You forgot to mention Santa Claus. I'm an atheist, but I still believe in Santa. As opposed to God, Santa is a pretty cool dude. He never gets angry and makes it rain until almost everyone drowns or sends people to burn forever in a pit. And people don't hate each other and commit murder and do torture and fight and kill in Santa's name either. And unlike God, Santa at least actually delivers something tangible that I can really see (and who cares how he manages to do it). Unlike with God, there is actual observable evidence of Santa's existence in the form of all those wonderful gifts that somehow manage to appear for happy little children to find under their Christmas trees on Christmas morning. Way to go Santa! Keep up the good work. See you again in December.
Joe Vignolo Santa, aka st Nicolas was a Bishop I believe in Europe He tossed food and clothing down the chimneys of the poor, and did so anonymously. OUR VERSION OF SANTA with the sleigh pulled by reindeer is just another pagan symbol ( reindeer are a pagan symbol) stolen by the RC church and Constantine to convert the pagans to Christianity
I saw that our neighbours had made their Christmas tree made out of green glassed beer bottles, I went round and shook their hands, I also said that drinking an entire tree's worth of beer must have been fun. They assured me it was!
Back when I was a Christian, and very devout, I met a very devout Christian historian. She had worked for years with other Christian historians to make as accurate a historical timeline for the bible as they could. Their research showed that Jesus would have been born some time in January, not December. It is believed that Christmas was adopted into Christianity and said to celebrate Jesus' birth to make it easier to convert Pagans. Personally, I think any holiday is a great excuse to spend money on those I love and enjoy my time with them. I don't give much thought to the "purpose" of these holidays, because I simply don't care. Spending time off with family, and buying items when normally you wouldn't, is a great way to reduce stress and bond, that's good enough for me.
***** Uh... Did you even watch the video? Christmas begins and ends its connection to Jesus with the name. Almost all of how we celebrate Christmas (the trees, wreaths, yule logs, presents, etc.) are pagan historically. Jesus may be what makes YOU happy about the holidays, but he has nothing to do with how most Americans celebrate the holiday.
One major plot hole in the story of Jesus: According to Luke & Matthew, Jesus' genealogy started with Adam down to Abraham down to David down to Joseph. But wasn't it stated in the bible that Mary was a virgin when she gave birth to Jesus? So wasn't he derived from the line of David? Big plot hole in the fictional story there.
Not surprised. They love taking from others beliefs. Being Pagan I just smiled the whole time and knew I was in the right. I was once Christian and figured out the lies and moved on.
It's very amusing to use Xmas and be corrected. People of faith don't understand that people are not putting down their faith but actually going along with it. I tend to you use happy holidays to cover the all three holidays. Most people accept it as a good tiding others will go out of their way to reply Merry Christmas. It's humorous to watch people get worked up over something so trivial. Enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work. Happy Holidays to you and your family.
Thank you, Thinking Atheist! This is superb. There is of course much more that could be said about the appropriation of Pagan and pre-Christian practices, but you've provided a primer for any thinking person to pursue the historical truth. Well done, indeed.
***** Conflicting "gospels" do a hell of a lot more to disprove Jesus than to prove him. I'm much happier now that I'm not constantly worrying about an invisible sky wizard constantly judging me. I never plan to subscribe to any religion ever again.
+History And Some Other Things I really respect you. You proudly announce with your head held high that you do what every other believer does. You interpret the bible and your faith to match exactly what you want it to match. You take what you like (Jesus being real) and leave what you don't agree with (creation). How fucking refreshing. Do you believe that the men that wrote the bible were inspired by your god? If you do, as most believers do, you stated that your all knowing, all powerful god made statements that are not true and that his word is filled with errors. I'd love to hear how you reconcile that. How the guide that we're supposed to use as his creation to get to heaven is filled with errors.
I´ve been feeling a bit down of late but boy did this video bring a smile on my face:) I´ve been listening to the christ folk crying about us atheists stealing xmas agaian and it just makes me sick. So, a big big thanks to The Thinking Atheist for brightening my day:) Also warm and loving greetings from Finland to all u American atheists. Good luck with tryining to educate ppl and have a wonderful XMAS:) May the new yr bring more Americans to the world of reason. Hyvää Joulua ja Uutta Vuotta
I'm really looking forward to the Xmas holidays - with good food with family and friends and reading and playing fairy tales of Disney, santa and Jesus!
Thank you for compiling all the sources of Christmas traditions here, so I don't have to run all over the Internet when I want to show them to someone!
Great vid. Glad you added in the info about the contradictions found all throughout the new testament. I had forgotten a lot of that info. It was cool to see some new stuff thrown in there as well. Again great vid, I will totally use this in response to my christian relatives if need be. Happy holidays everyone!
You said on your recent podcast that you still say "Merry Christmas" to people and not "Happy Holidays". There's nothing wrong with either in my opinion, but saying Happy Holidays to someone ensures that regardless of their religious or secular views at this time of year, you've got it covered. Far from being insulting, it's inclusive. I love this video - life is so much better when you know the facts.
1:05 In Sweden we still call it Jul (like Yule). Our Santa is called "Tomten". "Tomtar" were little gnome like beings in old folk myth that were quite grumpy but liked animals and helped in the barn if you were nice to them, on Jul it was (and still may happen for fun) common to put out some porridge to the farms tomte. We still have a tradition of eating Jul-porridge at Jul-morning.
Interesting and useful to put together so many of what are clear mis-understandings. A couple hmmms I have wondered about. You talked about the lineage of 'christ'...what seems clear to me is why would early christian writers (not the apostles I'm afraid) have gone to so much trouble to claim Jesus was related to King David & Abraham 'through' his 'father Joseph' IF Joseph was not in fact his father? 2nd: I have read that Dec 25 was chosen by some Christians quite early on as a good day to acknowledge Christ's Birthday, and instead of pagan gift-giving, the 'faithful' could give gifts to Christ (which of course meant the 'gifts' were given to the early Church). Aha! I said to myself, now that makes lots of sense...Peace
Its like Christians think they have a domain on the very concepts of enjoying and relaxing during the end of the year, spending time with loved ones, receiving and generously giving gifts, and having a good time with traditions. We can do that with or without supernatural interference or belief, thank you very much!
[3] Solomon represents kingship (as he was a king of ancient Israel). Nathan represents the prophet element of Christ (as he was a prophet). Both Solomon and Nathan were children of David. Joseph descends from Solomon. Mary descends from Nathan. Matthew records Josepeh's bloodline. Luke records Mary's bloodline. In Luke 2:1 Caesar Augustus makes the decree. This decree is made when Cyrenius rules over Syria (verse 2). Mary is a pregnant woman. Wanting to care for her, Joseph takes her with him.
I celebrate Christmas not for the religion aspect, but for the holiday itself. It's a time to get with your family on the coldest night and celebrate what makes them awesome by giving them presents or just your time. I'm an atheist but I still decorate my tree, have snowman competitions with my neighbors and even carol with my local church. It's all for fun and nothing else.
I am writing this on Thanksgiving Day. Instead of me expressing gratitude to an imaginary God, I want to express my gratitude to you Seth. Thank you for your advocacy of rationality, and I especially want to thank you for this video. Seth, long time fan....I address many of the things you bring up in this vid as well in my vid. You did bring up one point that I think is very important. That is that our government was able to, and did make the farcical birth of a specific deity recognized by law in 1870! And here we are now...150 yrs later....and it is still recognized by our government!
Great overview of the origins of this holiday. I celebrate a few days off work, great food and reason to gather friends and family. The consumerism is the sad part of course. Spirits(liquid kind), food, music, family and friends. No baby Jeebus for us.
Excellent wrap-up of the issues, Seth. I would just correct one thing. At the time of the Septuagint translation, it's safe to assume that παρθένος (parthenos) actually meant the same thing as עלמה (almah) - that is, a young woman. The meaning of "virgin" apparently crept into the use of παρθένος only later. In classical Greek, παρθένος is a common word for "young woman," and it's even used in the Septuagint in other places for girls who already had sexual knowledge. Best holidays wishes!

Thanks for sharing that... I can see how before we advanced enough to dissect and identify that they would believe... I have not, however, come across modern day Christianity preaching that the rib was regenerated... Odd as it may seem, I learned a great deal about evolution from a church school I had attended and this issue came up, but the teacher said "if you lose a limb it doesn't happen to your offspring..." I'm just surprised that Seth would ask that question after 30 years of faith...
I would love to see a video on Christian state laws in the US. During the 70's when I was learning law, South Carolina had a law that made photography illegal. I honestly try to help atheists, and the response is usually much less than a "thank-you." Either way, I get rewarded well for my services, Jesus said; Matthew 5:11-12: “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Thanks people, ...and Merry Christmas. From Canada, with love.
I don't think there is any payments made at all when you use adblock. Thats why I don't use it when I look at videos from "the good guys" but turn it on if I watch creationist videos and similar. :)
Fun fact: In many Nordic countries we still use the original pagan name for Christmas, Yule (Jól) :)
RE White Jesus
The best way I ever heard it put was like this: "Jesus would have looked more like Sadam Hussein than George W. Bush."
I'm a fan of Xmas as well, and I am SO calling all trees Baldur trees at every opportunity this year.

This was so much fun to watch, you leave me no choice but to share it with all my Christian friends! Merry Xmas!
You forgot the best part about Jesus' lineage. It is through _Joseph, who wasn't even his father_ because of the whole virgin birth thing xD
Christianity has Pagan D.N.A., after all!
Not surprised. They love taking from others beliefs. Being Pagan I just smiled the whole time and knew I was in the right. I was once Christian and figured out the lies and moved on.
CHRISTMAS - Tis the season to buy crap with money you don't have to impress people who mostly don't care.
I stopped doing that long time ago... :)
Broth3r John LOVE IT😂
This was great. Thanks for the upload. I watch it yearly.
i love this video every year it comes out

Good to know we're honouring the most sacred of Christmas traditions: going on about while it's still November. :)
Dear Seth, please send this to Sarah Palin
I need to remember to share this when it is closer to giftmas.
Concise, entertaining, wonderfully produced.
Nice one, Seth. :)
It's not surprising that the bible isn't consistent, it's a bit disturbing that people don't notice this fact though.
Love it! Thanks Seth! Happy Thanksgiving!
probably the best vid I've seen on this topic.
I like this version a lot.

Forgot to mention that most appreciate Xmas for the the time off from a job...unless Xmas falls on Saturday.
@TheThinkingAtheist Please, produce more of these kind of videos, and also animation videos, I miss it!

nice job seth. i'm just curious, what video editing software do you use? thanks! happy xmas.
OH YEAH! NOW THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN ABOUT!! LOVE THIS VIDEO!! Probably the best video on youtube,........EVER!!!!!!!!
As a pagan , thank you. Love this.

Continuity. It's important for a believable story! LOL

This one has fully caught my attention, I'm fighting the urge to read ahead, because It's much more intriguing hearing it from mr creepy pasta himself

It's just as good as it was last year. I sense the beginnings of a tradition here :D
Keep the X in Xmas!
would it be correct to write "Xmas" in a composition or anything like that? (Inocent question!)
I don't think there is any payments made at all when you use adblock. Thats why I don't use it when I look at videos from "the good guys" but turn it on if I watch creationist videos and similar. :)
AdBlock for Firefox. I haven't seen an add on RUclips in years.
