Gilbert Chadwick Snr.. Sounds like a bloke I'd love to meet! Class fella in my immediate opinion.. I love the Hoppings, Best memory was when they were setting up when i was a bairn and was at a coin shoving machine in a small arcade. A guy working on one side of the machine knocked the bit he was working on and about 6 quid fell out on my side and i just looked at him.. He said 'Just take it..' ( paraphrasing ) My eyes nearly burst out me heed! 🤣😅😂 It all went back in but it was fantastic.. I hate missing the Hopping's when i do, every bloody year that i do.. Great video Eddie

That was an absolutely fantastic video! I’m 60 now, living in Spain and haven’t been to the Hoppings for some years now! First one I remember going to when I was maybe 6 Yrs old …. Someone bumped into me & my candy floss on a stick stuck in my hair and I FM dropped the goldfish that I had won. That fish got scooped up and lived for many years as I recall. Favourite ride: the dodgems. Favourite stall: Hook the Duck. A Gypsy told me, when I was 24 “there’s a long knife & it won’t last” … I married a year later, we cut the cake with a sword & the marriage didn’t last!
@@TynesideLife gonna watch this video again. Reminds me of home and I loved the long interview with the elder of the pack! Wonderful man. Full of interesting memories
That was absolutely fascinating mate, made me feel quite emotional, the Hoppings has always had a deep place in my heart and learning about the people who run it was really interesting, if you could wrangle an extended interview with Gilbert about the fair and the life of a showman I’d love to see it, great video :D
Love the Hoppings, used to go every year with my Dad and come back with a goldfish in a plastic bag. Those were the days ! Just love the smell and the drone of the machinery

I remember Gilbert pulling on to the Hartlepool headland fair since I was a boy I’m now 58, lovely to see him still fit and well, he was always a lovely man and would always have time for us kids
Cheers Eddie, great Vid again. Like most people on Tyneside, the Hopping’s is part of my childhood. I loved going there with my late Dad and my Mother when I was a kid. Brings back great Memories.👍

Fascinating...is it the end? Gilbert, " it'll go on forever!" Q + answer😂me Mam would take me doon the Hoppings as a bairn, it was without doubt my favourite week of the year, back in the 80's the boxing and circus was mindblowing/hilarious and Gilbert was right, didn't have to spend much as it was an extraordinary extravaganza to watch! You forgot to say why it's called the Hoppings...my understanding from my Showmans Guild pals is when it's clarty/muddy, you literally gave to hop across the moor🤩😎
