The first movie has a lot of heart and sincerity. I saw Beastmaster 2, and while Marc Singer once again delivers the character of Dar with great conviction, the fish out of water story of Dar being transported to modern times was goofy, silly, off-putting. I didn't see 3 or the TV series.
I grew up watching the Beastmaster on HBO and later TBS as a kid and it has stuck with me all of these years. It is highly entertaining and epic despite having some corny and laughable moments. The cinematography and set pieces are amazing as is the music. It truly creates a memorable and terrifying ancient/alternate universe but one that also has adventure right around the corner. It's too bad Beastmaster never got a real proper sequel made with the same love Don Coscarelli put into it. They waited too long for the sequels and the follow up story was just a bad idea. It would have been cool to have a real sequel in the mid to late 80s when the movie was hot and was one of the most requested films on cable tv. I own it and just watched it recently on Prime and it holds up. There are several long form recent interviews with Marc Singer on RUclips talking about the film and his career in Hollywood he is a really nice and down to earth guy which makes me like the film even more.
I don't know about 200 times, but I know I've watched it 3 or 4 times in the last year alone, and dozens of times in my life. I too have watched the sequels once each. Maybe less, not sure if I managed to finish them at all. I prefer to think of them not existing. The musical score is one of the best ever, IMO.
They waited too long for the sequels and made a big mistake with moving the action to modern day USA in part 2. The whole premise was just stupid and the sequels were cheaply made to cash in on the Beastmaster name years later. They should have made a sequel with more thought and some returning cast members and Don Coscarelli directing if possible in the mid to late 80s when the Beastmaster was being played perpetually on HBO and TBS. They needed to keep it in that same scary, primitive world though with Dar going on an adventure or mission of some kind IMO.
One of my favorite barbarian movies. Seen it many many times on HBO and rented it a lot as a kid. I admit Tanya was a big reason lol. But I loved the characters the story and the actors and animals. I knew Amos from Good Times and then saw Marc in V. I still want a pair of ferrets to this day lol. And the bat guys with the wings that melted you into food was frickin cool. And of course the elk horn helmets bad guys.
Wouldn't it have made more sense if the Beastmaster had a special connection only with cows rather than all animals? Instead of a hawk, panther, and ferrets, Dar would travel with a small herd of cows.
As a child I watched this movie on VHS so many times that I physically wore the tape out and it broke while playing it. To this day I recently discovered after not having watched it in 10 years that I can still basically recite each line of dialog word for word. One of my regrets now is that I did not take advantage a few years ago when they produced a line of replica swords/scabbards from the movie. At the time they were around $800 U.S. now I can't find one for under $2500.
I love 1980s Sword & Sorcery films, and this one ranks very high on my list. It is pretty much only beat out by what I consider to be The Gold Standard of all Sword & Sorcery films of that era, Conan The Barbarian. In fact, if I were to rank them from best to worst I would say it would be: #1: Conan The Barbarian #2: Beastmaster #3: Conan The Destroyer #4: Willow #5: Deathstalker #6: (More of a Guilty Pleasure really) Red Sonja To be honest, I am a little torn as to whether Conan The Destroyer or Willow should be in the #3 spot. In many ways, I would say that they are tied. But I think that the tie breaker would have to be the sheer awesomeness that is Arnold Schwarzenegger. BTW, I HAVE seen both Beastmaster sequels as well as several episodes of the TV series. They all have their good points, but for the most part I say skip them. The bad most definitely outweighs the good in those.
Many thanks so please you enjoyed it! My channel has started to build views so I'm confident there will more to come. Thanks for watching and the comment!

Watched on TV in '90s multiple times, both this one and first sequal. Loved them both equally. This one was more scary, sequal was lighter in tone. Kinda like the Terminator and it's sequal.
Awesome review. I adore this movie too - loved it from when I first saw it way back in the day (when I was likely too young to be seeing it) and still love it to this day. I haven't seen the sequels yet either, but I still rewatch the original at least once a year. I'm really loving your channel, newly subscribed. :)
Nicole Lovecraft that’s great to. Hear ! So glad you enjoyed the review and always great and heart warming to connect with a fan of this movie 👍 thanks for watching and your kind comments and support for my channel 😎
I’ve seen the first movie and, although that was a long time ago,I remember it being okay, nothing more.I remember being in a video store and considering renting Beastmaster 2.As I was looking at the box,I suddenly heard the voice of the guy behind the counter,a very nice guy who I consider a friend, call me.I looked at him,he shook his head,so as it turns out I did not rent that or see it,nor have I ever seen any other Beastmaster related material.Maybe one day I’ll read the book, since the idea of putting Beastmaster in the future sounds interesting to me and I remember enjoying another, unrelated book by Andre Norton called Sargasso of Space. That one’s lots of fun and could potentially make for a very entertaining space intrigue film(yeah,I just made up a new name for that genre!)
great review and another film I need to see. I really think your next review should be something from the 1930s or 40s. Keep the viewers guessing-don't get stuck in the 1980s films. Duncan Casey, Oliver Harper, etc only talk about these films of the 80s and it makes you wonder if they have ever seen a classic Universal horror or a 1930s screwball comedy. These films (and many more) deserve a retrospective. I know you are the man to do it! Keep up the good work.
Hey thank you for your great feedback 👍 don’t worry my time circuits on my reviews are definitely not stuck in the 80s 😉 I’m just doing a small series of movies from my childhood that definitely get overlooked by my peers!! Great recommendations 🙏😎 Best Mat

Another solid review my good sir. Question: How do you decide what movie to spotlight as your next video? I've sadly never seen Beastmaster, but now must admit I'm rather curious.
Hi Brandon! Thank you for your comments 😎 I’m glad it’s inspired a view ! My decisions are based on a few factors. One lately is looking at movies that were prominent in my own childhood that didn’t necessarily do that well or don’t get enough attention by the bigger reviewers. I love The Beastmaster. It was one of my top 3 favorite movies as a child along with The Monster Squad And Commando . Yes, I watched Commando as a child, my parents let me watch just about anything LOL. While the Beastmaster is a better kids movie then Conan. I have watched both of them recently and I do not think Beastmaster is even close to as good of a movie as Conan . Again, That is coming from someone who watched The Beastmaster probably close to 100 times as a child.

Nice , keep it up. I think "The Sword and the Sorcerer was a better movie and even that one did not reach its full potential. Again another story for them to repeat and murder, not carry it to its full potential. Beastmaster was just too corny as I recall watching it when it came out and once a few years later . I can understand Andre Norton not liking it compared to his story . But alas "B-Movie" blues
Malcolm Elliott I’m only glad I still haven’t managed to watch the sequels and ruin my childhood memories of the classic original 👍 thanks for commenting and for watching 🙏
I wish we can make some simple movies again. Simple story arc, one-sided bad guy, sexy half naked women, buffed up half naked hero dude (no homo). Just a simple movie.
