  • Lesser Black Back Gulls and the law
You must follow the letter of the law when shooting. Shooting gulls can be a confusing subject for a lot of shooters because people aren’t aware of the law.
The gulls shot on this particular day were lesser black-backed. These gulls can still be shot under the general licence if there is a valid reason to shoot them. I was covered under the general licence because the lesser black-backs were doing agricultural damage by eating the sheep feed.
Another very important thing to remember is that there are numerous species of gulls in the UK but you can now only shoot the lesser black-backed. It is essential to ensure that your quarry identification is accurate as many gulls look similar. If in doubt, DON’T SHOOT. If you are unaware of the law and how it affects your shooting situation, visit www.basc.org.uk/shooting/general-licences/.
It was clear to see large numbers of crows and gulls building up around the feeders. The worst affected area happened to be by the road and underneath a crisscross of telephone wires.
I weighed the job up for the best plan of attack and ran through it with the farmer to check his views. The idea was for the shepherd to move the sheep feeder away from the wires and the road, taking it further down the field into a better location to set the ambush.
This is where it pays to have a good working relationship with the farmers or landowners where you shoot. I do my best to help them so they will do their best to help me. This is also in their interest as it allows me increase the chances of a larger bag.
With the sheep feeder down the field, I decided to set the hide up the night before shooting to make things easier with the early morning start.
I set the hide up in the broken-up hedge. The sheep feeder was roughly 30 yards out into the field. The following morning I arrived, added a few bits of natural foliage to the hide and scattered a handful of full-bodied crow decoys around and on top of the sheep feeder. All that was left was to get the cameras rolling, jump into position and see what the day would bring.
