- In this BMW E60 M5 video we take a look at replacing the two SMG gearbox relays as preventative maintenance.
Ignore the part number printed on the black relay in the video, I’d been supplied the wrong part number and had to change it out for the correct one
Part numbers
SMG Hydraulic Pump (Black) Relay- 61366901469
SMG Gear Oil Pump (Green) Relay- 61368373700

Thanks for watching!
Man this video was 3 years ago.
I’m having problems with SMG suddenly went neutral for no reason. Someone told replace the SMG pump and I’m glad I did not.
Thank you man, hopefully this issue will be solved after I buy the relay for the SMG pump.
Not many people think about relays and the importance of them. Once again you made a great video. Thanks again for sharing your passion!
Yes, often overlooked, but something that can easily leave you stranded with these cars. Thanks for watching
Bro!!! You saved my ass again . I don't know if you remember but I was the guy with transmission issues and I was heart broken when my car didn't start after fixing the clutch throwout bearing and slave cylinder after a nearly two months I fixed all of those and my car was fine until 2 weeks ago . I change the relays and my car was fixed again! I wish I could give you more then a like and sub .
Yes! I remember you telling me before about having to drop the gearbox twice!! 😩 That’s great to hear the relay video helped, good when it’s an easy fix. Cheers for the like & sub, thanks for watching Robbie, I appreciate it 👍
This is literally me right now changed my clutch and flywheel as well as throw out bearing and slave cylinder and accumulator car was fine for two weeks only difference I went to get an alignment and noticed hydraulic fluid dripping down from around the smg pump drove it home and it wouldn’t start when I open the door the pump doesn’t prime any input helps @MTechGuy
@6gawd186 hey shot in the dark but I would try to clear the code and remove the battery. Get the battery charged and then install it back see if the will fire up the SMG pump. Worked for me before. Worse case scenario it doesn't work.
Just did this a few days ago, thanks this video was really helpful. It's one of the items the mechanic forgot to do when we did the clutch/flywheel, etc.
Easy DIY often overlooked, and can cause many issues when they start to fail! Good job done to go with your reasonably new clutch & flywheel 👍
Another good video. 2 weeks ago I would have been in the camp that would say relays don’t wear out. I’d been chasing what I though was a temperature sensor issues to make the cooling fan run. I’d replace the sensor the fan would work. Then it wouldn’t. Replace sensor- fan worked for about a week. Turns out the fan relay in the trunk was starting to go bad. I support my bad coil theory because 4v was passing through the other side of the contractor. I bypassed the relay as a test and my car has never run better. I believe that small amount of voltage was throwing off the signal the engine management computer needed to run properly. Short story long, I just orders the two relays in you video and a fan relay. I want to keep the transmission running in top form. It’s such an amazing transmissions. Keep up the good work. Cheers from North Carolina, America
Thanks man, yes relays definitely do fail, usually by getting lazy over a long period of time, sounds like your fan issue ended up being a easy fix! I love the SMG, it’s worth looking after. Great to hear from an enthusiast from NC! 👍
I wanna thank you you saved me over 1k dollars bill maybe so here’s my story. My car came with very low battery and 5103-5203 later 4fa2 popped out I tried to recharge it but didn’t work then I put a new battery and registered it but I wasn’t able to delete faulty codes no matter how many times I tried . I followed your video and replaced those relay then boom yay all my faulty codes Gone even other codes . I drove around and check it again nothing came back for now . Thank you 🙏
That’s great to hear man, glad you found the video of value. Good on ya for getting it sorted 👍
@@MTechGuy 4fa2 code came back today and I get red transmission light but car drives for now . Is it possible to install clutch position sensor without dropping the transmission? Or that code means something else ? Thank u
@Giray Kharizzma Could be the PLCD? (clutch position sensor) Yes this can be replaced without dropping the gearbox (its mounted just above the pump) You may find you have to drop the tail of the gearbox for access. I would do some more investigation first though, start with the simple stuff- make sure the fluid is at the correct level, wiring harnesses are in good shape etc.
@@MTechGuy thanks for reply also can you check smg fuild level without dropping the transmission and top it off ? The faulty code is 4fa0 that’s the only code I have
Yes can be topped up in position, make sure the car is level
Finally someone showing everything step by step . Have a 🍪 👍
Nice one mate! Another great idea for preventative maintenance I'm ordering a couple of them ASAP. Love your work and thanks very much.
Thank man. Yes it’s a good easy cheap preventative job 👍
Literally just did mine 4 days ago after reading the SMG priming relay can leave you stranded. Great vid 👍
Nice one, good job to get done to avoid any trouble further down the road. Thanks for watching!
What valuable information you have, and what a wonderful job you done,
I did not know about these points, and i missed it
Thank you so much these information.
Brother keep it up 👍🏻 , and keep searching ,good luck,
Thanks 😊
Glad it was helpful! Thanks man, I appreciate it
Great video. However I’m wondering, where is the SMG relay on an 07 E60 550? I have looked under the cabin filter on the passenger's side like in the video and there are only 2 relays there - the ABS and Windshield Wiper relays.
My friend, does he have anything to do with running the car? I have a problem.
Would this be the same process for bmw e60 523i
Are you still in nz . Great to hear that you were. I'm just starting to have shifting issues , but I have a ZF trans . Was wondering about relays . Factory reset lasting a week . I'll see if relays are the same ,or if I even have any cheers .
O8 ,e60 525i msport . 5series.
Yeah based in NZ. ZF trans completely different to an SMG. Try giving it a fluid & filter change first to see if it improves it, if not it may have internal faults
Is there a resource about accessing the brake vacuum pump relay on e60 m5?
If I remember right the relay is position up under the dash on the passenger side, it’s a pale green colour
Hey man i was wondering if you knew where the fuel pump relay is because i cant find it at all?
Fuse box at back of glove box, pale green relay top left
@ thank you
Hi M tech guy my smg has stopped priming. I've ordered the new relay but is there anyway to test the old one until it arrives. The pump motor was replaced 2 years ago and this happened the next morning after driving on a very hot day (39 degrees)
Start by checking the fluid level and try the new relay. It could be a sign the hydraulic pump is failing, or pressure is bleeding away somewhere in the system (failing O-ring or accumulator)
Hello. Fernando from Portugal. I have benn left on foot for the second time by my m5 v10 because the gear box entered in safe mode and did not allowed me to start the car up. The first time was due to the alternator that didn’t charge the battery well and the gear box failed because of the lack of energy. That’s what I was told. The alternator was replaced. Last Saturday the appened again. Safe mode and the gear because was stuck and didn’t allow the car to start. The error on the machine was related to the hydraulic pressure on the gear box. Question: could it be the relays or is the gear motor begin to failed. What is you sugestion? I have a new acumulator also. Thank you.
Hi Fernando, that’s no good being left to walk! Can you hear the SMG pump run when you unlock the car? I would start with the relays, then check fluid level and the motor
@@MTechGuy thank you for your answer. That’s what I will do. I hear the pump working when I unlock the car. But in the office shop that did not happen when the car was “stuck”. The gear was realeased using the diagnostic machine through a specific order by that computer and then the gear stick was able to function after the pump begun to start.
My E60 M5 is stuck in neutral with no lights on the gearstick and it doesnt recognize that I'm in neutral. Do you know what this might be? It wont start as it says car needs to be in neutral but it already is.
Pull your codes.
Maybe clutch sensor
Could be any number of factors causing it, start off by checking the basic stuff first- battery, relay, bonnet switch etc. Could be bad pump motor. As has been mentioned- read the codes, that should point you in the right direction. Good luck!
Same thing happened to me pump won’t turn on when i open the door or open the car with the key hopefully is the relay
When you change a relay do you have to disconnect the battery?
Not really
@@MTechGuy Great and thanks for letting me know.
Hi, thanks for the great info videos. I have a problem with the e64 V10 SMG.
When driving in M mode you sometimes get a transmission error. Diagnostics shows codes: 4F40 and 4F43
Maybe you had a similar problem or you know where to look for a failure?
Thank you for your answer.
It could be any number of issue causing them codes. Is the pump motor in good shape? possibly a leak issue, either the lower pump seals, or the actuator block at the top. First make sure the fluid level is correct and the relays are good. Make sure the pump motor is operating properly- then perform an accumulator pressure test and go from there
@@MTechGuy thx
Hi Mate ,
I have changed the relay and the smg pump motor , issue is i didnt depressurised the hydraulic system before and the car wont start now ,any advice ?it doesnt even crank and smg pump makes a squirly noise and get very hot when engaging it from the computer
You need to bleed the pump, to do so requires software or a scan too that is capable of carrying out the bleed procedure
@@MTechGuy i know but it doesn’t allow me , in the hydraulics sistem do i need to add normal gearbox oil or chf power steering ?i have added geabox oil and i think it doesnt make pressure
Needs to be hydraulic oil, drain what you have put in there and use CHF 11S
Off question mines a e60 530d 2004 does this has a relay for the horn? If you know thanks
No, it doesn’t
I just watched your video SMG transmission relays I have a 2006 530I with the SMG transmission... My car will start.. the indicators says it's in neutral and I can't seem to select any gears reverse or drive... Sometimes as I'm parked in my parking lot ... The Revs will drop... And reverse will engage on its own without touching my stick shift but it all still indicate on the dash that I am in neutral.... Do you have any ideas as to what is going on and what could be causing the problem..?...(I did put in a new battery , 6 months ago and did not know that I had to register it and has given me many problems over the last 6 months.... I strongly suspect that this might be the initial cause of all my problems...)...can you help... Thanking you in advance
Start off with a good battery, and check the fluid level. Scan for any SMG codes and go from there. Could be any number of issues, possibly low hydraulic pressure, or a bad harness?
My e60 m5 transmission came on saying clutch adaptation active and transmission malfunction I scan the car and I got this code 4f67 the car drives fine I don't know what to do
That code normally means the SMG adaptions (calibrations) can’t be completed. This can be caused by a failing clutch slave cylinder sometimes
Do you need to unhook the battery first?
No, so long as the ignition is off and the pump isn’t trying to run
@@MTechGuy thank you!
Are there any signs that could show that either of the relays are failing?
Hydraulic pressure issues, and ultimately the car not starting
@@MTechGuy Thanks, I might change mine then, given that the parts aren't expensive!
Question the orange 40amp fuse next to the Hydraulic pump relay keeps blowing on me. Does that have anything to do with the relay?
Sounds like the SMG pump motor is shorting out, but I would start with the relays if they haven’t already been done
Hello, im about to upload a video. I have a 550i with I believe smg2 trans and throwing a code of 4ef5 and a few more codes but this one really getting my attention. No crank, no start. Engine malfunction and goes to reverse suddenly after a while of moving it up to N with ista…could it be a relay? All fuses are good. I should have a video up by the time u get to this comment
Hey man, I would start by reading the codes, check the SMG fluid level, and SMG relays
@@MTechGuy sorry i meant transmission malfunction…if u could plz go look at my last upload
@@MTechGuy 4ef5 was the code
My m5 started getting a engine malfunction reduced power. the codes are a 4F40 code and a 4FA0 I have mo issues with switching gears it shifts fine. Could this be cause of the relay switchs the car has 170k miles and it thr transmission was rebuilt by bmw dealer 3 years ago
Possibly the PLCD failing
@@MTechGuy do you recommended changing relays and plcd. I don't get no red or yellow cog sign and it'd been 2 days since it started and It goes away when the car is shut off for 5 minutes and it drives fine. I noticed it only happens when my gas light comes on
@@AkeemVicente Before getting too deep into the SMG diagnosis, start with making sure the relays are good and the hydraulic fluid level is good, and go from there
Do I need to disconnect the battery first?
Not really
@@MTechGuyhey brother any way I can get in contact with you i have a few questions
Do you have an idea where fuel pump relay is ? Thx
This video should give you an idea of the location of the fuel pump fuses & relays-

@@MTechGuy perfect thank you ..yep 72, 30 just found out in my trunk ..so I'm looking to do a compression test on all 10cyl just pulling 30 &72 will disable fuel system completely? Or relay needs pulling too? Thnx mate
@@jayd1008 Just the relay should do, but I’d pull the whole lot just to be sure. For each cylinder test crank it for 8 seconds
@@MTechGuy 👍
@@MTechGuy just finished the job , all cyl came in around 125psi ..well within spec at 62k mi .. also got chance to boroscooe around in there pistons tops are Lil black as this car runs rich and hot .. you should give it a go and make a video 👍..go for it # save the v10s
Another great video
Cheers Stuart, thanks for watching
Can you give us the part numbers for the relay
Both in the video description 👍
Hi it’s it for the m5 & m6 the same Position for the relay I own both m6&m5 my m6 it’s stuck in
Gear he don’t want to start the car didn’t have any problems it’s just cam up when I was driving (transmission) light I turned it of and the car didn’t more want to start I think it’s a bed relay
Yes same position. Avoid towing the car if it’s stuck in gear, as this can damage the vanos pump
@@MTechGuy ok how can I fix it
Nice videos, where are you based in NZ?
Thanks man. Based in Christchurch, South Island
There is one other relay with this part #61366901469, the other one is in the fuse box in the trunk, might as well replace that one.
Bro my 2006 m5 loss power sometimes and no codes
I would start with scanning the car with a BMW specific scan tool, there may be shadow codes relating to the power loss. Also monitoring the running values with a scan tool should give you some indication if something’s not 100%
I'm going to replace the oxygen sensors all 4 because I never replace it I have 114xxx miles on it
@@MTechGuy some times when I get gas full something going wrong with the idle
I’ve seen that happen when non premium fuel is used, these cars are super fussy with that. Otherwise if it only happens with refuelling, sounds like could possibly be an evap issue
I'm from New York here 93 octane only
Bro..your vanos gears are very loud..yiu should get post 2007 exhaust gear
Yes the right hand side is super noisy! It’s all good though. I have been keeping an eye out for a good used post ‘07 gear but so far been unsuccessful finding one
@@MTechGuy where are you based?
Thanks
South Island, New Zealand
@@MTechGuy i got a gear from an 08 i can send you for free but due to covid i cannot go to the garage in another 3 weeks i believe
Thanks man, that’s very generous. I need to get a P/O Box sorted!
👍
