WE|Sail Explores the Big Island, Hawaii | Episode 118

- After a couple days of cleaning, fixing the boat and fueling up we get the boat all to ourselves and then set off to explore the Big Island of Hawaii.
WE find some tasks are easier than others when living on a boat, but lately after COVID, some things can be a bit more challenging. WE were able to fuel up the Wolfhound after our 3 week long passage across the Pacific on the commercial docks in Hilo.
WE send Steven and Lou on their way to spend a few days on shore and we watch after the Wolfhound while they are gone. Then we trade off and go explore the Big Island on our own with a sweet ride!

Always rent a Jeep Wrangler when visiting Hawaii. Top comes off and you can get to a lot of places that are off the beaten path. Some really beautiful beaches are not accessible by car. Have to have 4x4

I have done the passage from Newport Beach to Oahu on a Columbia 52 in 15 days three days with no wind. We had some 240 mile days. We had no weather downloads one of the first GPS's. The only weather reports we got were from the Coast Gaurd on the SSB radio and those reports were never right. We contacted them at one point to let them know their reports were way off. We had a report 10 r0 15 knots of wind and 5 to 10 ft swells NOT. It was blowing 25 gust in the 30's the swells were 15 to 20 feet. Plus we were in a following seas. We went th rough the MOLIKIA channel at night with a reef in the main and a 100% Jib pegging the knot meter at 19 knots. Most fun ever .Great video thanks for bring back great memories.

It’s a custom built “one off” schooner built by a small ship builder out of the UK

Laughing ... well there certainly were all sorts of shenanigans going in this episode ... what fun .... liked the drone shot of the mustang commercial as well as all the rest, gives one such a different perspective .... so was the black sand beach warm, hot that the turtles congregated there ,,,, in your last video you mentioned April, does that put you heading east again, you must be at about the 5 month mark am guessing ... quite the deal to get diesel, but a lot easier than dinghying jerry cans .. tanker guy must do this quite a lot so has a good selection of hose adapters or was it fluke that they matched ..... thx for the peek into your adventures Warren & Erica .. as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ..
