Pats defense would never be the same after this game and the knee injury sustained during it to rodney harrison...before that injury he was the best SS ive ever seen

You haven't seen much outside of Patriots games; if he's the best Strong Side safety you ever saw. Rodney Harrison is great; but Troy Polamalu is in this game; whose athletic ability and instincts are hall of fame worthy. Athletic alone he was just; as big as a LB and fast as a decent corner, just, humans aren't built like that. There were lots of great hitters in the 90's too at SS, Steve Atwater. Dude squared up and solo tackled Christian Okoye; what a fucking collision. Plus the 1997 Superbowl triple knockout in the final minute? ruclips.net/video/XYXc9cwg_po/видео.html

Ed Reed was a better overall safety then Polamalu; but isn't a SS, hes a FS, and as such, he shut down more of the field. Reed more speed, hand ability, arrived at the ball faster. Passing is the main threat, but Troy in the Box just crushed the run, was a better blitzer. Also, Troy guessed wrong a lot more often then Reed did. It depends on the opponent, a team that depends on run and play action is, not going to be able to do that with Troy. A team that's drop back is going to have a harder time facing Reed. Brady, hated playing Reed more then the Steelers; especially when Patriots became more of a passing team in 06-07 that passed to set up the run.
I mean; the Patriots did beat the hell out of the 2004 15-1 Steelers. THEYLL NEVA EVA EVA EVA GET ON OUR LEVEL - "Joey Porter"

@@WalterWhiteFootballSharing ive studied both strong safeties extensively...Harrison and Polamalu-watched Polamalus entire career more or less-he wasnt as good as R.Harrison...Troy was great, and I have no real issue with him going into the HOF...However, Harrison was better...Bear in mind I refer to Harrison before he tore up his knee in this game...He was never the same player after this injury, not even close...
Harrison was a better tackler, a better hitter, and he was a better performer in playoff games...He didnt gamble as much...He was also much better at taking on blockers and getting past them in a variety of different ways(esp exploding into and thru them), and as far as blitzing and pass coverage is concerned hes the only player in history with 30 or more sacks and 30 or more ints other than Ray Lewis...Yes, I recall Atwater knocking himself, his opponent, and a teammate out in SBXXXII...The link isnt needed...I also recall Jerry Rice taking an Atwater hit in SBXXIV bouncing a 180 spin off of it and walking into the endzone...
Polamalu was more popular than Harrison, and given Dawkins recent entry into the HOF, Troy will be a surefire HOFer, but he was not more productive or effective in any way than Rodney Harrison, & HOF worthy at Safety is a "funny" term...Perhaps Troy was faster, more athletic, but he wasnt so decisively faster/more athletic than Harrison that it made up Rodneys cognitive advantages, discipline, or willingness to do things no one else would.
Until Dawkins got in due to his urban popularity there were only 8 safeties in the HOF in total and several of em including arguably the best of them played cb at probowl if not an allpro level b4 switching to safety(RLott). Harrison probably should have been a 1st ballot HOFer given the impact he had, but he has more than a few haters in high places. Did Dawkins or Polamalu ever create 8 turnovers in 6consecutive playoff games? No in fact Dawkins created fewer TOs in 18 career playoff games combined than Rodney did in his 1st 6 with the Pats- and Rodney didnt make those TOs against journeymen...He made those plays against R.Wayne M.Harrison D.McNabb Big Ben and league MVPs Steve McNair & P.Manning.
Based on the numbers as well as the impact he had in big games-games Dawkins played against the top QBs, top teams in the NFL, and in playoff games, Dawkins had absolutely no business ever being inducted into the NFL HOF whatsoever...In 18 total career playoff games he created fewer TOs than Harrison created during that 6 consecutive game bak2back SB run.
Harrison is 3rd alltime in career playoff ints. He alone stands alongside Ray Lewis as the other member of the 30+sac&30+int club, has as many rings as Lewis, and he has twice as many SB appearances as Lewis...Furthermore, Belichick used to use film of Rodney as a Charger yrs before Rodney even joined the Pats to show struggling Patriots DBs an example of a DB who consistently did things the right way between the whistles to model their game after. The fact is the Pats defense was terrible in 2002 before they brought him in for the 2003 season. While Harrison was healthy and starting all 16 games each yr, NEs def was one of the best defenses in the NFL for the following 2 seasons during which they won back2back SBs-something no 1 has done since-and thru the 1st few weeks of that 3rd season even with Bruschi(sudden retirement due to a stroke) Law(left via free agency) and Ted Johnson(retired citing headaches, possible brain damage) all absent Harrison was still holding that defense together...The week after this Pats/Steelers game they were utterly annihilated...Eugene Wilson had performed admirably for 2 seasons as a complimentary puzzle piece at FS in tandem with Rodney...Wilson was only in his 3rd season, yet he went from performing like a competent if not fairly good young DB with Rodney on the field to a totally incompetent liability who consistently struggled to retain his starting role after Rodney was lost to the knee injury during this game. The Pats 2ndary didnt become truly good again for about a decade and gave up 2 GW SB drives after Harrison tore up his knee.
