos fascinating! 👏👏
The worst part about that luxury shopping precinct is that is has cut off access to the floor to ceiling windows that used to be there. The old fit out did look a bit bogan with its purple lighting, but at least you see outside.
I must say, that’s one of my favourite things that I expect to see at an airport, is a floor to ceiling window that allows better views out to the tarmac.
The runway extension for Essendon was to accomodate the boeing 707 four engine jets, at least Essondon airport could be reached on public transport unlike Tulla which true to form for back then was built far far away only accessable by car, just like VFL park.
@@xthompsongunx finance and strategic planning - I worked for AN from 94-01 and if memory correct he worked on the BRG (business review group) in around 96/97 the BRG was the restrucuring of the company and they launches the "Destination 2000" initiative (the goal was to transform the business by 2000
That’s a great question. The flight number was AZ723 from Rome to Melbourne, I believe the Aircraft was a 707, but it’s hard to find out how accurate that is. It may well have been a DC-8!
Just a few points, you got the piers around the wrong way, the Ansett 2nd pier is on the south, qantas 1999 expansion is north east. And it’s eye-ahh-tah. If you’re gonna do it, do it right!
APAC is correctly used in the video as it's the owner of both Melbourne Airport and Launceston Airport, but each airport is operated by an airport lessee company, in which APAC has a controlling interest i.e. Australia Pacific Airports Melbourne or APAM

Very well, it definitely worked for me

what a fantastic video! the "RIP Ansett" thing was sad (but funny at the same time) as I use to work for them ...
Oh wow! Tell me more! What role did you hold with them?
@@xthompsongunx I was on the Ramp.. moved to Cabin Cleaning later on, was there from 95 to 01..
nice video! a great sequel to the first one

Really liked your Auckland airport vid so I started watching the rest of the vids so I then subscribed
Excellent video my friend! You seem far more knowledgeable than most channels talking about similar subjects.

Sad the airport closed the observation deck.

Awesome video
Best vid so far ❤️
Do Wellington airport next
This video is amazing!
Thanks man!
Hey Thompson! You should do an entire video on the Parkroyal Melbourne airport. That’s where they park the freighters right?
Tom I love this
Can you do Adelaide airport please!
Hope more passenger boarding bridges to replace existing staircases in the domestic airport boarding gates.
I like how Allen Joyce is also the CEO of Qantas
I’m telling you man there’s something sus about it 😂
@@xthompsongunx lol 😂
How dont you have more subscribers theys vedeos are so well edited great job
Great video! I thought the rise and fall of Tiger would have been noteworthy though?
That will definitely be included in a video coming soon! Currently working on a video about Virgin Australia and Tiger.
Can you do Gold Coast airport next
Wish you mentioned the 'tiger airways' arrival terminal which was in a literal shed where T4 now is. Was awful and kinda hilarious
Lyell Strambie also worked for Ansett :)
Now there’s something I didn’t know! Very nice! Do you know what his role was at the airline?

@@karennoyce1015 very nice! And I guess the business was certainly “transformed” shortly after 2000… 😂
Would love to know what stops Alitalia DC9 made from Rome to Melbourne 😳
Did they really use this type or was it a 707 🙄

I can't believe that when they built T4 they didn't include airbridges.
I mean there’s only two or three now
It’s for a budget Airline
Big boi friendly lol
Next airport - Christchurch airport
