I use exclusively cheap pedals (nothing more than $100) and it sounds pretty good to me. Maybe it doesn’t sound as good as it would if I splurged on more expensive pedals but I’m happy with it. They’re great if you want to try something for the first time or you just want a clone of a classic circuit to get a classic sound.
Some great explanations. On headphones the more expensive one sounded better to me but not 8750 dollars better. Some great tips however for setting up the pedalboard and great to see Tyler playing a strat. Like really great.
A while back I bought that same Echo Square pedal from Donner to use on a “practice” or “garage jam” spare board. After using it for a while, it now resides on my main board along with my Boss DD3. I also have their Harmonic Square and use it as an Octaver/harmony pedal. My only real criticism has nothing to do with the sound of these units, but with the build quality of the small, plastic knobs/dials. I don’t think they would hold up to the rigors of live gigging but for the price, I guess it’s one of the compromises to consider. That being said, the sound quality and features are well-above their price point.
The sound is in your head & hands...and if you know how to achieve a certain sound you can get pretty much the same result with cheapo gear as well. The difference is all about features and nuances that will be lost once in band context. I bet no one could ever hear the difference from a Ce2 to one of the many china clones while a band is playing in a pub. I remember I was shocked seeing Beta Aivin pedals after hearing amazing sounds in a pub . The guitar player was a monster but poor...amp (Mesa express) and guitar were borrowed from his friends. He only had those 3 Beta Aivin pedals: distortion, chorus and delay, using the amp only for cleans.
the universe is telling me I need to buy some Donner pedals... I went looking last week, and I kept seeing these little Donner pedals for 40/50 bucks... and considering the old school pedals I used to buy are now around $200, these little guys caught me eye. So I began watching comparison videos, demos, etc, for about 3 days. some a couple years old, some a few months old... And now here you are doing another featurette... so yeah, I'm gonna start my donner board build asap.
I owned an electric guitar which is strat type and no brand (China made). Haven't played the guitar almost 2 years now because i suck at it. Good things is i still watch all guitar related videos, which is convince me that I still love play guitar. Probably getting a brand new good guitar will boost my spirit again. 😬😬
I‘ve seen guys trashing other guitars players on a 90 bucks Epiphone paired with a Roland Cube 30. I‘ve seen guys making a fool of themselves with a multi thousand dollar rig. It‘s all in the skill. Get a guitar that makes you want to pick it up, buy a Kemper and you‘re set for eternity. The only thing you need to add is practice, practice and again practice.
I have been buying kits from BYOC instead of pre-fabricated pedals. They sound fantastic and you get more bang for your buck. The pedals almost all have mini toggles to switch between different options like Germanium or LED or Silicon and so on. Not only that but you get to build the pedal yourself and also paint it which is very fun and educational among other things. Give it a try. It's very easy and you can do it with your kids if they're into music or electronics. Do not buy the kits off wish though or the cheap ones on amazon unless you're an advanced builder because they have little to no instruction and you're more likely to fail. I failed 3 wish pedals in a row. Decided to try one from BYOC and the instructions were so detailed and they walk you through each part to identify and make a list of what you have so you know you have everything you need. And the instructions are a PDF.
I have only two pedals, a Boss RC-5 and a HX Stomp, so literally, I have ALL the pedals. Would I buy a Klon? No, I don’t play guitar for a living and even if I did, I still wouldn’t. Would I buy Donner pedals? Sure, if they were in stock. I tried to buy a Donner Looper pedal, every time I went buy one they were out of stock, so I bought the RC-5 instead. I really liked the tune at the end of video, very nice!
I think the Klon makes the biggest difference in tone here, but it's also not a $8750 difference. Or even $4,970 difference. Both sound great and it's amazing what manufacturers like Donner have been able to do for people on a budget these days. I had around a $1,300 pedal board before I sold it all off and got a Helix. I started realizing to get the pedals I wanted it was going to be a lot more than the Helix -- which already has all of them.
Very cool video. I am a big fan of Donner, particularly the Circle Looper. What makes you happy and you have fun with is the most important part of the equation. If you have all the expensive equipment just for the sake of having it but you don't actually like it, it's a waste of time. If you have the lower priced gear and love it, you'll probably play every day and have a blast. To each their own here.
Make fun of me if you want but since 2005 I've been using multi-effects pedals. First one was a zoom g2 that quit on me after 14 years and I replaced it with a zoom g1 four. Ive gotten every tone I wanted out of both. The trick to a multi-effects pedal is patience. You can get whatever your favorite band's tone is provided you take the time to dial it in and it can take awhile to do it. The other issue is making sure your patches are in the right places.
The older and more experienced I’ve gotten the more I gravitate towards simple reverb delay and a good drive section. Honestly no one cared when I had a bigsky, micro cosm, king of tone, avalanche run or even my chase bliss mood and thermae Eventually sold it all to get my dream amp and cab Mark iiC+ It’s been 2 years since I bought another pedal and honestly don’t want to ahaha. Just my good ole simple reverb and delay
Whenever he breaks out the Klon its gonna sound great....and i think that is the main difference between the pedal board sounds. I would like to hear pedal board 1 with the Klon....
I always watch this channel on my 75” Samsung and through my home theater system in stereo mode. I will tell you the more expensive pedals do have more depth on my end. Not to say the cheaper set sounds bad. Maybe to a lot of folks listen on Beats headphone or some other garbage can’t tell the difference but on big floor standing speaker and good gear I can. They expensive pedal just have a little more. Are they worth the price in the end, probably not but they’re definitely more pleasing to the ears.
I have a 3 in 1 delay/reverb/mod from donner. The more expensive pedals will give a bit of a better tone, but $50 for what is essentially 9 different effects, and they sound good, I’m not complaining.
I just broke down a $2000 pedalboard and bought a Headrush. It’s easier, sounds better and does more. That said, I kept my Donner Yellow Fall delay. I love that thing. Also kept my Blues Driver 2 and my Vox wah. Somethings you just gotta have.
I love donner pedals... have the distortion, overdrive, octave, and the looper.... looper has 90min worth of loop space, i suck at looping but still fun
My pedalboard is a combination. I have a few pedals I use a lot that are more expensive and heavier built and some I may not use once or twice during a night that are good sounding cheap pedals. The big difference I’ve seen with cheap pedals is they don’t have the quality of switches/jacks/pots so if you’re stomping on and adjusting them a lot they may not hold up as well. I’ve actually taken a couple of Berhinger pedals that sounded great and rehoused them with a better stomp switch. By the way I agree with the two amp idea. I ran a BF Fender and a tweed or British together for a long time. The mids of a tweed/vintage style Marshall with the big top and bottom of a Blackface sounds huge.
Surprised to not see the C-Blocker and something by Strymon . I figure good hands, a good or excellent guitar and then the signal chain . I have the guitars covered .. the rest needs work . Nice outro playing Tyler .
I use my vox valvetronix 100watt amp and a zoom pedal. It’s something I’ve heard hear snobs chuckle at in te past. But seriously my brother and I agree that we created the best clean tone ever on the amp, then the zoom came in and gave us an ensemble sound and now it sounds like 4 guitars are playing when I play, and frankly I can only assume that there’s be marginal difference on a multi pedal expensive set of pedals.
I actually had a Boss multi-effects pedal that I used for about 2 years (still mess around with it sometimes) before getting into the standalone analog pedals
I'm more of a hybrid guy, using Hx stomp for Amps, Delay's and reverbs. I like using analog drives and modulations. But I can definitely get away with just the HX Stomp and a 8 Butten midi controler
Yes, I wonder why guitar players avoid multi-effects pedals and instead assemble bulky boards of simple-effect pedals. VOX makes a pedal that has 100 tweakable effects, tuner, and its own expression pedal, which sells for less than US$100. Isn't that good enough for 99.99% ?
I bought the donner echo square last week and it's great! I bought the fuzz seeker at the same time and both are great little pedals, really solid and they sound awesome. So cool to see the budget pedals in this vid - China can sure churn out some decent stuff now!
As I've said on 60 Cycle Hum's affordaboard videos, there is no such thing as an unusable tone or pedal. It all comes down to how yo use it. I absolutely love my DOD FX69 Grunge. It's been the basis of my tone since '94. Some people absolutely hate that pedal, some people love it. I'm of the mind, a guitarist who knows how to use his gear, even crappy gear, can get good sounds out of it. As for this shootout, both rigs sound great, but I actually prefer the Donner rig. It has a warmer sound to my ears, but overall, they are actually complementary to each other.
Both pedal boards sound good, the Donner set has nice qualities at that price point....But that Klon just makes everything sound like "Butter"...so rich, silky smooth, sweet and deep.
I was noticing he’s copped the pick tucking technique. No shame, not dissing. Just noting the influence Chris is already having on guitar. And it’s a good thing.
They're both great, but Chris has phenomenal feel and expression. He's truly something special. Imitation is the highest form of flattery. Yet Chris's videos only get 50-100K views?
Have to confess to being one of those guys who has a $5k pedalboard. Maybe I fell for the marketing BS. Genuinely preferred the cheaper one here. Maybe there is a lesson here for me.
The only difference really is the klon, I think the donner pedals are a lot more worth it, I think I would use them with some better stuff (like Friedman drive, etc) in my next pedal board
I dont care if its a known brand or the cost. For me its the sound, function, and build quality thats important. If I can use it reasonably without it breaking, it sounds good, and does what I need it to do, then I'm all for it. I have some awesome pedals under $50 each, and also over $300 each. Same method for guitars and amps
Just watched this, but last night I actually just ordered a delay, chorus, distortion and wah pedal from donner. I’m looking forward to trying them out.
I have 6 pedals, probably around 250 dollars total, and honestly I can achieve nearly every tone I like. Maybe a little more variety in distortion would be nice but it’s really just fine.
I love Tyler, love the video, love budget pedals such as Donner and Joyo. But personally I think more of us. (At least myself) tend to mix the two boards. We all have our favorite pedals. I have some (definitely not top tier but great pedals I spent a bit more than needed on) JHS @+, I run a MXR Carbon Copy, as well as a Way Huge Aqua-puss. I play a lot of country. So overdrive, slap back delay and a decent more ambient delay help a lot. I play a Mid tier Orange amp. Love their distortion. But don’t use much, mainly OD. So my “distortion” channel. I use as a higher treble setting (since primary channel is pretty flat) both sound amazing. But using the second channel as a top boost helps with tele twang. As well as livening up a darker semi hollow. But allows me to go back and forth. But cuts the distortion. So I have a Donner Dark Mouse (Rat clone) for distortion when I need it. Being country compressors come into play. Haven’t found one I’m set on. So I have a Joyo Dyna Comp. as well as a Joyo Vinatage Phase. Not intending to give a rig rundown. So I apologize for that. But as I initially stated. This second board is a KILLER setup for the price. But feel a mix of the two would be a cool video as I feel many of us do that more. Have our main go to effects. But fill the versatility roles with more budget friendly options
I'm with ya there. I use a fulltone 69 for the bulk of my fuzz needs but for the times I need something tighter I use a cheap rat clone too (mooer black secret). Sounds better than a standard rat at guitar center for half the price! One of the best lessons to learn as a player is that good sounds can be had a virtually any price point
I use to have that kind of Noise supressor, and it was first pedal what I ever bought. Yesterday I give My compressor away and change that 2 pedals, one Noise supressor, and one multieffect pedal by Zoom.
Hey Tyler, not a criticism just a question. Did you dial in the expensive board brighter for a difference or was it not possible to get to quite the same clarity on the Donner setup? Just wondering. Great vid regardless All the best 👍✌😎
Not a guitar player, but I used to have a collection of pedals for cuz I could get them for next to nothing from pawn shops. And they were still useful when you plugged synths or tape loops or, you know, whatever into them. Now I have some DIY modular synth gear and a couple of those Donner pedals could be useful. Especially because I'm using 1/4" jacks on the modules.
@@FlorianGuitar85 One might not be poor and not be able to afford either. It's a matter of priorities. Some people like to prioritize going on vacation every year, and other people prioritize fixing their house and getting idk a new washing machine. Either will say they can't afford the opposite (the vacation one will say they can't afford a new washing machine, and the washing machine guy will say he can't afford the vacations). It's all about priorities
I get we're trying to make people that can't afford expensive pedals feel better but there's a pretty big difference between these two. And this is coming from someone that couldn't afford nice pedals for a very long time. If there wasn't a big difference then why would Tyler use an expensive board and spend $5,000 on one pedal?? "Video sponsored by Donner" makes the reasoning for this video much clearer, I believe it's just to get the name out there more. And fyi I do agree Donner pedals are awesome and I'm glad to see them getting put out there for any guitarists that can't afford to spend thousands. Anything to help inspire young talent I think is great! And for the record: I love Music Is Win. I watch this channel daily and am even subscribed to guitar Super System. I just don't agree with this video
Just bought the Donner Echo Square, Verb Square, and Tutti Love Chorus, and other than some ground loop problems I need to work out, these are decent pedals for the money.
Honestly... I don't even think you need a nice sound system to tell the difference between these two set ups for my ears. I could hear it just on my laptop speakers alone. I'm not even talking about the effects themselves. I could hear it in the signal. The tone and overtones were so much more rich and audible with the pricey board; it just sounded more full. I'm gonna listen again with my in ears but even with crappy speakers it was pretty apparent that the cheap board just sounded like the signal was degraded. It's just gotta be the component quality. As long as a pedal has good guts and no cheap parts in them, it doesn't matter if they're $150 or less. Cheers for the video, Tyler. Always clicking your content! I love your message though... just buy what you want and play it how you want to play it as long as it pleases you! Music is for everyone.
This is pretty much why I have a G System and a Nova Drive plugged in Midi. 99% of what I want to do is in there and can be set up in advance with very good quality, noiseless output. Can each individual pedal effect be better? Sure as it depends on what you play. But it works well for everything.
Just to let people know, all the parts that matter for the sound of a pedal, all are sourced from the Same manufacturer. They all come from china or india, so what makes a pedal great is the design, I got like 10 klon clones I personally hand made. They all sound similar when cranked you can't tell the difference. But when used as like a transparent type over drive, the circuit is what matters, the resistors used and value of caps. I find pedals that are more mid to low driven sound best, that's why the clone sounds so good it the openness of the sound, it's not over brite and it's not to bassy, it's perfect. Just to color the sound and boost alittle.
tbh the exive one dound better but doesn't mean you have to have it, buy watever you want, most of my pedals are eather used, cheap or midrange because thats the sound i like
I love when you play that Satin Nitro Honeyburst Strat! Looks and sounds great! Are those the stock pickups? I have one but bought it used and it didn't have stock pickups. Someone had put in SD Rails set (cool/vintage/hot) which was okay. I have Texas Specials in it now, but I do love the way yours looks and sounds.
I think guitar pedals start hitting diminishing returns between 50-80 bucks, but the expensive pedals sound better (if not significantly so), especially in a solo'd context. in a band mix the difference is diminished, but I don't get pedals for people to listen and ascertain the difference, I get them so that I can enjoy feeling the difference.

Essentially made your own dotted 8th delay with your donners 😅 I dig it
GREAT presentation! The point that you make is often lost on many players, and I like to mix both cheap, and 'special'- often with great results...
the universe is telling me I need to buy some Donner pedals...
Your always an inspiration Tyler 🔥🔥🔥 that outro was amazing
I have some pedals I’m in love with, but I now know of some cheap dates that are worth having. Very cool. Thanks Tyler
I'm not even gonna lie, I prefer the sound of Pedalboard #1, it just has more flavor
proves that sometimes, cheap can be even better than expensive
I‘ve seen guys trashing other guitars players on a 90 bucks Epiphone paired with a Roland Cube 30.
I‘ve seen guys making a fool of themselves with a multi thousand dollar rig.
It‘s all in the skill.
Get a guitar that makes you want to pick it up, buy a Kemper and you‘re set for eternity. The only thing you need to add is practice, practice and again practice.
@@flowryan5829 one of my favorite metal bass players uses a beat up Squire p-bass.
That's ok man, everyone's entitled to their opinion no matter how wrong
"ok let's have a look on the cheap pedalboard. Right, so first here is a pedal that allows to play through two amps. " That's funny.
when you added the reverb and started playing I instantly made the "stank face" - damn that sounded good!
Honestly no one cared when I had a bigsky, micro cosm, king of tone, avalanche run or even my chase bliss mood and thermae
Eventually sold it all to get my dream amp and cab
Mark iiC+
It’s been 2 years since I bought another pedal and honestly don’t want to ahaha.
Just my good ole simple reverb and delay
Whenever he breaks out the Klon its gonna sound great....and i think that is the main difference between the pedal board sounds. I would like to hear pedal board 1 with the Klon....
The main difference was the mic positions. Around neck on board 1 and around bridge on board 2.
Or the cheap pedal board with a clone Klon: the NUX Horseman or Joyo Tauren. The Donners are NUX's anyway.
Have you got another video on your DAW setup, and amp simulation? Soo many cool things going on in this video!
Meanwhile me rocking the free plugins in my free trial of logic x
FYI. I bought the Donner tape and stacked my delays. I like it a lot. 😃 what matters most is the person running the three!!!!!
Surprised to not see the C-Blocker and something by Strymon . I figure good hands, a good or excellent guitar and then the signal chain . I have the guitars covered .. the rest needs work . Nice outro playing Tyler .
I like the Nike vs Under Armor vibe... of course the demo and playing are both stellar!
The-Multi-Effects-Pedal guys, assemble..
Assembled, HX Stomp user.
I actually had a Boss multi-effects pedal that I used for about 2 years (still mess around with it sometimes) before getting into the standalone analog pedals
Always a multi guy. I usually need to change multiple sounds at once and I'm not good enough to do the Eric Johnson magic tap dance.
This is one of the best Guitar Solos i‘ve ever heard
Beautiful
Great Video. Do you feel more inspired on either one? Also, have you done any videos on right hand pick tucking yet?
Your tune at the end of the video is absolutely beautiful!
I'll take the pedal board that's $8,750.00 cheaper than the other one!
I have a Donner power supply and was very impressed at the value for dollar.
Distinct Chris Buck vibes in today's playing. Sounds great.
Was about to comment the same thing lol
I was noticing he’s copped the pick tucking technique. No shame, not dissing. Just noting the influence Chris is already having on guitar. And it’s a good thing.
They're both great, but Chris has phenomenal feel and expression. He's truly something special. Imitation is the highest form of flattery. Yet Chris's videos only get 50-100K views?
Also, the quick half step slide after a bend, classic Chris Buck
Yeah, definately. He is one of the best original guitar players out there, everyone learning from him a bit, huge inspiration to us all :)
I like how he looks down and away from the camera when he says "I don't think either board comes out on top" LMAO. We know what he really thinks.
I have all the Donner ones and they're really good for the price
It's all about the quality of your audio recording interface, mics and/or cab sim.
Reviews aside, which I do enjoy you sir are one hell’uva guitar player! I don’t think people realize just how good you are!
Great vid regardless
All the best
👍✌😎
Thanks, thanks for making this video..was waiting for this for a long time
Not a guitar player, but I used to have a collection of pedals for cuz I could get them for next to nothing from pawn shops. And they were still useful when you plugged synths or tape loops or, you know, whatever into them. Now I have some DIY modular synth gear and a couple of those Donner pedals could be useful. Especially because I'm using 1/4" jacks on the modules.
Me with no money at all to afford either board whatsoever.....
Are you poor?
@@FlorianGuitar85 One might not be poor and not be able to afford either. It's a matter of priorities. Some people like to prioritize going on vacation every year, and other people prioritize fixing their house and getting idk a new washing machine. Either will say they can't afford the opposite (the vacation one will say they can't afford a new washing machine, and the washing machine guy will say he can't afford the vacations). It's all about priorities
The donners look like a great way to start putting a board together. Near enough seems great enough to start with 👍
If you were going for an ultimate pedal board, you need to swap out that NS2 for a Zuul! And expensive pedal that’s worth the extra! 👍🎸
I build $200 pedal board with Chinese mini pedals and scrap wood. It wasn't perfect but loved it for years.
To me the biggest difference are touch sensetivity and the communication with the knobs on your guitar...I might not sound, but feel different
Just to color the sound and boost alittle.
tbh the exive one dound better but doesn't mean you have to have it, buy watever you want, most of my pedals are eather used, cheap or midrange because thats the sound i like
Your videos are just perfect! Beginning solo and backing track amazing.
